I am joining the throng to say that I very much enjoyed the CD. Picked one up this weekend in Vancouver to listen to on my drive back to Seattle. The hip Seattle stores didn't have it, but it was in quite a few places in Vancouver. I agree with other comments that the loops are much better done than on Sacrifice. I was really beginning to wish that Gary would use some different vocals effects, however. By and large, it is the same level in the mix and the same delay effect for all the tracks. Someone had remarked earlier that all the tracks sounded like the same song. I think that this is the major reason. Otherwise, I found the drums, guitar and keyboard to be quite distinct. But when you have four or five songs with Gary singing "way-- oh ohhhhhhh. Whayyyyy oheee ohhhhhh" with the same level of reverb it's going to sound fairly similar. I didn't find the messages to be as dark or anti-religious as everyone said. I do, however, wish that I had a quarter for all the Numan songs where he says, "I don't...." :) Gary, I would be very interested in loaning you my different effects arrays. I think there are many many ways to present your distinctive voice and style. Stretch out! To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Yes, MORE Exile! :-) Hi everyone, Stephen Austra-Beck (beautiful name): YES!! I caught the "Prophecy" film link too. I was on the phone today discussing Exile, and was asked what the hell "The Angel Wars" is about. My reply was to describe the scene in the beginning of "The Prophecy" with the charred angel's skeleton. Very creepy, I liked though. Perhaps I should find a still of it somewhere... GOOD LUCK!!! :-P Anyway I've Exile, obviously, and interjections ("yippee!" "wow!" "cor!") are not enough to express my joy. I love it. I hear the Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode in it, unsurprisingly. Especially in "An Alien Cure"; that little guitar bit that kicks in at the last verse sounds quite DM to my deranged mind. But enough about that!! I have a kick-ass Exile review on my site now, and it's NOT like other Exile reviews. I don't say, "Here's what's wrong with it." Even if I thought it really had "problems" (which I don't think), I needn't restate them, since everybody else has had them out in the Digest for weeks! :-) Instead I devote it to a (admittedly probably HOPEFULLY shite) theory and to my personal reaction to it. Come ON, people!! You complain about drum tracks and comical chord changes; DOESN'T EXILE AFFECT YOU EMOTIONALLY AT ALL?! Why are you Numanoids, why do you bother, if you no longer FEEL the music?! Indignance off. Here's a taster of my Unconventional Exile Review-Essay-Wotsit: "EXILE is not about religion. The destruction of God and faith are an allegory to disillusionment with power and its accouterment, war. Gary was deeply shaken by the account of one child's murder by a few others; what was this incident but the depravity of war on a smaller scale, in a place thought safe? On his new album, Gary finds corruption everywhere. ..." It's a weird interpretation, nor is it so cold and clinical all the way through. Share and Enjoy, k? Much obliged. :-) http://members.aol.com/somacrow/numan/exile.html Love, napalm, and glorious lies, Riana "I'd take my soul from the Devil, for to give to you..." If memory serves, Gary Numan became one of my favorites when Replicas came out. Which in turn made me appreciate Tubeway Army and The Plan than I originally had. I think it's unrealistic to compare Numan albums and try to choose a favorite. But if I was forced to, I would choose Berserker, Dance, and Metal Rhythm. In that order. But don't force me to. I have never seen Gary live. And I would go to a great deal of effort to do so. But so far, I haven't had an opportunity to go to Europe (I live in the U.S., Seattle of all the god-awful places). There are a lot of Gary Numan fans in the Pacific Northwest. And if he came to Seattle or Vancouver B.C., I bet he would get a good showing. I am in a band with a couple of CD's out. We were included on a Gary Numan tribute CD. On which we contributed covers of "Bleed" and "This is New Love". We still play "Bleed" live. One of our favorites. Other artists I enjoy are Suzanne Vega, Sodom, Pet Shop Boys, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, most Black Sabbath derivatives (BS, Dio, Ozzy, Cathedral), Celtic Frost, Rush, Boltthrower,etc... same as everyone else. It's nice to see the support that Gary receives in the electronic "community". Through most of the 80's and early 90's being a Gary Numan fan was a quiet and mostly solitary endeavour. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 09:06:47 -0500 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Numan's lyrics are crap To: "joey@lindstrom.com" "When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; Even if you offer many prayers I will not listen." ISAIAH 1:15 "Do you believe...that God is all forgiving?" GARY NUMAN. EXILE I don't believe. Either that God is anything or that Gary's lyrics are crap. "Kneel before my alter and drink the wine of slaughter." This, apparently, is a truly atrocious lyric that should never have seen the light of day. I couldn't possibly comment. Still.... The Roman Catholic Church has the sacrament of the transubstantiation whe= re worshippers kneel before God's alter and drink red wine which they believ= e is actually (& literally) converted into the blood of Christ in the process. = And, of course, Christ said "Do not suppose that I have come to bring pea= ce to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come= to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law - a man's enemies will be the members of his own household." It might then be a cheeky but inspired interpretation of these facts to imagine God commanding "Kneel before my alter and drink the wine of slaughter", especially in a subtly different Universe where God is actual= ly waging a covert war against mankind. One might almost say the lyric was brilliant. But then, of course, we have people like Austin to set us straight. I listen to stuff differently as a consequence = of doing a few musical bits and bobs - I quite often know when drum = fills and choruses appear without hearing a track through, for example, = or how a verse progresses (if its a pretty unimaginative track). I'm not = in a position to give a more informed opinion than anyone else, just a = slightly different viewpoint, which I guess is what you were trying to = say! :-) I understood Gary was after a very "anthemic" quality to the album; that = relentless beat, big chords, wall of sound production, etc. Whether it = works on that level I guess is a matter of taste - it works for me, = though. To: "joey@lindstrom.com" All: In reading this week's Digest, I must address Stephen Catton's comments about another readers review of 'Exile', and the implied biased pre-qualification as a musician. I'm not addressing Stephen's comments in particular, but wish to make this statement. I love music, it's my drug. I'm not a musician, but I'm always interested in what musicians perspectives are as they no doubt are different from my own and based less on entertainment value then I would judge. I laugh sometimes how people react, often to interpreted insinuations that likely may not even have been intended. But alas, this is a free forum and for that I appreciate the ability to respond with my perspective. I envy Clea's mother being into Numan. My mother thinks he's a freak. The Berserker period scarred her. When I was young, though, I always got to listen to it in the car. I remember listening to 'The Pleasure Principle' and 'Telekon', but as the years progressed, and I got older, she like him less and less. She thought he was a bad influence, and was 'alien'. Hope everyone's having a good week. Stephen Austra-Beck // ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
