Numan Records Stuff Thanks for starting my subscription What of Numa has Eagle purchased to distribute? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 1997 08:29 -0700 (MST) From: "Stephen.Austra-beck" Subject: << Exile >> To: numan digest I'm delighted 'Exile' is receiving some welcome and due favorable press in the UK. Congratulations Gary. The album was definitely worth waiting for. The revised mix of 'Absolute' is a real treat, the original is one of his best songs ever I believe. It was interesting to read some of Gary's comments about his "limited singing range"; well he more than compensates with a very distinct style. To me, his singing has always reminded me of liquid. The content of 'Exile' is dark. I am a "keen Christian" as someone this week put it. I still take no contention against this album. I think the perspective should be maintained, that although whatever Gary referenced for inspiration (why does the film 'The Prophecy' come to mind?), and udeniably there is a certain amount of Gary personally in the music, but largely I keep the perspective this is also somewhat fictional and I'm looking for the story. 'Exile' and 'Sacrafice' seem to be about a particular character, an extension of Gary somewhat. I'll admit both these albums did frighten me somewhat, not because I objected to anything because I didn't. I think Cindytalk's Gordon Sharp should reference 'Exile'. I, like many, grew up listening to Gary since the beginning. His music is a part of my life. Like other artists, I like to look at the over all picture, the evolvement, and that's how I evaluate 'Exile'. I hear his entire career in the album. I want to convey my appreciation for Numan Digest, NuWorld, and all the other Numan dedicated sites. For years, I thought I was the only person on the planet that listened to Numan. It's been nice the last few years to read about others who share the same passion and appreciation for this man and his music. Best wishes to Gary and the resurgence of his popularity, and to each of you out there as well. I, for example, would never have thought of using ska (BIS) or rap (Underdog) in a Numan song, never mind the "Queen does Gary Numan" version of M.E. (Earl Brutus). Faaaaaantastic! :-D Has anyone heard anything else by Moloko? From what I've read online they're an acid jazz group, but I don't know if that's in the British sense (Jamiroquai, go figure) or American sense (DJ Krush). Their version of AFE is reminiscent of 4 Non Blondes doing that Led Zep song (it's on Encomium, I think)...kinda sorta. After sending my mother a copy of Random, she has "stolen" all my Numan cd's from my bedroom bookcase , She now considers herself a Numanoid (she's just liked him a lot before) and is seriously thinking of coming over to the UK for the next tour! I can just see my mom rockin' out at a concert, that would be awesome. Someone mentioned seeing a lot of young faces at one of the English concerts. and I have to add that I saw some *really* young faces at the Glasgow gig - we're talking 9 to 12 years old! There was on very cute kid all dressed in black leather. Start 'em in the womb I say. ;-) Clea ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 1997 11:45:09 +0100 From: DE VISSCHER Luc Subject: Belgian review - Exile Tour - Shepherd's Bush Nov. 9 To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" I've missed a couple of digests, so here are some comments of the past 4: Somebody wrote: "My current play-to-death album is Salvation by Alphaville". Well, Si, welcome to the club. This was mine too. It is Exile now, but I regularly go back to Salvation because it has more variety. I know that there are other Alphavillians out there who are on both Numan and AV mailing lists (Hi Brad from Atlanta, you're also one of them!). Just to tell you that in my "all time favorite albums", just behind "Dance" is "Prostitute by Alphaville. Great album. For the guy standing still at the concert, welcome to the club. I don't move very much either, though I do have a lot of fun. And yes, I clap and cheer, but I'm not dancing. I don't mind other people going berserk, but my way of enjoying is just different. I respect you, please respect me. And someone (Matthew?) said Gary should drop Cars and AFE from the setlist. I agree partially. Cars was dropped for a couple of tours, but somehow I was pleased it came back. But AFE can NEVER be dropped. It's the Numan Anthem! It's THE song that keeps us all together. No, sorry, I can't agree. It still is the song I'm waiting for... Then Leon mentioned he saw Gary "only" 36 times live and he says he's an amateur. Well I believe I'm a hardcore fan, but I only saw Gary live about 20/25 times (of which twice in Brussels, his birthday concert in The Flag in '88, Wembley '81 and from all tours since "Warriors", at least one concert). But offc course, for each concert I have to travel from Brussels to London, so... I have met Gary 4 times, last time on Oct. 16 in Brussels where we had the chance to talk to him for 45', and I had the golden opportunity to drive him and Gemma off to the airport, believe it or not! Now for the tour. I arrived at Shepherd's Bush at 6Pm and was very surprised about the amount of people. I used to go to Hammersmith (MUCH BETTER VENUE BY THE WAY!!!), where people turned up only half an hour before the show. Met Beryl at the stage door at 6:30 so that I could pay the tickets and talk for a while (later on she sneaked us into Gary's hotel). The show was great, only the first 2/3 songs I thought the sound of Gary's voice was awful. I mean, I know the lyrics of Dominion day, but I really couldn't make out what he was singing. Luckily, later on the balance was OK. My favorite was Metal, but also enjoyed very much Voix (great to hear another song from Metal Rhythm, one of the best albums), We are so fragile, Everyday I die, AFE. Thought the ballads were misplaced, and I didn't like at all the new "Friends". Overall, my quotation is the same as for Exile: Numan can do better. Interesting guest at the venue was John FOXX and Louis GORDON, whom I met later in the bar of Gary's hotel for a chat. Strange that so few Numanoids didn't recognize the man. FOXX seemed to have a lot of fun, and particularly enjoyed Metal. (also Cars and AFE). He follows Gary's career from far and still would like to do "something" with him. But apparently, it turns out to be quite difficult to meet. Also heard the rumor (even more than a rumor) from Peter Gilbert and Gary that he will do a tour in Germany and... BELGIUM. Isn't that great? Especially since the Emotion Tour in Belgium wasn't that good actually. I've already threatened all my friends that if they don't come... I'll buy them the ticket! Take care! >Luc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 1997 08:25:59 -0700 From: Jim Storie Subject: email Address Change To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Please change your emai address for me to recieve the newsletter. new address is; hmn4numn@aol.com Jimi I Dream of Wires ......... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 22:02:05 -0800 (PST) From: Derek Langsford Subject: First impression of Exile To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well, getting Exile has not been easy here in San Diego. Compared to the time it took to get Human or Sacrifice, it's been a nightmare. I ended up getting a mail order copy from Virgin in Burbank and being royally screwed out of $34 for it with the postage etc. Sigh. I should have advance ordered it from the UK direct. Seems like the label change has been causing major problems outside the UK as well. I have had it for almost a week and feel I can make a few comments on my impression so far. Perhaps the build-up and wait raised expectations to high but I cannot bring myself to agree with others who think this is Gary's best album ever. It's good but not great. Well ahead of M&S, Outland etc. but not as good as Sacrifice and some of his early albums. Call me a heretic if you so wish :-) The album is consistently good - no dogs again - but no songs reach the heights of Seed of a Lie, Scar or Love and Napalm, even Bleed which someone last week rated it the same as the utterly awful Dark Sunday, Poison and The Need. Stand out tracks for me are Dead Heaven, Angel Wars and Exile. I think either of the first two would make better singles than Dominion Day which seems too much standard Numan fare to get attention. I don't get the impression this albums songs are as well crafted as those on Sacrifice. Production is much better than Sacrifice. I can only imagine what Sac would have been with cleaner production. Why do I not find is totally fantastic? The piano and acoustic guitar in Prophecy and Exile are refreshing additions to a very mechanical album. I would like to hear real drums and a bass to add depth and to break up those rhythms. Gary tends to let the program just run all the way through without varying anything apart from intensity of the sounds. A human element might add interest to the arrangements. Many songs start out with some random keyboard noodlings presumably from Mike Smith. Sounds like they have been lifted from Human (or that's the only way Smith can play). I don't find they add anything to the songs - they seem to be things stuck in front to soften the blow of the programmed percussion coming in. Some of the chord changes seem derivative of corny horror movie soundtracks. Rather than sounding dark, they almost seem funny. Lyrically this is Gary's most cohesive album yet, but might it be too repetitive? I trust the next album will have different and more varied subject matter. I will see if my perspective changes. I am playing the album repeatedly and it goes through my head most of the time - a positive sign. I expect to have a full review ready sometime in the future. When I said "Since I am a musician, my opinions may be different than many others opinions on this digest", I simply meant, I look at music differently than non musicians. I didn't want people to think I was casting a negitive vibe on Exile. By reading my review of it, as a musician, I said that the better half of Exile, MUSICALLY, was boring, simplistic and bland . But note, simply my opinion! A musicians opinion! Not better, not worse, and certainly not worth "HAILING" to. OK? I am sorry if you were so taken in ANDY, please,,,,don't bow down or hail to me to me! That's not what I am after! Please............ Therefore haven't bought an item! - Met a spanish guy at the youth-hostel and after telling him about the reason of my visit, he wants to come along to Gary's Show at the evening! - As I passes Tower Records my mouth was standing open! There was a shopping-window fully filled with a enormous EXILE cover. In front of it there hangs the EXILE logo for a real 3 dimensional effect. Therefore I requested anyone on the street to make a picture from me beside the shopping-window! See next at NuWays!!! - Concert: * Sheperds Bush Empire was much times smaller than the Hammersmith Odeon/Labatts Apollo and I believe that not all fans who want got a ticket (also the spanish guy above got it). * Immediately got a tour shirt and weared it on (replaced the premier). * For me the sounding of the concert was very poor. Also the light-show was very mere and uninspired. I have seen the Outland-, Premier- and now Exile-Tour. But Outland was the best, and Exile the worst, sorry. BUT as always in London, the fans were fantastic. * I missed PROPHECY, one of the best EXILE song (for me) * Best song of the concert was EVERYDAY I DIE * Nice joke with the horse, but I don't think Gary was too keen on! Just good that no video recording here. * Met one guy from the USA, and two from Belgium. * Direct after the concert at the stage there was GEMMA with some other glamour girls (Kenicki???), and then Ade Orange, but I don't tried to talk to them, maybe too shy. But the american guy talked with Ade, and got the inofficial information at with hotel Gary and the band will stay at night :-) * always failed to find some german fans (which surely were there) * After the show I waited nearly two hours before the venue trying to met Gary one time in my live. Many fans went home when they got it's singned stuff back from inside, but I wanted to stay as long as necessary. And then it happens, with a little delay after the band members and Gemma, then GARY NUMAN comes out of the building. Immediately the hardcore rest of the fans (about 10 guys) caught him. It was sooooo exciting, and after a short delay I managed to shake Gary's hands and told him that I had dedicated him a german website called NuWays. After making a photo of Gary and another fan, this fan did the same for me (see soon on NuWays :-), I only believe it if the photo is showing the evidence). Then Gary runs to the tour-bus where the crew was already in, and I shyly asked if it is posible for the Nuways- author to join his after show party. Don't know if Gary has heard my words - anyway he disappeared in the bus ;-| Then also I went back to the youth-hostel. - Also I tried to get still a copy of the biography, it failed (all 3 items were sold at Tower Records) - I saw a british magazin called "FUTURE MUSIC" with a several page story about Gary, his Music and his use of Synthesizer (you know - the story of analog/digital synthys, where Gary always sneers about the old analogs). Very interesting is the included CD ROM, which included an Video of Gary at his studio for PC or MAC computers, and some songs of RANDOM. On the front of the CD stands "The New Old Numan" -> check it out! - All in all: I want never miss to visit Gary's London Concerts!!! Cars was the big song that year and I couldn't get enough of it, I was 15 at the time. As the years went by I enjoyed his music more and more. Here in Canada it's still hard to find Gary recordings in the small towns. The lastest release was the best of Gary Numan & Tubeway Army compilation. One thing that bothers me is the lack of new material being offered in this area of the world. Compilations abound (The best of..., Greatest..., The very best... etc.), not much new filters this way. I've found some imports, but not nearly as many as I'd hoped over the years. As compact discs have taken the forefront this has gotten worse, Ep's and record albums could be found. Well enough rambling and complaints. Gary Numan is my all time favorate recording artist and few have come close in all around quality. A few of my other top ten groups and performers are: Alice Cooper. DEVO, Kraftwerk and Adam Ant (Adam & the Ants). My musical preferances are: Heavy (Thrash Metal), punk, classical and electronics. My musical dislikes are: (C)rap, Opera, Country (old or new) and Ethnic. Note: the random album in the most part "SUCKS". My favorite Numan song is BLUE EYES. Thanks for putting me on the list, it's nice to know I'm not alone!
