I was just wondering if anyone is a collector of the Audio Principle or Noise Noise cassette fanzines? If you are, drop me a note as I have a couple of questions regarding what certain issues contain. I've recently traded some folkes on the Digest for a few issues of both fanzines and they're quite interesting to listen to, but I'd like to know more about the other issues that I don't have. Jeff Tolva (The Machman) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 1997 15:56:48 -0500 From: David Datta Subject: Buggy software To: numan Hi all, seems we have found a bug in the list stuff. I think I have it fixed now. It seems the list has been filtering out all lines that began with a period. I don't know how long it has been doing this but I believe it is fixed now. The most recent message that had this problem follows, hopefully, this time it will be complete. -Dave datta@cs.uwp.edu Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 22:20:51 -0700 From: Miss Marlene Subject: Walking "ON" Your Soul... To: Numan Digest >A1. A little sad to read that you only think I've made one great album >since 1980, I'm a little surprised that you still consider yourself a >fan. Also, I don't mean to be rude but, I find your comments about the >music on 'You Walk In My Soul', how can I put this, lacking in >understanding. ...to say the least! >'You Walk In My Soul' is not a sad song, it is not about being lonely, >it's theme is very positive and it sounds the way it does because >that's what I wanted. ...and that's how it comes across! >As it's my song ...emphasize MY! >I would suggest that I'm the best person to decide ...emphasize I'M THE BEST PERSON TO DECIDE! >if it came out the way I intended, and it most definitely did. You may >think that you could have produced it better, and you could well be right, ...somehow I seriously DOUBT IT! but I can assure you that, in it's current form, it is not 'completely wrong'. LOL! All I can say to this is: "HIGH FIVE GARY" Love it, love it! I must also say that I am definately not one for love/slow songs...but this song is simply beautiful (I have it framed)...why don't you listen to the song again, paying attention to the lyrics this time...you should find that it is indeed very positive... The CBC page said something about reconfiguring, so it wasn't available. The random album sounds excellent. So the question to the digest is . What label is it being released on ? Glenn Bridges ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 1997 16:25:27 -0000 From: Markus Dietrich Subject: GN in german Press To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Hello Numanoids, I lately read the germ. music magazine ZILLO (June) and as I came to the last side (the "what will be in the next issue"-side) I wrote the name GARY NUMAN !!! Absolutely (positively) shocked about that, because I can never remember on an whole article of GN in a german music magazine at all (aside of some very small items). And if it will be only a short item THEY woudn't mention it at this side !!! ZILLO is (I think) the No.1 for music kinds like GOTHIC, ELECTRO, INDIE, INDUSTRIAL, AVANDGARDE, ... and has a big circulation german-width. So I'm very very very very looking forward to ZILLO of July 97 !!! I do not know what the exact reason of the article is. Is it me, who sent ZILLO some e-mails or faxes over the last years (and the last on RANDOM) OR is it the machinery of Beggars Banquet which indeed had done something at the german market ?!?!?!?!?!?!? Anyways. You could expect a whole report of this coming article from me when the new ZILLO issue appears. Maybe this article is a little late for promoting? RANDOM, but I have no idea when RANDOM is available in german at all. bye, Markus from Nuremberg/Germany ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 14:25:54 +900 (JST) From: Manno Toshikazu Subject: Kraftwerk To: numan@cs.uwp.edu << Date: Mon, 02 Jun 1997 13:02:48 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: Kraftwerk To: numan@cs.uwp.edu HAs anyone got the address dor the Kraftwerk Digest ? For those who missed the URLs last time, Joey's WAV format page is http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/realtime/ and CBC RealTime's RealAudio page is http://realtime.cbcstereo.com Included are three cuts from Random and a great mix of the RFE? covers. (By the way, just got off the phone with Mad Platter...it's in on the 10th and they are listing it (for now, subject to change, no guarantees and all that) at the sale price of $13.99...call them at (909) 351-6910 (Riverside, CA) for more info.) Don't forget to let Don know that you are a big Gary Numan fan, as we are still working on the deal for him to carry Numa stock directly from them...just have to get Tony to work out the details.) I imagine the question of the month is going to be "Which RFE? cover is the best?" and from the mix on RealTime, I have to go with Republica...not only because Gary does a duet with Saffron, but because, hey, I just happen to love Republica. I will reserve final judgement until the 10th, however, when I can hear all of them in full and at CD quality. For those of you who already have the album, let me know which is your pick and why.... Oh, and a note for Joey...the Lisa on the interveiw is lil ole me, LYSSA!...jeez, see, nobody gets my name right either! So you now have three Numan Networkers in that interveiw. And I hope Gary noticed that there were THREE questions (2 live, 1 email) from right here in the Inland Empire...do I see Gary playing the Orange Show? Even better, gigantic Blockbuster Pavilion, but maybe that's expecting too much. Responding to the last digest.... Nicholas Sullivan: Random shows the great enthusiam that exists for Gary amongst other artists but I guess there will be no newer tracks of numan done by these artists because they only respect his retro stuff. Um, hello...Nicholas, perhaps you miss the point of Random...it's about how Gary influenced their music, so of course they're going to cover the songs they heard when they were growing up. It in no way reflects their attitude toward his recent work, and indeed the interest by GKills and Marilyn Manson (among others) in Exile proves that point. As for how I see Gary's future, just take a look at the cyberpunk character I've written up based on him (with his gracious permission) (http://www,geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/6115/thenuman.html) and you'll see the future I fantasize...by 2000 Gary is at near god status and is the hero of every musician alive by the year 2020 ("Beatles? Stones? Aren't those the guys Gary mentioned in the song 'London Times' or something?") Okay, maybe a bit optimistic, but hey, it's my fantasy. Realistically, I see a revival for Gary that is comparable to another of my long-time favorites who I followed when nobody knew him, Neil Young. Neil, like Gary, has always been known for doing music his way, evolving his style, and for looking after his own interests, and for a good bit there he was quite forgotten...I'm sure his standing in Europe was as dismal as Gary's in North America right now...and he was stuck doing bits on CBC and playing decent venues only in his native Alberta. But when alternative music hit the fore, every artist out there claimed him as their influence. Even when the press and the industry were saying things like "Alternative music is basically anything that isn't Neil Young." (That one was a direct quote by a KROQ executive in the Los Angeles Times...can we say Out of Touch?) By the end of that same year, Neil was touring with Pearl Jam, Soul Asylum, Smashing Pumpkins...and whole a whole new generation got turned on to his music. Fortunately, Neil is so stubborn that he continues to delight us by playing HIS style instead of trying to change for popularity's sake, and he remains alive and well and makes more than enough new music to keep his old and new fans happy with enough popularity to keep his music readily available. I see no reason why the same will not happen with Gary, since all you have to do is reverse the countires and insert electronica where alternative is and you have Gary instead of Neil. I see him joining GKills, NIN, Republica, Marilyn Manson, whoever, on tour, and the (for the most part younger) fans of those groups jumping on him like Gothics on a bottle of sunblock. I see the whole makeup of Gary's fanbase changing, for better or worse, with several of us 'oldtimers' and a whole gaggle of zit-cream addicted...what was that word the Brits always use...oiks? The only problem with getting Gary's music will be getting to the store before they sell out. Tamara, jeeps, you sound like me! Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that Gary got your message, since he doesn't read the digest, his hands being full at the moment with his career...however, if you go to his webpage, you can get the current address for his fan club, and I am sure they'd be able to get it to him =). The URL if you don't have it bookmarked at the top of your browser already is http://www.numan.co.uk ....good luck, let us know if you get the pic! Mitchell, please please please let us know the instant you get that exclusive interview with Gary. I plan to link the heck out of it! Hmmmm...I'm so jealous of the UKers who get to go to Numan Discos (geez, that's a hard word for a Yank to even think about...) Maybe when Random and Exile make Gary top bill over here, we can import the idea...of course the name will have to be changed for this side of the pond, Disco having too many negative connotations. Andy: Peck Slip have made even I Cant Stop sound good ! Andy, you have got to be kidding...somebody managed to do something with the only Numan song I regularly skip over because IMHO it's crap I woudn't force Tim McVeigh to listen to? Anyway, I can't wait to get my hands on it...thanks for your review =)! Joey: What can I say...I agree with you on all of your assessment of the Random cuts we heard on the RealTime broadcast. My pick for most played single on radio is GKills' Poetry and Power (heck I emailed the WAV to my 17 yo GKills crazy friend in El Paso and he's going nuts waiting for the album). PWEI's Friends cover was great, and, in SoCal at least, will fit in great on several stations I listen to. I wasn't overly thrilled with Dubstar's Everyday I Die, but I'm not too familiar with them and I will reserve judgement until I've played it a few thousand times. And did you hear his comment about partying with the fans after shows if he gets over here? *swoon* I will be there, breathing the same air as him, getting several rolls of film's worth of pics...I CAN'T WAIT! by the way, keep rambling...you do it so well =). Well, I'll catch you all on Numan chat this Sunday (today by the time this gets out) and you'd all better be there! Or I'll sick some octopi on you! (Sorry, had to get my Red Wings reference in for the day =).) I downloaded the WAV files from Joey's RealTime page and got on IRC. Now I knew there were some GKills and PWEI fans there, so I asked them if they wanted to hear the WAVs...they said sure, I ddced them over , and they went nuts!!!! They asked for anything else I might have, and I sent them to Gary's page to listen to the clips from Exile. I'm proud to announce that there are now four new Numanoids out there. These are people who when I talked about Gary before they simply politely said "I'll check it out" and never did, but having their favorite bands doing covers of his stuff convinced them to give him a try, and they liked what they heard. One of them left right away to head down to his local Wherehouse for Premeir Hits. If this is what it takes to get people to give Gary a listen, I'm more than thrilled. Of course, I'm the kind of annoying Numan apostle who spent over an hour talking to a saleswoman from MCI about Gary (who she'd never heard of but her English boyfriend who was working next to her knew), so it's not unusual for me to make converts...it's just that Random is not only a great album in itself, it really sells Gary! Anyway, got to go converting all my system sounds to Random clips...can't wait for this album! =) Lyssa Tearin it up..I'm living on empty... (I'm not trying to make you feel bad, Matt. If the new service is better, then something good came out of all of it.) Anyways, it was nice talking to the folks on Saturday evening. Hey, Andy!
