To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Just played a CD-rom game at a friends house. It is called "You Don't Know Jack", and is one of the very few games I even play on the computer. It is a very unique trivia game, with questions very funny, unlike most trivia games. Well, for the first time, the category "let me have one hit" came up. This was the final question, and one bold print word, centered on the screen becomes larger, while other words flash in and out of view from all directions. When the relating word/s flash by, you have to buzz in. Was I shocked to see Gary Numan sitting there, and I just knew they were going to say Cars! Yup! It happened. Man, it was great to see this on a newer game, but I am so tired of people here(the states) thinking that if you do not perform/sell your music here, then you must not be doing anything. This happens with many artists, and not just Numan. Well, enough for now. I just thought I would give you another strange Numan Sighting! Take care! You have no idea how ANNOYING it is not to be able to get my hands on a copy of Exile ! Asia distribution is promised soon from Eagle but boy is it slow We have Tower Records and HMV here and neither of them brought it in even though they ALWAYS bring in imports as well as via local distributors and they have a good stock of Numan Very very disappointed but still waiting eagerly ... I just received it this week and as always the music is fantastic. I read once where someone credited Numan with not being much of a musical genious as much as just being prolific. I disagree, I think Numan's music just takes more time to absorb, because musically the songs are richer than any other music I have ever heard. Numan's music always took me at least 10 listens before it clicked and when it clicked it really clicked. It seems like everytime a new CD comes out I think it couldn't possibly be better than the last but somehow it always is. My favorite period is still the Dance/I Assassin/Warriors/Berserker era but I like it all. Once again the new CD delivers. I do wish the songs were not so dark. I listen to them in the car a lot and with the kids in the back seat and I'm not sure I'd want them to pick up on some of the sentiments. The thing I always loved about Numan music was that one, it was always cutting-edge and two, it usually went out of its way to harm no one. I don't know about the UK, but here in the US the anti-God/no-God sentiments are kind of an old story. I think what would be more cutting-edge today would be something more positive and optimistic lyrically. As great as the Exile CD is, I can't help but wonder how much better it would been with a less dark feel. Just an opinion. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Dec 1997 02:01:25 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) Subject: for sale To: "joey@lindstrom.com" Hello. Apparently, quite recently there was an item on the Satelite channel NBC The Ticket over here in England which profiled famous peoples cars. The reason I know about this is because a friend of mine saw this show and came around saying that I still copy Numan 'cause I drive the same car as him!! When I quized her, she told me that Gary had two American sports cars and was demonstrating them around his house (I drive an '89 GTA Trans Am here in the UK), she couldn't remember the models though. From what she managed to describe, one of them sounds like a Mustang. I have owned my car for four years now and the only American car I remember Gary owning was that white Corvette. I certainly didn't buy my car to emulate Gary, afterall, these are very personal things to us Chaps!! Anyway, my question to the list is, did anyone else see this show? Has anyone amaged to get hold of Dans Le Parc/Metal 12 inch on red vinyl yet? I am trying to find a copy, it has Robert Armani remixes, wicked! Still haven't bought Exile yet, I am not convinced with this material after the tour, it needs more imagination and variety of rhythms in the percussive department. Here am I to give a proper introduction to myself for all of you. I am one of the classic SNL Numanoids. I loved the bouncing ball with the lyric to "Praying To The Aliens." I'm 33 going on 23 (or even 21, "21 till I die!"). I refuse to grow up, and I refuse to let loose my loyalty to Gary Numan and his music. My favorite albums are: REPLICAS, BERSERKER, and SACRIFICE (at least until I get EXILE!) It's hard to pick favorite songs, but I'll try: "Are 'Friends' Electric?," "M.E.," "I Die: You Die," "A Child With The Ghost," "Devious" (yes, it's true), and "A Question of Faith." I am a returning (professional) student working on my B.S. degree in Recording Industry Management with minors in Mass Communications and Marketing at Middle Tennessee State University. My degree should be complete in about a year. I wish Eagle Records would hire me to market Numan projects! MTSU is in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Davis Market, the suspected center of the cosmos, has kept me in Middle Tennessee for many years now. Murfreesboro is about a half hour's drive south east of Nashville. It may surprise many of you to know that it's not all rednecks and country music here. It's actually kind of cool. There's a lot of alternative music, and even gothic/industrial/techno scene. You may visit my goofy web site: http://www.mtsu.edu/~rein02b4 I haven't set up a Numan page yet, but I plan to soon. I'm still trying to get my copy of EXILE (dammit!). The sources I had been counting on have failed for me. Looks like I'll have to shell out the $30 for Siren Disc to send it to me (dammit dammit dammit!). I also have a newly revived music project called "7.7" The first recording in two years commenced on this past Thanksgiving. If you can imagine Andy McClusky, Trent Reznor, Gary Numan, and Mike Edwards getting together to make music, you can get an idea of what I'm doing. I am pleased to join you all here in the digest. I was urged on by our dear friend Riana. She has been a great inspiration to me. ...see the young boy keeping to the shadows... -Jerry V. It is always easy to criticise something when on the subject of Numan. I find myself doing it more often than not. Such a sad phenomenum. OK, so the Numan Principle were playing to a tape. So what? Do any of you consider what is called 'entertainment value'? I was hugely entertained as was my boyfriend who only went to this event because otherwise, I would have gone on my own. (On the subject of conversion I would not attempt to convert him to Numan. As far as I'm concerned it's his loss...) Numan fans seem to me to be most critcal (of Numan and others) and I expect this is derived from Numan getting so much shit from people who, mostly, don't know what they're talking about and usually only say what is expected from them. Therefore, Numan fans (obviously) know what they're talking about and can offer critcisim with (apparent) impunity. If there is anything I have learnt from being a Numan Fan it is to not give a wet slap what anybody thinks, and like things and do things because it gives me pleasure. Not because it is acceptable behaviour. Now, please tell me I'm wrong about the genaral acceptability of disliking The Numan Principle. Anyway, Kareoke is very popular, I believe. Iain Banks link. Read the book (Espidair Street) and then ask the question again. How I enjoy the Numan Digest. I never used to look forward to Sundays! Love to all of you.
