I'd like to take a moment to reacquaint myself with you, as there's been a lapse of over a year since I last visited NumanDigest regularly. I'm from Austria, but reside and work in the US (in Denver to be exact). I've been a Numan fan since '79. Over the years, Numan has gotten better and better. I enjoy every 'era' in his career. I **do** like OUTLAND, and M&S. I think "The Skin Game" is one of his best songs. I love "Warriors" and for years I felt this was his best album. I enjoyed Bill Nelson's contribution to the album and additional session tracks. "Berserker" of course was one of his hi lights. I'm delighted of course Numan has married. Never thought he would, after his seeming spell with some seemingly scary women. I don't like how the release of EXILE has been dealt with by Eagle in the UK thus far. I hope what happened with George Michael's arrangement with DreamWorks--to distribute his last OLDER album here--doesn't happen to Gary, on either shore. OLDER was poorly promoted here as DreamWorks' major initial release. And Eagle is supposedly managed by anonymous big shots like DreamWorks was by those jokers Eisner, Spielberg, and Geffen (?). As I mentioned previously, I'm tentatively concerned Eagle now has distribution of the Numa catalogue. Now I may never see a replacement cd copy of GHOST. I hope for the best as we all do. That's about all I'll inundate you with today. I have to keep me secrets, you know. Ever playing the Skin Game, Stephen Austra-Beck / / ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 23:35:29 PST From: info Subject: Algerian Massacres - Attack Against Islam To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Algerian Government behind Massacres The following quotes are all taken from a recent leaflet entitled: "The Massacres in Algeria are Designed to Slaughter Islam as an Ideology and a System". It shows clearly just who is behind the atrocities being perpetrated in Algeria, and the reasons for it. "Over 300 people were murdered, all of them residents of Sidi Rais near Sidi Moussa on the outskirts of the capital. Most of the victims were pregnant women, babies, and the elderly. They were slaughtered, disemboweled, and burned. In addition, more than 40 girls and women were kidnapped and later raped, then murdered." "The Algerian government and its supporters attribute these massacres to 'Terrorists', the term they use for activists of Islamic movements." "These massacres take place in areas known for their support of "Islamists"; in the suburbs of the capital and south of it." "More than 60,000 army and security personnel are stationed there. This would make it very difficult for large anti-government groups to move through these areas and commit massacres that last for several hours." "The Algerian government failed to reveal the truth about these atrocities. It failed to conduct any serious investigation to find the perpetrators. They left the matter deliberately wrapped in a shroud of mystery." "No massacre or terrorist operation has occurred in the area of Club Des Pines, turned recently into a high class city on the outskirts of the capital. It is there that government officials, army chiefs and pro-government party leaders reside." "reported on the authority of physicians ..... that: 'some of the dead from those who commit these horrible massacres were not circumcised'. Yet, circumcision is standard for all males in Algeria, who are Muslims!" "These observations rule out the possibility of Islamic groups perpetrating these horrible massacres for several reasons." "Even less is the likelihood that those who carry slogans of Islam and work to restore the rule by that which Allah has revealed would commit these massacres. These are people who know that Islam conclusively forbids such criminal acts under all circumstances." "Furthermore, this is not the route to establish Khilafah and restore the rule by that which Allah has revealed. The route to that is the route laid down and followed by the Messenger of Allah (saw) in his campaign to establish the Islamic State. It is political activism..." "It then proceeds to address the masses to generate in them a public opinion and a public awareness about and for the idea of Islam. This is achieved via intellectual struggle with the prevalent thought in society, and via political struggle with the ruling faction." "In addition, the so-called democratic approach and ballot boxes are not the route to the establishment of Khilafah." "Thus, the main objective of the Algerian government, backed by the Western states, out of perpetrating these massacres and attempting to attribute them to the Islamic groups, is to slaughter Islam and to undermine the idea of Khilafah and rule by that which Allah has revealed. The idea is to distort the image of Islam via these horrible and savage acts; to distort the image of the work for the restoration of the rule by Islam, and to distort the image of everyone who works to restore Islam to life, state, and society" "The goal is to alienate Muslims from Islam, from carrying it, and from those who carry it." The full text of the leaflet can be read at http://www.hizb-ut-tahrir.org together with several other free books and leaflets in Arabic and English by Hizb ut Tahrir covering aspects of the work for Islamic revival. ______________________________ If you do not wish to receive anymore information please reply to this email with message "REMOVE" in the subject line. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 13:54:12 -0500 From: "Troy L. Read all about it. To: "joey@lindstrom.com" In the last digest, Matthew Roberts demonstrated that he was indeed paying attention during his religious education classes at school, and cunningly made sense of the "Kneel before my alter and drink the wine of slaughter" lyric using first principles. > It might then be a cheeky but inspired interpretation of these facts to > imagine God commanding "Kneel before my alter and drink the wine of > slaughter", especially in a subtly different Universe where God is actually > waging a covert war against mankind. One might almost say the lyric was > brilliant. > But then, of course, we have people like Austin to set us straight. Thanks to Matthew, my mind has now been opened. I am finding hidden meanings in the most unusual of places. Take for instance the recent No 1 song "Barbie Girl" by Aqua. "I'm a Barbie girl In a Barbie world I'm very plastic - it's fantastic Come on Barbie - lets go party." (last line sung by Ken) Clearly, without a doubt, what the writer was getting at here was along the same lines as Rene Descartes' "Discours sur la Methode". Aqua are doubting the very existence of everything except the reality of their own thoughts. The singer is even doubtful about her own body and has therefore proceeded to rebuild a metaphysical bridge, imagining that she is in fact a plastic Barbie doll. Not only that but the metaphysical bridge even extended itself to let her believe that she was also living in another world. Yes..........Barbie's world! On the face of it it's a crap lyric, but just peel back the layers and one is faced with not only with a modern interpretation of Descarte, but also a complex argument of Kant's synthetic and contingent truths. Infact, "one might almost say the lyric was brilliant" too. There again it is easier to come to the conclusion that the lyric to "Barbie Girl" is after all, plain old crap. "Kneel before my alter and drink the wine of slaughter" just causes me to wince. Why? For the simple reasons that a) it's very corny and b) it rhymes. Of course, I presume that Matthew was just having one of his ironic days. Finally, it must be said that I think some lyrics on Exile are outstanding. In particular, The Angel Wars. This will be a way for people who did not get the Babylon series to get the b-sides on CD. I hope Eagle are as comprehensive as possible and include No Shelter. To get the b-sides on they'll have to use the vinyl version of Berserker (its first appearance on CD) and The Fury (long out of print). I hope Eagle have the material remastered as many of the albums could stand some improvement. Apparently the new version CDs will be available separately as well as in the boxed set. I hope Eagle do this right. No word of when to expect this release. Dominion Day is confirmed as the single in January or February. Not the best choice IMO but singles have rarely been Gary's strong point after his initial success. I'd really like to see what Dead Heaven or Angel Wars would do. My mother got me INTO Numan. :-) It pays off to go rooting through really old (-er than me) mix cassettes you find! It also pays off to pay attention to guitar tabs... "This song was originally recorded by Gary Numan in the late '70s." Who? Who cares, let's learn to play a Manson song we've never actually heard! I remember from before that, when Numan would come on the radio once in a blue moon and Mom would say, "'Cars'! Everyone LOVED this song x many years ago!" And I'd think later, "Umm, that song by the Cars." Yes! I did that too! :-) But enough ranting about my sainted mother. I'm never giving her copies of Replicas and The Pleasure Principle back. :-) Barry Lynch asked, <> I read on NuZone that Billy Corgan and members of Ministry and somebody else (Flint? ::shrug::) were to have played a concert thingie on I think 14 November; the proceeds were to have gone to charity. They were to have been The Replicants. (Gosh I love verb tenses.) But I wrote to Chris Carman, the webmaster of one of the major Pumpkins sites, and he told me that "Billy backed out of this show a couple days beforehand because he got into a fight and couldn't play." Cryptic. So no show. Pity though - can you imagine Billy and Al Jourgensen, together and performing, say, "Bombers"? :-) Here's hoping they do get together for real someday! Tomorrow I'm having a Big Fucking Party and I'm gonna play Exile and see what reaction I get. :-) (I'll report back if I get favorable results.) It will be the first time in a week I've played anything else! Hope I've not entirely bored everybody :-P BTW, I LOVED that "Thanksgiving Day" parody. Maybe I'll sing it at the table next Thursday as a sort of twisted grace. :-) Cheers for weird American holidays. Love and napalm (yes, it's outdated! So? After I tore it open and jammed it into my VCR I embarked on a nearly 2 hour tour of Numan history. My comments for my first Numan "Concert": Great lighting! Geez - I forgot how big Wembley is!... Fun footage of the pilot with a good "Ultravox-ish" instrumental. Fun! What was with those 3 New Wave chicks during his outfit change? Egads... Was that cool in the 80's? A little too soppy near the end, but then you gotta put yourself in those shoes. Imagine saying goodbye to THAT! Everyday I Die - too slow. Not enough old stuff for me. Ha ha - they screwed up She's Got Claws! I never thought he'd have a hairy chest. Well worth the money for me. All my converted friends are wanting to borrow it. I hope to see the man here in the States VERY VERY VERY SOON. The sound was great and he was fun to watch. But I'd never want to see him in such a large arena. 800+ sounds just fine! PS - Does anyone have any Numan tour posters for sale? Love to add to my collection I'm building up... Heard a few snippets from the new album - the goth chicks here would go nuts over it.
