As far as the backing vocals being "bubblegummy," I always figured that it was Gary's idea in trying something completely new by combining "upbeat" live/studio bands (to the point of a Vegas/Prince review) by adding female vocals to his usual situation (his finesse for slightly unsettling and yet completely life-affirming musical and lyrical perspectives that we've all come to know and love). This works almost to the point of catharsis with songs like "My Breathing" and "Strange Charm." In my opinion "This Prison Moon," "A Child With The Ghost," "The Iceman Comes," and "Don't Call My Name," to name but a few, couldn't have happened, or at least they couldn't have had the same kind of power, without the female vocals. I think the words "save my soul" sung with a woman's voice is another example of Gary knowing exactly what he's doing and succeeding at it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 13:49:07 GMT From: Dean Routledge Subject: Guitar audition To: numan@cs.uwp.edu dear gary i live in the UK and am wondering how you choose your guitarists. Derek, thank you for including me in your mailing list,so ,now, let me introduce myself. My name is William Wilson and I live in Glasgow,Scotland.I've been a Numan fan since the first appearance on T.O.T.P's I have a group of friends that all met through Numan and we attend gigs together, and meet up everynow and then to catch up on the latest happenings,as a group we call ourselves "The Glasgow Crazies",stemming from the '94 gig in Hammersmith when "Big Gal" Gary Leyton whispered to use where gary was staying,we took a cab costing us £30 to get back to there just so we could chat with the man himself, but it was worth evey penny I also like to take pictures and Joey Lindstrom was kind enough to create a gallery for my pictures on his webb site"the world wide webb" I have met Gary loads of times now,so much that he recognises us all at the gigs, the whole band are great eo chat with after the shows and it is then you realise just how MAD Ade Orange really is. To sum up,I cant wait for October to come around and "The Crazies" decend on another Numan gig,and to put my tuppenceworth in,good luck to the fans in North America, god knows you deserve it,I know how pissed I feel if gary dosn't include Glasgow on a tour, Anyway, thanks for listening to my ranting, take care William Wilson MUSIC OF QUALITY HAS NO FEAR OF TIME (PETE WYLIE,WAH!) --------------------------------------------------------- Get Your *Web-Based* Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 1997 09:59:33 +1000 From: mark.taylor@deetya.gov.au Subject: Numanews Item To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello Derek and all subscribers, I was cruising the cold streets of Canberra the other day and happened to stumble across a Best Of album for Shakatak. Inside, the sleeve notes made mention of Bill Sharpe being partnered by Gary Numan in the mid-80s for a number of hit singles in the UK. Just thought it was interesting. God, Change Your Mind was good. I even saw a video of it once, now I come to think of it. I think Gary was standing in the middle of a ring of girls who were circling him and lashing out at him. Also, I seem to recall there were a lot of plaster casts of his head being smashed etc, with intermittent images of Texas(?) oil pumps pumping for oil. As an aside, the only other single of Gary's since AFE, Cars, WAG, I Die: You Die and CYM that I've seen on Australian Television is Radio Heart. A bloke who once tried to be a pop star with the moniker of "Richard Wild" back-announced Radio Heart and said something along the following lines: "Yeah, that was a little interesting though I have to admit I was never a huge Gary Numan fan." I have two questions for you. Is Kipper still a member of Gary's band and, when I was in the UK, I noticed a single by Gary with somebody called Dadang (spelling)??? Could somebody fill me in? Have a good one, everybody ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 1997 15:36:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Micromuzak@aol.com Subject: Numan on AOL To: Numan@cs.uwp.edu Logged into the Musicspace area on America On Line today. Low and behold they had a feature on Gary's U.S release of Premiere Hits. Not too bad of a write up on Gary and the album. After not seeing anything by Gary on the highly commercial AOL, I was very surprised. Check it out! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Apr 1997 18:39:19 +0100 From: "nick" Subject: opinion unlimited To: Hi to all users out there :) First let me say that I have been a GN fan since the beggining. Despite this it doesn`t mean if he farted in a bucket and recorded it I would buy it. I suppose his influence on myself is at an end simply cos I have lost respect for him as an artist. This has happened in the last year or so, and was probably triggered by the lack of any new material. I know there are many GN fans who share this view and as many that dont. Anyway my point is that GN has gone down the Gary glitter path. :) Where he is always likely to get a little media coverage as long as he does Cars. The difference between GN and GG is clear to any Numan fan but to others the line that devides them is not so clear. Gary likes to be taken serious but any more shows like the White room, Noels house party or the C5 appearence will damage his image.. I used to think he looked moody dark and mysterious. The above shows shattered that illusion into a million peices.I wouldn` have bothered to appear I would have had more pride and simply said I will play this and that and if that isn`t good enough tough shit. Fuck the publicity thats negative stuff anyway. If there are any fans out there that think that the above TV shows in any way helped Gary to be taken more seriously then email me as I would be very happy to debate this point a little further. Before I go, I will put my hands up to Gary`s last reply in the digest stating that one person had called him a greedy fucking bastard for witholding the Exile CD. I did feel Gary took my comments out of context, there are always two sides to any story. I guess in here I know what side everyone will be on :) See you all around. "Random" will be a two-disc set, labelled Random 1 and Random 2, featuring covers and remixes of Gary's songs by some of the top acts in today's UK music scene... acts like Republica, Jesus Jones, Gravity Kills, and many others. This is a heavy-hitting lineup featuring a veritable who's-who listing of the best of today's UK music scene, and should certainly be seen as a MAJOR endorsement of Gary Numan and the impact he's had on today's music. At last count, it will contain a total of 26 different songs, some of which will be covered twice and one of which will be covered THREE TIMES.
