It was basically the CD albums Pleasure Principal and Telekon with track listings the same as 2 of the four discs from the japanese Asylum CDs (including bonus tracks) BUT as single albums with the orginal artwork and extra japanese lyric booklet ! Needless to say I HAD to get them just to listen to the original album listing and hold the same album I held all those years ago ! Anybody seen the other albums in a similar format ? I'd like to get the whole set Cheers, Mark Winn ------------------------------------------------------------ Position : Principal Systems Analyst Company : SWi Pte Ltd, Singapore E-mail : mark@SWi.com.sg WWW : http://www.SWi.com.sg/~mark/ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 07:14:26 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Don't Be A Dummy To: Gary Numan David, Don't Be A Dummy was an advert Gary recorded in late 78/early 79 for Lee Cooper Jeans. It was done on the back of someone from the ad agency heari= ng the first Tubeway Army album. Gary only did the singing - I believe the characters who appeared in the advert where the then little known members= of The Police - Sting, Stewart and Andy with bleached hair, bright green eyes and leather jackets. The track only lasts about 20 seconds and can be found at the end of the Tubeway Army CD. It is not listed as a seperate track and is actually tacked onto the end of Remember I Was Vapour (Live). You can't skip to i= t on your CD player but need to fast forward through to the end of RIWV. After RIWV finishes, there is about 2 minutes of silence before Don't Be = A Dummy starts, so it's kind of hard to find. I assume it's not listed as Beggars Banquet probably didn't have any right to put it out. We probably= have someone like Steve Webbon to thank, a long time Numan supporter at Beggars Banquet. After Gary became famous, the people behind the advert asked him if he would record a longer version to put out as a single. Obviously he refuse= d, although a single was put out but with John Du Cann (who?) doing the singing. BTW, I said before that there was supposed to be a Gary Numan interview i= n the magazine "Previews" but that it doesn't appear. I was wrong - I've ju= st realised that someone had ripped the page out of the copy that I bought. = Why do people doubt we evolved from apes? On another note, my new band debuted yesterday at the TAWN Fall Fest, and was a rousing success; we start recording soon. Nothing the size of the new Numan deal, but we do have distribution already. Mind you, going utterly against the spirit of this list, the band has absolutely nothing in common with Numan, and displays absolutely no influence from Numan's direction (it would be a bit difficult; we're a Celtic/Folk kind of outfit, mixing original songs with traditional material.) Walters" Subject: Inspiration To: Gary Numan Whatever you do, don't read this post! You'll regret it! I'm beginning to realize just how deeply Gary has "infected" my life... As you might have seen on the World Wide Webb (or perhaps my own site: http://www.accs.net/users/tlwalter/numan.htm ) I once wrote a Numan inspired poem. Well, since that time, I've been working on making my own Numan (as well as an array of other artist) inspired music using my computer. For about the last two months I've been working with one of the songs and the "Listening -- to Gary Numan" poem, which has evolved into "Your Inspiration" an original song by me. A 6:45 song inspired by our Gary. Why am I telling you this? Hell if I know, and I don't really care if you care -- and THAT is the point. (See I told you not to read it) I am one of those who "get" the connection between Gary Numan and the Canadian Trio RUSH. Both are well known for doing what they do on their own terms -- even if it means sacrificing all they have worked so hard for to get things done their way. Integrity to themselves above all others. Along with that, a devotion to their fans equal to the devotion of their fans for them. Honesty. I like that. It's refreshing in a world so full of utter bullshit! Gary Numan and RUSH are two things in this world with which I connect with on a very primal level, and don't really care if anyone else "gets it." So, I'm working on this song... influenced, musically, by the "Down In The Park Piano Version" -- not nearly as amazing though. And the process is repetitious and monotonous -- trying to get exactly what I want. I'm at the point where I need to record the vocals -- which I dread, because I hate my voice. But, I can't "hear" anyone else saying these words. They're MINE after all! And yet, I'm driven. And the words (changed some from the poem version)... they haunt me. Now, I'm at that point in time... do I finish what I've started, or throw it all in? These are the times that distinguish between greatness and mediocrity. Knowing and not knowing. Success and failure. And if I do finish, and I am correct in my thinking (my voice really does suck), and no one else enjoys it -- have I failed? I don't think so, because I did it and I did it my own way. Well, there you have it. That wasn't so hard after all. Thanks for listening, and thank you Gary Numan... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all, Just a quick intro (well, more of a re-intro.). I'm back on the list after a year or so of being "cut off". It's been bad, but it's nice to feel connected again. My name is Phil Lindsay, born Belfast, NI. Educated Loughborough University in Aero Eng. and Ergonomics, now working for British Aerospace in Preston, England. I've been a fan for about 9-10 years now (scary), buy all the records and go to see the gigs whenever I can (14 times and counting). Got quite excited about 'Random' recently and felt a bit let down by it. However it's growing on me. Oddly enough one of the better tracks was by Damon Albarn, really simply done and true to the original. Can't wait for Exile and the new tour. I heard some of the new stuff when Gary played at the V96 festival last year, and it sounded cool. I'm actually trying to avoid hearing much more of it until the album comes out, so as not to spoil the surprise. Other things : play electric bass in a R'n'R'n'B band, do a bit of flying, like Crowded House (a lot), Republica, Sugar, and a little known combo called 'Goodbye Mr. Mackensie'. Also leaning towards happy house music and Techno at the moment. Oh yeah, I teach Jiu Jitsu too. You probably didn't want to know that. Anyhow, that's all from me 'til the religious argument pops up again (sometimes I think we forget that we don't own Gary). Cheers! Enjoy. :-) I recently reported here that the Nicholson/Numan material, released under the names "Radio Heart" and "Numan and Dadadang", has been reissued by The Record Label as a limited-edition release. I mentioned this with some measure of personal excitement, but to my consternation there has been some very negative reaction to this release. In a recent Numan Digest, one writer slammed The Record Label for regurgitating this material on us. He seemed particularly upset that they would have the unmitigated gall to actually email many fans (using email addresses culled from the Digest) to let them know of the availability of this material. Folks, if it's properly targeted, it's not spam. Many people in the Digest have been specifically ASKING for this stuff to finally get released on CD, so when The Record Label finally does decide to do it for us, why are they being slagged for letting us know about it? How the hell *ELSE* should they have done it? A letter to the Digest? Sure, good idea - but that would miss a lot of people, as many fans I know don't read the Digest. Email all the site authors? Another great idea, but again it misses a lot of people. This release is specifically targetted to Numan fans, and even if I had no interest in the release itself I certainly wouldn't be pissed off at them for emailing me about it. As it happens, I am one of the ones who specifically asked for this stuff, and I was THRILLED to get that email. So maybe my opinion is somewhat biased, but I really can't understand what the fuss is about. And then I got some *REALLY* entertaining email. The writer told me not to buy this material until I had first checked out the new anti-Nicholson editorial that now appears on the NuZone Numan News page. Excuse me? I need Matthew Holbrook's permission to buy, and enjoy, a CD? Pardon me for being blunt, but SHOVE THAT IDEA UP YOUR ASS!!! It's obvious that Matthew is very anti-Nicholson, and that's his opinion. Mine differs. I think it's ironic that of the two of us, Matthew has a full collection of this material on vinyl whereas all I've managed to collect so far is the "Like A Refugee" CD single and a fuzzy recording of the "Radio Heart" video. Matthew sez of Hugh Nicholson: "It's difficult to think of many people that Numan fans have less respect for." Uh, Matthew, WHICH Numan fans are you talking about? Are you inferring that I'm not a Numan fan? I must not be, because I don't share this negative view - I look at Hugh Nicholson as a man who felt Gary's name would lend some credibility to his project and that's actually something of a compliment, this coming in 1987 when Numan's career was at something of a low ebb. Gary went into it with his eyes wide open, so what's the problem here? Matthew sez: "Many see Gary's involvement with 'Radio Heart' as disastrous." Matthew, who are the "many" you're talking about? Names, please. Matthew sez: "Indeed, most site (sic) 'London Times' as the worst thing Gary has ever been involved with." Hard to believe, Matthew, since a large number of Numan fans have never heard the song. And personally, I believe "Machine + Soul" was the worst thing Gary was ever involved with, and Hugh Nicholson had NOTHING to do with that. Many fans are being led to believe that this release constitutes exploitation of Gary Numan. Well, hell - Gary got a cheque for participating in these projects and he'll get another cheque after this reissue is completed. I don't think Gary feels exploited, do you? Or is it *THE FANS* that are being exploited? Possibly, but I can't really buy that argument until I see evidence of Hugh Nicholson holding a gun to somebody's head and demanding that they buy this CD. By visiting their web page you get a complete run-down of what's on the CD - if it seems worth paying 15 pounds for it, then buy it. If it does not, then don't. It's quite simple, really. We call it "capitalism" and "free market" - nobody can exploit you unless you permit it. The same goes for Matthew's (and Gary's) continued ragging of Receiver Records (or whatever they're called this week) for releasing endless Numan compilations - specifically, the recent editorial against "Archive Volume 2". OK, maybe these are ill-advised compilations. Maybe they'd be quite low on my list of recommended purchases for new fans. But Matthew tells us (when speaking of "Gary Numan - Archive Series"), "don't buy this compilation because it offers nothing new and is being issued illegally." I simply have to respond: look, I don't have the contract in front of me, but obviously a contract WAS SIGNED and so far I haven't seen Numa Records getting a restraining order against Receiver. So it can't be that illegal and Matthew's statement becomes borderline libelous. Gary himself recommends that fans not buy this material but he really doesn't tell us WHY. Well, Gary, if you signed a bad contract then that's your fault, not ours, and as long as it's still available for sale, the decision about whether or not to buy remains mine. I appreciate your advice but I'll make the call. The Radio Heart and Dadadang tracks, specifically those that Gary was involved with, were not written by Gary Numan. In fact, he was essentially "rent-a-singer" for these recording sessions. So before you buy this stuff, realize that you're not getting anything CLOSE to "typical Numan". However, the material *DOES* stand up well on its own and is well worth owning - my copy was ordered last week. If you're sitting on the fence, try to see if you can find someone near you who owns some or all of this material and ask them to let you listen to it once or twice before deciding. But please don't base your decision on the sky-is-falling rantings of others, or even my own - make this decision YOURSELF, based on how YOU feel about it. Don't let others do your thinking for you. No, not even me. :-) /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 403-606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@ab.imag.net lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEBB: http://www.ab.imag.net/worldwidewebb/ /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / I invented the cordless extension cord. / --Steven Wright /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 09:21:36 +0100 From: amchaffie@meto.gov.uk Subject: Numan in "Boyz" To: Numan Digest Numan Digest Gary had a small article in "Boyz" this week. Oh, wait, he's not dead yet. :-) I'm referring to the negative reaction to "The Record Label" and their limited edition CD reissue of the Radio Heart/Dadadang material. Andy McHaffie posted some nastygrams publicly in this forum, and I know at least one other reader here was somewhat miffed about The Record Label's mass emailing, so I would suspect a few others are as well. So lemme put some perspective on this for ya. For the last several years, people IN THIS DIGEST have been moaning and bitching that much of this material isn't available, or isn't available on CD, or costs too much (Derek made the point about this reissue saving us from having to buy both "Like A Refugee" CD's). I have been one of those whiners - I *LOVE* the Radio Heart stuff and have spoken in this forum often of my desire to have it on compact disc. So what happens? The people at "The Record Label" have obviously been reading this Digest, because it was from this Digest that they compiled their mass emailing list. They read the demand for the material and responded accordingly and put together what appears to be a very nice, very COMPLETE package for people to get all of this material together at one relatively low price. But then they committed the cardinal sin. They dared to advertise the availability of the product, by sending email to many Digest subscribers. GASP! OH, THE SHAME! Folks, wake up and smell the coffee. WE SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED this release and now we're bitching at them for daring to violate our email boxes by TELLING US THAT THEY HAVE GRANTED OUR REQUEST. Derek suggested it would have been nice if they'd posted a notice directly to the Digest, and I agree - but I suspect that whoever was in charge of this may not have known how to post to a mailing list, but posting email is fairly simple. Beyond a notice to this Digest, HOW ELSE WOULD YOU SUGGEST that they go about letting us know that this material is now available? There are some of you that weren't too impressed with this material in the first place and I know I'm gonna get some responses along that line. OK, if you think the Nicholson/Numan material was crap, then fine. Don't buy it. I just think it's the height of hypocrisy to see us all moaning and complaining about Numan AND US being ignored all the time, and then moaning and complaining *AGAIN* when we get noticed and our wishes get catered to. Unsolicited email isn't "spam" when it's properly targeted, and despite what you may feel about their tactics or this material, we *WERE* properly targetted. If you don't want to buy the material, don't buy it, but don't bitch when someone goes out of their way to produce Numan material SPECIFICALLY FOR US IN THE DIGEST and then dares to let you know it's available. You're simply shooting yourself in the foot... and, incidentally, those bullets are ricocheting into the rest of us as well. My order's been placed. Has yours? :-) /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 403-606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@ab.imag.net lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEBB: http://www.ab.imag.net/worldwidewebb/ /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / If bugs bother you then close your Windows. /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 1997 20:04:30 -0400 From: Michael Zitaglio <102545.641@compuserve.com> Subject: Subscription To: Numan Digest Please unsubscribe me.
