Gary Numan Digest Sun, 5 Jan 97 Volume 1 : Issue 294 Today's Topics: "I'm stealing new words" Gary Numan MPEG found Metal Beat new address Prat ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: 02 Jan 97 05:52:34 EST From: Brian Moloney <100572.31@CompuServe.COM> Subject: "I'm stealing new words" To: "INTERNET:numan@cs.uwp.edu" I've just watched 'Willy Wonkas Chocolate Fac tory' (with the children - honest) and about an hour into the film Willy (Gene Wilder) says; "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams" I expected to hear the rest of the intro to 'Machine & Soul'! I've placed most of the sound bytes Gary has used from films such as; Aliens Bladerunner Predator The Blues Brothers Roger Ramjet (cartoon) Terminator The Unborn ; -) But does anyone know where the clip from Outlands 'Interval' comes from, and what is the missing word? "My people have many needs, one is ???????? the other, entertainment. Without me, you don't even exist" Regards, and best wishes for 1997 Brian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Jan 1997 07:59:50 -0800 (PST) From: atomic@netcom.com (Mike Metlay ++ Atomic City) Subject: Gary Numan MPEG found To: numan@cs.uwp.edu numan@cs.uwp.edu writes-- >From: Ron Cadieux >Subject: Gary Numan MPEG found >To: Numan Digest > >------------373A6499270D0 >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > > Hello, > > >To anyone who may be interested I have found on the internet a location >where a Gary Numan MPEG sound file can be downloaded. It is in the mp3 >format which makes it CD quality 44.1 stereo sound!!! The strangest >aspect of this whole surprise is the song itself. At first I though it >was a joke but it turned out to be real. The song is Metal Beat (which >is not on any album from what I understand) > >You need a layer 3 audio player to hear this song. Once you have that >go and check it out at >ftp://ftp.cs.nyu.edu/pub/local/perlin/incoming/_%5BUploads%5D/ I'll need to listen to it (assuming I can get an MPEG reader to handle it), but my bet is that you've been hoodwinked. "Metal Beat" isn't by Gary at all; it's from _Metamatic_, the first solo album by John Foxx, the lead singer for Ultravox's original lineup. The comparison to Numan is frequently made where that record is concerned; it's similar in compositional style and lyrical content to early Numan. Happy new year to everyone on the list. My personal wish to you all for 1997 is that you make this list a more pleasant piece of email to read in the future. Gary Numan is an ordinary human being, who enjoys making music, flying planes, riding motorbikes, and Gemma. He produces some phenomenally good music and some really crummy music, and he's not immune to making mistakes. He's not a demigod, and I won't be struck by lightning or afflicted with boils for saying so, no matter how much some folks wish I might be. Relax and trade data, not bile. I leave the table saying I am real, mike -- "I'm going through a phase where I'm learning how much I don't know, and I don't want to say anything unless it A. is correct and B. contributes.... Geez, all the lists would dry up if everyone was in the same phase." (cikira) =========================================================================== Mike Metlay - ATOMIC CITY - P. O. I really love this lost now found treasure. I wonder how the inspiration came to Gary to compose this. I would not mind at all if he made another song along these lines. His voice sounds so good. Then again it always does.
