To: Numan@cs.uwp.edu Dear Fellow Numanoids, Well have your hard earned Pound's and dollars been waisted? Replicant6 seem's to think so but you can't please everyone can you? My little review is based on the first play so here goes. 1, DOMINION DAY, 9/10 Wow, Great start to the CD,powerfull with raunchy guitars and strong structure.I always wanted Numan to have more Heavy metal type guitars in his music and with this CD he is on his way.YAHOO! 2, PROPHECY 7/10 Pretty go but a bit quiet for the 2nd track but it does pick up. Strong lyrics superbly sung(as Usual) 3,DEAD HEAVEN 8/10 Another cracking track.Plenty to get your teeth into.Gary had better not take this CD to heaven when he pop's his clogg's! 4, DARK 8/10 A bit slow to start but grabs your intestinal track and gives it a good yank! 5,INNOCENCE BLEEDING 6/10 Bit slow this one and not as strong as others but hey they can't all be masterpieces. 6, THE ANGEL WARS 8/10 A real "STONKER",Great structure.Lyrics are a bit over the top though. 7,ABSOLUTION 7/10 A great song to listen too late at night. 8, AN ALIEN CURE 9/10 Great track. Makes very interesting listening.Gary is a cleaver sod! 9, EXILE 7/10 Bit slow but lyrics again are fab and they are sung superbly. Well there it is. A great CD and a good evolution from Sacrifice. The song's are stronger and a bit more alive. Gary has obviously spent a great deal of time in the studio making sure Exile sound's just right and the production is superb. The only fault is with the drum rhythem which is simmilar on each track. This was the same on Sacrifice but that is all i can fault it on. All together it is a great CD, one which Gary should be proud of producing but if God has heared the CD He will be going straight to hell! Thanx for taking the time to read this. Well, Ive listened through this album 2 or 3 times now, and I really really love it.. Overall its got that Sacrifice feel to it, but much darker. The drum loops are similar, but clearer and less repetitive (the 1 main shortcoming of Sacrifice) I would say that its been produced and mixed really well, although I still feel that the guitars should be louder, particularly on tracks such as Dominion Day, The Angel Wars, and Dead Heaven 1. Dominion Day An obvious single, and also an obvious opener for the shows (I AM looking forward to the back projections of war, murder and torture!) Nice crunchy guitar, but could be louder... "In his mercy he will make pain eternal" 2. Prophecy This was the opener from the Premier tour and is pretty much similar than what it was live. Good strong upfront beat, and quite sparse.. "The body of Christ is as black as his soul" 3. Dead Heaven I remember this from the V96 and Adrenalin Village gigs, but then it had a real loud Metallicaesque crunch guitar all the way through it. I was really looking forward to this and I still think its real good, one of the high points, but Gary - turn the guitar up!!!! Im sure live it will be a different story..The chorus does have echoes of Dominion Day though (or is it the other way around). "Thought I saw rain, black and cold falling on a child's grave Thought I saw an angel laugh and piss on it" 4. Dark Another one from the Premier tour. This is the one I remember most clearly, and was the benchmark I was hoping the rest of Exile would live up to. Its similar to the live version, and very anthemic...a fabulous middle 8 too! Another possible single. "Look down into the face of God" 5. Innocence Bleeding I wouldnt say this is great. Its not bad, but it does work as the middle song on the album. Maybe a little dirgy for me... "He lies to you and deceives" 6. The Angel Wars This I guess sums up the albums anti-god stance in one song. This will be a killer song live... "I'll drift into darkness and tear out the soul of God" 7. Absolution Why is this on here ? It sucked 2 or 3 years ago and it sucks now. This track sticks out like a sore thumb. It seems pretty irrelevant when compared to the rest of the album. Its just too....nice. (Then again, I am a Brit!) "I would swim across oceans just to be with you" 8. An Alien Cure Tops ! Loved this in 96. Again, the guitar could be bigger. Nice change of key from the verse to the chorus..Fab! "I took a virgin like Mary and said 'I give you the one' 9. Exile Well, this is one of the best tracks on here and a great closer. I'm not a great fan of Gary's slower stuff but this really works. The acoustic guitar in the chrous just makes it. After the whole album, hearing this just sums up the musical darkness in one song (this darkness thing is becoming a cliche already!!) Lyrically it sounds like a rewritten "Bleed" "You will kneel for me. Lose your eyes for me" On my scale (ie Machine and Soul is 1, and Sacrifice is 8) Exile is a clear 9. See all of you hopefully on the tour ! Andy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 1997 09:36:10 +0000 (GMT) From: Philip Lindsay Subject: Exile, funnily enough To: numan@cs.uwp.edu dear all I know this isn't unexpected, but here's just a few comments on Exile, which I got yesterday: Overall, storming album, the one that Sacrifice should have been. I did really like Sacrifice, but there was always a sneaking suspicion in the back of my mind that it wasn't as good as everyone thought it was. However, this album is. As Joey said, the drums are what they should have been in Sacrifice, really out front and much less, well, crap. Unfortunately, because of the fact that they're electronic, and also because the patterns are so similar, a lot of the songs sound alike. Not neccessarily a bad thing, 'cause they all sound great. It's just that I'm going to the last night of the tour with a complete non-numanoid, and I have to listen with the ears of the unconverted. I really hope that she isn't bored by it. The songs themselves: Dominion Day is another Question of Faith. I didn't think that QOF should have been a single, it didn't do Gary any favours, and I'm not sure that DD should be one either. Not enough variety. I like it a lot, but it isn't a single. Perhaps Dead Heaven? (Although the music papers would crucify it for it's somewhat crass lyrics). I agree with Joey (again!) about Innocence Bleeding - still not quite sure about it. In my experience sometimes it's the songs which don't leap out at you that last the longest. Dead Heaven makes the hair on my arms stand up now, but I'll probably play it to death and never listen to it again (I haven't listened to Sacrifice for a while now - 6 months constantly was too much!). I'll give it a chance and see. Dead Heaven is a great song. period. One thing though - I think Gary's lyrics are getting a little 'predictable'. They always were, but the religious stuff just makes me go 'yeah yeah, next'. Musically though, you can't fault this. Powerful driving rhythms and cool choruses. Absolution : hated it then, hate it now. Exile, on the other hand is absolutely brilliant. You think you've got the song sussed and then he brings in a beautiful little acoustic guitar strum which completely transforms the atmosphere. Wow. Great finish to the album. Afterwards I lay on my bed and thought : 'Cool, Nice one Gary.'. I'm really pleased that it's this good. Whether it'll be popular or not? who knows. Worth the wait? most certainly. Will I be playing it in 6 months time? Hmmmm, not sure. (I listen to Berserker and others more still). Do I wish that I'd bought more tickets for the Tour? Definitely! Glasgow, Southport, Manchester, Nottingham (should be an amazing gig, it was last time) and London last night. I'm not sure it's going to be enough, especially if it's going to be another 3 years before he tours again. maybe more to come when I get my thoughts together, Phil. P.S. I actually really like the cover presentation, and the doctored picture of Gary on the inside back cover of the insert is extremely cool. Sort of like a new version of 'The Scream'. Big boots too. Looks like Judge Dredd. Also, Gemma is listed as production assistant - what does this mean? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 19:24:15 -0000 From: Markus Dietrich Subject: EXILE arrived germany To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Hi Numanoids, got EXILE today (20.10) at WOM (World of Music) Nuremberg. So far the only store that got the album just in time. Other stores expect the CD at end of this or at the beginnig of the next week. WOM only ordered 7 pieces, although it is expected that in the November Journal of WOM, there will be an article or at least a comment of Exile! First of all, the Cover: My fear has been confirmed, because it is the cover with Gary's head shadowed in the GREY(urgghh) background! Why must Gary always put his face on the (front) cover? I rather had loved only a black background with the exile logo! But nevertheless very nice to hold it in my hands :-) My favourite songs are PROPHECY, DARK, ABSOLUTION (maybe because I get used to) and AN ALI=C8N CURE. All in all I find that the rythm of the EXILE songs is more dynamic and round (instead of in Sacrifice), which I prefer more. For a forthcoming single my vote is clear as nothing else to favour PROPHECY !!! The price for EXILE was 35DM, which is about 14 pounds or 20$. Hope to see Gary in the next issues of some german music magazines. I'm also missing the following singles which I'm interested in buying as well: 7" singles Face On The Wall / Pomp & Stomp & Stamp (XPRES 69) The Shame / I Only Find Rewind (XPRES 79) 12" singles Oh! 2025 / The Curtain (XPRES 6112) Face On The Wall / Pomp & Stomp & Stamp (XPRES 6912) If you'd like to sell me any of the above, please write to me! Although I went solely with the hope that they would do Poetry & Power, I held little hope that they actually would. They were part of a show with three other bands (Tonic, Goldfinger, and someone else of that ilk) and their set was only about 50 minutes. But, to my pleasant surprise, about the 5th song in, the lead singer says, "This is a song that we recorded for a Gary Numan tribute album...it's called Poetry & Power". Unfortunately, the crowd of 14 year olds had no idea what he was talking about, but hey...I got to see my first Numan song performed in concert. I have to admit, I haven't been a fan for long. I used to think that my "Cars" 45 was all I needed. One day, I woke up and thought, if I like both sides of this single so much, it must be time to get an album. I have been hooked for the past year. I publish a small magazine, Dialogue With Space and I collect records. I am also an avid film buff, with tastes that vary from early film history at the turn of the century to early french sound films from the 30s, into gangster films from the 50s, Hollywood's nihilist 70s to today's wannabe, rip off schlock. My tastes are as equally diverse in regards to music. From Asian 78s to New Zealand lathe cuts, I have a diverse record collection. I also collect fisher price little people. I am 31 years old, from (and still reside in)central Indiana, USA. I have been a fan of Numan since 1980, when I first heard "cars". I have collected many of his items over the years, to include Vinyl, CDs, photos, tapes, video, t-shirts, posters, store displays, and anything else related that I could find. I even went so far as to do the following. Upon Graduation from college in 1988, I made a trip of many firsts. I had met a fellow fan through a record collecting magazine, and was offered a place to stay should I ever make it to England. (His parents were just great, still keep in touch) I had decided to fly over to the U.K., and see Gary Numan LIVE! I caught the last two nights of the '88 tour in London. I also like Devo, whom other Numan fans may or may not care for. I often tell folks that my favorite band is Devo, my favorite artist is Numan. I also play guitar, keyboards(To some extent), Tenor sax, drums, and all the digital friends like drums machines, effects panels, etc., but really enjoy running the equipment in the recording studio, as I actually studied to become a record producer, but hey, life has its twists and turns. I also book shows, ran an under 21 club for a while, as well as a local underground newspaper while in college. At this point in life, I feel all too grown up. I do very little of the things I once enjoyed.
