Unlike Numan, Neil had always received critical approval. Neil always gets the press, yet how many Numan albums got major reviews? Unlike Numan, Neil moved from one successful group (Buffalo Springfield) to another (CSNY) and can always participate in a reunion tour/recording whenever the cashflow demands it. Unlike Numan, Neil's songs get covered at a grass-roots level, by college bands, by fans, by bar singers (I suppose you could have a bash at Joe the Waiter, but try entertaining an Irish pub crowd by strumming Sleep By Windows or Berserker). Finally, unlike Numan, Neil Young is considered cool--not a moody sci-fi bizarro but a reasonably regular Joe. His "cult" status still makes him a marketable, bankeable star, whereas Numan, despite his original music and the success of 15 years ago, is neither. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jun 1997 12:00:53 +0200 From: Uffe Subject: To: "'Numan'" >From: alexander way >Subject: trik Musik >To: numan@cs.uwp.edu >Former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos released a record of his own >material a few years ago, calling the project Elektrik Musik. Hi Alex No it isnt, (really dont know which single you refer to TV, Crosstalk or Lifestyle),but they are if anything Kraftwerkesque especially TV. Appropriate listening for a Numanoid it is, but it doesnt sound like Numan. But then again I could be as wrong as I was with the Outland CD ;-). Finding the CDs would perhaps be a bit trickier, atleast TV and Crosstalk. By the way Kraftwerk will release a new CD in September................ (Anyone remember Technopop???). When asked what music she liked dancing too she replied "Oh i love dancing to GARY NUMAN". So there you have it. If you ever feel the urge to strip off,Numans music is the only choice. I wonder what Gary would make of that? A whole new audience base he never even thaught of ! Walters" Subject: Numan News To: Gary Numan Hello all, For the record, I was the "Troy from Indiana" on the CBC Interview with Gary. News: The July 97 issue of AP (Alternative Press) magazine has a short interview with Gary. On pages 42 and 43, under the title "No Introduction Necessary" by Jason Pettigrew (photo by Lee Locke) there is a 10 question interview. I found the article to be quite positive. Also, there is a sidebar titled "Suggested Listening" which shows the "Replicas" album cover, and lists "Tubeway Army" "Replicas" "The Pleasure Principle" & "I, Assassin" with little comments. I will be contacting AP for permission to reprint the interview here in the Digest -- for our worldwide readers. I'm sure they will support this. It's that whole copyright thing... we don't like it when certain groups take advantage of Gary's material, so I will not do this to someone else. BTW, there is also a review of "Premier Hits" which calls Gary "...the first true genius of '80's pop." Also, in the "A Flock Of Sequels -- The '80-otic Rock Revival Gets Underway" article, Gary is mentioned in the Kenickie article. Lauren, "My favorite bands were Sparks and Gary Numan." Also the Nancy Boy paragraph mentions Gary. All in all, Gary is mentioned more in this particular issue than any other artist! That's saying something. If you have access to AP (this issue available until July 3) I recommend it. If not, please be patient. If I am refused, I will let you know. Gary also shows up twice in the latest Rolling Stone: he describes his new stereo equipment and there is a short review of "Premier Hits" -- hey, it's better than no exposure! More later, -- Troy L. I remember that to get a copy of Micro Machine video you had to send a blank tape to the publishers where they recorded a copy for you. I have just bought the Random CD from HMV in Bath. I was in half a mind not to but after reading the Digest I decided I had to. I can’t say that I like every track but in particular I enjoyed; St Etienne, Storm trooper ID (although it does go on to long). Matt Sharp etc., We have a Technical. Gavity Kills, Poetry and Power An Pierle, AFE Posh, She’s got Claws Kenickie, I’m an Agent Chris Holmes, RIWV Dubstar, Every day I die Deadsy, Replicas Pop will eat itself, Friends Republica, AFE. Bis, WASF Dave Clarke, Cars None of them are as good as the originals. I have no problem with people covering his work but in general their interpretations are just to empty (perhaps I am just getting to old) and do not carry the emotion that Gary seems to be able to by default. If these songs were not Gary’s I would not have bought the CD and I just hope that I am getting old and that the younger generation will like it. In many ways the Random CD reminded me of a LP recorded in 1981 called Some Bizarre. This was a collection of recordings from, then, un-signed bands such as Blancmange, Soft Cell and Depeche Mode. I can’t wait for EXILE to come out and maybe I will see some of you at the Bristol venue of his tour. It has been nice talking to you. Kind regards Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 1997 10:35:11 PDT From: "William Wilson" Subject: Random,or the difficulties on buying it To: numan@cs.uwp.edu HI! all from Glasgow,Scotland First off,I managed to buy my copy of "Random" on the day of release....JUST!!!!.Having tried TWO record stores in the west-end of Glasgow and both had SOLD OUT!!(which leads me to think either Gary is going to STORM the chart,or the stores only ordered a couple of copies each...What would your guess be!!!).The third store I visited said they hadn't received it yet and would NOT be getting it until the end of the week,IF I WAS STILL WANTING IT BY THEN!!!!.The FOURTH store I tried was in Glasgow city centre,I had made my way into the city because my friends band"CARNIVAL"(the band that recently held the 'Numan night' in Glasgow)where playing a gig that night,I had telephoned before leaving my house and they told me that they had five copies left,I gave them my name and asked them to put a copy aside and I would pick it up in an hour,"NO PROBLEM!" said the assistant..."GREAT!!! That's it,I've got my copy"thought I....NOT SO!!!!...on reaching TOWER I asked at the desk and a rather embarrassed assistant told me that although their computer STILL said they had five copies left, they COULDN'T FIND THEM.",I was then asked if i could call back later as they were searching the store to track it down and when the find it they would keep me a copy,as I had a gig to go to anyway and the store stays open till midnight I said I would call back, which I did at 11pm and "HOORAY!!!",they had only found them a half hour before hidden amongst some CD singles,I took it home and gave it a spin.... .....over all I was not very impressed but as I listen to it more and more,it is beginning to grow on me,Favorite so far is Gravity kills with An Pierle and Amanda Ghost getting played a lot too.I'm sure my favorites will change from time to time but I have only had it two days now... take care all William Wilson Glasgow --------------------------------------------------------- Get Your *Web-Based* Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 09:25:03 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Random Review To: "INTERNET:numan@cs.uwp.edu" The following review appeared in The Daily Telegraph (UK newspaper) on th= e 7th June: VARIOUS ARTISTS - RANDOM "It might be considered the ultimate irony that an album in tribute to Ga= ry Numan - pop music's most famous Tory supporter - should arrive mere weeks= after the general election. It could also be considered bloody madness. N= ot least because Random turns out to be a double album. However the result is not the complete aural torture you might expect; St= Etienne, Bis, Jesus Jones and the now defunct EMF bash their way through Gazza's back catalogue in a manner that bears almost no relation to the originals. Only Damon Albarn and Weezer's Matt Sharp let the side down with a versio= n of We Have A Technical so faithful that the man himself could have phoned= it in from his cockpit." Not a bad review of the album, per se, but when it comes to Gary, it says= far more about Gary's public image than his music. = We're used to references being made about Gary's supposed politics, to th= e extent that the left wing music press hardly bothered to listen his recor= ds before reviewing them. However it sounds a little strange coming from a newspaper known to many as The Daily Torygraph. It just illustrates how much this aspect of Gary's persona has damaged him, ridiculous as it may seem to anybody who gives it a moments thought. Secondly, it demonstrates the casual lies that writers feel entitled to make. I for one, would be amazed if the reviewer had ever heard the original version of We Have A Technical, and yet he feels qualified to comment on it. He does what most people do - he doesn't know much of Gary= 's work so he assumes it is all like Are 'Friends' Electric? The difference = is that he gets paid for his opinions so he pretends to know what he's talki= ng about. Journalists huh? - the new fascists. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 97 17:09:08 UT From: "Urban Lundqvist" Subject: White Hart To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello!
