Short, cool Numan interview on the Web When Was Warrington (WWW) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 23:38:01 +0300 (ISR) From: Alex Shaltiel Subject: Article in Israely Maariv paper. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello, A full two page story written by 'Tal Pery' suddenly appeared in the Israel daily newspaper 'Maariv', In the weekly 'culture' section, and an illustrated picture on the whole front cover, We were very surprised, as the last article in Israel I remember, was when Metal rhythm came out. The article includes a brief history for the 'gary who?' reader, and then goes on to current matters, most of them around the random album. seems 'random' was the main reason for this article to come about, it even got a bit of airplay. sadly, there was no mention of the websites, nor did they spell his name correctly. ---------- Alex Shaltiel, Israel. shalt@geodepth.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 22:34:15 +0200 From: Klaus Sauer Subject: Bad News :-( and RANDOM 3 To: "numan@cs.uwp.edu" Hello everybody, let me start with bad news: Unfortunately I have to postpone the first international NUMAN-CONVENTION in Germany until next year. It is definitely NOT cancelled, but the earlist possible date for it now seems to be late January and will definitely happen in spring 1998. We will probably be able to present a NUMAN-Cover-Band from England. I will announce the new date for the convention as soon as we know. I am really very sorry that it didn't quite work out for this year, especially since I have already invested considerable efforts in the organisation of the convention. On to better news. A while ago I suggested to the DIGEST to compile a tape or CD of NUMAN Coversongs by NUMAN fans. The preliminary title of the project is "RANDOM 3 - The internet mixes", because I couldn't think of a better title. I was surprised how positive your reaction to this idea were. Therefore I have decided to to start this Fan-Tribute-Album-Project. I've asked Gary via e-mail what he thinks about this idea, but until now I havn't received an answer yet (which is not too surprising considering his current activities - new record deal, album, book, marriage, tour etc.). But I'm not expecting any copywrite problems because we do not intent to make any profit with this album and we will give the approproate credits (composer, publisher etc.) on the cover. Furthermore we will state clearly that this is a fan project - from fans for fans and just for fun. So send your tapes, DAT's CD-R's or whatever to the following address: KLAUS SAUER, KIRCHSTR.10, 45699 HERTEN, GERMANY All participents will receive a free copy of the album, everybody else will get it at cost. So select your favourite numan track and start rockin'! The very latest about this project will be available on my Web-Site 'Machine & Soul' from the 1st of September: http://www.herten.netsurf.de/~klaus.sauer/MachSoul.htm One more thing ... Random 3 is not a particulary imaginative title and 'The Internet Mixes' is also not too cool because ALL fans will have a chance to participate. So if you've got any idea how this fan-project should be titled, please drop me a line. Oh, and a warm thank you to Joey, William, Jon and everybody else for their moral support regarding this project! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Aug 1996 08:39:02 +0100 From: "Nick" Subject: being boiled To: "Gary Numan" Hi > Anyway, to Nick Foxx, let me say I very much liked the quote you used > about educated people. Had to write that one down for future use! yeah it's a classic Dave :-) good luck with the Numan site. > Errrrrr Nick - maybe you shouldn't buy Exile eh? I can see you popping > it into a pan of boiling water after the first playing... why Mathew ? does it improve the sound quality ? Anyway on the subject of Random my only regret is Gary didn't collaborate with the other artists especially on the powerful tracks. That would have been rewarding for Gary/The Artists/Beggars Banquet/Numanoids and Me. Whatever Random is still a good comp and has something for everybody. My favorite has to be Underdog's version of Films - turn it full blast for maximum effect CU L8R nICK fOX ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 20:54:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Derek Langsford Subject: comments and answers from the last Digest To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In Thursday's Digest SomaCrow@aol.com said: >twice a week, i creep stealthily to my computer in the middle of the night >(here's to pacific standard time) to see if my Digest has come yet. > obviously then, i enjoy it, i anticipate its arrival. and thus this moronic >note: it's really not necessary to reproduce an issue twice over again in the >Digest when back issues are put online within a decent period of time anyway. > end snipe. I hope that you realize those extraneous Digests were not intentional. Why on earth would someone purposely waste so much bandwidth? FYI, the Digest is automated. Dave Datta responds to requests to fix something if a glitch occurs. There's no one scanning each post that comes to the Digest. We usually only find out about a problem after the Digest gets distributed and when the cause of a problem is not obvious it usually takes another issue to see if the fix worked. In this case, the initial fix didn't. So we got more than one screwed-up Digest. I think if you understood how this Digest comes about each issue you'd appreciate how these glitches occur and also the fact that most of the time it is glitch-free. Like so many other things, it is the problems that are noted. Where else is there a regular, worldwide, interactive forum to discuss Gary Numan? OK, there's the IRC but that takes a bit more effort to take part in than the Digest. I must admit to being a tad annoyed by such criticism when this Digest runs glitch-free for the majority of the time, is produced purely voluntarily, and costs subscribers nothing. It has survived glitches before and will do so again. It looks like this latest one has been fixed already. >okie. <many of the websitemasters out here never get a "Thank-you.">> david, >thanks for complimenting my site (anyone else? j/k). i don't object to >thanks, mais non, but i do think miss marlene and co., me included, get >thanks enough through our counters and little notes of positive feedback we >get. hey, Absolution alone gets almost twenty hits a day. Nothing like being taken for granted, especially when praise is being heaped on others :-( >btw sean, plenty of us have heard manson's "ditp" rendition. i'm sure the >expression on my face the first time around was the standard one for numan >fans on their first exposure to it, but i like it actually, to a degree. for >better or for worse, it's very different from the original, unlike some of >random. i like numan's version far better though, duh. now let's take a >vote: who prefers jimi tenor to marilyn manson when it comes to "down in the >park"? (not i.) While I have not heard the Manson version, I find it strange why many berate the Jimi Tenor interpretation. It's one of my favourite Random tracks. No only do I think the playground effects are a clever twist on the lyrics, the way he totally changes the pace of the song while maintaining the clear hook is astounding IMO. ------------------------------ jean-guy lessire said: >I want to know all on gary... Jean-Guy - welcome to the Numan Digest. This is a twice weekly interactive forum where people can discuss things numanesque through email. Matthew Holbrook at Nuzone (http://www.nuzone.org.uk) in his news section says that the new label will want "Exile" released before the tour and may want to put out an emergency single. The album track contender is "Dominion Day" but apparently Gary already has 6 other songs that he was going to save for the next album and one of those is definitely single material. So, could there be two singles and would that mean some of the other non-album tracks being used as b-sides? This is pure speculation on my part. Certainly seems as if Gary is still being productive musically while "Exile" has been pending. It will be 3 years since "Sacrifice" was released come October. Quite a drought of new material for Numan fans, however we have had Sac Extended, Human plus the Babylon volumes (what happened to Babylon 8?), TechnoArmy (yes, I know), Premier Hits, reissue of Strange Charm, The Fury extended mixes and Random as well as those cheapo compilations from Receiver so it's not as if there's be a drought of releases. I am waiting for Random II - wasn't that supposed to be released a month or so after Random (I)? Found a UK copy of Random this week for $13.99 which will replace the US promo copy I received. Nice to have the full packaging. Has everyone noticed that the artists are listed on the back of the back insert, so while not visible without taking the insert out of the tray, should you break the irreplacable jewel case, you can still use the inserts to produce a decent looking set with a new conventional jewel case. Derek San Diego, California ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 19:09:56 +0100 From: Paul Denman Subject: Hello (been a long time...) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello All, faces old & Nu! Well, it's been a long time since I've posted a message to the Digest, or updated my web site, but I've managed to get my life in order & so I'm back surfing the web. Good to see Gary & Gemma tied the knot at long last... I'm afraid the double wedding didn't quite happen ;-) But enough about my personal problems... It's been an interesting few months to say the least, sorry if these topics are a bit dated, but here goes... Random! Mmmm Nice! This is a dream come true for me. There are very few tracks I don't like (She's Got Claws being one). I particularly love the St. Etienne cover of 'Stormtrooper in Drag' - a dancefloor classic now! Gravity Kills is also excellent, and is it true that Republica are to release 'AFE?' ? It's good to be able to play GN tracks to people without them realising it. The magazine articles & TV appearances have kept me busy (& skint) for the last few months... People have actually been coming up to me saying "I thought of you last night... Did you see..." etc.. etc.. Heh, heh, and they said he wouldn't last! Religion... Aah! That old favourite. I remember talking to Gary about his novel (which I hope will get finished one day) and he said that he thought of God as something that existed, created the world, mankind etc.. and then got bored, lost his/her powers and failed to outlive his/her creation. He also thought that if God was still alive, then he/she was an "evil f*ck". (His words, not mine). I have never been very religious; I prefer to believe in a pure power that did exist (and still may?) but that the meaning & direction has been manipulated and twisted by certain people throughout history for their own selfish means. Take for example the people who use religion as a stance to condemn homosexuality; they are just using it to back up their ignorance and phobias. Ever noticed how overtly-religious people quote the bible to defend their beliefs? Well I say to them... "And the good lord said 'Get thee behind me'" (Heh, Heh, heh!! ;-) I'm looking forward to 'Exile' and I hope that the new record deal means that a single will be released. All it needs is for every UK Numan fan to buy the single in every format during the first week, and surely he would hit the Top 40!? Oh, imagine, GN on Top of the Pops! How the DJs would love it ;-) Right, better get some work done now... By the way, I've landed a job as a Web Developer, so if you're into footy check out the site: http://www.teamtalk.com/ Cheers for now, Paul Denman (The Complex) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 22:25:50 -0400 From: ES3 Subject: Mista Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Howdy, My name is Edward Shimborske III, and I own and operate Sin Klub Entertainment, an independent record label based out of Ohio. We've got about 17 releases out now, are doing some work with a few bigger labels and have some good projects coming out for '98. Does Gary ever do any production or make cameos? We have an industria-metal band called The Thessalonian Dope Gods who are hoping to cover "Friends" on their next album. They have a great underground following, have already worked with Devo, Nitzer Ebb and The Jesus Lizard, and are recording some material for Re-Constriction to be released through MCA. I'd like to know if there is any way to involve Gary, as the band are greatly influenced by his earlier work. Next question: I also publish The Glass Eye, a monthly music newspaper found in Cleveland, Detroit, Toledo, Bowling Green and vicinity, and would love to do an interview with Mr. Numan. Is it possible. Thanks, I look forward to hearing from somebody. As I was perusing the July 25th edition of Entertainment Weekly the other day, I noticed an announcement. In fact it was the second item of the new singles portion of the Music section. The blurb announced the new single by the band Tia -- "Cars". Paraphrasing, it read something like "'90s band takes on Gary Numan's '80s new-wave classic and adds new lyrics and a funky backbeat courtesy of Sir-Mix-A-Lot (who also produces and provides a rap)." The rating given was a B-, I believe. I'm off to the shop to check it out. Has anyone heard this?
