Aside from the more obvious "references" to the likes of Devo and Kraftwerk, his body language and facial expressions are obvious nods and hello's to Gary Numan. There is even a direct "reference" to the "I Die: You Die" video driving sequence. Are young hipster Beck fans getting (tangentially) a glimmer of what is great about Numan? Or is this kind of observation one that carries as little validity as saying that Gary got a lot from Bowie, T-Rex and Kraftwerk? I can't help but wonder what Gary and Beck talked about backstage. It's not too hard to figure out that Numan is an influence on many. Or is it just that Numan (as a part of a broader late '90s interest in the '80s) is being used as yet another fashion accessory for young whipper-snappers, like bell bottom pants are here in Los Angeles? Hey Phil, that's a NORTH American tour, not just American. :-) On Gary's list of possible tour pitstops, there's two Canadian cities listed - Vancouver and Toronto. Toronto's a tad far away (about 5000 km) but Vancouver's relatively close (1000 km - hey, I said relatively!), with Seattle (another gig site) being a couple hour's drive from there... so hopefully I can catch two shows on this tour, if it happens. Anyways, my tongue was planted FIRMLY in my cheek when I gave you shit in the above paragraph. :-) The reason I'm writing is to THANK YOU for expressing that sentiment publicly. I've been seeing something ugly lately, in my email and in other places, and that is both apathy and, in some cases, derision coming from UK fans towards the possibility of a CanAm tour. And that really, really sucks, and I find myself extremely pissed off about this attitude, possibly more so than I should be really. UK fans have had it far easier than we have, by comparison. In Britain, it is quite possible to be a "casual" Numan fan, catching the occasional show and buying the occasional album. Here, you are either a committed fan or you aren't a fan. And the committed fans put up with a lot.... I can't tell you how many times I've mentioned Gary Numan to somebody, only to get a blank look and a "Gary WHO?!?" in response. Having to import just about everything (and pay through the nose!) in order to keep up to date is another barrier to casual fans, who simply won't buy it if it isn't on the record store shelf. It's been tough, but we've KEPT THE FAITH for seventeen years and we DESERVE to finally, at long long last, get a tour... even a small one. UK fans get a tour every year or so. This is Gary's first tour of North America in 15 years, and his first visit to Canada in 17. For us, the ONLY option is to do what I did last year: save up a WHOLE TON of money, hop on a plane, and make your "pilgrimage to Mecca". For me, because I'm single and have the ability to earn decent money with NO dependents and low expenses, this dream became a reality. For the vast majority of fans here, it simply is NOT an option and likely never will be (barring a sudden lottery win). THIS MAY BE THE ONLY CHANCE MANY FANS WILL EVER HAVE TO SEE GARY. EVER. And for (a minority of) Brit fans to sneer and not take any of this seriously makes me want to rip somebody's head off and use it as a chamberpot. :-) Sure, the tour's only a "maybe" at this point... and to be honest with you, I'll believe it ONLY when I see it confirmed and the phone number to "Ticketmaster" popping up on NuWORLD. But it's SOMETHING, a ray of hope. Sure, the gigs will be in small venues and will *NOT* have the same atmosphere as a UK gig (not by a long shot). But we're not Numan fans because of the atmosphere at gigs: we love the music and we love the man, and the HOPE that he may be making a North American tour is making a lot of people very, very happy. It just pisses me off that some people would choose to piss all over that hope rather than do as you've done: wish us well and toss us a bit of the respect that, quite frankly, I believe that we as a group have earned. For that sir, I thank you most kindly on behalf of myself and (if I may be so bold) on behalf of ALL North American fans. Now let me return the favour. I saw Gary play here in Calgary back in 1980, and it was a stunning, stunning show. The gigs I saw on the Premier Tour weren't as stunning.... smaller stage, reduced lights (by a LONG shot), conservative song lineup. But the FANS present at the gig added another dimension to the experience, one that I didn't quite expect, and the result is that I enjoyed these shows MORE than the one I saw here. You guys sure know how to party and how to enjoy a good show. Cheers mate, and a tip of the toque to you all! /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom numanoid@netway.ab.ca lindstrj@cadvision.com / http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/ / "There's a reason 'Wheel Of Fortune' is on right after 'Jeopardy'. Radio here stinks, and the record/CD stores are about as progressive as glaciers. I have been listening to Gary Numan since about 1980. I have a LOT of Gary's records, especially the older (1979-1984 stuff). I have Living Ornaments set. Love that. I seen Gary Numan at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Pasadena CA in 1982. I still remember that like it happned yesterday. GREAT STUFF!!! Hey if is anyone can answer some questions about Gary...please e-mail me at: EPorter600@AOL.com. Tressler" Subject: Numan Digest To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thanks so much for adding me to your mailing list. Hi! I'm Mike Tressler, a self-employed graphic artist (and make no money at it) and field representative for a company called Market America (and make alot of money for that), and I live in Connellsville, PA. I bought the 45 single of Cars in 1980, and subsequently the Pleasure Principle album, and I've been hooked ever since. After the I, Assassin album, I thought Gary had given up music all together. Then in '88 I began to find more of his music in a really cool record shop in Pittsburgh. Up until finding Numan websites and fans on the web, I used to think that I was the only fan in the entire U.S. My music interests may seem strange to fellow Numan fans. I'm big into Van Halen (Edward and Gary share alot of creative similarities), as well as Collective Soul, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, The Outfield, The Cars, and other rock bands. The 80's new wave bands are still among my favorites: Berlin, A Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx, and Blondie. I hope to hear of Gary on tour in the states, as I've never seen him live. I enjoyed everyone's letters in the digest. All Numan fans are invited to e-mail me at bookman@hhs.net. Take care, "Friends." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Mar 1997 07:32:06 -0600 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Outtakes tapes To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all! I recently came into an outtakes tape from The Pleasure Principle sessions and was wondering if anyone knew of any other outtakes on tape? Outtakes being the tracks from an album BEFORE they were actually released as the album versions. Almost like demo versions, except maybe more "polished" as in Gary working on the tracks in the studio for the album. It's quite interesting to hear the evolution of these tracks and I'd love to trade my tape for any other outtake tapes that might exist. Drop me a message, if you've got such rarities! The review appears in todays Daily Telegraph - probably the heaviest of Englands serious newspapers: "The songs imply an uneasy but inescapable relationship between man and machine..." "As testimony to the enduring appeal of his compositions, a Numan tribute album is due out next month, featuring such major talents as Beck and...Damon Albarn." "Like his surname, Gary Numan proves reasuringly close to human." These are the only real references to the music, but the review is generally very favourable. How Times Change to quote the original title of The 1930's Rust. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Mar 1997 19:45:58 -0500 From: brezniakdavid@webtv.net (David Brezniak) Subject: Safe Trip To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just hope Gary has a safe trip over to the U.S. and it is very productive... I also wanted to state that, even though I stand behind Gary's every move, I read the statement in last week's digest. I must say I have to agree with Gary all the way. We are fans, and that's great. For the most part, however, we do not know the inside of the music biz, suggestions are ok, but telling someone they're greedy is not. To be honest, Gary has been pumping out albums left and right, and he deserves the recognition. This is a very important time in his life, busier than ever, and, I fear, it will be much harder for Gary to achieve "fame" this time around. He'll have to work extra hard at it, and there are new pressures out there verses 18 years ago. A true fan of Gary will comment on the good and the bad, but we'll still stand behind his every move, as ultimately, it's his life, his career, his finances. I feel confident Gary will make the right decisions and in the end, we'll either benefit from them, or we'll die trying.(I hope not) Enough babbling....We await Gary's return! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 1997 19:49:12 -0800 From: "Rudolph Ronay" Subject: U.S. Tour To: Greetings: I hope Gary makes the "puddle jump" cause I willl see him in L.A. come hell or highwater. Rudy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Mar 1997 13:06:05 +0000 From: colin mc Subject: Weird and Wonderful To: NUMAN@cs.uwp.edu Hi this is a review of Gary's Pleasure Principle album and the Random project,it appeared in the Daily Telegraph on the 29th March:- "Gary Numan appears on the cover of 1979`s The pleasure principle in a natty suit, hoop earring and eye shadow, looking not unlike a high street bank clerk with a rather complicated inner life. The artist contemplates a glowing pink pyramid,a motif which dominates the record album's graphics almost as thoroughly as Gary himself.Like the Numan stage persona,it is sharp, edgy and just a bit mysterious. The songs imply an uneasy but inescapable relationship between man and machine. "Plug me in/and turn me on," urges Gary, preparing to tax the national grid as tectonic plates of synthesiser and guitars collide. As testimony to the enduring appeal of his compositions, a Numan tribute album is due out next month, featuring such major talents as Beck and Blur's Damon Albarn. And Cars, a song from "The Pleasure Principle", has been re-released as a single after it's use in an advertisement attracted fresh interest. "Here in my car/I feel safest of all," Numan confides, but the funky android's cool is undercut by the sweetly hand-written lyrics on the records inner sleeve, and a signed tribute to "The band-who turned basics into songs". With these homely touches, it requires little effort to imagine Gary fine-tuning his character in front of the bedroom mirror, much as a suburban inventor might labour into the small hours over his revolutionary design for a heated cat-flap. Like his surname, Gary Numan proves reassuringly close to human." What a good review from the United Kingdom's leading quality newspaper! ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
