CARD FOR GARY AND GEMMA Someone else will have to do this as I certainly don't have time. PERSONAL NEWS The countdown to the new arrival in the Langsford family is down to less than 7 weeks remaining. We are cimpletely unprepared and haven't even decided on a name yet. At the moment we we are trying to prevent him from making an early appearance - my wife is on bedrest. Surely it was Frank Capra who made 'It's A Wonderful Life'. Then again, Franz Kafka did write about a VERY BIG cockroach. I am trying not to talk about religion but it's so hard. At least Joey Lindstrom gave me a good excuse. For the sake of clarity: 1.Gary does not believe in God - I know, I've asked him, and recently. 2.Gary does not want to believe in God. = I'm afraid your dogma leads you to a rather insulting conclusion, i.e. atheists really DO want to believe in something higher than themselves. O= n the contrary, many true atheists (and not the agnostics who think they ar= e atheists) tend to be more than happy with the knowledge that the human brain and evolution are all we have. = As a very wise scientist commented: "People say 'isn't your life empty (without God)?'. Well no - I'm looking forward to a good lunch." "Don't pray for my soul" - Gary didn't mean you didn't have to. He meant = he didn't want you to - the idea is really quite repulsive. I wasn't certain of how to interpret this (I was so surprised, I may even have misheard it). There were 5000 of the blue album (first pressing), and very many more subsequently. I'd guess there were only a few thousand pressed of 'bombers' etc (apart from the subsequent re-pressed double pack etc). So how many of Absolution were sold? Less than 5000? Worldwide? This seems amazing given that i) it's a very good song - one of his best? ii) it followed the 'success' of Sacrifice around the time 'Exile' began to be anticipated (all those years ago!) iii) there were few other Numan-related relases around that time that may have impacted upon sales. Gary mentioned this because he was explaining why there was no intention of releasing a single from Exile - single sales were *that* poor - and that not even his fans supported him in buying the singles. Does this surprise/shock anyone else, or just me? Hi, my name is Peeters Joeri, I'm 27 years old, and I live in Belgium, a small country in Europe. I got interested in Numan when I was 13. There are about 15 REAL numan- fans here in Belgium, and every year we go to the last concert of the tour at Hammersmith Appolo in London.(sometimes the last two) It was a real surprise to see him a few years ago in Brussels (capital of Belgium), as you know it's a while since he toured abroad. For the last years the intrest in Numan went downwards here in Belgium so it's getting more and more difficult to buy his records. When I go to London I always go to a shop specialized in Numan and Depeche Mode records. I play music myself, owning a Korg Prophecy and Roland XP-80, the sound is a bit like Numan but still different( a combination of all his different styles). If you have any questions or you want to contact me, you can always write at this adress: joeri@planetinternet.be ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 1997 12:06:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Numan11@aol.com Subject: Hello again To: numan@cs.uwp.edu My name is Jim Costa and have been a Numan fan since the begining. My mucical interests are extremely varied (Numan, Devo, Boingo, Primus,Tull) as well as jazz, classical etc. I play the drums and I'm kicking the idea of taking up the guitar as well. I know this is my intro but I just have to comment on something I read in #349 about Random. Let us not forget who we are here to discuss. Gary was and is not exactly traveling down the beaten path musically so it amazes me to hear someone tearing these groups down. Granted, the music is different but I thought that was the point. I would have been highly pissed if The Orb or any other group on the CD tried to duplicate Numan's style. The whole point is to show how Numan influenced them not how well they can mimic Gary. If you are still uptight about it here's a happy thought, be grateful you didn't pay $35 for it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 1997 02:56:45 -0400 From: brezniakdavid@webtv.net (David Brezniak) Subject: Manson bannings To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Although not a 'Numan' subject, Joey Lindstrom did bring up a rather interesting topic. I recently saw the same type of censorship happen here in the good ol' USA....yes, although Mr. Manson was not banned from doing the show, there were a TON of religious parties standing outside the venue, and they were handing out little flyers, and just about giving communion on the sidewalks. I do feel that Gary, however, would not have such a strong impact, as his show is much less graphic, violent, sexual...and he does have many previous songs that are nothing about religion. (and he would never pull his pants down in front of an audience)...so I do feel the reactions by the public would be much less severe for Gary, thankfully:-) My Best, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 18:39:35 -0700 From: thirty5gramclub@webtv.net (Jef Encinas) Subject: ME! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello again As Joey said in support of me (thank you Joey!), I am indeed referring to *real life* cards, not e-mail messages. I think we've all gotten a bit too addicted to our e-mail here.... :-) But that's not the point. The point is, I really hope a lot of you will take a moment of your time and a bit of your money to send a card to Gary and Gemma. I think it will be a great gesture to make to the happy couple (yes, Alyssa, I know what gesture you'd *LIKE* to make at Gemma, grin!)... as Martin Purvis said, it's "sweet, kind, and generous" of me, and "completely out of character." :-) Whatever. Please patronize me and humor me just this once, okay? Remember, American Numanoids... it's gonna be me who will pay your Social Security. }:) Kill A Tree For Gary Riana "I could be the walrus, but it wouldn't change the fact that I don't have a car." - badly quoted Ferris Bueller's Day Off ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jul 1997 23:33:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Derek Langsford Subject: US release of "Sacrifice" To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Here's some more facts about the Sirius Comics release of "Sacrifice". I'm glad to see this album may reach a whole new audience in the USA and am proud to have played some small part in making it happen. Rob Moran of Sirius gave me these details: Transmit Discs, a sister company to Sirius Entertainment (one of the Top 10 comic publishers in the USA), is releasing a new, American edition of the album SACRIFICE, re-titled DAWN. It will be packaged accordingly, with art and design featuring the character of DAWN, by Jospeh Michael Linsner. An advance single was prepared for the San Diego ComiCon International. The single featured MAGIC/YOU WALK IN MY SOUL and PLAY LIKE GOD and was printed in full color on the disc. All copies of the single not sold at the show are being used for promotional purposes. There was 1000 of them made. Plans call for a jewel case single to be relased to comic stores ONLY in mid-September. The album version of DAWN will be released to comic shops ONLY in November. Availability in record stores will begin in January. All plans are subject to change.
