I second the vote for us digester's to group together as one and send Gary and Gemma a card, as well as for Tony and Beryl, who'll probably be organising the whole wedding, like they don't have enough to do already.... In either case, put me on the list for the card!!!..now, if we only knew what they wanted for a present.....besides a great record contract, that is.....:) Dave ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 1997 05:41:01 -0400 (EDT) From: SomaCrow@aol.com Subject: Further Discussion of Cards To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Fred's thought of one huge e-card to avoid "an artery clogging mail-bomb" is pragmatic; however, the GNFC mailbox has already gotten large numbers of cards and has been able to handle them all - some wing their way to Gary's very desk. Now according to Shakespeare's Brutus, ambition merits slaying, so I must be modest and say that I really don't think the number of cards which will be sent as a result of my campaigning will cause the GNFC P.O. box to explode. :-) Besides, it's much more personal to send a card, and it shows that one cares enough to go find a cool card, indite a message, and send it. :-) Myself, were I in his position, I'd love to see a flood of cards come to me. I'd keep the coolest ones in my house and store the others elsewhere. A wedding is presumably not something Gary's gonna experience too often, so I say let's celebrate it! Kill A Tree For Gary! :-) Hope I've agitated convincingly, 'cause I'd hate to see my efforts fall flat. ::Bambi eyes:: Riana "There are millions of cockroaches in the world! I post it here because what's happening to Manson could happen to Numan, given the provacative nature of the lyrics in the upcoming "Exile" album. Let's hope the UK is a tad more progressive than we are here in Calgary. Oh, and since Marilyn once covered a Numan song, there's another reason it's on topic. :-) Seriously, if this bores ya, skip to the next message. Anyhoo: I'm told this story has come up in SPIN magazine and so you may have heard about it already. Here's the story in detail. A few months ago, Marilyn Manson booked to play the Max Bell Arena here in Calgary. The Max Bell Arena is run by the Max Bell Society, which in turn is currently controlled by a local businessman named Larry Ryckman. Ryckman's an interesting character.... * He and his company, Archer Communications, brought us Q-Sound. Remember Q-Sound? Remember how it was going to revolutionize the recording industry? Remember how much of a *BATH* most people took on this? Ryckman took that money and ran. * One of the things he did with that money is buy the Calgary Stampeders football team. He hired an expensive American quarterback, Doug Flutie, as the team's star player. Doug's playing elsewhere now and is *STILL* looking to get paid for his time here. * Ryckman was, a year or so ago, convicted of manipulating stock prices on the Alberta Stock Exchange and fined so much money that he went into bankruptcy. Anyways, now you know what kind of sleazebag this guy is. So.... he books Marilyn Manson, apparently unaware of the controversial nature of the show. As the date of the show got closer, some church groups and one prominent city alderman began protesting the show, saying that acts like Manson should be banned. So Ryckman, who never met a camera he didn't like, stepped in and decided to be the saviour of all that is moral and pure. He pulled the plug on the concert. Tore up the contract and said "sorry guys, we've changed our minds." The reaction in our local right-wing paper was extremely positive, which disgusted me as I usually agree with 'em on most issues. But in the meantime, the promoters were crying that this was a violation of a legal contract, and they went to court to get an injunction forcing the Max Bell to honour its contract. The judge said no - a decision that astonished me. The show is cancelled - *BUT* the case will now be heard as a civil proceeding. This meant that Ryckman and his sleazy friends had to come up with $35,000 as a bond (in case he lost the civil proceeding, which seems virtually guaranteed) within 10 days or else the injunction *WOULD* be granted after all. He couldn't raise the money on his own but persuaded several church groups to cough up the money... money that they'll surely never see again. He showed up at the courtroom with three cheques, one of which was in the amount of $32,000. This cheque was rushed from the courtroom to the banks by the promoters. And it bounced. The promoters cried victory and announced the show was back ON again. But the next day, Ryckman was back in court with a new cheque and claiming it was the bank that screwed up. The judge bought it, accepted the check, ruled that Ryckman had complied with the court order (despite being a day late), and now the show is *OFF* again. Apparently for good, as there are no suitable venues available at this late date. In the meantime, about 190 miles up the highway in Edmonton, sales for THEIR Manson show have tripled since the cancellation was first announced. One company is hiring a tour bus to take Calgary Manson fans north for the show and return 'em the same evening. Now here's the part where I'd like you to do a bit of thinking.... y'see, I'm a regular newspaper reader and I follow the news. This type of thing rears its ugly ahead from time to time - anyone remember the brouhaha they raised over Alice Cooper, or Kiss, or Black Sabbath? Yet every time I read one of those stories, I'd just chuckle to myself and think that this could *NEVER* happen here, it only happens in backwards places that wouldn't know what civilization is if it bit them on the ass. But now it *HAS* happened here. In Calgary, a cosmopolitan little burg that once dazzled the world when it hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. I'm shocked, I'm amazed, I'm dumbfounded.... there aren't adjectives enough to describe how I feel about this. It sure was a dose of reality for me. Even in 1997, one narrow-minded little prick has the power to tell me what I can and cannot see. It can happen to you, too, no matter where you live. Don't doubt it. And, I'm afraid, it very possibly could happen to Gary too, if word gets out about the nature of his new album. /--------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 (403) 606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@ab.imag.net lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEB: http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/ / / He who laughs last uses OS/2. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 1997 19:06:10 -0700 From: thirty5gramclub@webtv.net (Jef Encinas) Subject: ME! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu >Okay, so I went online to CD-NOW and saw that Random was on sale for $13.50 >or whatever, and I thought what the heck, since I can't walk for a while >Given that context, my overall reaction to "Random" is this: It reflects >not so much on Gary's talent as a songwriter as it does on the pathetic >state of the bands currently recording music. I must be getting old, >because with one or two exceptions, the tracks on this CD do not seem in >any way to offer anything that makes me see an old Numan song in a new way. A strange thing happened here. I picked it up a few weeks at the local Music store, and have been playing it for a while now (I have been saving my opinions until I was sure of how I felt). While I must agree about half the work is not really that great, some I have been able to get local airplay going on. On my show I have played at least 4-5 tracks a day, just to get it out. With the local 'ROCK' station I have gotten them to start playing 'Poetry and Power' during their all request lunch, and Screamer's at Six show. Lately I have been hearing more of it played during the normal play lists and they have been talking the CD up a bit when people ask what its on. Also our local 'NEW ROCK' station picked up'We have a Technical' and 'I'm and Agent'. The local college station plays a lot now (I gave them a free disk), but play JIMI's 'Down in the Park' the most. Even our local 'DANCE' station got some EMAIL and CD waves from me as teasers and I notice that 'Stormtrooper in Drag' is played several times a day (One of my fav's). Reason all this back-patting is going on is when I was in the store last night I was talking with the owner, and he told me that he has sold over 500 copies of the CD in the last two weeks, and cannot keep them stocked. Now if all of you start EMAILing your local stations for songs that fit their format, you might be able to get the ball rolling in your town also. >The worst offender must be The Orb, who should be rounded up and summarily >shot for that lame butchering masquerading as "Jo the Waiter." I mean--is >"ambient" a polite word for "unimaginative and boring?" If this is typical >of what they are recording these days, they should be shot anyway. I suppose that their OPINION of the song ranks about the same as your OPINION of the song. The only difference is that theirs is on a CD and they are making money. That to me seems to be the crux of the whole thing. People have been quick to point out what they don't like in the CD, yet the point is they have done TRIBUTE in their way to Gary. You don't have to like it, but you do have to apreaceate it. I myself don't like all of Gary's songs (GASP!) but I do listen to them. Same with the songs on Random. I don't like them all, but I listen to them (at least once ). >It forces me to realize how truly sad it is that Gary isn't more popular; >the worse the current bands get, the better he sounds. I never thought he >was the most talented recording artist on the planet, but the most common >criticisms of his work--repetitive, lacking in originality, self-indulgent- >-pale in comparison to the weaknesses of the "performances" on this CD. How true, but it could have been worse. The Spice Girls or Hansen could have been secret Numan fans and been on the CD. A few side notes: Who the hell designed the cover for the CD? What a terrible job! Cant read it, cant read the liner notes, and Nothing on the cover but the stupid N. I must agree with everyone else who complained, the person tho designed that should be shot. No wonder the sales are down, no-one knows what it is! I must also agree that EVERYTHING about Gary is fair game. Since he writes about Religion and Politics, we should be able to comment on his views. I myself don't understand the English difference's in their parties, but then again I could care less. We have a screwed up system here, so we cant really comment on it much. At least you don't have a leader that dosn't have a legal fund for when he gets out of office. Well, enjoy RANDOM, and think of how nice it will be when EXILE finally comes out. Mike One must put up barriers To keep oneself intact. - Rush, 1981 "It took me a long time to grow up. I didn't.... To D.G. - what Riana was proposing was not e-cards, but ACTUAL cards. The ones you go out to the store and buy, then sign and mail. Go to her "Scary Numan" site and check out all the details (including mailing address). Your idea of a best-wishes email message signed by all of us is not a bad one at all - anyone wanna organize it? :-) Ralph Milam - your comment that your wife found Sacrifice to be a bit repetitive brings to mind my first day with that album. I too found it a tad repetitive (and still do - but I've ragged on that subject enough, thankyouverymuch), but my room-mate Blaine summed it up pretty well. I put the disc into the player and started listening to it. He sat with me and listened to the opening of "Pray", which we both agreed was pretty cool. *BUT*, he had lots of stuff to do that day and kept popping out of the living room, then back in for a few seconds, then back out, in, out, in, out, etc. Nearly 40 minutes later I'm halfway thru "Magic" and he wanders back in, stops.... pauses.... and says "isn't this song over *YET*?" All I could do was smile.... Alyssa Jaraba - regarding tolerance, I agree with you completely. I consider myself to be a Christian. I love God, I believe in God, and my faith in Him is pretty complete. People have asked me how I can listen to Gary's recent output. The answer I give is this: nowhere (on the Sacrifice album or the Absolution single) does Gary preach to me that God doesn't exist. Indeed, the feel I get is that he is a man with many questions (this comes through in his interviews on the subject as well), and I have *NO* problem with a man who, to borrow a phrase, questions his faith or indeed questions *MY* faith. Gary says he doesn't believe in God, but I think deep down Gary is a man who *WANTS* more than anything to believe in God (or something higher than himself) but simply hasn't found a way to do so that he can reconcile with what he sees in the world around him. And that's fine. This does *NOT* make him an evil man in any way, shape, or form - and even if I were to go so far as to say he *WAS* a sinner over this, the Bible tells us to hate the sin but *LOVE* the sinner. It's true, however, that I have difficulty singing along to my bootleg recording of Prophecy.... "the body of Christ is as black as his soul" is a tad disturbing, but I chalk that one up to "shock value" and leave it there. I know I don't believe that, and I know God knows I don't believe it either. And that's all that matters. :-) There are some out there who are quite put out by Gary's beliefs. I ask you to consider the way many fundamentalist Muslim countries view us (ie: the Western world and America in particular). To them, we are evil. We are evil because we are decadent and because we do not believe as they do. This is morally repugnant, I think most of you would agree. So why do EXACTLY THE SAME THING to Gary Numan? As to his sexual orientation, again I'm on your side (and I know that'll shock a few people here since I've been quite vociferous about my conservative beliefs). His choice isn't mine to make for him. It's his. And even if he were gay... and even if I do believe he's a sinner because of it (I don't).... again, hate the sin but love the sinner. You put it quite well when you said that one's sexual orientation is hardly an appropriate yardstick to measure somebody by. If so, then we're all in a lot of trouble because some truly great people have been homosexual... ie: Leonardo Da Vinci. Their sexual orientation is a matter between themselves, their partners, their families, and (if they believe) their God. I don't enter into the picture, nor do you or anybody else here. /--------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 (403) 606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@ab.imag.net lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEB: http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/ / / "I have already known fear.
