Gary's Faves Gary Numan Digest V1 #325 Hidden Songs Lord of the Rings Numan + Rush Numan never drinks? That damned CD..... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 1997 17:21:03 -0400 From: Sean Francis Subject: Another Cover To: "Numan Digest (GN)" Folks, Saw Live in Houston on Monday night. Just brilliant. The Americans freak= ed over their stage set. Although impressive, I've seen our Gary do a lot better. I'm sure they'd freak just as much over an even modest Numan sta= ge show. It would be nice to find out though, eh ? = Anyway, I was scanning the Singles rack in my local Blockbuster t'other day, looking for the Manson single containing their cover of DITP. Didn't= find it, but I did see a CD single by Tia called ............."Cars". "I= t couldn't be", I thought to myself as I handed over said disc to the long haired being at the 'play before you buy' counter. After a few moments t= he first track started and hey, it was the immortal "Cars" we all know and =2E.....um ......love. Tia's version is hideous, but at least she had a g= o and made a few more quid for our Man. That's it - over and out from Houston. Sean. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 1997 08:28:40 +0000 (GMT) From: Philip Lindsay Subject: DaDaDang. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I've been reading all this traffic about the Radio Heart/Like a Refug= ee CD=20 release and feel: =091. Wouldn't it be better if people let the rest of us make our own= =20 decisions about this material, instead of 'representing' us with poss= ibly=20 ill-considered responses? I don't get lots of spam in my mailbox, and= one mail=20 regarding something I'm quite interested in (for god's sake, someone= =20 re-releasing bits of Radio Heart - cool!) doesn't strike me as being = a crime. If=20 you don't like it, bin it, 'tis but the work of a moment. =092. Even if the material is slightly dodgy quality, I have virtuall= y=20 every other Numan track on CD/vinyl, and for sad completists like me = this is=20 really interesting stuff. If you don't want it, you don't have to buy= it. =093. Why do some people (in whatever forum) seem to hate Hugh Nichel= son so=20 much? What has he done to them? Personally I have no feelings either = way about=20 the fellow, except that (IMHO) he did some interesting stuff with Gar= y in 1987. =094. I still really like Radio Heart (and I know London Times isn't = Gary's=20 finest hour), and Like a Refugee was a great single. Unfortunately I = can't=20 listen to it any more due to emotional connections, but that's life. = I always=20 wondered what the video to the single was like, because I remember Ga= ry talking=20 about filming it out in Italy and being incredibly impressed with the= drummers. =20 (they did make the video, didn't they? Or am I going mad.). On a different note, the last digest post about the interview in 'Boy= z', does=20 anyone have any more details on the autobiography 'Praying to the Ali= ens'? I=20 heard about it being started, but nothing since. Phil. P.S. TF - Gary may have used a couple of covers to pad out an album, = but it=20 turned out to be Machine and Soul, his acknowledged career low album,= and if I=20 remember rightly, his choice of songs was heavily influenced by his g= irlfriend=20 of the time. I always thought 'U got the look' was a strange choice, = but then,=20 it was a strange time for Gary (I really dislike M&S, never listen to= it any=20 more, no redeeming features). One album which he was struggling to fi= nish=20 doesn't strike me as exploitative to the fans. He was going through a= creative=20 crisis at the time. If he hadn't finished that album in the way that = he did, we=20 might not be in a position to have this discussion now. Gary has alwa= ys paid=20 attention to his fan's views, and I'll put up with spending =A312 on = a dodgy album=20 if it keeps Gary working to produce stunning stuff like Sacrifice and= Exile. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 1997 18:28:07 -0700 From: Sue and Russ Ashworth Subject: Dadadang it! Sorry for the lengthy repost here, but I just wanna say that I am one of the few who didn't receive this e-mail, don't know where it came from, or how to get it, and love Radio Heart to pieces. Will some kind soul please re-send it to me-maybe you Joey if you would be so kind, as I really need to buy this right now, and get moody when frustrated. -Sue Ashworth .AKA Dr. Ruthless Queen of the F***ing Universe.*.82% impure Carreyholic.*.Electric Friend. JK...at least we now have a lighter bit of Gary fluff to rip apart like the pack of wolf pups we obsessive Numanoids are. Please place tongue firmly in cheek before proceeding. CANDY: Cadbury's Fudge bars Well, at least it's in the chocolate family, therefore no blame can be placed here, although the lack of nuts concerns me. Gary surely needs a protein boost to keep him going. PERFUME: There's a Calvin Klein rip off, called something like Kindred Spirit. It smells just the same but is a tenth of the price. Aha! And Gary claims he's not having any money problems, yet here he must turn economist when it comes to his scent....what can we glean from this? Perhaps we should start a fund for Gary's fragrance budget. MOVIE: Seven Hmmm.....I liked that one too, but presumably not for the reasons Gary does, unless he liked staring at BP's backside as much as I did. ITEM OF CLOTING: My black flying jacket Ah, black...leather...probably offset with CK ripoff cologne. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE: I don't drink. Never have. Not making friends with the Irish, is he? BREAKFAST CEREAL: Frosties Well, you wouldn't expect Gary to eat oatmeal. UNDERWEAR: These checked pants. I think they're from Tesco So they're checked...are they silk? ICE CREAM: Vanilla. Its the only flavour I like His having the same taste in ice cream as I do almost makes up for his dislike of pizza. Still Gary, if you haven't had Ben & Jerry's Macadamia Ripple..... COLOUR OF SHEETS: Black Good color choice....again, are they silk? POLITICIAN: At the moment, Tony Blair Yep, he comes off good. Maybe he could handle your publicity, Gary. SHAMPOO: Citrus Shine Okay, maybe the fragrance fund should be expanded to include all toiletries. TV SHOW: Star Trek Not good enough, Gary...WHICH Star Trek? There is incredible competition between us DS9ers and those TNG types, not to mention TOS and Voyager (yes, I did have to mention Voyager, sorry). CARTOON CHARACTER: Bart Simpson Okay....so I'd have gone with something more cuddly and traditional...or not. My faves are Marvin the Martian and The Tick, although recently I've been taking a liking to Nickelodeon's Angry Beavers. Perhaps Bart isn't passé in Britain yet. CITY: Los Angeles Help me on this one, Miss Marlene. LA has it's wonderful points, such as the ability to have your windshield washed at every stoplight while fresh produce is shoved through your window by residentially-challenged people, and it has some darn good entertainment venues, where you can be guaranteed of being treated rudely by various employees for twice the going rate. Still, it is one of the few places where one can get noticed for NOT having an unusual hair color and/or piercings in unusual or unexpected places. And after a bracing morning cough of the healthful emissions one can brave the exhilerating challenge of actually surviving six hours of traffic to get where most Angelenos like to go...away from the city. Just how long is it that Gary's been away? Listen Gary, if you really like SoCal, forget LA...head for Riverside....or Rialto....or San Diego. (Gee, I'm not being too obvious, am I?) RESTAURANT: The Blue Strawberry in Hatfield Peveral, near Chelmsford Never been there, but then haven't been to either Hatfield Peveral or Chelmsford. I imagine they don't serve Indian or pizza. Probably have a mean Diet Coke. PAIR OF SHOES: I've got a nice pair of sparkly DM boots He's got such good taste in clothes. 'Fess up, Gary, Gemma's been picking out your wardrobe, hasn't she? (PS--really cool people don't use the word nice when referring to their Docs, but we'll let that one go because we all know you actually are so cool you don't have to sound that way.) ITEM OF JEWELERY: My wedding ring. Maybe that doesn't count because I'm sort of obliged to wear it, so I'll say this nice knuckle ring that I've got. Gemma probably bought that, too. BOOK: Lord of the Rings A genuine shocker. Never imagined Gary as an elves and hobbits and wizards sort of guy. Still, at least I understood that one. Still can't figure out most of William S. Burroughs. Maybe one has to be high to get it. WORK OF ART: I'm not a very arty person...can I say Lord of the Rings again? Unless I'm mistaken, you did. MADONNA SONG: Erotica Another shocker....he even knows a Madonna song? Much less has a favorite from her? Perhaps he just threw that out because he'd heard the title and didn't want to say Lord of the Rings again. Can't wait to hear your opinions. Peace, Lyssa -- Tearin it up..I'm living on empty... I regularly read Matthews news page and it can often give some really useful news, however the idea of news is that news is reported, not that it should be used to influence or even tell people what they should do as a result of it. That I consider to be a little condecending. I am sure Matthew would be less than impressed if the BBC news started saying things like "Come the next election don't vote Conservative, they exploited us last time!" There is a very clear line between News reporting and Opinion. Maybe Matthew should open a new section on his page called Opinion and put his views in there, not in the news section. I would not wish to restrict Matthews views via the internet, but there is a place for it. Now! Lets all calm down, because I don't think there should be fistycuffs on the next tour! See you all on tour!!!! Interesting to hear this since when GN was performing his final shows in 1981 at Wembley, Gary was quoted as being "drunk every night of the show so far" by the Melody Maker or Record News (IIRC). Somebody with April 1981 issues of either paper might want to check that (it was a large spread IIRC).
