Gary Numan Digest Thu, 6 Feb 97 Volume 1 : Issue 303 Today's Topics: Illustrated Man Loose ends Random and Republica Republica/Numan collaboration ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Feb 1997 23:23:15 -0500 (EST) From: JasonR1459@aol.com Subject: Illustrated Man To: numan@cs.uwp.edu To complete my collection of Numan-related releases, I recently found a copy of the album by Illustrated Man (Capitol, 1984), which features Numan sideman Roger Mason. Though it also features members of Gang of Four and Japan, it's dreadful, really. And I'm most often biased in favor of anything Numan-related. I'm not sure which is worse, vocalist Phillip Foxman or the overall badness of the band's overproduced, plodding electro-funk. Avoid at all costs. But then again, I'm not a huge Dramatis fan, either. Give me Gardiner's "Stormtroopers in Drag" any day. I joined the list mainly because I know someone from one of the bands - I've never followed InSoc closely. I'm not sure exactly who it is that did the "AFE" cover. Whilst only a small reference, it did mention that Pet Shop Boys, The Orb, Blur, Nine Inch Nails, Beck, and Dubstar would be contributing, with a release date of late April. Pet Shop Boys?????!!!!!!! Blimin 'eck! I think this is the first time that the Pet Shop Boys have been mentioned as being involved. Whilst I personally can't stand PSBs, their ability to pull in the punters is undeniable. Also, I had assumed that Beck and NINs were no longer involved since they had not been mentioned recently. It really looks like Random is back on form. I checked on the Beggars Banquet homepage. Whilst no new listings are given, they do say that it is due to be all finalised by the end of January. We avidly await news! I hope the Numan camp are going to capitalise on all this. This has got to be the biggest thing ever that could dispell the "Numan is Crap" theory that is widespread (throughout the UK at least). They MUST look at this as being their best ever, and maybe last, chance. Also the Republica single "Ready to Go" is out soon in the UK. Apparently its been out sometime in the States. Anyway, its BRILLIANT! Very very cool band. In the video, Saffron even does a few Numan movements! Their version of AFE should be unbelievable. 97 is starting to look good Digesters! Lets just hope it doesn't all fizzle out like Premier did last year. I had queried them in regards to a radio appearance they had made here in Richmond, VA. They had mentioned working with Gary, and I had asked them for details... > Subject: Republica / Numan > Date: Tue, 04 Feb 1997 02:24:09 -0800 > From: Tim Dorney > To: damrat@earthlink.net > Yes it's sort of true we are in the middle of a project with Gary Numan. > Unfortunately we don't know if we'll ever finish it in time!
