I have been a fan since 1979 when I first > heard "We are so Fragile" on a Duke box in a pool hall when I was in > College. My favourite Albums were "The Pleasure Principle" & > "Telekon" which I played each day when home from Work for about 4 > hours at a time week after week. The only great Album since was > Berserker. I bought tickets to the farwell gig at Wembely but didnt > have the courage to go. and gave the tickets away to a Numanfan I found > in the Fan club magazine. Some years later I went to Hammersmith in > typical Berserker style a few years late, but went anyway. > > I have some Questions. > > Q1. Years ago Gary suggested doing an EP for the Fans. This never > happened, however would he consider doing an EP now even if it was > for general release, the theme of the EP being Love songs, Such as > "This is new Love", "Love needs no Disguise", "You walk in my > Soul" (and the other few, the names of which escape me) ? A little sad to read that you only think I've made one great album > since 1980, I'm a little surprised that you still consider > yourself a fan. I do not need to like what 'you' are currently into to be a fan, I am a fan of the music and the image of the original Gary Numan Telekon and TPP which I thought I had made very obvious. Im surprised at the "you still call yourself a fan" comment just because Elvis is no longer making albums for people to like doesn't exclude them from being fans, I was a fan of the image and the music of Numan when it was what I liked. > Also, I don't mean to be rude but, I find your comments about the > music on 'You Walk In My Soul', how can I put this, lacking in > understanding. 'You Walk In My Soul' is not a sad song, it is not > about being lonely, Well that's the cord it hits in me, music is to me personal interpretation and lonely and sad is mine. > You may think that you could have produced it better, and you could > well be right, but I can assure you that, in it's current form, it is > not 'completely wrong'. I am only expressing my opinion on the music, there is no right or wrong here, you like the music you put to it I do not. I liked a lot of your older music different people like different music and even that changes with time. Anyway all I made was a comment for a way to do a better version of it, the original isn't always the best, Garys release of "On Broadway" is a fine example of that, the first release while not completely wrong can often be improved upon! > I was also a little disappointed to see that you didn't know the > names of more than 3 of my love songs. I do not go in for knowing names of songs I like to listen to them and enjoy the mood, I do not think knowing the names off by heart is a crucial part of the enjoyment of the song. When I got Telekon I played it 4 hours a day every day for weeks that I think speaks more about my enjoyment of the music much more that sitting down reading and learning the record sleeve. > In fact one of those, 'Love Needs No Disguise' isn't a Numan song at > all and the second, > 'This Is New Love', isn't actually a ballad (or love song). I know Love needs no disguise is a Dramatics song but it was fantastic as was This is new love as was Child with a Ghost.I was only expressing an opinion as to what I would like to see on an EP if one was ever produced, which was the core of my question, ie how about a fan theme EP ? That I say 'you' had no great album since Berserker should not be seen as a personal attack, I just prefer the old style of electronic music, its what hooked me in the first place and probably a lot of fans, I am sure the die hard among the fan base will disagree with me, but my tastes are mine, I like your keyboard synth based music, when it comes to Guitar I prefer the Cure, Nirvana and Radioheads styles. As an Icon Gary Numan was a great one and influenced a lot of Fans including me, the music changes and I cant be expected to like everything. Best Regards Dominic. ---------- > Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 22:20:51 -0700 From: Miss Marlene > > > >'You Walk In My Soul' is not a sad song, it is not about being lonely, > >it's theme is very positive and it sounds the way it does because > >that's what I wanted. > > I must also say that I am definately not one for love/slow songs...but > this song is simply beautiful (I have it framed)...why don't you listen > to the song again, paying attention to the lyrics this time...you > should find that it is indeed very positive... > > Marlene, I think the lyrics are among the best ever and couldn't agree more how beautiful they are, but the music I do not like I drowns and strangles the lyrics, what the song needs is soft melancholy music to give it the best possible surround, loud music hides the lyrics too much. The lyrics need to be the emphasis of the song and not the abrasive music. Why write great lyrics and drown them with really bad music ? But I can not agree that there is no sadness in the song, is there no sadness in love and beauty ? both are temporary and fleeting if at all and surely that is the greatest sadness there could be, tell someone who has lost love or never found it and have them listen to a song like this and ask them of sadness. My name's Arp and I'm rejoining the Numan digest after a long break. Last time I was here the list was full of Donald Pedder and his incredibly anal lists, forms, regulations and definitions. It was full of Americans asking if Gary was going to tour in America, when Gary was going to tour in American, and if he would visit Atlanta/New York/Akron/Fargo. Furthermore, it was full of people worried that the 'Numan Network' was a class-ist secretive masonic organisation devoted to secretive masonic things. And it had me on it as well. Since then I have bought an SH101, learned to play the Bass guitar, got a job, lost a job, had a tooth pulled out, and combed my hair. I have seen Gary in concert once (Southampton, supported by Cubanate), and I have got him to sign my copy of the 'Blue Album' (silver ink, all over the picture of him in the gatefold). He was on telly last week - on the Jack Doherty show he managed to be quite affable and amusing, which is more than can be said of Jack Doherty (the least funny man to have a house band). Later on, at some point, I will write an incredibly detailed and really rather brilliant review of Random. I don't care if there have been other reviews already - mine will be much, much better. If any of you find this post offensive, you are obviously hairy. Oh yes, I just finished Carmageddon. Nothing to do with Gary Numan, I just added that bit for extra texture and a certain degree of cultural grounding. As for politics, society will prevail... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 97 12:47:00 PDT From: Tina Freeman Subject: Nick Fox To: digest I originally felt anger at the way Nick treated Gary now i only feel pity , for someone who obviously hates Gary so much ( as expressed on this site and others ) why does he bother to read the numan network let alone write to the digest ? I can only think of two reasons 1) He is a trouble maker who likes to wind people up or 2) He is a sad bastard who has no friends in the world to play with and who's only touch with other human beings is through the internet. I favour the last reason personally. My advice to all readers ( including you Joey ) is to just ignore him with any luck he will just go away like a good little boy, better still could we not exclude him from the digest after all it is supposed to be for constructive criticism only. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 08:05:21 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: Politics / A GOOD RANDOM REVIEW !!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu OK, I'm bowing out of the political crap - its too easy for it to take over..do what Joey and I did and use private mail... Secondly - Gary Numan and Random in favourable comments in the British music press shocker !!! - Its true. Taylor Parkes reviewed Random and gave it a pretty good write up, also mentioning that its about time Gary was re-evaluated.. So it might be a good idea to keep this journalists name in mind if gary wants to get a decent interview around the time of Exile.. Andy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 15:28:07 +0000 From: "Craig Land" Subject: Random To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi there Numanoids, Well I have just read my first copy of the Numan list, initially I will have to be honest, it is not as good as the Kraftwerk mailing list I also belong to, but that's because there's far too much talk on politics! Didn't you ever learn that politics and religion are the main causes of war and tribulation in the history of us mortal men?! I joined the list to hear about Numan's music and the general scene surrounding him, so come on more talk on this please. I forgot to mention in my first posting that you can all e:mail me privately if you so wish (cland@acl.memec.com) to let me know if you are interested in attending a Electronica Disco which I am trying to arrange. It will be in Milton Keynes, England. I have already seen a posting from someone in Oxford who I presume will want to come and I know of others on the Kraftwerk list who will attend, so let me have your comments. On a side issue, as a long time Numan fan I have seen his music develop right through all his styles, perhaps the list members would like to post their current music tastes as well as Numan so that we can see if there are any patterns in the way we have changed in our music tastes. Personally, I have always preferred Synth based instrumentals, one of my favorite Numan tracks was the version on the b-side to Down In The Park (12 inch copy only), of I Nearly Married A Human 2. Now, I am still into heavy Synth stuff, but tend to like the House 'n' Garage scene, strictly underground US stuff. Also the harder side from Detroit and Chicago is great, in particular record labels like Cajual and Relief. I know that other Numan fans I have spoken to at concerts almost hate me for my current music tastes and can't beleive the way I have gone! What do you think? Please do not forget, if you live in San Diego, contact me 'cause I will be out there this year. Best Regards, Craig. Here goes; Frank Zappa 1) As we (probably) all know Zappa worked with Captain Beefheart on their "Bongo fury" album. 2) Drummer, Robert Williams was part of Beefheart's magic band for the "Shiny beast" and "Doc at the radar station" albums. 3) Robert Williams collaborated with the ex-Stranglers' vocalist, Hugh Cornwell, on their 1979 "Nosferatu" album. 4) Making a guest appearance on that album are Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh from Devo (Mark wrote and sung on one of the tracks, a little known Devo fact). 5) Mark Mothersbaugh contributed a track to the Residents' Ralph records compilation, "Potatoes-a collection of folk songs" in 1987. 6) One of Ralph records' signings in the mid-eighties was none other than Nash the Slash, who released at least one l.p. on the label. 7) Nash played on Numan's "Dance" album, and toured with him in 1980/81. Et voila! Gary Numan. There are actually a number of other ways of doing it, but I think this is the shortest.
