I can see why people with real jobs don't have time for email or the net - it is a huge time drain and not conducive to productivity. Gary has just emailed me back his January answers. I'll try and get them in this Digest but they may not appear till Sunday's. Little news of late. We can expect the new live album in March but Gary is waiting for a deal for "Exile". That's it. I am a graduate student at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. Every Tuesday I do a synthpop radio show on my university radio station, KSLU. I would like to play some music from Gary Numan. Would it be possible I could get some of his latest CD's for my show? What US record label is he with? My address is the following: Yusuf Ata Mohyuddin ATTN: KSLU Music Dept. 12727 Hezel Lane Saint Louis, Missouri 63141 USA Thanx, and please keep synthpop alive! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Feb 1997 02:28:41 -0500 From: Sean Caszatt Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #304 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Just thought I'd post a little Numan-related note. Someone at work recommended I see a movie called BLOOD & DONUTS. I'd never heard of it, but he had it on video and lent it to me. The movie was pretty cool, but the initially cool thing was that Nash the Slash did the soundtrack. It was a Canadian movie that came out in 1995. Filmed in Toronto. David Cronenberg was in it, as a crime boss, but did not direct or produce it. I haven't seen it listed in any of those VideoHound Movie Directory things, but it does have an entry on the Internet Movie Database. (Although, the soundtrack is not credited on the IMDB.) The soundtrack was pretty cool. It was the first time I'd heard anything he'd done since his association with Gary. The show was at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, not hollywood. Also, the newspapers advertised it as Illustrated Man featuring Gary Numan. And it was an okay show, nothing to write mother about. I was able to go back stage and talk with Roger, Rob and the gang. They had nothing but good things to say aboout Gary. However the entire time we were chatting I kept getting the impression that they were not in it for the music, more as businessmen. Quite sad and if you think about it ,maybe that's why they didn't last?. While leaving I asked Rob if he had heard Gary's NU stuff and wanted his impression. He said "it's a bit different then he has done before, and I'm not sure how the media will greet it?". Well that comment didn't go "Head over heels" and I said "when Gary starts to write for the medias approval, then it will be the end". Anyway, Illustrated Man's appearence in the "Tissue" pop age was more like you r shirt sleeve. I think I still have that 12" single somewhere??????? Any of us yanks want to plan a trip to the U.K. to see Gary?.... It's a plan of mine to see him again this year. Let me know?... I believe Republica's version of AFE is NOT going to be included on the upcoming "Random" release by Beggars. Mozoko is already doing a cover version of AFE the last I saw. Pop Will Eat Itself doing a cover of "Friends" and not AFE now makes sense as well as I can't see Beggars allowing one track being done by more than one band on the same tribute album. Perhaps Republica's version of AFE (with Gary doing the speaking bits) will come out as a single of their own as in the case with Information Society doing a cover of AFE. Don't any of these bands know anything more than "Cars", DITP, or AFE? I'd enjoy hearing a cover of Bombers or just about anything else as well! The track "She Cries" is a b-side from the Berserker (1984) era even though it appears on Images 5. Gary did not hold to period music on the Images series in all cases. Most of the time he did, but not all the time. I really like the 7up adverts on that Images 5 as well! Too bad the radio adverts were never used in America as they were intended :-( "Questions always question, I'll just speak in slow motion..." Cheers! If you are in the Inland Empire, or anyuwhere in Southern California, it would really help things if we could show them how loyal and interested Gary's fans are. Please send me an email at madhouse@themall.net if you would consider patronizing The Mad Platter if they carried a good selection of Numan CDs and other stuff. The Mad Platter is a great store, with VERY reasonable prices on hard to find artists.
