Gary Numan Digest Sun, 20 Apr 97 Volume 1 : Issue 323 Today's Topics: Censorship Gary Numan (2 msgs) Gary Numan Digest V1 #321 Irony... Random - PSBs are out Sacrifice...WOW! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 02:45:03 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Censorship To: "INTERNET:numan@cs.uwp.edu" Matthew Holbrook (who incidentally, I think, gives Numan fans an excellent service) raises an important subject on his News page. He mentions the possible implications of the lyrical content of Exile, a subject I first mentioned on Robert Eggleston's Debate page. The issue is the perceived anti-religous content of the album, which Matthew H seems to think may cause Gary problems in the States. He even goes so far as to tentatively suggest a re-write may be needed. >From a personal point of view I think all superstition whether it's belief in god(whichever version), faith healing, astrology, UFO abductions or avoiding days of the week with a d in them is a bad thing and any move to challenge those beliefs should be encouraged. However that's not much use to Gary if Exile is boycotted because of peoples sensibilities. I think I can defend Exile from a purely commercial point of view. There doesn't seem to be much evidence for album sales being damaged by the lyrical content (unless you're aiming at a market where the parents buy the music for their children). On the contrary, what little I know on the subject suggests that a bit of controversy is a good thing. I'm thinking of Prince, Marilyn Manson... Perhaps a "Parental Advisory" sticker is a key sales technique??? After all, if Randy Newman can get away with it, why not Gary Numan? "You taught me not to believe in those things" By the way, I read on someone's Web site recently that although Gary is against established religion, he may still believe in God. Well, he does believe in some strange things but I can assure you he doesn't believe in God, or at least he didn't 6 months ago. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 00:28:48 -0700 From: KEVIN GOODCHILD Subject: Gary Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi just wondering if anyone uses this page as there dosnt seem to be any updates for a while or am I looking at the wrong screen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 00:28:48 -0700 From: KEVIN GOODCHILD Subject: Gary Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi just wondering if anyone uses this page as there dosnt seem to be any updates for a while or am I looking at the wrong screen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Apr 1997 20:08:00 GMT From: simeon.hope@gexpress.gn.apc.org (Simeon Hope) Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #321 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Regarding Nick Fox's comments about Gary's appeal, career direction and management, he is exactly right. But how to convince the man himself? He's always been very sure of his own ideas, which has sometimes worked but probably only about 25% of the time. He really needs a good manager and to be willing to listen to people who know about the business. No matter how experienced we are, having someone else to give us good ideas/advice is always helpful. Since becoming a fan in 1979, I watched Gary's sales go steadily down, yet in interviews he never seemed too bothered. Some good collaborations would have been worthwhile, plus (as Nick said) having a weather eye on current and upcoming trends. It never did Bowie any harm. --- * OLXWin 1.00a * OH NO!!! They ARE glass". The following is taken from Page 54 of the May edition: "Finally, apologies to the Pet Shop Boys for mistakenly reporting that they were to appear on the Gary Numan tribute LP. Seems they are NOT glass, after all" Well at least that's cleared that one up. The PSB's involvement in Random was also reported a few months back in Vox. Perhaps they were considering it at some stage. So 1 down, 3 to go. I would like to thank everyone who answered my question about finding the "Dance"/"First Album" cd. I'll soon have it thanks to all of you! Well, the copy of "Sacrifice" that I special ordered came in today. The extended version is the one that I received. Is there any real difference between the regular edition and the extended edition (other than the lengths of the songs) ? I don't know if I should also order that version too. Any comments would be helpful. Anyway, "Sacrifice" is excellent! I was so surprised how really good it was. And hey, there's not even any female back-up singers to slow down the pace:) :) If you haven't heard this release check it out as soon as you can. You won't be sorry! I placed a few others on order today. These import prices are murder! Oh well, Gary's worth it though. Best wishes and cheers to all! ---- Michael LeBlanc ---MLEB67@AOL.COM (Michigan) ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
