To: Numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi Fellow Members; I just got the Exile CD and Tape in the mail yesterday ( I am an American). Yes, I orderd my copies from the UK because I just could not wait! Anyway, I have followed Numan since 1979 and I have everything the man has recorded including the elusive "Photograph" LP. So, my comments on Exile are coming from a true fan. I am also a musician so perhaps my comments and opinions may be considerably different than many of you on this list. EXILE: Gary Numan's return to popular music, acceptance, Top 40 Radio, Alternative Radio, so on and so forth,,,,,,,,,EXILE "THE Comeback Album?" The packaging, liner notes, layout appearance and image of this CD are the best I have seen since perhaps Replica's or Berserker. By far, the most polished product Gary has put out. Much better than the IRS years! The MUSIC!!! Dominion Day: Hey, not bad, but let's face it, this just isn't single material. Not the song to "Break" Gary again. It just doesn't have what it takes to get radio airplay. God I hope Eagle has the sense to read what us fans are saying about the single of choice. It's pretty standard Numan formula stuff still a good tune though! Prophecy: Was this the last song Gary wrote for the album. It kinda lacks thought and iumagination. Pretty standard rambling from my hero. No hooks, no great musical passage. Boring. Dead Heaven: Jesus!!! Gary has a single. If you need a song that grabs your attention, gives you a melody to humm along with and has the "Stuff" to get noticed, I think this song is his best shot! I think this song is radio ready. I love it!!! Too bad the lyrics are a bit over the top. If I was Eagle, I would release this as a single. Dark: Classic Numan here. No single though. Nice melody, musically, the instrumentation is getting very samey. I've heard this all before. Innocence Bleeding: I am getting Bored AGAIN. Heard it all before Gary! The Angel Wars: OH my! A follow up single to Dead Heaven. Good song, the second best on the album! It has a memorable hook line, danceable, radio friendly. Again the lyrics may be a bit over the top. I like this one!!! Absolution: Nice additions to the song since it was last released. It's a good filler song. This one can grow one you. Not a single though! An Alien Cure: Pretty good tune. Just doesn't hit! Exile: Bloody bored again. Jesus Gary! I am a fan and even I am getting bored! The albums closer is the worst track on the record I think. Well you can't win em all. OK All in all. I rate it the same as Sacrifice. I really like two or three songs. Another two or three are OK. And the rest I can just do without. The artwork is very good both outside and in. I like the demonic Gary in the center picture. What is with those goofy looking boots at the back inside picture?!? I am still convinced that the logo is a demonic angel icon _particularly_ after hearing the lyrics. Nothing to do with Vorlons.... Listening to the CD I have to admit (begrudgingly) that I did not get as much of a rush from it as I did from listening to 'Sacrafice' the first time. With 'Sacrafice' I immediately fell in love thinking 'This is what I have been waiting for!'. With 'Exile' there was some mild disappointment. Don't get me wrong; it's a great CD and will dominate my CD player for the next few months. But the songs are just too simillar to each other, and the effects no Gary's voice mute him far too much (I like his voice, I want to hear it clearly). And there were no really fast tracks; like 'A Question of Faith'; 'Dead Heaven' is as fast as it gets and is really the only track that is really different from others. This is a much slower CD than Sacrafice.... Lyrically he is excellent. Not a hint of the 'I like this; don't like that' nonsense he was stuck on for a while; this is great stuff. I couldn't help but think --while reading the lyrics --that this would make an excellent book or movie. The more I listen the more I like it; but it didn't immediately grab me like some of his earlier releases. I'll give it 9 of 10 compared to other music I like, and a 8 of 10 compared to his other work. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Nov 1997 19:19:09 -0800 From: vickers Subject: Last Thursday's Digest To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Dear Dave, Please could you remail me the last Digest? Im planning to record the London gig on Sunday night on digital cassette, so I'm willing to trade Sunday should be good - especially that Posh are supporting - I talked to the singer from Posh at the Reading Festival this year and told her that I was disapointed she didnt play "She's got claws" She said that she was very happy with the song but she didnt know the words. I told her that didnt stop them when they recorded it for Random, and she said "Yeah - Im sure he doesnt sing 'This house is vertical' Anyways - see y'all on sunday - Matt, Phil, Jon, and Karen (even though shes no longer on ) Ill meet you in the pub next to the venue at, say, 630 ? And finally, BIG Hi's to David and Shane! *********************************** * * Due to my email fouling up, * you cant directly reply to this * message. * * To reply, please enter my email * address manually. There's a picture from '82 in connection with his air crash. The caption mentions a "Numan senior," whoever that is. There's a sorry review of "Exile" and there's an entry in connection with the tour, which is pretty neutral and goes on about Gary not liking dance music. But there are three pictures of Numan. All this says to me is that it doesn't matter how long Gary has been a creator of sounds and a performer of sounds, the music press still like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and even Al Stewart better because it's easier and it's just as easy to slag Numan. Either the '60s and the '70s rock or cheap simulacras like Oasis get tons of respect in music rags. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 10:45:15 +0100 (BST) From: Jon Garland Subject: Rock City gig To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The Rock City gig was absolutely ace - it's a great venue, small & atmospheric, & it was packed. Gary seemed to be really enjoying himself, and looked quite moved by the fantastic reaction he got from the crowd. Highlights were Dominion Day, Dark, Bleed & Jo the Waiter. It was heartening to see a large number of under 25s there too - I went to the Manchester Apollo gig & was a bit shocked by the ancient age of the very stilted crowd. Rock City was much more like it - utterly superb! Jon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 13:48:08 +0000 From: "Julian Ashcroft" Subject: Southport Show To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Philip Lindsay wrote in the last Digest that he thought the Southport show was at a bad venue and the crowd was not great. This was my first time at Southport, both the town and the theatre. A group of us had travelled over from the Isle of Man (get your Atlas out) for a long weekend, we didn't arrive in Southport until Saturday night and we found the venue very easily. Having been to Hammersmith for the last three or four years, I would say that Southport theatre was much classier and more up market. There was a good crowd waiting in the foyer and the drinks were a lot cheaper than in London. I don't know how many the place held but it was pretty full. We watched the support band 'Playhouse' mainly beacause we wanted to sit down. They are a local Liverpool Band and like most gigging bands, they seem to let the music drown out the vocals. Just after 9pm, after having to watch some terrible local adverts projected on the safety curtain, the lights went out. I am always amazed that the band don't trip up when they walk onto stage in almost total blackness. I am not going to give a run down on the songs played as I can't remember and there seems to have been plenty of lists shown already on the Digest. The quality of the sound production was pretty good, the vocals from Gary were good and strong, the lighting was brilliant, Gary has now got his posing down to a fine art (thats a compliment by the way) The fans were very noisy and were really enjoying themself. Overall a great night. By the way I also stood still most of the time and I had my arms folded, we don't all need to dance about to enjoy ourselves. I clapped a whistled after each song had finished, but when each song was being performed I wanted to watch and hear what was going on. Got 'Praying to the Aliens' the other day while we were in England, we tried booshops in Liverpool and Warrington with no luck and eventually found it in 'Waterstones' in Lancaster, they had about four copies in stock. I must admit it was not what I expected, I thought it was going to be more pictures than writing. There are hardly any pictures and only a couple I haven't seen before. The book is a very good read (half way through it now). I hope Gary finishes the novel he is mean't to be writing because on the basis of his autobiography, he has the makings of an excellent writer.
