To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) First off, I am still fuming about my Real Audio not working Saturday night...the only part of the show I was able to hear was the first fifteen minutes or so as I was on hold to talk to Gary. I DID get to hear Republica's 'RFE?' cover and if the rest of the album compares, I'm gonna camp out at Mad Platter until it comes in! At least I got to talk to Gary *swoon* and to cap off a fantastic evening the Red Wings won the first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs (you have no idea how much pressure my hubby was putting on me to add "Go Wings!" to my on air bit for all Canada to hear). If anyone has a tape of the show (hint hint, I've heard at least ONE of you has) I'd love to get ahold of it! Now, on to the digest...did I miss the Outland bashing? Guess I must not have gotten that digest. Now I've never heard Outland, but I soon will get my hands on a copy and I can't wait to find out what is so bad about it... Austin asked some interesting questions, ones which I've asked myself since finding out that Gary is having troubles finding and keeping decent management abroad. In fact, the jist of my question to Gary on the RealTime broadcast was about his management on this side of the pond. Gary's reply was to the effect that he is as puzzled by this as anyone and will pursue professional representation in North America, hopefully this time emphasizing PROFESSIONAL! He as much as admitted his dad was more a financial manager than a musical manager, and that he is in no way planning on trying to make deals long distance by himself, so there is hope yet that he'll get over here. So from what Gary himself said, I don't think it's an issue of wanting to handle everything himself or refusing professional advice. Let's not forget that much of Gary's independance in his music was forced upon him by past problems with the press and such, and he's done better on his own than just about anybody could, but I'm sure he realizes how crucial a period this is in his career and he's not about to squander it. As to Ahmed...wow! a latecomer to Numan! It will be great to hear a fresh voice in the Numan following and see how a new fan perceives all the hooplah...be sure to give us your view often, Ahmed! Back to Austin: thanks for posting the quotes from VOX. Now even my husband (who even now only reluctantly admits to liking Gary even though he's always stealing my tapes for his car) is eagerly awaiting Kinsman. And finally, Miss Marlene...hehehe, are we always on the same wavelength? Keep on girl! (And I AM going to ask him THE QUESTION when he gets over here...and tell him YOU'RE the one who wants to know) Cheers (I gotta stop doing this Brit stuff...what's a California sign-off?) The fact is that if random doesnt sell well and also Exile goes the same way then the chance of there being a another upturn for Garys future in the new millenium will be non existent. We have just waited three years for the Exile album will it be another three to the next one. I know people say that it doesnt matter if Numan succeed or not but just try buying Numan gear in the shops hes now so unknown you cant even find his albums very easily. If he were succesfull hed be in the shops hed get the support he needs to be the great artist that he is. random shows the great enthusiam that exists for Gary amongst other artists but I guess there will be no newer tracks of numan done by these artists because they only respect his retro stuff. I would like other people to say what they think the future for gary is in the new millenium. I for one hope we dont lose Gary and I hope that this years activitys will retain the long lost credibiltiy and that he will stay with us. If cars could hit the uk with no 17 does it not seem rather ironic that new stuff cnat do this. Gary is talented beyound belief look at his prolific output in the first few years of his career. I hope now that succes may come and give back the fans better merchandise and plain dam stock. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/3403 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jun 1997 23:14:45 -0400 (EDT) From: DaliFriend@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #335 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings! This is one of my many attempts to try and write to Gary himself. I must say, I have nothing but bad luck with the addresses and fax numbers I have used in the past. Can you ensure that Gary would receive the following message? It really means a lot to me to know that Gary himself will read my words. What I would like to convey to Gary is the following: 1June1997 Dear Gary, How can I express to you how much you have meant to me in the past 15 years? Long ago, I heard your music and embraced it close to my heart. I memorized your lyrics and music and even carved your name into my school desk!! (It is too bad that I mispelled your name at that time!! ) :) Yours was the very first concert I ever attended. (Akron, Ohio 1980) I was only 15 then, and went wild at your concert waving homemade banners and screaming above the rest of the crowd. I was so thrilled when I swore that you actually saw us from the stage and gave us a special smile!!! It has always been my fantasy to be able to shake your hand in person and tell you these things. I may never get to England, and you may not get back to Ohio, but the past sure has been fun, hasn't it? If you could find it in your heart to send an overseas fan a mere photo and autograph, I promise that you will make a humble fan an estatic one!!!! Anthony) Subject: Gary Numan interview request To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello, My name is Mitchell Anthony. I run a fairly succesful web site from Silicon Valley. And no, I'm not writing today to gloat or anything... I'm writing because I love (and have loved since '79) Gary's music. I'd like to offer some assistance. I was nominateed Cool Web Designer of the Year for '96 so my commercial web site tends to get a lot of traffic - around 29,000 hits a day. My average visitor is somewhere between 15 - 35 years old, loves music and all things eccentric: just the perfect age for Gary's appeal in America. I'm rolling out a brand new web site withing two weeks. There's going to be some cross-promotional ties-ins with other major web sites, etc... and I'd love to see that Gary get's some promotion out of this. All I'm asking for is an e-mail interview with the man. I'll be happy to send a list of questions to him which he can answer and return w/ a few jpeg photos he'd like to accompany the article. His article will recieve prominant attention at the front of the web site (for two weeks,) will run indefinately (within the interview archives,) and a link to his home page can be included. *Also* there will be no editing by myself or anyone else here as to the content of his questions. He can use this article as a promo boost in America, he can talk about Random, Exile, whatever helps the cause. Respond to me directly and I'll be pleased to give you the privat url for the new web site. Also: you can view my current web site at -- www.madworks.com. It was a good night - best fun Ive had at one yet! Lots of dancing, as well as lots of cider and cigarettes... Lots and lots of posing and posturing by myself and Phil, but try as we may we couldnt outdo some of the people there !! some of Random was played early and sounds like quite a mixed bag. HIghlight that I heard was Gravity Kills' "Poetry and Power", although Moloko's "AFE" sounded promising although the DJ took it off after about 10 seconds ! I have managed to blag a copy form a DJ friend as he says there's not a chance in hell he'll use it on his show, so I'll hopefully drop a review in the next digest. Incidentally, if you're a guy who was there there from Billericay wearing a Kraftwerk T-shirt, and was talking to a Scottish guy in a Pansy Division T-shirt, drop me an email on amchaffie@meto.gov.uk - didnt have time to give you my number... Peck Slip have made even I Cant Stop sound good ! Posh's "Shes got claws' is fabulous, complete with smoe amazing misquoted lyrics..., and Films by Underdog is also great with loads of irrelevant Senser / Dub War style rapping... Disappointments include the rather bland We Are So Fragile by Jesus Jones, but thats made up for by Bis's excellent version later on, and the inclusion of 3 versions of AFE, particularly the one by Republica, which is so faithful to the original to be pointless (it even includes a loop straight off Sacrifice) But all in all, this is a great album. Even the packaging is fab! Elisa Jaraba - in regards to America being "virgin territory", this of course was just me rambling on (and I'm glad you agreed). Gary said virtually the same thing on the recent "Realtime" interview on CBC Stereo. He went on to say that the fact that many American artists not only can say they've heard of him, but also claim to have been INFLUENCED by him, is both surprising and flattering in the extreme, especially given his "one-hit-wonder" status in the USA. I think this realization (that America is virgin again) is extremely evident when you see the ways he's been trying to move back into that market - not as a superstar on a comeback, but as a brand new artist looking for his first break. Gary Numan is a mature man - I would expect that this would have involved swallowing a small amount of pride, but he did it anyway. Mike Damrath - boy oh boy I gotta start writing more clearly. I am *NOT* an Outland HATER, I am an Outland DEFENDER.... the conversation I mentioned involved my telling somebody that Outland was *NOT* as bad as many American fans say it is, and went on to tell him that I play many tracks from that album quite frequently (except "Whisper" - cuz my CD is scratched and that one skips). You're not the first person to misinterpret what I said so obviously the fault here is mine. Let it be said clearly, then, for the record, that Joey Lindstrom *DOES* like Outland a whole heckuva lot. :-) OK, that's out of the way: The "Realtime" show on CBC Stereo tonight went off without a hitch... ok, well, it had one technical snafu when a certain caller from Calgary wasn't connected immediately and almost got "bumped" but was then saved at the last possible second. That caller, in case you're still in the dark, was me. :-) I'm going to save my detailed analysis of the interview for a couple of days and HOPEFULLY should have something for the Thursday Digest (the one you're reading now, I hope) - if not, then it'll show up on Sunday. I need some sleep and I've got a hectic schedule over the next two days, and there's a WHOLE HECK OF A LOT of ground to cover. By the way, who else from the Digest made it on the air? I recognized an emailed question from Miss Marlene (webmistress of the "Absolution" site) and I think I figured out one or two others, but since the show's host didn't give us any last names, I have no idea who all managed to get a question answered by Gary. Anyways, I'll sign off this message for now with the following parting comments: 1) I think a lot of people, myself included, were harboring more than a few doubts about "Random", and specifically whether or not it would be shite or whether it might actually be not too bad. Folks.... they played three tracks on this show, and they were not shite. There were also not "not bad". They were BLOODY AMAZING! The cover of "Poetry And Power", by Gravity Kills, is absolutely phenomenal, and more importantly WOULD FIT RIGHT IN ON ANY ROCK-ORIENTED RADIO STATION IN NORTH AMERICA. It's hard, it's thrashy, and it's just plain GREAT. The other two songs played were "Everyday I Die" by Dubstar (very nice but not radio-friendly) and "Friends" by Pop Will Eat Itself (brilliant, but borderline radio-friendly). These songs are well done, WELL PRODUCED (don't get me started), and have an amazing ENERGY to them that seems to be missing from almost every other Numan cover I've ever heard (well, ok, Marilyn Manson and Christian Death being excluded). I sincerely hope these tracks are indicative of the overall quality of "Random" - if so, we are in for one outstanding TREAT! Even Gary loves it! :-) By the way, Gary says that he's planning to play "Poetry And Power" on this year's UK tour, but re-arranged to play it the way Gravity Kills have done it, because there version is BETTER (no kidding - Gary actually said that). 2) A sense of optimism virtually oozed from the man. Despite the recent disappearance of his man in New York, he seems extremely positive about what the future will hold for him, including possibly doing some work with, and maybe touring with, Gravity Kills. Again, we should view this from a "I'll believe it when I see it" point of view, but things seem to be different these days. No more pipe dreams... just definite, achievable goals. I've always worn my fandom of Gary Numan as a badge of honour. But lemme tell you... I am more PUMPED WITH EXCITEMENT about being a Numan fan in 1997 than perhaps at any previous point in his career (with perhaps the exception of 1980). I'll follow this with a more in-depth analysis of the Realtime interview, and I should have some sound bites (and maybe some song clips!) on my World Wide Webb site by (I hope) Thursday. /--------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 (403) 606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@netway.ab.ca lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEB: http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/ / / "There's a reason 'Wheel Of Fortune' is on right after 'Jeopardy'. I'll direct you to check it out for yourself, either at my site or at the CBC Realtime site at: http://realtime.cbcstereo.com Some of the most interesting NEWS bits that surfaced include: - Gary confirmed that his New York representative seems to have vanished - Doug Furley(?) of Gravity Kills is to remix "Exile" - Gary will re-arrange some old songs that have been covered on "Random" and perform them on the upcoming tour IN THE FASHION THAT IT WAS COVERDED ON "RANDOM". That is, when he plays "Poetry And Power" he will play it the way Gravity Kills played it, which is dramatically different from the original. - The Premier Tour video is still on hold and COULD be delayed until after the upcoming tour.
