I'm still filling in some of the gaps in my Numan collection and I've got "the bug" for Dramatis at the moment. After sifting through all the messages everyone sent me concerning Dramatis material, and a bit of research on my own through my own scrapbook archives, I've come up with a listing of all the Dramatis material that I'm aware of anyway. Here it is for your viewing pleasure: Albums: For Future Reference (TRAIN 18, Attic Records LAT-1136) NOTE: There are at least two versions of this album. The track listing is slightly different, but one version contains "Face On The Wall" and the other version contains "Human Sacrifice". No CD of this was ever released to my knowledge. 12" singles: Ex Luna Scientia/ Lady DJ (XPRES 53-12) Oh! 2025/ ?? (XPRES 61-12) No One Lives Forever (Remixed Long Version)/ snippets from "For Future Reference" including, Take Me Home, Turn, I Only Find Rewind, On Reflection, and Human Sacrifice (XPRES 63-12) Face On The Wall/ ?? (XPRES 69-12) The Shame (Dance Party Mix 1)/ I Only Find Rewind (XPRES 79-12) I Can See Her Now (Extended)/ One Step Ahead (XPRES 83) QUESTION: Can anyone provide me with what should be in place of the question marks above? 7" singles: Ex Luna Scientia/ Lady DJ (XPRES 53) Oh! 2025/ The Curtain (XPRES 61) No One Lives Forever (Remixed Long Version)/ snippets from "For Future Reference" including Turn, I Only Find Rewind, On Reflection, and Human Sacrifice (XPRES 63) Face On The Wall/ Pomp And Stomp And Stamp (XPRES 69) The Shame (Dance Party Mix 1)/ I Only Find Rewind (XPRES 79) I Can See Her Now (Extended)/ One Step Ahead (XPRES 83) Bootlegs: BBC In Concert circa 1982 (30 minute show containing their next single which never actually came out called "Sand And Stone") Well, that's it as far as my knowledge of Dramatis! BTW, if anyone has any of the above items and are willing to part with them, PLEASE drop me a line as I'm trying to fill in some of my Dramatis gaps at the moment! I have many Gary Numan bootlegs and assorted rarities to trade for such items. I will also buy some of the above Dramatis material with real money, if you'd like that even more than a trade ;-) Jeff Tolva (The Machman) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Oct 1997 22:55:23 -0400 From: Sean Francis Subject: Exile & The Unborn To: "Numan Digest (GN)" Folks, What formats will Exile be released on ? Will there be any special limit= ed editions available ? When will it be released around the world, specifically the US ? Why has NuWorld been quiet since October 1st ? For the avid collectors out there, you can get hold of new copies of The Unborn movie via the Internet. Check out this address = http://www.videoexpress.com/. The VHS tape is $80.33 (yes, eighty dollar= s and thirty three cents !). The laser disc is $33.02. = Hope that helps in case any of you were in need of this item. I can't sa= y I'm desperate to part with 80 bucks, especially as it's gonna cost me a fist full of pounds to have Exile shipped over to me on the 20th. Still,= there had to be some benefit of leaving my family behind in England. It'= s only now that I've realised what it is. Thanks Mum !!! New record deal I think that we should be pleased that Gary is able (with all the = adverse publicity over the years) to obtain a new record deal. It = pleases me that Gary stands a chance to open his music talents to a = wider audience than he current is able to.=20 I think all Numan fans should be pleased about this as it at least = guarantees two additional albums (after Exile) to be released and gives = him a shot at the big, big time again. The chance of seeing him on MTV, = VH-1 TOTP or any other TV program is a big plus and I for one look = forward to a video, I enjoy his music and want to see him whenever I = can. Reading the newsletter 52/53 this week it seems that the whole Numan = camp are pleased with the deal - I hope and pray that all goes well. = Gary has said in the newsletter that he feels slightly worried that the = delay to Exile has raised in the fans the level of expectancy in the = album and hopes that it lives up to these high expectations. After the = wav. files I cannot wait!!! 2. Past Relationships I must say that I have the vast majority of recordings that Gary has = been involved with in terms of other musical artists. I feel that some = are good (majority of Sharpe co-work) and some are not so good, but it = was still interesting to me. All Numan fans should listen to his = previous work, if they like it fine, if not fine - we are all different = ('Life of Brian' - I'm Not!) I have contacted The Record Label and added my name to the list - I may = not play the CD much but I want the option to play it. 3. Records I would like to know (if anyone does know) roughly what the values are = for the records below: Are Friends Electric - Picture disk 7 inch Down in the Park - 12 inch (with additional track) Original Bombers - 7 inch single I have to make sure that the insurance company are aware of the cost of = replacing these (other records - picture disks, different coloured = singles will not have changed much). 4. Tour I will be going to many of the tour dates this year but as I live in = Nottingham and the other venues will be a 'go and return asap mission' = anyone who wants to chat/meet - I would be happy to help (the gig at = Nottingham on the last tour was fantastic - and very crowded!) Subject: Numan Fan Base To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The digest has been full of posts ,stating that Gary has little chance of a large scale comeback . I agree ! The possibility of any artist ( including Oasis ) having even a top 20 single is a crapshoot at best ! But lets look at the impact of a very dynamic phenomenon...( the internet ) and how it may apply to Gary's career . 1. We have all seen posts by people ( many who say they are big fans ) who had no idea Gary was still around . 2. The fallout from this information forum has yet to be mesured by anyone . a) Derek , David , any stats on how many digest members have come and gone over the years ? b) Out of the numbers who left , how many were colledge students ? 1.Does this affect the number of fans leaving the digest because they are leaving college ( rendering them internet challenged ) ? 3. My main point, being that we have failed to take into consideration ,what impact the internet will have on Gary's career . My final statement : Exile will achive initial sales 20% greater than that of Sacrifice ! Slow growth is better than no growth ! The next album will do even better than Exile! The review text contained nothing very special, but there was added a (very old, 79/80) picture of Gary. The picture was overlapped with the bold text (translated): Attention! Gary Numan: Now good again! A few words can say more than a whole article :-) At the ending of the review it is mentioned that Gary finishes his autobiography and is starting a tour. By for now, Markus from Germany/Nuremberg P.S.: Hopefully we german Fans will get some information just in time, where Gary will be in Germany for the 3 days of Promotion!!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Oct 1997 11:00:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Broso@aol.com Subject: Review of EXILE To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi there, two days ago, a guy from Gary's german PR agency called me and asked me whether I would like to do an interview with Gary while he's on his promotion tour here in Germany. Well - to say the least I was really flattered and will meet him on 14th Oct for a 1/2 hour exclusive interview - I will try to put it in the web asap afterwards and tell you about it here. And today, the agency sent me preview-copy of Exile. So until now I've heard it 3-4 times. Here's a short review: 1. The Cover: Sorry, Gemma, or whoever is responsible for that. It's not very good. It contains of a grey (!) background with a somewhat distorted half-face photo of Gary (in dark grey). On the bottom left side theres a small "GARY NUMAN EXILE" in light grey (of course - if you flip through CD's in your record store it's the lower left side that you're looking at ....). In the center there is some kind of Klingon Weapon / Aliens Shape in greyish bordeaux red - and that's it. Maybe it's fashionable now or my taste is wrong but I didn't like it. 2. The Booklet. Same story here - the whole design is miles apart from the plain, cold sacrifice power.... 3. And now... the music. Hm. The whole record sounds like a less-inspired SACRIFICE and until now I didn't find an equivalent to Question of Faith or Love and Napalm. As one of the better songs, Dominion Day starts off with some nice crunched guitars but becomes predictable after a few seconds. I cannot tell you too much about each of the songs because they somehow sound the same. Well, am I disappointed? The answer is: No. Do I believe this is the record that will put Gary back on the map? The answer is: No. Overall internal Numan-Fan-since-1978-rating: OK (6 out of 10) (Sacrifice is 9, Machine & Soul 3). Now you can kill me if you want. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Oct 1997 23:24:51 +0100 From: "lordfox" Subject: SEX SEX SEX :-) To: "Gary Numan" Hi Ya Kids , Sean Said to some non Numanoids. > So, before you start slagging off Numan, get your facts straight. Oh, and as for the Tory crap mentioned here. >Fact One : he was misquoted, Sean did you see the World in Action Interview ? where Gary virtually licked (wrinkly old bat) Thatchers butt :-) ? > Fact Two : he did once vote Tory and was honest enough > to admit it Honest or not it branded him for life. I can still see him waving the Union Jack :-) money loads of money > Fact 3 : His favoured politician at the moment happens to be Tony > Blair. Surprise Surprise :-) Gary had to say that to offset previous damage. he's jumped on the popularity bandwagon :-( can't you see that ? I guess what I am trying to say Sean is there is little point in defending Gary on his past political statements. I understand what you were trying to achieve but you obviously didn't do your research.! :-( As a result your whole article is discredited. Shame cos it had some good points. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thanks to the two guys on this list who answered by James Freud query. Now I know I'm not going mad and imagined seing this album. Has anyone ever compiled a list of tunes which are not accredited to Numan, but only feature him (like the James Freud track)? I remember people like Bill Nelson being mentioned in the eighties as collaborating with Numan. Of course there are the obvious ones like Dramatis and Bill Sharpe, Radio Heart and Elton John, but the obscure ones I think might be a bit more interesting, especially for the die hard collectors out there. Oh, for the person who requested the Kraftwerk info., excellent choice I might add, you can join me and many others on the Kraftwerk mailing list, e:mail to kraftwerk@xmission.com. I understand that the Karlsrhue concert in Germany is now sold out, you might be able to get tickets through the list though. Check you all later. I am also looking forward to meeting Gary after the gig and getting some of my pictures signed by the man himself, not many artists spend ANYTIME willingly with their fans, but gary ALWAYS makes time.He makes us feel welcome every time. Walters" Subject: Why the negativity? To: Gary Numan Wow. I was somewhat shocked to see the negativity of the last digest. Maybe it's just "jitters" caused by the long delays with the release of "Exile." I don't know. But, why would it be so improbable for Gary to have a comeback now? Look at Aerosmith -- they practically self-destructed, then... all of a sudden they became all the rage: winning awards, being "the greatest" -- whatever. I think that Aerosmith has developed a formula and continues to crank out the same benign dribble over and over. The "Aerosmith sound." Like the "Van Halen sound" it's simple regurgitation. Find what works and stick with it. YUCK! I hope Gary doesn't resort to that in his quest to become famous again. I hope that he does become famous again, but I hope that it is merely a fad so he doesn't have to compromise to remain "in" because he will have to to remain that way. And the remarks about RUSH are typical -- "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand." As with Gary, the songs by RUSH that have become "popular" are not even remotely a sampling of their best work. But, also -- as with Gary -- RUSH continues to sell out nearly every concert to this very day. They must be doing something right -- RUSH and Gary as well. I read the remarks on the "Remind Me To Smile" website. I had to take a shower... it gives me the creeps when someone can believe so blindly. To put so much faith in writings in an old book that may or may not be prophecies of some "god." Sorry, but EVERY man (or woman) that is indeed human are subject to human error. There is NO WAY that any book written by "man" could possibly be "absolutely" the word of any god! The interpreter would -- "by nature" -- twist that very word to conform to their own perception. Humans hear what they want to hear. Humans are imperfect. Humans make mistakes. I, for one, could never, EVER, believe that ANY book is "gospel." As if! If it was written by another man's hand, it's twisted or distorted or simply an interpretation (or perception) by that person. Enough said (for now). Back to the negativity issue. I hope it's merely cold feet by some. In some little way, I have always hoped that Gary would NEVER become "in" again. I fear it will ruin everything. The very balance of nature could be at stake here. If Gary is put into the same category (Top 40) as the Spice Girls, or Hanson, or any of the other crap (LeAnn Rhimes on Mtv?! -- NOT AGAIN! Isn't there enough country... umm "music" channels out there for this SHIT?!). I would not hear Gary if he became Top 40... I don't listen to that shit. I do listen to "alternative" radio stations -- until something like Sugar Rays "Fly" comes on, or that "put your hands" fucking song. It's a damn good thing I'm not a postal employee! Ammunition is just too damn cheap! So, to clarify my ranting. I hope success for Gary, but not at the expense of his talent. And, I appreciate his honesty to himself to share his "beliefs" through his music. I don't have to agree to enjoy. Gary does not have the power to change my beliefs with his music. Sorry, I'm a little stronger than that. :) (I've wondered how atheists feel about Amy Grants music?) Man... I feel a lot better. Hope I didn't get any on you. :) -- Troy L.
