David wishes me to write all of you here at this numan.cs thing (the digest, I hope) and inform you on the release of the website (?) he is working on, which must be Gary Numan related...It will not be released to you on time as he had planned, as on October 21 David was in a serious car accident (he was a passenger). Injuries are severe, but David is a real trooper and will come out of this all ok in the end with therapy and lots of love. I have made sure he has plenty of his Gary Numan cd's to listen to while he's in the hospital, and he hopes to be home real soon, although the specialists say at least another 2 weeks. The support was some trio who's name I can't remember. They played a selection on inoffensive instrumentals that would have been OK if it hadn't been for the dreadful drum loops. The three played keyboards, sax and drums although I do not know what the drummer was doing, as the only thing he hit that made any sound was the cymbals. Anyway they were on stage for about 30" and I think it important to listen to the support band as every one has to start some where. The light show was the now standard projector type moving lights (I am sure there is a proper name for them) that were on gantries. As usual he puts them to good use to help create the moods of the songs. I do think that a bit more movement from the lights would have helped on certain songs, in particular the up-tempo ones. A combination of white, blue, green, red and yellow colours were used along with some projectors projecting images of a similar vein to the cover of Exile. The merchandise and programs used the metallic Exile logo that can be found in the CD back cover, which I think, should have been on the CD front cover. The songs were all great and in fact I think this was one of the best shows Gary has ever put on. Every piece was superb and sounded outstanding. Here are some of the tracks he played. 1. Unusually he started with Down in the Park and it had a new intro that left me guessing what it was going to be. 2. Cars. 3. ARE. 4. Noise Noise 5. VOX. 6. Every day I die. With the proper long ending. 7. Films. 8. Dominion Day 9. Prophecy (I think) 10. Dead Heaven 11. Dark 12. Innocence Bleeding. 13. Absolution. 14. An Alien Cure 15. Exile I am sure that there were others but I was having such a brilliant time. I have to say that Absolution is now without doubt my favourite track of all time (until the next one) and played live was totally unbelievable. Also Dead Heaven was completely stunning live and I can’t wait for the live album. I have been very impressed with Exile and like every track on it without exception. This hasn't happened since Pleasure Principle. I just hope that enough new people get to hear it and give Gary the fame he so rightly deserves. What make me laugh (I include myself in this) is after the show every one goes home to their families in their 'sensible' cars. I thnik that we need some young blood in ot the fold. Anyway that is it. Take care, kind regards Stephen Catton. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 01:54:12 -0500 From: "Ruth ~ oktobriana@sprint.ca" Subject: Change of e mail address notice To: Gary Numan Hello, Just a short note to let GN Digest know of my new e mail address It is Oktobriana@sprint.ca ( formerly Oktobria@netaccess.on.ca ) I always enjoy reading the digest and keep up the good work guys !! Now, I have nothing against depressing music, or God (or deity of your choice), or fallen angels, however, a change of subject would be interesting. Along with a change of drumulators, tempo, and basic white noise. I'm not saying this disc is bad.....just mediocre. I can't see myself listening to this very often, apart from a couple of songs - Innocence Bleeding and Absolution (and I like the remix), more or less. Everything else just kinda faded into obscurity, nothing much stood out from the pack for me, although Ali likes Innocence Bleeding. I'll take Sacrifice any day over this, but then, I love Automatic (and am willing to buy any copy anyone might have on cd). It wasn't. Never was, in fact. According to Tony Webb, nobody yet knows when Exile will be released into "other territories". My guess, one that some other insiders seem to agree with, is that we'll see it in January, along with the (remixed) single release, and video, of "Dominion Day". Bear in mind that Eagle Records only came into existence a couple of months prior to Exile's release - they've gotta get their ducks all in a row. Oh, and the US release of Exile may come on another (BMG-affiliated) label as well. This has had one nasty side-effect in UK distribution. The original plan was for Pinnacle to handle distribution of Exile as a Numa Records release, as per usual. And thus lots of plans were made. Then all those plans had to be abruptly dumped while the album was re-listed as an Eagle Records release. Well, sometimes the paperwork doesn't catch up fast enough. The result is that many record stores have been telling buyers "well, according to our records, that album has been deleted". Sure, it was deleted... from PINNACLE'S distribution. If you run into this, tell 'em to check again, this time under Eagle Records. And if that don't work, try again in a few days. Eagle's been slow off the mark but given how young a company this is, I'm willing to forgive 'em, because the CD *HAS* been appearing on a lot of record-store shelves and it's been disappearing nearly as quickly (ie: it's selling). This slowness with listing the new version of the album likely also accounts for Exile's absence from CDNOW and CDCONNECTION, although if you keep checking you'll find it sooner or later. Or you can order it now from Badlands (hint hint - come see my site for details). === Jeff - The term "Gaz" or "Gazza" is not unique to Gary. It's a common British slang form of the name "Gary". In fact, it's properly (!!!) spelled "Gazzer", but comes across when a Brit says it as "Gazza" or, if he/she is feelin' lazy, just plain "Gaz". I have NO idea where this originates, but I do recall living in England when I was 8 or 9 and wondering why everyone called my cousin Gary "Gazza". Then he explained it to me. :-) I may be off-base on this, but as I recall, calling someone who's named Gary "Gazzer" is not only a slang form but is generally only used by friends/family - ie: if you're named Gary, you'll be called "Gazzer" only by your "mates" and family. So there's no need to feel the use of it (by British media) in reference to Gary is a bad thing. Quite the opposite. :-) /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / From: The Desk Of Joey Lindstrom +1 403-606-3853 / EMAIL: joey@lindstrom.com numanoid@ab.imag.net lindstrj@cadvision.com / WEBB: http://www.ab.imag.net/worldwidewebb/ /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- / "The universe holds many wonders: Be terrified and relieved that we have / not yet explained everything." / --Everything I Need To Know I Learned From Babylon 5 /-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 03:36:35 -0800 From: anastasios mistos Subject: I'M BACK EXILE IS A MASTERPEICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Anastasios Mistos Montreal, Que. Canada Hey Everyone, I love it, love it, love it!!!!!. This cd is a "refined, crispy clean, step further", of Sacrifice cd. When I first heard Sacrifice I rated 10/10. I thought Wow! Well my fellow friends, I can not even explain Exile. It really has blown me away!! and I'm not alone to think this way. Many friends of mine thought that this is really good. I played the cd without telling them its Gary Numan, and they loved the whole cd. The music, and his voice are enough to make people say Hmmmmmm!!! What is playing???? I just can't believe some of the critics rating this cd very low. I am surprised. What is it with them? Are they envious of Numan? That he has all these people enjoung his music? This man is A Fine Musician, and its about time "everyone pay" for all the nasty criticism they keep on giving him. For F**KS S*KES give this Musician the rating he deservesfor this cd!! 20/10!!!!!!!!. I honestly think he has produced a Masterpeice. The whole cd sounds amazing!! The Music and his Voice just takes you away to another planet. Some of the songs I fell in Love right away: 1. Exile 2. Dead Heaven 3. Innocence Bleeding 4. Absolution 5. An Alien Cure 6. Dominion Day 7. The Angel Wars 8. Prophecy 9. Dark You see ALL ALL ALL ALL OF THEM!!!!!!! THANK YOU GARY FOR PRODUCING ONE HELL OF A CD!!!( worth waiting for). I can not wait till Nov 9. I have two tickets for the last show of the tour. I am flying over with my friend, that is not a Numan fan, and not really crazy of his music. This will be his first experience to see what Numan is really all about!!! I will all let you now about the show and what my friend thought of his experience. If anybody else is going over to see the show and would like to get together before or after the show, send me an e-mail. What do you think are my chances of meeting Numan after the show? Is it possible? Last time I saw Numan in concert was on his Skin Mechanic Tour. I've been listening to Numan since 1982, courtesy of one Mr Paul Hegarty (sadly MIA - last seen in Kingston, London in 1988 on the last nights of the Exhibition tour). I've been in the GNFC since 1985, and my favourite GN studio albums at present are Exile (no surprise there I guess in this, its week of release here in the UK), Metal Rhythm, The Fury and Outland. Why isn't Sacrifice a favourite at the moment? Well, I've found that, as each new album comes out (with only 2 exceptions to date since '83), a curse descends on the last one, making it (temporarily) look dated and old - a sign to me of how much Gary changes between albums. Only when the Exile-follow-on (at this rate, probably to be called "Antichrist God Killer"?!) comes out will Sacrifice be seen by me in a fresh light. Am I alone in this? Surely not... Other favourite artists? Well, having had a new GN album this week, the next thing I'd like to see is something new by the Sisters of Mercy, or Stewart Copeland - more chance of the latter I think. Best non-GN gig I've ever been to was with Del Amitri. Having read the digest for a while now, I can appreciate how lucky we UK fans are to have GN playing live here. Well, I'm off to 3 nights of the tour this year. See some of you there... This is, of course, because Joey Lindstrom doesn't post the back issues in the Deadliner section of his World Wide Webb site as often as he used to, so it's all completely out of date by the time I read it. I won't criticise Joey for that though. I'm just jealous that he's got a life and so doesn't dedicate all his time to his website :-) For those who don't know me, I am Martin Purvis, the twisted mind behind Outland, the Site of Shite. (Or as a recent piece of hate mail described it "the worst site on the Web". I'm quite proud of receiving this nastygram, as it was the first flame I've ever been sent. However I feel I'm justified in discounting its contents because the sender claims to drive a Porsche. 'Nuff said). I won't write much here, because this is just the introductory note. I'll just say that I have been a Numan fan since Are Friends Electric, but I mostly lost touch after I emigrated from the UK to the infinitely superior land of Australia in 1988. I was able to buy the albums and some singles, but I was almost completely cut off from Numan news. Then I changed jobs, got onto the Internet, and I couldn't believe what I found. Numan, Numan and more Numan. And now I've joined the Digest to complete my transformation into a Numan Internet junkie. I'd also like to say that I think Exile is brilliant, and I'm extremely jealous of all those lucky bastards who are attending the tour. Does anyone know if a videotape is being made of the Exile tour? Not being able to attend the tours I can only see what they're like from the videos. I'm still pissed off that the video of the Premier Tour never appeared. That's it for now, Martin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------- "I'm in Outland, I'll take the piss out of anything" http://www.hutch.com.au/~purvism/outland.html Email : purvism@hutch.com.au mpurvis@hq.switch.net.au ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 97 16:19:00 PST From: Tina Freeman Subject: Some people :) To: digest A couple of days back I took my copy of exile to work to listen to on a personal CD player, The curiosity of my colleagues led to me touting exile to them and guess what ? No takers :( I got various responses from :- "Sounds like everything else he's done" to "Yuk!!! you listen to this?" This leads me to wonder whether as Numanoids we have biased views on Numan music but I somehow doubt that considering the amount of bickering that has gone on between us in the past. So that must mean that the rest of the world don't know good music when they hear it While on the subject I was chatting to a non internet numanoid who went to the Shepherds Bush gig... I collected my copy of the autobiography today, so if people are still having trouble getting one, you might like to try the following: Option 1 1) Call directory enquiries and ask for the number of 'Cranfield Bookshop' in Central Milton Keynes. 2) Call Cranfield Bookshop and order one 3) Pop in and collect it in a few days time (I'm not sure if they deliver, but theres no harm in asking). I ordered mine last monday, so it took them a week to get hold of it, which seems infinitely better than the weeks/months quoted by the WH Smiths of this world. Option 2 The bag it cam in refers to a co-operative of bookshops which offers a freefone number which is 0800 413357. I can't vouch for the reliability of option 2, but option one certainly did it for me. Hope this helps someone out there. No matter how hard it is to get Numan albums in the UK, it's going to = be harder being a Numan fan in the US (at least at the moment). BTW - you might not be surprised to hear that Our Price is owned by WH Smith. BTW again, Virgin & HMV aren't much better. 2. I could never live in any country where a certain State insists that school biology text books have warning labels about the theory (or rather= the accepted fact) of evolution because some three thousand year old stor= y said that man was created by God. 3. The standard of mathematics is much better in the UK. 4. Americans have no sense of irony. Philip Lindsay made a point about Glasgow audiences being better than elsewhere. I've heard it said before and I don't doubt it. I went to Southampton last night and the crowd were like cardboard cut-outs. There was a guy in front of me (about 6 feet from the front) who had his arms crossed and didn't move all night! It wasn't that he wasn't a fan, cos he= clapped as loud as anyone. So what's his problem??? For God's sake, if yo= u don't want to REALLY enjoy yourself, piss off to the back. Anyway, 5 or 6= of us DID have a good time. I too had a great time at Nottingham last year. I'm sure this year will b= e even better. Maybe they just don't have adrenalin glands in Southampton.
