I know they exist in 7" form, but I'm not quite sure if they exist in 12" form. If they do exist, please tell me the b-side(s) of them. And I NEED to know!! Please write to me directly, if you can positively confirm their existance in the 12" single format! Cheers, Jeff Tolva (The Machman) p.s. I just returned to the states from a 4 day jaunt with the Exile Tour. I was on the Numanoids on Tour Bus (sorry, "Coach"). Just wanted to say a couple of things: Few Brits I met were on the digest or had an Internet connection. I really wanted to put some faces with names and thank some people for keeping me up to date. Next year, maybe???? The Brits (and Israelites and Aussies and other Americans and Europeans) were excellent people. I will miss them....(till next year!!!!!) Gary told us that the next album will be heavier. He has really found another niche!!!! I met Gary, Gemma, John Webb, Mum (kissed me on the cheek!!!) and Dad, Grandma, Auntie, Mike Smith, and said hi to the band. Grandma was wearing the famous broche... Brad Day Atlanta, GA ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Nov 1997 17:49:00 -0500 From: Sean Francis Subject: EXILE Review To: "Numan Digest (GN)" Hey Everyone, Well, it finally arrived by international courier at my office on Monday.= = I picked up said package and drove at top speed (Houston traffic allowing= ) back to my apartment. In no time, the headphones were on, the volume was cranked and I sat and waited for it all to begin.... Track by Track Review. Dominion Day. A strong opening. Heavy guitar providing the wall of sound. Like most of the tracks, this has such a dense sound to it, it's so multi-dimensional.= Fast and furious with a pretty catchy chorus. Nice use of soft vocal/hard= vocal too. However, I think there are better choices for the single. = I think that heavy guitar based tracks have to be sufficiently different = to everyone else's heavy guitar based tracks in order to stand out from the crowd. So many 'guitar' bands sound alike, but the really successful ones= do something slightly more interesting with that instrument which capture= s your attention when you hear something by them. I really like this track= because it's by Numan. I'm sure that if this were by someone else then I'= d be thinking "Yeah, whatever. Someone put some Soundgarden on please". The= single is SO important to Gary's career. I don't think that this song is different enough to get the attention of the record buying public that wouldn't normally buy a Numan record, but would buy a heavy guitar based song . The fact that it will be remixed by Gravity Kills does not inspire= me with confidence. I've seen GK live and remember only 2 things. Loud thrashy guitars and shouted lyrics. They were support (along with Stabbin= g Westward) to The Sex Pistols here in Houston last year. When the Pistols came on they completely blew away both support acts. Now, what does that tell you ? Now, don't get me wrong I'm not saying that GK are talentless= =2E However, I have a guitar, a distortion box and I can shout too (I just wi= sh I could get paid for it like some people can). What I don't have is anything like the genius that created "Dark" for example. Gary, you don'= t need GK remixing your stuff. Just release "Dark" or "The Angel Wars" exactly as they are, exactly as you wanted them to sound. Prophecy. This is quite sinister. Some really nice synth effects which build up a gripping atmosphere. As with most of the other tracks, there's a lot goin= g on in the mix. Killer track. Dead Heaven. I guess the most synth based track with an excellent intro and chorus backing. It has that sparse echoy piano used to good effect on Sacrifice.= This I think is definite single material. = Dark. The percussion on this is amazing. The vocal performance is exceptional. Starts off really quiet then the chorus really rips. The lyrics are so clever too. The grungy guitar behind the second verse gives this track a strong rock feel to it and then there's that chorus again. I think this i= s one of Gary's best songs ever. Definite single material. Innocence Bleeding. After 4 strong and powerful tracks this song provides a welcome change of= pace. A slow song with some pretty keyboard. Again, for those of you who haven't heard Exile yet, don't go looking for any synth anthems, ala The Pleasure Principle. There aren't any. The keyboard is more atmospheric th= an in yer face. = The Angel Wars. This is awesome. After I'd played Exile all the way thru, this is the tra= ck I went back to first. It's the backing vocals that do it for me. "Oh Lord= ", "Father", "Jesus" almost half whispered. Wow. This and "Dark" are the 2 tracks that send shivers up the parts other music can't reach. It's got single written all over it. My only complaint would be that nothing happens between the second and third chorus. Gary just leaves the machine= s running for a while then comes back in again for the last chorus. Odd. Maybe it's artistic license to give some space and so emphasise the choru= s itself. But what do I know ? I'd just rather some ripping synth in there,= just for old time's sake ! Absolution. I have several problems with this track. I don't like it to start with. I= can't stand "lovey dovey" songs by anyone - all that dewey eyed, clutchin= g your chest, heart stopping whenever she enters the room crap - yeah yeah yeah, been there, bought the T-shirt and got screwed over in the process (not that I'm bitter or anything ). It pains me to hear my fave arti= st going on and on about such things. I preferred it when he sung about how horrible love is, ala "This Is Love", "I Still Remember", "Whisper", "The= Seed of a Lie". Much better and statistically on safer ground. After all,= this love thing goes wrong more times than it doesn't. I rest my case you= r Honour . Anyway, this song doesn't fit in with the rest and it's years= old already. We wait 3 years for a new album and when it arrives 11% of i= t is recycled old material. Hmm. There's been a lot of talk about every alb= um having a weak track (or 2). This is it for me. Everything else on "Exile"= is so much better. An Alien Cure. Another killer track. Nice change of pace towards the end when it goes al= l pianoy (ala "Sacrifice"). Compared to some of the other tracks, a filler track I think. Exile. There's always been a lot of critisism of Gary's vocal range. I don't kno= w why really, I think he's up to the job. Just take a listen to "Crash" off= "Dance". High or what ? This song has his usual ballady soft vocal combin= ed with some very low notes. Really good vocals on this. Really effective keyboards. After the thunder storm of an album, a fitting way to close yo= ur account on the whole affair. Slow, moody and (almost) gentle on the ear. = Quite wonderful. So, there you have it. "Exile" is much better than "Sacrifice". The songs= are stronger, the arrangements more interesting and diverse. The drum loo= ps work really well this time and it's played rather well too. Gary should b= e rightfully pleased with this as should us fans. That's my opinion on "Exile". I can't wait for the next album. Let's hope= it's not another 3 years in the making. But on that note it was also said that before that date that the U.S. and rest of the world release date would be forthcoming. Which hasn't happened. My beef is I am going to have to either wait till it comes out as a U.S. release next year or pay the higher import cost now. The sun had set and people dressed in black were converging on a little concert hall in the depths of Surrey. Who was playing there? Judging by the clothes the audience could have come to see The Damned on the wrong night but NO they had come to see someone far greater. As the light's dimmed and the crowd cheared, dribble was cascading down my chin in anticipation.Oooooh, wierd sounds were coming from the speakers and all of a sudden BANG.....Down in the park blasted from the speaker stack. There he was in all his glory (No girls, he was not naked!!)Wearing black leather jeans, A groovy black velvet shirt and some amazing patent leather boots. Dominion Day soon followed and the crowd went NUT'S! He performed most if not all of Exile which sounded fabtabulous. He did a superb version of Films which was i think the same as on the Dream Corrosion CD. I was enjoying myself too much to take note of the track listing. The guitars were very raunchy and in yer face and the synths on "cars" were ear shattering. Musically it was probably the best Tour he has ever done. The musitions were tighter than a gnat's chuff and the lighting crew were on form once again. The light show was great as usual, something Gary pay's much attention too. A great evening was had by all, Even Gary's Gran who he waved to during the show! All i have to do now is convince the wife to let me go to London on the 9th nov. I have heared Exile a good many times now and i have to say that this Cd is superb. My fave apart from Telekon. To: "Gary Numan" I just got back to Washington DC from my trip to the UK and finally got to listen to 'Exile' on a proper stereo. (I had a tape made on a crappy tape deck at the youth hostel, so at least I knew the songs before the show) This is a great sounding album. The drums are as repeatitive as everyone says, but drums have been his weakpoint since 'The Fury'. The live shows were great, with Guifdford being better than Shepard's Bush. The sound was better, the vocals were louder and Gary seemed to be enjoying it more. The biggest annoyance was the fans insistance on singing every song so that you couldn't hear Gary. I don't want to be a killjoy, but I did come to hear him, not the fans. Anyway, he sounded great. One of my favorite parts of the show was when after he was done singing Cars, he just sat down and had a drink of water while the band played. Brilliant! The guitarist did a great job of playing the songs without overplaying them like Kipper. No fret wanking! Whomever has the opportunity should go to a concert. He's playing intimate venues and the show is great. Particularly, as Mike said, the penultimate one.= At the moment Sacrifice remains a fine album IMO but has been put in the shade by Exile. A similar thing happened to Berserker when The Fury came out, but it's now one of my favourite albums again. Anyone who can dismiss an album immediately and for all time (Machine & Soul??) is either very lucky or very foolish. And, of course, there's no such thing as luck :-) The tour started off rather strangely in Southampton. It seems the venue had brought in a truck load of cardboard cut-outs to make up the audience= numbers....or maybe they were just dumbstruck by my girlfriends outfit? = However things are rapidly getting better. At the time of writing, we've also been to London, Bristol, Guildford and Cambridge. The audiences are getting louder, Gary is smiling more and The Angel Wars is getting more like The Angel Wars (the first night, it sounded like Scar...strange!). Tina Freeman I like your style. Now if only Gary would drop Cars and AFE,= I'd be in heaven - metaphorically of course... the only way :-) Did somebody slag Earl Brutus off in a recent digest? Mmmm?... well, they're not Gary Numan so I guess they deserve everything they get?? Glad to see Vox printed my letter responding to their review of Exile - a= nd with hardly any alterations too! It was the best thing in December's issu= e if I do say so myself :-) Interesting advert for Exile in the tour programme..."What if heaven and hell are one and the same place and it is only our perception that makes = it seem like one or the other?".
