He was asked who influenced him and he replied "James Brown, Sly & Family Stone, George Parliament Psychedelic Clinton, and then Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Gary Numan." Unfortunately the Numan namecheck slightly fazed the generally clueless interviewer "Simone" who then rambled on about the Kraftwerk connection for 10 minutes. Incidently I remember Afrika Bambaataa being asked back in the early 80s who else he would like to work with and replying that there was only Gary Numan left...... I must admit that I find it hard to imagine Afrika Bambaataa, Tricky et al strolling around listening to Complex and Down in the Park on their Sony Walkmans. I wonder what they will make of Dominion Day? I alas did not hear this broadcast and was wondering if anyone out there did. If this wasn't just some twisted hoax a friend of mine played, can someone tell me what it was all about. Thanks, Norb. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 12:17:33 PT From: "Mark Stanton, Industrial Design & Visualization" Subject: Dawn CD release To: numan@cs.uwp.edu This is a response to Susan Jacobs' email regarding the Numan-Dawn CDs. They are out now. I think the real release date was Nov 20th or something like that although I only just got mine yesterday. There is a full length CD and a single (hasn't come in yet). The best way to get these CDs is to go to your local Comic Book store and place a special order. The way I got my Dawn CDs (not recommended) is to order through "Previews", a catalog of comic book stuff, but this will take about 2 months. There's a rather poor quality picture of Gary on the back, but the 12 page lyric/art insert is pretty darn cool. In my opinion, for what it is worth, Exile is very "morish". I don't find the tunes as catchy as those on "Sacrifice", but I keep finding that having played it through once, I want to play it through again. It's not an album to get "fed up" of. I mean I may have asked this before in the last few years, and if so, please forgive me. My memory isn't what it once was (I have to blame vast consumption of vodka for this I suppose.) I have always wondered about the following line (from what track at the moment I don't recall) off of 'I Assasin' where Gary states: "I like New Romantics but I don't like Stephen..." I've since wondered if this referred to VISAGE lead man Steve Strange? VISAGE consisted of London BLITZ club owner Strange, ULTRAVOX recording artists (and Numan studio and tour musicians) Midge Ure and Bille Currie (who are again featured on the new "Living Ornaments" re-release). Yes, Beggars US will be releasing the first 4 Numan albums (Tubeway Army, Replicas, Pleasure Principle, Telekon) in original packaging with (hopefully) new sleeve notes by Gary and Steve Malins. The albums will need remastering so I'd like to get them out late spring. And hopefully there'll be a surprise bonus on Tubeway Army! Otherwise the bonus tracks will be as on the UK releases. Living Ornaments '79 and '81 are available and selling fast. I know mail order is a big pain but at present it is the best way to release these concerts and the price should still be OK even from the states. Random 2 will get a simultaneous USA / UK release in early March. (God, I think that CD will upset a few fans!!!) - steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 09:42:35 -0000 From: "Paul Denman" Subject: Support Acts To: Hello, I've been lucky enough to see Gary live in the UK on every tour he's done since 1983 (I was only 10 years old in 1979 & my Mum wouldn't let me go:-( One thing I've constantly been very dismayed by is the audience's reaction to the support acts. At every concert bar the Warriors tour when the excellent Tik & Tok were the support act, the audience reaction has been shameful to say the least. I've seen many support acts which I have actually liked; Larry Loeber was highly entertaining, Let Loose sounded excellent even though they were not exactly my personal taste, and Bis at Manchester in 1997 were very impressive. I'll use them as an example... Here are 3 kids who have been supporting Gary in a very public way; mentioning him as an influence & hero in their interviews, and contributing an excellent track for the Random album. Yet, when they took the stage at Manchester, only a handful of people were present. They received a very muted applause, and worst of all, some idiots started chanting "Numan, Numan" inbetween songs. The singer/guitarist stood bemused and informed the crowd "Look, we are Numan fans aswell." and "We're looking forward to seeing the great man play after us.", but the crowd would not let up. Towards the end of the set, they did receive a modest amount of applause, but after enjoying their set immensely I was pissed off to say the least. Why won't some fans let-up and enjoy themselves? Sorry about the rant, but it's really bugged me from time to time. On a more positive note, how about starting a new discussion thread on the digest... "Which band(s) would you like to see supporting Gary?" Let's be realistic & not suggest bands like Blur, but it would be interesting to see which bands would actually get a good response from the Numan crowd. My vote? I'd like to see newer bands such as Placebo, Menswear or Bis support him. I'd also love to see USA bands such as The Replicants or Sammy do the honours. Over to you.... Happy Nu-Year to y'all for 1998. Paul. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
