Just to add my two cents. I think the Numan prefers The Next Generation Star Trek. Quite why is a mystery as we all know if there ain't Bones, Spok, Scottie and Kirk, it just ain't Star Trek. Did anyone else find the 'politically correct' Next= Generation irritating, "to boldly go where no ONE has gone before". Oh please ;-) The BBC started showing The Simpsons early on a Saturday evening some tim= e ago. In the UK this is a prime slot. A strange choice as (a) The Simpson= s isn't funny or entertaining and (b) UK TV is 95% American already. But wh= at do I know, I still think Beavis & Butthead are hilarious. Hatfield Peveral is a sleepy little town just outside the armpit we know = as Chelmsford. I lived in South Woodham Ferrers (which is close by) for quit= e a while so know the area quite well. That whole Essex thing is dire. Gar= y doesn't drink Diet Coke. I went to his house one time and took Cokes wit= h me (what a creep !). I took the precaution of taking regular and diet an= d offered both to him. He turned down the diet and gave me this story abou= t the sweetener in diet (Aspartame) being a mild poison. He said that if taken in large quantities it does your brain in and causes blackouts. If = he did drink diet then drinking the amount of Coke he does and flying planes= , he said, would not be a good combination. He also said something about t= he Coco Cola company which I shan't report as it is probably libellous ! = Incidentially, he was very pleased with the small supply of Coke I was ab= le to give him as he was right out of Coke on that occasion. I can't claim = to have fed out hero, but I have watered him (ooerr, sounds a bit perrvy tha= t ;-). Sparkly DMs does sound like the sort of influence that would come from a pink 2CV driver. No, we don't have to like it, and we may even ramble on about it, but it's their right to author their page the way they choose. I'm sure he's not mad at us for buying the cd, and I'm not mad at him for not wanting to buy the cd....(gee, it's nice we all get along...Where's Nick Foxx when we need him.....);-) As far as Gazza's favorite restaraunt, no, they probably don't serve pizza, however, I will put a big bet down they serve great sausages and chips...:-) Anyone know what Gemma likes to eat?? (nothing dirty in my emails, please) :-) Gee, according to the latest news, Gary's autobiography has been pushed back to October 20th, same day as "Exile" and hopefully for the new website "Exile" (original name.....I know, I know, but I didn't want to Welcome you to Dead Heaven...:-)) Enough for now...Play safe..:-) Dave (who likes to smile A LOT:-))))) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 13:25:06 -0400 (EDT) From: DCGaySLP@aol.com Subject: Dawn promo...anyone else find it? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi everyone.... I'm trying to beat Somacrow@aol.com for posting a message to the digest...hee hee hee... I finally found a comic book store in suburban Washington DC that was ordering the Dawn CD (reissue of the Sacrifice CD for US release). Present word has it it will be out in late Oct/early Nov and sport FABULOUS artwork by Joseph Michael Lisner, the artist of the comic Dawn. After talking with the owners of the store and all, leaving my name and number, I was surprised a few days later when I got a call from them talking about a limited edition promo release of a Dawn CD single. I zipped out to check it out....limited edition of 1000, different CD artwork than the commercially to-be-released CD single (downside: No CD single jewelbox). The store owner was willing to part with it (for a substantial amount of $) but I now have a Numan collectors Item...I'm sooo happy. The CD single has "Magic", "Play Like God" and "You Walk in My Soul" on it...no different than the original releases of the songs from Sacrifice (boo hoo...I was hoping for at least a remix of something). Dawn, the CD, will sell for $16.98 when it hits the comic stores, but from what I understand, it will be released to CD stores in January or something..... OH! "My World Storm", the AOL Gary Numan chatroom still exists and neeeeeds more people to participate....if you are on AOL, please email me and I'll be happy to send you the room link, if you don't have it. I'm still looking for someone in the UK willing to play "room host" for a time convenient on the European front, since we use the room here in the US at 9pm EST (2am for the UK people...sorry). Special thanx to Somacrow, BDay0000, TimeCodeA, Andyscobra, Keth Scott, Replicant6, Alphafem1, Sistersurx and all on AOL for the Numan pictures, offers to send me phun Numan stuff (tapes, vid, CDs, etc) and participating what we affectionately now call the "Stormroom" (my chatroom)....Love you all!!! :-D Bye for now.....Rick the Stormtrooper ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 20:35:16 -0500 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Dramatis discography To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all! I've been having trouble lately getting over to the Dramatis website to check out any discography information on Gary's old mates! Does anyone know of a Dramatis discography either from this website or not? If you do, any information you might have would be greatly appreciated! Come to think of it, are there any Numanoids out there who own some original Dramatis 7" & 12" vinyl? I'm pretty sure they had only one album, "For Future Reference", but they had a number of 7" and 12" singles and I'm trying to track them down. Many thanks if you can assist! Happily, the same doesn't apply to you and I think your points are well made. However, suggesting that The Record Label are altruistically responding to fans wishes is stretching the point a bit. The Radio Heart CD and video look very much like shoddy money grubbing exercises - I think we agree about the cause (money), but perhaps we disagree about the effect (quality). Still, I'll probably buy them, being= the oppressed proletarian that I am :~ / Gary once said that he'd never been paid for the Radio Heart stuff, despi= te their promises. Unfortunately that statement now sounds kind of dubious, since he went on to record Like A Refugee with them. As to the quality of the music, well...... it was bland-o-matic pop slush= at it's most sickly. Machine & Soul may be Gary's worst record (I'm not sure) but it's light years ahead of Nicholson's efforts. = If Techno Army was Gary's China Girl, then Radio Heart was his Laughing Gnome. This is my first time writing in. Hope I'm sending it to the right place. I just want to comment on Sean Francis' statement that Machine and Soul was career lowpoint for Gary. I don't quite see it that way! Dance was Gary's best album, and the albums leading up to it got better and better, but I judge everything that followed Dance by a different standard. I like all of the post-Dance albums about equally. (To be fair I haven't heard Sacrifice yet) If anything, I think Machine and Soul was one of the better ones. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Oct 1997 01:51:15 +0000 From: Tomohiro TABATA Subject: Introduction of the Japanese newcomer Numanoid! To: numan-news-groups Dear members, It's my pleasure to participate this news group. I'll introduce myself. But I apologize my English is very poor. My name is Tomohiro TABATA, 30 years old, a Japanese man live in Tokyo. I am a staff writer of economic news section of a Japanese news paper. I have been a Numanoid for 16 years. When I was 14 years old, a junior high school student, I played some numan's song (Me, I disconnect from you, The mach man, bombers,....) with my band in school festival and city festival. Of course, I have been collecting numan's items as possible as I can. My tresure is a video of "The Touring Principle '79" of an Warner Home Video. Besides Numan, I like DEVO, KRAFTWERK, JOHN FOXX, and so on. I like almost all british musicians in 80's. I can play drums and keybord. My favorite drumer is Jet Black, and Pete de Flatus (ex.Bunnymen. Sorry, I don't know his correct spell). I am very looking foward to reading articles concerend about Numan's. Thanks a lot. I've got some strong opinions, and he's got some strong opinions. He will NEVER convince me that the Nicholson/Numan material is crap, and I'll NEVER convince him it was great. And that's fine, we have opinions. I had some things to say and I did indeed take Matthew to task on a few things, but that's the beauty about living in a free society: two people can have an honest difference of opinion and not have to worry about the gestapo coming for you in the middle of the night. :-) Thanks for the support - I've had a TON of email over this and a few notes here in the Digest. I'd like to clarify a few things, though, starting with: 1) The whole point of this thing was to get people to think for themselves. Don't simply read someone else's opinion and then decide "yep, that sounds right" and adopt it for yourself. Cuz then it's not your opinion, and you deserve to have your own. This by definition includes MY opinions, the ones many of you have emailed me to say you agree with. Grin! All I'm saying is: keep an open mind and listen to both sides in any dispute - and more particularly, ALWAYS distrust a situation that calls for an opinion when you do NOT have both sides. Matt Nicholson will be emailing me sometime soon (so he says) in response to some of the criticisms that have been made about the Radio Heart CD reissue. That's a CRUCIAL side to this whole thing that hasn't been presented - we've talked ABOUT the Nicholsons but they've never had their day in court. When I get this material I'll post it to my webb site and flip a copy to the Digest. 2) Matthew, and several of you, were somewhat upset at one thing in particular that I mentioned in my earlier rant. Basically what happened is that I received email from somebody saying that I should read Matthew's news page (and his anti-Nicholson views) before placing my order - this in response to my exuberant promotion of the release. I was quite ticked off and I asked the guy since when do I need Matthew's permission to enjoy a CD? I followed this with "SHOVE THAT IDEA UP YOUR ASS". Obviously, I was slightly displeased. I guess I wasn't clear enough, though. I never intended to infer that *MATTHEW* was saying we needed his permission. Not at all. The person I was ticked at was the writer of this email, not Matthew. The writer has since apologized and I have also apologized for jumping all over him. :-) 3) One of the things that really got me upset about this whole thing was that it got personal. By that I meant that we were seeing rather nasty things said about Hugh Nicholson, and Hugh isn't here to defend himself. Now, I myself am guilty of this because I got a wee bit personal in my latest rant (called "Matthew Strikes Back" on my web site, it was not posted to this Digest - if you wanna see it, check out my web site address below), calling Matthew on the carpet for a few things I wasn't too pleased to see him write. So, okay. Mea culpas all around, and let's try to let this personal thing fade before it DOES turn into a war, ok? I don't hate Matthew... I don't even dislike him... in fact, I still like him and respect him a whole ton, although I suspect he's not too impressed with me these days. :-) But let's all, starting with Matthew and myself, try to stick to the issues. I'd love to see a renewed debate on the Radio Heart/Dadadang thing continue, especially with the reissue forthcoming - there's a *LOT* of people reading this Digest who have never, ever heard any of this material and are sitting on the fence, unsure whether or not to buy it or not. So let's all stick our two bits in and help 'em decide. :-) I vote yes, by the way. :-) (Gosh, Joey, what a surprise...) And that leads me to some new information you should know, especially if you've already ordered. What I'm being told now is that we should expect those CD's and videos to begin shipping in about 4 weeks. Why the delay? Because they're evaluating demand before they begin production. This means that if you're gonna place your order, you'd better do it soon. If not enough orders come in, they aren't gonna go through with it. In short, this release is being done specifically for us, because we asked for it, and now we're being asked to put our money where our mouths are. Record companies aren't in the business of losing money, after all. :-) /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 403-606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@ab.imag.net lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEBB: http://www.ab.imag.net/worldwidewebb/ /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / "The power of one mind can change the universe." / --Everything I Need To Know I Learned From Babylon 5 /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 09:21:45 -0700 (PDT) From: av578@lafn.org (James Dawson) Subject: Note From The Big Orange To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The last "Digest" included this (edited) post of reactions to Gary Numan's favorite things: >Date: Thu, 25 Sep 1997 01:45:29 -0800 >From: Alyssa Jaraba >Subject: Gary's Faves >To: Gary Numan >(snip) >CITY: Los Angeles >Help me on this one, Miss Marlene. I've lived in Los Angeles for the better part of the last 10 years and have NEVER seen any "squeegee people" here. So even if the occasional straggler may have accosted Ms. Jaraba's vehicle, this certainly is not a problem one would encounter at "every stoplight" -- or even at every fiftieth stoplight, and probably not at every 100th stoplight. IMHO, better than anything on Random...seems more like someone who really WORSHIPS Gary. Christian Death "Down in the Park" from "The Iron Mask"on Cleopatra Records, recorded live and totally played on guitar, bass and drums; it's very "Gothic"-sounding and badly recorded. It is a bit of a novelty though, as the only Gothic Numan cover I know of. Luxt "Cars" from "Newer Wave"on 21st Circuitry Records(Compilation of New Wave covers by Industrial Bands). Another novelty, (as is the whole album) and brings nothing "new" to the song we haven't heard before, the rest of the album is listenable, though... Like I said, The INformation SOCiety version is best(IMO), but if you buy the album, keep in mind they have "Gone Industrial" and the album is much darker and heavier than any of their "POP" stuff. But, I've managed to gain 1 bit of knowledge which I find very encouraging (excuse me if it's been said before). Its regarding the new record deal. The new company Gary is signed to is called 'Eagle Records' ... OK, nothing new there. BUT in the past, (well, since '83) Gary's records have been distributed mainly by Pinnacle - the UK's major Indie distributor (excuse the contradiction). The good news is that 'Eagle Records' are to be distributed (and I presume owned by) the world giant 'BMG records'. >From my days at HMV & Our Price, I seem to remember that BMG are the world's BIGGEST music distributor. This is obviously fantastic news for Gary & his fans & should produce a PR machine much more effective than seen for Gary's releases over the recent years. Oh, and by the way, I did see Gary drinking some kind of strong cider at a hotel in Manchester the other year - so, he does drink now & again it would seem. ;-) Finally, just to add my two-penneth to the Radio Heart debate, I am very glad the material has been released as I like a lot of the stuff. I suppose this wailing and gnashing of teeth over the Nicholson stuff is of another sort of religion, and the CD is a sort of indulgence or apple. So we'd have Matthew wearing a long beard and flowing robes screaming, "Resist the Dark One!" and Joey waving around a staff and bellowing, "No, really, Eve, choose for yourself whether you want the apple or not! Don't let that snake tell you what to do!" Joey may not be American, but he knows a bit about freedom of religion. :) (And speaking of the Anglican Church, where did Gary get married? The thought of Mr. "I'll kick that bugger in the balls" tying the knot in a church seems a bit ... outlandish.) Like, hel-LO, y'all!
