I myself have only converted one person in my time. But it has to be siad that English people are pretty stuck up there arses when it comes to music. I get ridiculed by most people for Likeing Numan with comments like " he only ever had one hit and that was cars and anyone coould come up with that ", When I go into all the other albums and chart successes people just think its all rubbish. but the irony is that when I do actually dare play some Numan music in the presence of others they actually quite like it but because its like not the done thing and its all supposed to be rather dodgy and as most poeple tell me " don't you know he's a raving homosexual " ( lots of people still thiink along thses lines ) even if he was I couldnt give a shit. bu the point is that people do like his music but are to pigheaded to admit that Numan has had some pretty genius moments. Play a song like random to people they think its some modern tecno artists and cringe in embaressment when they know its Numan. Well that enogh militant rambling from me, I'm glad things are picking up in numan world, especially that he's going to tour the u.s. Some people need there heroes. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 1997 12:29:13 GMT From: Phil Marsh Subject: Iain Banks?/Numan Principle To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Two bits from me:- Louise said: >I've read the Autobiography. Compulsive reading. When you've read >it, go and read 'Espidair Street' by Iain Banks. Hi Louise - welcome to the list. I enjoyed the biog too - what's the link with the Iain Banks book? From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Numan Disco >Had a brilliant time at The Numan Disco in London on Saturday. The >Numan Principle were excellent and it seems only one person didn't >enjoy themselves (don't know what that was all about??). Well, I was there too - and from the people we spoke to, plenty seemed to not enjoy it, not just one person. I distinctly heard jeers in Jason's direction once or twice (and no, they weren't from near where we were standing!). I would have said reaction was fairly "mixed". People at Numan disco type events always go and enjoy themselves anyway. You're probably referring to the incident which occurred after I told a mate of mine that the keyboard player was miming and he went up to have a look. And he was. Obviously Jason didn't take too kindly to someone coming up to the front and staring intently at the keyboard. There were sound quality problems as well (feedback etc), but that was hardly Jason's fault! >I understand the whole thing had to be organized at the last minute >for some strange reason but there were 50 or 60 people there. >Apparently there's usually around 150 so I'm looking forward to the >next one. The night at the Williams Alehouse had a good atmosphere (as always) despite the low turn out, they do put on a good night regardless - that's the third time I've been, and we always have a good time. I'm sure we'll all be going again to the next one; whether Jason and his tape are there or not. Sorry, but when most of its on tape it just leaves me cold. And despite playing for about 2 years in Young Things Don't Scream 10 years ago (hi Mark! 2 of us on the Digest - what are the odds?), and having done heaps of Numan covers over the years, some faithful, some not -the idea of someone actually adopting and exaggerating all Gary's on stage mannerisms strikes me as a bit weird. But hey, that's only my opinion - Matthew and Louise obviously enjoyed Jason's performance and have a completely different opinion - doesn't make either of us wrong! :-) >I was talking to the band and their next gig is in Chelmsford on 11th >December. Anybody who can go should! Well, if anyone's curious (like I was), they should certainly go and check him out. Then (as Matthew, Louise and I have), you can make up your own mind! :-) Have I avoided a flaming this time? ;-) Phil (pmarsh@tpmde.ac.uk) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 1997 04:24:41 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) Subject: I have a few answers!!! To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Hey!! I have a few answers!!! "Living Ornaments" was (limited) released in Japan as Asylum 3 and is now long out of print. To my knowledge it has never been released otherwise in cd form. Here is the info for Tia "Cars" - which I do NOT recommend purchasing for anything other than novelty value (and even then...) Catalog # CD 443-2 UPC # 0 19011-0443-2 Ichiban Records 1997 P.O. Box 724677, Atlanta, GA 31139-1677 Phone (770) 419-1414 fax 419-1230 email IchibanR@aol.com I ordered the Sirius cd from a comic book store in early September. It was scheduled to be released in mid-November. A couple weeks ago I went to check on the status, and the guy who a) seemed to not _particularly_ care and b) was quite confused as to why anyone would want such a thing, told me that company NEVER releases anything on time. He told me that he could not (would not?) order the single. Initially when I went in to inquire (prompted by info from this digest) he did at least know what I was talking about (he showed me the page in the catalog with the details, which I persuaded him to sell to me) but told me that they had "passed" on ordering any copies for the store. But he let me special order a copy. So here it is the end of November and still no word... The Numa cds may be officially out of print, but the stores in my area (L.A.) still have most of them. I believe that the plan is to re-issue them under the Eagle label, which means they will have distribution in America (yay!) among other places, once things finally come to order. I was frankly disappointed with the Eagle distribution, as it definitley took longer than usual (ie with Numa or BB releases) to find here, plus it was two dollars more than I've ever had to pay before (not that stopped me). Here is the catalog number for Exile (the Eagle UK version) EAGCD008 Here is the UPC code just in case: 5 034504 100824 In case anyone is wondering (or has some info) I have not yet been able to find a copy of the Numan biography "Praying to the Aliens". Every book store (and cd import store) I have asked to check does not have it on their computer listings... Gary said it would be available from his website/fanclub but I am getting rather concerned. Best wishes, Rod Los Angeles ------------------------------ Date: 27 Nov 97 10:01:00 +0000 From: "Wooldridge, Simon" Subject: Machine + Soul anyone? To: "joey@lindstrom.com" I have noticed that the vast majority of this discussion forum really do not like Machine + Soul. This influenced me even before I had my own copy such that when I finally got my own, I could only listen to half of it before turning it off. It probably didn`t help that I got it at the same time as Sacrifice, in whose company M+S paled considerably. Since then I have attempted to listen to it on occasion and give it a chance, but in the back of my mind that negativity was always there and I could never give it a fair chance, and never finished listening to it. Last night this changed. Mid-evening, I settled down to do some ironing (of all things) and wanted to find something to have on as background music. While searching through my collection, I had to glance at M+S and decided to give it another whirl. I hadn`t listened to this album for about a year or so, so it was due a hearing, or at least an attempt at one. Maybe it was because it was there purely as background, but I found myself humming along in no time. My appreciation of this album went through 180 degrees. I am the first to admit this is not his strongest album, it probably is his weakest overall, but that doesn`t mean it`s not good. I found myself actually enjoying listening to it for the first time, wailing female vox et al. I now believe this album to be extremely under-rated, even if it does contain a weak Prince cover. I only have the Extended version, so I can`t pass judgement on what difference the normal length album makes but with the extra tracks on the end you can see how the Sacrifice sound was developing. While writing this I am listening to Exile, which is one of Garys best albums, and I can still say positive things about M+S - a natural extension of Metal Rhythm which was a great album (certainly in my top 10 of Numan albums). Go on, give it another chance - you may surprise yourself. ttfn, Si ++++ Senior Systems Equipment Engineer Lucent Technologies NS-UK swooldri@lucent.com ++++ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 19:18:46 +0000 From: Tom Gorham Subject: More bile To: "joey@lindstrom.com" More bile at Numan Weekly News: http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~jargon/numa.htm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Nov 1997 04:00:30 -0000 From: "Philip Davies and Kelly Wright" Subject: Question To: "joey@lindstrom.com" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000A_01BCFBB2.2B8AD300 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I'm genuinely curious, did anyone else return from the Exile tour with = chicken pox? A certain Mark Stanton has managed not to let his e-mail address appear in the Digest, so I have to shout out to you here, Mark. First you implied that you live near me with the bit about Streetlight and Rasputin... now I'm going to have to go down there and check it out... :-) And then you teased about the friend of yours who works at a musical venue. Well, is it a S.F. Bay Area venue? (The Warfield again, as Gary always played there when he was touring the U.S.?) Please do e-mail me and tell me more, you've piqued my interest and I love hearing from Bay Area Numanoids. :-) Love and napalm and Streetlight gift certificates, Riana "We all live in the same museum, we all rearrange the same old song." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 1997 05:15:17 -0500 (EST) From: NewcombG3@aol.com Subject: Thanks To: "joey@lindstrom.com" I want to thank whoever it was who sent in the links to order Exile and Praying to the Aliens here in the States. I Disconnect from You.) at the following site: http://home.hwsys.com/users/glenn/pages/worldmid.htm I don't remember which of the many links had them, though. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 1997 10:03:51 +0000 From: amchaffie@meto.gov.uk Subject: This, that, and the Numan Principle. We weren't being nasty at all, just taking the piss a bit, and it didnt help the mood when Jason told me he would "punch my lights out" after I pointed out that the keyboard player wasnt doing anything. I did enjoy myself, but that was when Gary's music was on as opposed to Jason's karaoke versions ! We had a chat afterwards which was a little tense to begin with, but I think I managed to convince him it was just a bit of fun. >A quick note about the RANDOM 3-Fan-Project: More contributions appear >to be on the way. To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Hi folks- I'd looked all over town for EXILE but no luck. When I heard the roommate was going out CD shopping, I dropped the bug in his ear to look out for it just in case. Imagine my glee when he walked in two hours later with a copy! Thanx to Winter Park Compact Discs here in Orlando (which had THREE copies in stock, quite a leap of faith), I have now been immersed in the album for a couple hours. I am VERY impressed. Despite hearing snippets of the works-in-progress on Gary's website, to hear the final product is indeed thrilling. Not only are the songs good, but like SACRIFICE they paint a cohesive picture and atmosphere as a whole. Way to GO, Gary! As to whether or not it hits the masses, I don't know. Surely a generation that buys the cartoon demonics of Marilyn Manson would be a bit perplexed by something that's this dark *and* intelligent at the same time ( ;)) But I *do* know that this is the Gary Numan music I have always liked best, and the less he sounds like everyone else the more I like it... And the lyrics are ambitious, to say the least. When this finally gets released here in America, will Wal-Mart stock it? I hope not. steve off. -steve in florida p.s. An interesting point about both EXILE and SACRIFICE. To me the albums are more powerful than some because due to similarities in rhythm tracks, atmosphere, etc., the songs seem less like songs than movements of a singular piece. Now *that's* deep. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Nov 1997 14:30:19 -0500 From: "Gregory T. [VERY IMPORTANTLY, one should NEVER write back to an address, whether to send a 'remove' request or even just to complain. they use these replies to track what accounts are active, so they can resell the address and send even more spam.] - is there a way to set it up so that the only people who can post to this list are people who belong to it? i admin a low-volume mailing list at hyperreal.org and turning this on really keeps out a lot of spam. if anyone else has any question about fighting spam, please feel free to drop me a note and i'll try to answer. some good sources of information about it are http://www.cauce.org , and http://spam.abuse.net/spam/ . thanks for your attention obNuman: has anyone found a source for Exile in seattle washington? :) -- Gregory Samson, MD - Dr. Evil Microwizard (gtsamson@bigfoot.com) "it's a cry, a cry for survival" ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
