Scorbie? We are both from Chicago and met in the early 80's at WaxTrax records and have been good friends ever since and he is no longer reachable. I thought maybe someone out there might have a clue. I know that he respected the Machman and thought that there still maybe some kind of correspondence. Also of note, I just received John Foxx's '95 releases one of which is a CD entitled Cathedral Oceans with tracks 7-11 being quite the celestial. Thank you to the Numanoid who mentioned that he was still around! I am also a big Cocteau Twins aficionado and recently bought a 10 CD collection box set with EPs that I only had on albums and cassettes. One has a couple of unreleased pieces. If anyone out there wants to get lost in dreamy sounds I highly recommend the EP Echoes in a Shallow Bay with My FAVORITE song The Great Spangled Fritillary(I think it is on that CD). Believe me, if you have an ear for sound, you still will have to listen to this piece over and over to hear it all. It has quite a climax to it. [ email is too easy - the words come out of our fingers before they have had chance to go through our brains.] No, I really laughed at the comment that we were all getting on so well, so where is nICK fOX when you need him, and then I really was in the mood for James Dawson's comments on Los Angeles, and squeegee merchants. That whole piece was so witty. If any of you really have got dirty windscreens, go to Belgrade... (That's even further east than New York). I find it hard to believe :-) I have all the Dramatis 7" singles and they are: Ex Luna Scientia / Lady D J (XPRES 53) Oh! Twenty Twenty Five / The Curtain (XPRES 61) No-One Lives Forever / For Future Reference (XPRES 63) Love Needs No Disguise / Take Me Home (BEG 68) Face On The Wall / Pomp And Stompandstamp (XPRES 69) The Shame / I Only Find Rewind (XPRES 79) I Can See Her Now / One Step Ahead (XPRES 83) Dennis Haines had left the group by the time of Face On The Wall. I think there were 12" versions of all the singles. I have Ex Luna Scient= ia (XPRES 5312), No-One Lives Forever Remixed (XPRES 6312)& The Shame Dance Party Mix 1 (XPRES 7912). Oh, and of course Love Needs No Disguise. There= are no additional Dramatis tracks on the 12" singles I have. I'm not a massive fan but I do think The Shame and I Can See Her Now are excellent. = I believe there was at least one other unreleased track, as I recall Chri= s Payne saying their best track hadn't been put out (or was he being speculative?). I have two 7" and two 12" singles. This is from memory, as I'm away on business right now: 7" Ex Luna Scientia / Lady DJ. Both fade out about 10 seconds early. I detect a very slight remix on Ex Luna. 7" No One Lives Forever / "For Future Reference". The flip side is a collage of four tracks, each snippet lasting less than a minute. If memory serves, they are: Turn Turn, I Only Find Rewind, Upon Reflection, and Human Sacrifice, the latter not showing up on the LP. So, there is at least one unreleased Dramatis track out there, for I never saw Human Sacrifice on vinyl. 12" I Can See Her Now / some instrumental, I forget the name. 12" Love Needs No Disguise / Take Me Home. The flip side is a version of a track found on a Denis Haines solo new age-ish CD. And I forget the name of the CD. Sorry I couldn't remember everything. If no one else can identify the stuff I forgot, I'll post an update when I return home in a week. And, I don't collect vinyl anymore, so I'm open to suggestions if anyone's interested in obtaining the above singles from me. Also have The Touring Principle video with original box, and the Sharpe & Numan "Automatic" CD which I'll sell, probably for more than anyone would want to pay though. Finally, where is Tony Boies? His email address (tboies@shentel.com) isn't valid anymore. Can someone (or YOU, Tony, if you're reading!) hook me up with Tony? Thankew, JAD... It saves TV in America amidst the total utter saccharin crap being shown everyday. I think it misses the mark in England - Like Seinfeld did. It's about stupid suburban white trash (and there's plenty of that here!!!). I love it! Although the new Simpsons season is below the par for me. Wait til you people see "South Park". Tee hee... I'm glad amost everyone seemed to enjoy my last post and shared in the levity of the moment. However, I seem to have offended one party in my references to Los Angeles. While I tried at the beginning of the post to remind everyone that this was for humor's sake only, my comments about my hometown seem to have caused Mr. Dawson some grief. For this I would apologize and ask him to remember that those of us who have lived in this City and it's environs since birth often join in the time-honored tradition of complaining about where we live. Any Londoner you meet will grin and tell you the weather stinks, New Yorkers will spend delightful hours complaining about traffic, parking, and the smell of bodily fluids on the subway, Clevlanders focus on how bad their sports teams are, and apparently from Sean's comments Essex is dire and Chelmsford is an armpit (we reserve that title for Barstow here in California, but I suppose Johnny Carson could have meant that Barstow was the right armpit and Chelmsford could therefore be the left one). Even Martin Harper (welcome to the digest, Martin) affectionately refers to Nashville as "Hicksville"...in all caps yet. For the record, I was born in Inglewood and grew up there, and although I currently live outside of the Greater Los Angeles Area in Riverside, I have up until recently worked and gone to school in the city and plan to attend UCLA within two years. In 30 years of experience with LA, I would have to say my facts are as straight as anyone else's. I have never actually been to the Big Apple and therefore I wouldn't claim to have the least bit of knowledge about street people activities there, but I do know LA. Perhaps you have been particularly lucky and I am driving around with a bumper sticker I hadn't noticed that says "Sell me bags of oranges and wash my windshield." At any rate, the comments I made were in no way meant to be taken as a serious insult against Los Angeles. Indeed, one person noted to me in a phone conversation that she recalled hearing Gary say that what he liked about LA was the people, and in that regard, I must agree with him. Angelenos are among the most courteous and friendly urbanites in the world. We are known for our tolerance, easy-goingness, and in most cases, self-depricating sense of humor. Los Angeles is also a unique and in many ways incredible city. And I must say, even those who sell produce and wash windows are nice people. As for the comments about other places he might choose to visit, that was sort of an inside joke that other regular posters would get. The three cities included my city of residence and the cities where two other digest regulars live. It was meant in the same vein of tongue-in-cheek humor as the rest of the posting. I guess what I'm trying to say is, Mr. Dawson, relax, lighten up. Humor is humor. On a lighter side, a big mea culpa for not knowing about the aspartame thing. Better go with good old natural sugar to accompany that caffeine kick...might make up for the lack of nuts in Gary's chocolate bars. Maybe we should send the Gazz a case of Jolt and see if that speeds up the album production thing. Egads, Gary's a ST:TNG fan? Picard's no Kirk, I can't possibly imagine Crusher spouting off with "He's dead, Jean-Luc!", and I too was insulted by the whole PC anal starchiness of TNG....can't see how Gary can stand it, except for the episodes with Q. If he was still on the sci-fi kick I'm sure Q would have been good for at least an album. (Oh, don't get out of sorts, you TNGers, it's humor ;). ) Oh, and while I'm at it, my apologies to Joey and the other Babylon 5ers for not mentioning it in the litany, but it's not officially classed as a Star Trek series, no matter how good it is. And since we seem to have a hard enough time getting it seen in the US, I seriously doubt Gary has had the chance to get himself embroiled in the greatest space serial to ever hit the airwaves. Okay, now for my pout face (right here =( ).Those of you in Europe get to have Gary as a VH1 featured artist? WAAAAH! After Elton John week or whatever we've most recently gone through we need a Numan week. Just remember how lucky you guys are. We struck up a conversation, and after earning his trust, he offered to sell me some original, unreleased Gary Numan songs--mostly early versions of songs that later made it to albums! I was pretty excited, as you can imagine. So I handed him my 50 quid and got a cassette, clearly a homemade sort of thing. Let me tell you, it taught me a lot about the creative process and how songs evolve. Anyway, here's the track listing: Are 'Friends' Eclectic? Still, I'll probably buy them, being= >the oppressed proletarian that I am :~ / Ain't anyone else amazed that the ultimate Radio Heart haters *HAVE* every single version of every single release? I know! They're trying to disinterest everyone else so they can buy it all for themselves! Yeah, that's gotta be it. But let's talk about money. Matthew, I have no idea what you do for a living, or even if you do work for a living. But I'm willing to bet that if you do work, you don't do it out of the goodness of your heart - nobody is that altruistic. You expect to be paid, and like most people you probably think you're underpaid. You may or may not be right. But it really rankles me when people say "well, so-and-so is just in it for the money". Has it not occurred to anybody that GARY NUMAN IS IN IT FOR THE MONEY as well? Moreover, he's not ashamed of it. He has said, and I quote, "I like money and I'm fortunate that I've got some of it." GASP! OH NO! The great hero of the proletariat admits to being... gasp.... a capitalist!!! Life sucks. Get a helmet. Gary voted for Maggie Thatcher's Conservatives because he *IS* a conservative, he feels that he should be compensated financially for performing his services and delivering his products to market. So do 99.99999% of the rest of us here on Planet Earth. The Record Label isn't pulling a Mother Teresa here and I never meant to imply that they were. But c'mon, Matthew... how much, exactly, do you expect this record label to earn from a limited-edition pressing of 2000 copies? Hmmm? This is UNQUESTIONABLY being done to satisfy a specific target audience, namely you and I (well, at least me), and they'll be lucky to sell out the run. In fact they're holding off production until/unless they get sufficient orders to be reasonably satisfied they'll at least break even on this. I would like to see them make at least a modest profit. Like me, they probably like to be paid for their work. If they really wanted to cash in, they'd be rereleasing the Radio Heart song that featured Elton John. :-) There's a man who's selling a lot of records lately... >at it's most sickly. Machine & Soul may be Gary's worst record (I'm not >sure) but it's light years ahead of Nicholson's efforts. = Touche. :-) Actually when I said that nasty thing about Machine + Soul, my tongue was planted firmly in cheek - I was merely echoing Gary's own views about that record and pointing out, through absurdity, that even the best of us can have an off day. :-) To steal a line from Martin Purvis' "Outland" web site, Gary Numan does have a criminal record... it's called "Machine + Soul". :-) You can laugh now. It's a joke. Get over it. :-) >From: av578@lafn.org (James Dawson) >>Listen Gary, if you >>really like SoCal, forget LA...head for Riverside....or Rialto....or San >>Diego. Even out here in the wilds of Western Canada (oops, forget I said that, ok? Don't wanna be provocative), BMG is a big, big, big player in the radio promotions game, and they've got sales reps *EVERYWHERE* pushing their product onto the airwaves. If Gary can get some of that, he's got a good chance at renewed success. What it's gonna boil down to is: 1) Will Gary get some of that? And if so, 2) Will "Exile" be good enough to get airplay? If yes to both, we got ourselves a winner. Unfortunately, only #2 was in Gary's hands and now it's no longer even there - it's off to the pressing plant. :-) >Oh, and by the way, I did see Gary drinking some kind of strong >cider at a hotel in Manchester the other year - so, he does drink >now & again it would seem. ;-) You sure about that? Subject: Squeegees in NYC and Hicksville To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all - I felt a response was necessary regarding James Dawson's comment about NY. I'm guessing that he actually meant NYC as the state itself is relatively large. He must get his information about NYC from television ( or some other equally reliable source ) as his statement is completely off the mark. Obviously, he hasn't strayed very far from his home in the last 10 years. He certainly has not been to NYC. If he had actually been there and driven a car in Manhattan, he would have seen as many window washers as he claims to have seen in L.A. - none. I live very close to Manhattan and go into the city 4 - 5 every week. I honestly cannot remember the last time I saw someone try to clean my car windows. It was actually made illegal some years ago. Not to say there aren't panhandlers at stop lights. I just happen to enjoy the city of NY very much and did not see the need for J.D. to make the reference that he made. Perhaps it's time for him to pay The Big Apple another visit. I would certainly recommend it. Sincerely, R.O. P.S. Hicksville is an actual place on Long Island, NY. P.P.S. If you mean that the BBC has started showing "The Simpsons" series from the beginning (that is, from the first episodes on), don't base your opinion on the early episodes. The first two seasons are AWFUL, with terrible animation and scripts that are no better than "live-action" American shitcoms...er, I mean "sitcoms." But along about season three or so the series got really good and has stayed that way -- funny, surrealistic, well-drawn and bizarre. I tried watching "The Simpsons" when it was first broadcast and absolutely hated it. When I was talked into giving it another try a couple of years later, I loved it -- and have watched every episode since. When episodes from those first two seasons are rerun, though, I immediately switch to something else. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Aug 1997 09:20:28 +0000 From: Stefano Meneghetti Subject: will Gary N. play around europe?
