I've been a Numan fan since before I was 10 Years Old, I'm now almost 29. This is a long time but I know there are quite a few more like me. It all started in April '79 when Tubeway Army appeared on Top of the Pops doing Are Friends Electric. I was a blown away little kid then, and I'm still pretty blown away by it. I've bought everything ever since, but didn't get to a show until the 1983 Warriors Tour. I've never missed a tour since. I must be up to about 60 shows, but I've lost count to be honest. A few friends and myself used to tour the UK every year and have gathered quite a few stories over that time, a particular party in Preston 1987 springs readily to mind, but it's a bit Triple X, I might tell you about it sometime. I'd like to hear about everyone else's tour tales if you have any, I'm sure some memories will be jogged. Has anyone else bought the Living Ornaments '79 & '81 CD's from Beggars Banquet yet. They're bloody brilliant. '81 is just Micromusic but remixed and clear as a bell, you can hear so much stuff which is lost on that old Video. '79 is a different thing altogether, it's the full show from which the originalLP and Video were taken, but the remix is totally new and the previously released tracks have taken on a new lease of life. Down in the Park and You Are In my Vision are stunning. These CD's are a must. Hope to hear from you all soon. The main force behind the music they play is the big money that the major American record companies plough into the company. Numan just doesn't fit into their idea of what's cool - mainly due to the fact that MTV's music is chosen by committee by young hopeful wannabes that MTV employ for a pittance or in some cases no money at all as job-experience slaves. But now many hip stars are coming out to reveal he was one of their heroes, so they are being forced to acknowledge this, albeit in very tiny soundbites. You still don't see any of Numan's later videos (Emotion etc.) being given airplay. Even though it is called MTV Europe have a close look at the music they play on heavy rotation. Although the target audience is 18 - 25 year olds they regularly have Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson weekends. Puh-leeeese! I was there when VH-1, the sister channel which caters to the older music generation, interviewed Numan on the back of his success with the Premier TV ad (a long time after I had repeatedly suggested an in-depth look at the man and his music and the influence it has had on many other performers.) Of course as I wasn't involved, they did very little research, asked inane questions and ended up with a very lame and amateurish interview. No wonder poor Gary is apprehensive about the media - it's full of prats. MTV have their own agenda when it comes to their playlist and it's mostly soft American trash. How do you think previously unheard of artists like Celine Dion became so popular overnight? The record company did a deal with MTV and suddenly they were playing her videos every hour. We're supposed to believe that 18 - 25 year olds like this shit. I don't think so! I just saw MTV's Prodigy Live In Moscow gig - ah, if only Gaz would do the same! If these young music-starved Russians go crazy over Prodigy (Sex Pistols for the '90's) Numan would blast them over the edge! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Sorry if I'm behind a bit, but I've been a busy little boy (the holidays are over, thankfully) -- SO I need to catch up a bit here: Martin: hope you had a great holiday season, Outland looks great as always, and thanks for the chuckle (the night before christmas thingie..) Miss Marlene: Please buy a second VCR! (I have three). Andy: Yes, I'm just as darned enthused as you about another version of "Cars". Yes, these new 're-vamped' (uummmm hhmmm) tracks WILL be appearing on the Dominion Day single, according to Gary himself (unless Tony is doing updates on the site now, and feels like playing a joke on us :-)) I'm very sorry to see M. H. 's "Nu-Zone" dissapear off our presence here on the internet. Matthew, you will be missed deeply. I hope you are well, and maybe now you can tell us all how you knew about Gary Numan issues before GARY even knew about them... Just kidding...we love you!! Anyway, enough for now...awaiting my second copy of Exile to arrive (for the nurse) but it's on back-order (that's a good sign it's selling, or Eagle screwed up) How many of us are going on the U.S. tour?? I'll start saving up my bucks very soon...I've never seen Gary live, and have waited 18 long years to -- so I'll take out a bank loan if I have to! (let's hope me being laid off from work isn't for too much longer) OK, long enough..Hugs and kisses to everyone, including the great Lord Nick... Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 03:39:34 -0700 From: Joey Lindstrom Subject: Crazy Brits To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well, Paul Denman launched a bit of a rant in a recent Digest about the poor attitude of British fans towards Gary's support acts. I gotta say I agree with Paul 100%. Case in point: when I saw "Let Loose" support Gary in Manchester during the Premier Tour, I thought they did a wonderful job. And indeed, they did manage to win over a few people. But still, the majority of the fans I spoke with at the time simply weren't prepared to give them a chance. Even when the drummer launched into an impromptu rendition of "Films", they just yawned and yelled "get off the stage!" Makes me think "these Brits are crazy" And this was confirmed on Saturday night, during a National Hockey League game between the Florida Panthers and the Calgary Flames. The game was 3-3 at the end of regulation time, forcing sudden-death overtime. The fans are on their feet, cheering on the home team. And during a stop in the action, a young man from England jumps over the glass and runs around on the ice for 2 minutes. Only problem was... he wasn't wearing any clothes. Here's a follow-up story from Monday's Calgary Sun: Streaker Says He Did It Out Of... BORE 'DOME By Kelly Harris Calgary Sun A fully-clothed Julian Vaudrey, who streaked across the Canadian Airlines Saddledome during a Flames game, left the country yesterday - the day before he was scheduled to appear in court on indecency charges. Before boarding his flight for England, Vaudrey confessed it wasn't a bet that led to his nearly two-minute-long naked dash. Instead, the 21-year-old said he shed his clothes and jumped over the boards because he was bored. "I thought the atmosphere was lacking a bit," said Vaudrey, who streaked across the ice during the Calgary Flames/Florida Panthers game Friday night. "I thought the crowd needed a bit of a lift." Fans did roar with laughter and shock at the run. Vaudrey said he did it for the tradition and the rush. "There is nothing more thrilling than doing a streak," he said. "It's tradition at the school I used to go to in England." The tradition came from the Rugby School in Warwickshire, England, where students commonly streaked following school events like dances, Vaudrey said. Now a student at Durham University in England, Vaudrey was in Canada for a ski vacation with some of his classmates - who offered to hold onto Vaudrey's clothes while he ran nude across the ice. But instead of memories of cutting up the powder in the Rockies, Vaudrey and his friends said when they think of the trip, they'll remember what led to Vaudrey getting charged with causing a disturbance and indecency. "It was so unlike Julian," said friend Nicholas Holt, 20. "We came here to ski - but we'll remember the streak." Vaudrey said he scouted out the Saddledome during an intermission for an easy way to get onto the ice. Despite walking naked through the concourse level, Vaudrey said no one noticed him until he got to the ice. "I just walked casually out of the loo," he said. "There were some guys at the top of the stairs and I sort of said, 'Sorry, guys' and squeezed through." Despite running out onto the ice with no clothes on, Vaudrey said standing completely naked in front of more than 17,000 fans made him forget the cold. "I was at centre ice and the guy ran up and handed me a towel and said, 'OK, well it's time to go'." Police say if Vaudrey doesn't appear in court today, he'll forfeit $100 bail and face arrest if he comes to Canada again. Remind me to steer well clear of Rugby the next time I fly over for a Numan tour. :-) Has this ever happened at any of his gigs? If anyone is interested, I've got three scans from the Sunday Sun that I can send via email, including the front-page shot of Julian "in all his glory". :-) For anyone who remembers that crazy Flames jersey I was wearing during my trip, you'll also be able to see how they're SUPPOSED to be worn. By actual athletes. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 22:37:56 -0600 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Dawn: Lucifer's Halo To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings Dawn/Numan fans! I guess I was one of the lucky winners of the recent Beggars Banquet "Dawn can make you a Numan" contest. The only thing is, I'm not a terribly big fan of the Dawn series. I've apparently won an autographed copy of "Dawn: Lucifer's Halo" trade paperback by Joseph Michael Linsner. I'm assuming for now (as I don't actually have the book in hand yet) that it's autographed by Gary, and not by the author. I should hopefully have my prize somewhere in the first or second week of February. If anyone has an interest in buying or trading me something for this little gem, I'm all ears! I'll never forget when I first saw him perform on Saturday Night Live singing 'Praying to the Aliens'. I am now 33 and have a 4 yr. old son who sings 'Cars' and requests it just about every time we jump in the car. Anyway, I missed my one opportunity to see him live here in the U.S. and trust me, I would never make that same mistake twice. What is it going to take to see Gary here in the states? For God sake, ZZ top was recently on tour here in Daytona Beach and the place nearly sold out. I know if Gary came to here or anywhere in the U.S. he would have a positive reaction from his fans. Everytime I receive the Digest my heart beat skips in anticipation hoping to see "Numan Tours the U.S.", but nothing. Well, here's wishing. I was excited to hear the Living Ornaments CD is released, however I really love the White Noise album. By the way, does anyone know what Gary is laughing at in AFE? I've wondered this for years and I'm dyin' to know since Gary is usually very quiet. Sorry for rambling on. Howard" Subject: Numan/Reznor To: numan@cs.uwp.edu This is in response to the contributor who suggested that Trent Reznor should produce Numan. I disagree. Trent Reznor is talented, and certainly grasps the darkest concepts. On that qualification Trent may be a good choice. The problem is this: Sonically Trent has been caught up in this highly compressed distortion noise thing ever since the BROKEN EP. PRETTY HATE MACHINE was an incredible album. It was one of the most vital, and important albums of the 80's, and possibly even the entire "Rock" era. PHM contained all the darkness, and angst without all of that in your face noise. I would be quite upset if a Numan record came out with all that annoying compressed noise. I know Bowie took that chance, but Bowie follows the wind, and it works for him I suppose. As for the drum loops; I admit they were a bit annoying on SACRIFICE, but on EXILE I felt they were well done. I think the musical direction of EXILE is 99% correct. I can't wait for the follow up. It is my hope that Gary takes every bit the time and care with the next album that he obviously did with this one. As far as working with other artists, it might be interesting to hear a collaboration with Big Beat Techno artists like The Prodigy and Fatboy Slim, Industrial Gothic like KMFDM or Kill Switch...Klick (Cleopatra label mate), maybe even Siousxie or Depeche Mode, but please, no Ministry, and no Reznor until he's had enough of noise. The Website includes photos to collect, sounds to download, a Club Fanzine to look through page by page and a few surprises. I've noticed many postings here in this awesome Numan newsgroup looking for Numan video, etc., so on the Website, I have made available the full catalogue of items heretofore only available to the likes of Club Members. In fact, I believe the NAGNFC Website is the World's largest resource for Numan audio/video collectibles. If all this has peaked your curiosity, stop by! The coffee is on and the cookies are baking.
