I've listened to Numan off and on for years, but only recently got myself hooked on him. I'm into just about any kind of synth-oriented music that doesn't have the words "trachno-rave-trance-trip-hop-bass-jungle" or any of that other "stuff" . I do vocals and synth for the Synth-Pop-Industrial kinda band "bang"(I acually PLAY my keyboards too, you know like a MUSICIAN) ...and as you can see, I'm a bit opinionated. :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Aug 1997 16:21:37 +1000 From: Bart Tieman Subject: New Member To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Hello my name is Bart and I live in Launceston in Australia and I would probably be one of the most remote Numan fans as Launceston is on the island of Tasmania which is south of the land of Oz. My first Numan single was A.F.E. which I bought in '79 but I didn't buy anything else of his until 1983 when I got hold of the Tubeway Army album. Within six months I had obtained all his album releases available and have been buying them ever since. Other artists that I listen to are Ultravox/Foxx, Inxs, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Devo, Talk Talk etc.. I have an up to date chart list of Gary on his U.K. and U.S. success which I can post if anyone is interested. Also you may like to know that there was a Gary Numan special broadcasted on a national alternative radio station down here as part of a promotion for his Random and Premier Hits releases. This hopefully will help revive some interest in him since he has been largely ignored here since the early '80s. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Aug 1997 02:04:46 -0500 From: Bookman Subject: Not Much To: Gary Numan Has anyone ever noticed that the little percussion intro to Remind Me To Smile is exactly the same as the intro to Blondie's Heart Of Glass? Just a useless observation. Sean Francis wrote: "I'm glad Gary made a few quid out of this (Random), but this drivel won't get played much in my house." After reading your lengthy review of Random, I hereby give you the honor of being the world's most negative person. I mean, sure, I hated a couple tunes from Random, but the rest are either outstanding or very good, IMO. Remember, the covers didn't need to imitate the original to a T. I for one appreciated the diversity of styles on the album. My hat's off to all the artists, even though I didn't like a couple songs. Paul Denman wrote: "I remember talking to Gary about his novel (which I hope will get finished one day) and he said that he thought of God as something that existed, created the world, mankind etc.. and then got bored, lost his/her powers and failed to outlive his/her creation. He also thought that if God was still alive, then he/she was an "evil f*ck"." At first it saddened me somewhat to hear Gary, who I admire immensely, say such things about God, Who I believe in immensely. But after considering his remark, I find that it indicates (in my opinion, now) that Gary feels there IS some kind of higher being or presence out there, and that for whaterver reason, Gary is very angry towards Him. And that's okay, since being angry at God means that you believe there is a God. And everyone gets a little angry at God now and then, it's perfectly normal. Believe me, I get plenty angry at Him myself, but soon realize that it's usually just petty stuff and forget about it. My thanks to everyone for their advice on the dollar/pound thing. My name is Glenn and I live in Wellington New Zealand. Im 32 years old and have followed Gary numan since college in 1978, I'm interested in all forms of electronic/industrial musics so much so that I am releasing a compact disc FEARvLOATHINC-"Bombay Girl"(500)copies that has a heavy Numan influence on it, although I tend toward the more hard edge electronica-Coil, Skinny Puppy, Cassandra Complex etc... I will say that this kind of music especially Gary's is very hard to come by where I live. My main field of interest is sampling & drum programing, not a lot ov call for this kind of thing where I live but that makes it all the more exciting. Im very keen to be on your mailing list and Im am looking forward to the release of "Exhile" the Numan coverage on the net is quite amazing, this makes a nice change for New Zealand Numanoids anyway. ALLEN" Subject: religion To: Hi everybody After receiving the latest edition of the digest, reading the interview that was done by Gary while he was making Sacrifice, I would like to take further his question and challenge any Christian in the world to explain, if there is a "GOD" why does "GOD" let things like Gary mentioned happen. The case Gary refers to were 2 boys of 11 years or so murdered quite horrifically a little boy of only 4 or 5 years old. "GOD" what is the sense in this? Please explain. Also Gary mentions a man called Hes. "GOD" why let someone murder these defenseless people for no other reason than greed, selfishness and personal gain? Please explain. I don't want to course a war between believers and non believers but there are lots of questions like these that I cannot get my head around if "GOD" claims to love and watch over us, how can "GOD" let these things happen, also why are the people who do these terrible things not dammed, why dont they get killed in horrific ways? why do they remain alive? I know you are supposed to forgive and forget but how can the family of that little boy in question(I will not mention any names)come to terms with what has happened and begin to forgive these two boys who have taken their little boys life for no reason, WHY?WHY?WHY? Christians Stand Up And Be Counted - Answer My Questions Please OR Stay Quite. What a review!! I cannot believe I read all that!! I have got to assume that after he listened to it and thought about how much it sucked,he returned it for a full refund, right?? RIGHT?? what the hell did he expect?? I said before:"only Gary can do Gary!" So is true with Random. The only reason I have kept it is because of the two songs mentioned by Sean that he seems to hate the most-Stormtrooper & Poetry and Power. I, for one, think Gravity Kills is a great group, and I am glad to hear that Gary likes them a lot. I also have read some posts about people saying that they are afraid that Gary's new album might sound like GK. I WISH!! that would be great!!! Until next time-LATER!! Thanks for taking the time to read this, John Bored? Take a trip to my homepage!!!!!!! http://members.wbs.net/homepages/b/l/a/blazzer891.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 04:34:49 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Tenor/Magnetic Fields To: "INTERNET:numan@cs.uwp.edu" Jimi Tenor (love him or loathe him) does not misinterpret Down In The Par= k. He knows what the songs about just like Gary knows that "boys putting fingers in dykes" is not about people's sexual preferences. To suggest th= at he didn't listen to the lyrics is..... = He 'got' it Scott. You didn't. I think everyone would agree that he put more effort in than Republica an= d Posh, and for that, if for nothing else, he should be congratulated. Incidentally Sean, The Magnetic Fields? I Die:You Die on a banjo??? = Kind of like playing "The Star Spangled Banner" on electric guitar or "On= Broadway" on synthesizers. Brilliant. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Aug 97 12:36:00 PDT From: Tina Freeman Subject: Videos etc To: digest Hi all I happened upon my only collection video shadow man (thanks to another digest member....hello to you )the other day and i got to thinking if Gaz gets this deal and has to release a single would he do a video? Shadow Man contains quite a varied collection of videos so i thought i'd have a look and based on the different styles give Gaz the benefit of my newly formed showbiz expertise . 1)Staged or not staged For a start Gaz forget the staged videos. In all but "this is love"you looked very uncomfortable. This is love though has to be my fav' out of this collection. 2)Black and white or colour Close up black and white is far more flattering however the right colour choice can look excellent as the in the blue and white of "berserker" 3)Tux or leathers This is a tricky one -tux and dicky bow can look really good white or black but your current music trend would suggest leather but please not the all over leather job of "Warriors" or the blond hair come to that. So,a black and white video taken from concert footage in which your wearing the collarless jacket and riding boots outfit of late would be IMHO excellent (almost worth buying ) ----------------------------- I have found myself in a position where the person who was supposed to be coming with me to the last gig in Shepherds Bush can't make it so i'm left with a spare ticket,if there's anyone (male or female) who would like a free ticket in return for holding my hand incase i get scared drop me a line. I also spotted a transcript from a recent conversation between Gary (allegedly) and several other people on the internet,i'm not going to publish it cause it may upset some of our more religious members but if you would like a copy let me know. I'm crossing everything for you Gaz Take care everyone TF ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
