However, Gary's name also is mentioned in another german music magazine, the MUSIKEXPRESS (june '97). In the news section there is a short note on Gary, saying that he was looking for a producer for his latest album. The note is no longer than just two or three sentences, but hey, any news is good news. Anyway did anyone like me go to the signing at Tower records on thursday I got three albums signed and briefly spoke with Gary but does anyone know who the guy who looked just like David Bowie was, I had to leave before eleven does anyone know if they go round to playing exile, it was a cool night I hope the Numan enterprise can organise more such stuff Nick. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 16:38:34 +0100 From: NICHOLAS SULLIVAN Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #338 To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" > http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/3403 try this out > ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 1997 08:53:47 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: Jukeboxes! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu And thewre's a double Gary Numan CD on the jukebox in Popstarz Bar, George Court just off the Strand.. On the journalists being wankers thread - yep - accept it - get over it ! It doesnt MATTER what they say - as long as you have the record, who cares ! Gary isnt going to be cool again, (particularly if he keeps taking on any TV program that asks him cos theyre doing an 80s thing - Light Lunch and Noel Edmonds being the embarrassing obvious noes that come to mind! Anyway, off to the Random llaunch thiing tonight - should be a fun night and apparently they are going to play Random 2 afterwards, as its now expected to be finished! Andy McHaffie Gary's apparently bringing some copies of Exile (dunno why) - I wonder if my friend, who has a press pass can blag a copy for me ! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 1997 23:47:53 -0800 From: zigi@teleport.com (Pythoness) Subject: Music to Strip To To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) > I was watching a cable channel the other night and they had on a stripper >who was wearing loads of black leather and other assorted items. When asked >what music she liked dancing too she replied "Oh i love dancing to GARY >NUMAN". So there you have it. If you ever feel the urge to strip off,Numans >music is the only choice. Er, well--I did my part to promote Numan in a new context a few years ago when I did a (classical and very tasteful and fully clothed) bellydance to "Creatures" (the long version) in an erotica performance in a local women's club. :-) It went over very well. I am now obliged to explain that bellydance is NOT to be considered in the same class with stripping and other explicit dance-forms, and many performers of "danse orientale" will tell you firmly that it *is not erotic* and wouldn't (and didn't) approve of my dancing at that show at all. I don't happen to agree with the last statement, but I will underscore that bellydance is *not* what you'll see in a strip-joint. (And you probably won't see anyone dancing to Gary Numan in a Greek restaurant either. More's the pity.) zg Ziggy's House O' Vermin zigi@teleport.com --------------------------- Our first father, Abraham, whose bosom is the unique soul of the humans, was certainly as bewildered as we are, if not infinitely more so... --R. Williamson ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 00:00:24 +0000 From: Michael & BethAnn Damrath Subject: Numan vs. Zappa To: Gary Numan After reading the reply to the Numan vs. Neil Young analogy (which I had to agree was a bit far-fetched), I decided to impart on you all a long considered analogy of my own. I have always considered that there were quite a few parallels between the careers and talents of Gary Numan and the late Frank Zappa. Both Numan and Zappa have had very little of what you would consider traditional 'success'. Zappa had one major hit song-'Valley Girl' (albeit late in his career rather than early as in Gary's 'Cars'). Zappa has been described as a musical genius by a select group of followers that includes a large, cult fan base not unlike Numan's. Zappa was also championed by his peer musicians much in the same way that Gary now appears to be. Like Gary has, Frank changed musical styles at will. He also pioneered several methods and styles, as Gary pioneered the use of the synthesiser in pop music. Frank Zappa was one of the first musicians to make extensive use of multiple tracks and tape loops (pre-dating other more popular users like the Beatles), and was one of the first artists to use the synclavier computer in a full legnth studio recording. Frank, like Gary's 'Numa Records', also found it neccessary to found his own label-'Barking Pumpkin', to keep his music alive. Time is showing that Gary Numan's talents and genius are more widely recognized than any published critic has had the balls to report. Frank Zappa had to struggle a very long time before being given the respect he deserved. Perhaps not really till after his death. We can only hope that Gary won't have to wait quite as long. I hope this wasn't too far-fetched for the rest of you. However it sounds a little strange coming from a > newspaper known to many as The Daily Torygraph. It just illustrates how > much this aspect of Gary's persona has damaged him, ridiculous as it may > seem to anybody who gives it a moments thought. Iam not so sure. We should all know by now politics/religion and music rarely mix well. Unless of course that is your intention from the outset. I think the press are fair to remind us Gary was a right wing fascist pig. Its one thing to hold personal beliefs but to appear on Tv openly supporting a political party whose ideals were based on pure greed is another. I for one will never forget his smug attitude, and totally understand the media reaction. Incidentally the more knowledge I acquired about Gary the more I began to dislike his personality, put simply in my opinion he is an arrogant greedy and ungrateful bstard. Having said all that there WAZ a golden moment before he became corrupt with greed. That was Garys innocence and he produced his best albums and singles around that time. SHAME on BB for publicating frases like "... If anything, RANDOM is a "tribute" to the participating artists ... " or "...not a Gary Numan 'tribute' album (which would possibly limit the sales) ..." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never realized such a campain against the artist which is the main theme of the product to be promoted ! Better (I) say nothing more ... I really hope that Gary will never be in an contract with this company !!! They never promoted him well. In reality they never deserved the money made with Gary!!! The other thing is that it looks like that BB has as always again pressed to few CDs. Sorry, but I don't believe that the problem of getting RANDOM is because it has sold out. Here in germany all CD discounter have told me that RANDOM is expected at monday (9.6), but that it do not appear. I think in germany ROUGH TRADE (which is distributor for it here) has nothing to spread over germany. I would be glad if I am wrong but this can be the fact and be another bad thing on RANDOM or BB. Something positiv. I found a web site: http://www.trouserpress.com which contents on rock/pop music of the 70/80/90s. The really exciting is that there is a picture of Gary at the starting page (check out on the right side) of that picture AND there is another one on the N bands site (check out the left side). There is also a discussion area for each band, so also for Gary. So let us show the people the interest in Gary by sending some items to it !!! Bye, Markus from Nuremberg/Germany P.S.: Hope to get RANDOM tomorrow ... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 12:37:33 +0000 From: "E.Stein" Subject: random thoughts To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Here's my opinion on the random album. On the whole I think it is excellent, and am delighted to see that most bands have chosen to reinterprit rather than reproduce. I am even happier to see that most Numan fans think this is the right way to go about it. I can think of nothing worse than a double CD of inferior Numan soundalikes. Best; An Pierle - AFE (very clever I thought. More than made up for Tori Amos' absence) Jimi Tenor - DITP Amanda Ghost - Absolution St. Ettiene - Stormtrooper in drag (Best choice for a single I think) Bis - We are so fragile (Numan goes Ska) Worst; Dave Clarke - Cars (very uninteresting mix) Orb - Jo the waiter (as I feared) Republica - AFE (Simply very dissapointing, a bit plain) Was anyone else from the digest at the Tower records signing yesterday? A resounding success I thought. However, I was a little dissapointed that Gary didn't know who Billy Mackenzie was (for those who don't know, Billy was the singer with eighties band the Associates and tragically comitted suicide in January). I asked Gary whether he had any thoughts on his suicide. He replied, "who?" Oh well. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
