I stopped collecting around the Berserker period but remain loyal to the earlier output. I have come to fall in love with other forms of electronic music and have re-discovered the electric guitar in my musical journeys. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 23:38:11 -0700 From: "D.G" Subject: E-Cards To Gary & Gemma To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In response to Riana V.S.N's recent post ,concerning sending e-cards to Gary and Gemma , congradulating them regarding thier impending nuptials , I second the motion . However , I feel that it might work better , if we send one document with the names and sentiments of Numan-Digest members . We could do this this much the same way as was done with the Digests birthday and Chritmas wishes for Gary . This way we avoid inconvieniencing Gary & Co. with an artery clogging mail-bomb . I've been down under for two weeks doing the job-hunt thing (I've just received a permanent resident visa for Aussie) and am flying back to San Francisco tomorrow. This morning I was getting ready for a day of grueling interviews, and listening to "Triple-J" - the alternative national radio station. I was psyched to hear "We Have a Technical" from the Random CD being played. After the song, the female DJ came on and plugged the album, saying it was "brilliant" and that everyone, Numan fan or not, should check it out. Cool. - David ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jul 1997 22:20:01 -0300 From: "Alexandre Twin" Subject: license to a compilation To: "numan" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_01BC9624.3B4507A0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello!!! MP3 sites are starting to get lots of attention from their illegal activity and are disappearing fast. Good luck with your Numan bot and your solitary track. What about "Now I remember him. What ever happened to him?" This is after trying to explain who he is for about 10 minutes. Usually the 'remember back to the skating rink?' gets them every time. A friend of mine who grew up in the U.K. didn't even remember 'Cars'. I even tried to 'da da da da, da da' the song out to him. No use. Also, for people that don't remember him or know anything more about him than 'Cars', I can play something by Gary and I have yet to have someone say "I don't like that!" Of course I try to play something I think they'll like. You don't start the average non-fan out on 'Cry, The Clock Said'. My wife loves the 'Automatic' and 'Metal Rhythm' albums, but not the 'Sacrifice' album. She said most of the tracks sound the same to her. They do, but not being a fan makes it too repetitive for her. Tamara, I think this is great subject and hope you get a lot more replies. The digest was a little weak last time. It is summer though, must be a few folks on vacation. Ralph Milam ralphm@mindspring.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 1997 08:38:38 -0600 From: Scott Lucado Subject: Random Thoughts To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Okay, so I went online to CD-NOW and saw that Random was on sale for $13.50 or whatever, and I thought what the heck, since I can't walk for a while longer I won't be going to any music stores anyway, so I ordered it and a few days later it arrived, and as my wife left for work I put it in the CD-ROM drive of my computer and let it play while I was trading Instant Messages with some of my teenage buddies on America On Line. Given that context, my overall reaction to "Random" is this: It reflects not so much on Gary's talent as a songwriter as it does on the pathetic state of the bands currently recording music. I must be getting old, because with one or two exceptions, the tracks on this CD do not seem in any way to offer anything that makes me see an old Numan song in a new way. The worst offender must be The Orb, who should be rounded up and summarily shot for that lame butchering masquerading as "Jo the Waiter." I mean--is "ambient" a polite word for "unimaginative and boring?" If this is typical of what they are recording these days, they should be shot anyway. It forces me to realize how truly sad it is that Gary isn't more popular; the worse the current bands get, the better he sounds. I never thought he was the most talented recording artist on the planet, but the most common criticisms of his work--repetitive, lacking in originality, self-indulgent--pale in comparison to the weaknesses of the "performances" on this CD. I for one can't wait for the next New Wave. And thank god the CD was cheap. Brief comments on other topics: 1) Leave religion out of this digest, please. The world hasn't been able to come to agreeable terms on religion in 10,000 years. A bunch of Gary Numan fans, brilliant though we may be, aren't going to solve this problem. 2) A fan is a fan is a fan. I myself wish that Gary would once again do something half as creative and revolutionary as "The Pleasure Principle," but I know that he won't, and it's okay. He grinds out an occasional CD, and I buy it, and that's good enough for me. Scott scott_lucado@amrcorp.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 1997 11:15:13 -0800 From: Alyssa Jaraba Subject: Tolerance and peace To: Gary Numan Hmmm...did I miss something? Apparently somebody out there sees some sort of flaming of Gary's views on religion by those of us who profess a faith in God, which I seem to have overlooked in my readings on the digest. However, since I often catch my pastor cranking up the Beatles Anthology in his office with no remorse, I can hardly assume that there is anything wrong with liking music, no matter what the message. I find Gary's lyrics to be honest, thoughtful, and haunting in regards to his religious view, and find that they arouse in me some valid questions, making me more interested in digging into my beliefs and seeing if I really have reason to personally disagree with him on any point. As far as Gary's tolerance, I can only state that Gary himelf was kind enough to tour my entire site (he even checked my HTML for me) and personally emailed me mentioning that he had noticed that I was a Christian from my personal page, and thanking me for my tolerance of his views. Perhaps he has sadly had experience with Christians who feel that the path to enlightenment must be shoved down everybody else's throats without regard to the individual's personal right to believe whatever they choose to believe. If so, I am glad that he has the open-mindedness to recognize that most of us who hold to a faith view are not so arrogant. I have to just make a quick reply to JDavis: hmmmm...perhaps I'm going on and on, but so be it. As for Gary being gay, I'm sure it would come as a shock to his fiancee, Gemma. Also, since he has stated that he is not gay but certainly doesn't seem like the sort who would back down from claiming to be so if he actually were, I think we can trust his word. And would it make me stop listening to him if he were? Doubt it. I personally wouldn't care, since I don't find sexual orientation to be some kind of measuring stick of a person's worth as a human or as a performer. This may come as a shock, but most Christians regard the only measure of a person's worth as a human to be the fact that they are...human. Wow. So, rather than assuming that we are on a high horse, perhaps you could show more tolerance of the expressions of those who are open-minded enough to truly listen to an artist whose personal and lyrical views are vastly different to their own, and perhaps even understand the fact that such an act involves by it's nature a questioning of both sides. Since you state that you agree with Gary's views most of the time, perhaps you have not had the deep and growing experience of exploring music and literature that disagrees with you. Try it sometime. It may lead to a more enlightened view of what the discussion has been about. Peace, Cheers, and Laterz, Lyssa -- Tearin it up..I'm living on empty...
