Looks likely its going to happen sooner rather than later. Europe in the Spring, then back here, then Australia, then back here, then America (I think). I spoke to Peter Gilbert at the John Foxx gig in Shrewsbury last Saturday (absolutely SMOKING, by the way) - I'd had a few drinks, so I'm not 100% sure on when, I'm sure he said later this year though. He definitely did say 1998 is one hell of a busy year for Gary touring overseas! > I really love the White Noise >album. By the way, does anyone know what Gary is laughing at in AFE? Yup! I was there that night. It was the encore, and he'd had Larry Loeber and Hohokam as support on that tour (both acts every night). When AFE started, Hohokam came on and started prancing about the stage (end of tour high jinks). One of Hohokam was in drag, topless except for a bra. He snuck up behind Gary and when he looked round, he pulled one cup of the bra down and exposed a nipple to Gary. And that's it - that's where you hear Gary laugh! Well, it was quite funny at the time... :-) Regards to all! Phil (pmarsh@tpmde.ac.uk) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jan 1998 23:24:35 EST From: SomaCrow Subject: Airplay?! RAPTURE!!!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A very excited hello to all - I've a story you won't believe! May college radio forever be venerated and praised to the highest! I was station-surfing last night around quarter after 10 and at the last station programmed into my receiver, I suddenly heard "Berserker"! You can imagine my extreme delight. I tried to get the reception to improve, for it's just a college station and doesn't have a particularly high broadcasting wattage. (I hope I sound like I know what I'm talking about here, I don't) But that song came to an end and what did my ears hear next - "Call Out the Dogs"! I realized the entire program must be devoted to Numan! One hour, I thought - until I phoned the station and talked with the DJ. He calls himself "EO" (Captain?), told me the show's been on since '84, and that whenever Numan puts out something new, he plays it! And that his program was not one hour, but THREE HOURS LONG!!!! And ALL of it was devoted to Numan!!! I'd missed the first 3-5 songs, by my estimation; but I caught the rest on tape! As you can imagine, I praised EO to the high heavens (dead or no) and promised to talk about it on my site. Which I have. I phoned John Marques "Joy Circuit" Carramao and we crowed over this incredible miracle - unfortunately he couldn't receive the station very well, since he lives way up in the boonies of the Bay Area. ;-) I am pleased to report the first known airplay in the Bay Area of Exile - "Dominion Day" and "Prophecy" both got played at the end of the set. The whole set list that I know of will be on my site. I even got to hear stuff I hadn't heard before! Man, "U Got the Look" *sucks*! :-) Love and fireworks, Riana ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 21:26:04 +0300 From: "Peter Enright" Subject: a question To: "Gary Numan" A question for Numan fans - I hope this hasn't been asked before, if so I apologise: in the track "My Dying Machine" (Berserker + Isolate compilation) I'm sure I can hear the backing singer (Tessa Niles?) start her vocals at precisely 1 min 30 sec into the song (just as Gary starts his line "I can feel the cold ..." - just on "feel"), then stop and say something then "Sorry" as though she had mistaken her cue and Numan decided to leave it in ...? I'd like to know if I'm imagining this, I hear it every time now, since I first heard it in my Walkman earphones ... maybe I'm just hearing voices ... ? Those with keen hearing, check it out. Pete Enright (tiktokman) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 20:25:45 EST From: SomaCrow Subject: bits and pieces... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Good day eh? Troy Walter, I've tried and I've failed to get an e-mail to you, so I'll say it right here in front of everybody, THANKS for the CD! It's great. My dear Jerry, Siouxsie would be a very interesting choice to remix Exile; unfortunately this might be hard to do since the Banshees broke up like two years ago. :) Maybe go for Junior Vasquez? He did a good remix of the Siouxsie song "Fear (of the Unknown)"... I'd love to see Bernard Sumner (and friends?) work on Exile. Or... hehe... Dave Clarke... ;-) Monsieur Brezniak, I'm planning to catch every West Coast show on whatever Numan tour/s come/s Stateside, see you there, alongside Miss Marlene Sr. :-) And to Pete Enright (weren't you in The Who? grin!): As to your complaints of American trash being exported to the UK, I have but two words for you: Spice. Girls. My Spice Code includes the symbol for "The last good British export was Gary Numan"... :-) But you're right, 18-25 year olds don't like Celine Dion. Fortysomethings like Celine Dion. Qu'elle retourne au Quebec... ;-) A bientot then Riana ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jan 1998 14:22:23 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) Subject: Cleopatra and me!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello. I am very excited to be working with Cleopatra on the Numan project. I have had two meetings with them so far, everything is fairly tentative, so keep that in mind when reading the following. They have asked me to make a cd cover for an album of remixes ("The Mix") which they are putting out as soon as possible. The 14 tracks are already done, they are waiting for the artwork at this point (ie: me). I will be using pictures that I took on the Teletour and photos from the fan club newsletters, as they are owned (apparently) by Gary. The first priority is the Exile album, which will be out in a few weeks. There is a promo only version of the cd now being circulated in a cardboard sleeve. The album has a bonus track (Down in the Park live). Otherwise the cd is (almost) exactly the same as the UK version. The official promo picture for the album is similar to the ones on the inside cover and back cover of newsletter 52/53 but not exactly the same (plus it's in color). There will be a release party in Los Angeles for the album; it is not known if Gary will attend, but it is possible. I am also working on a promotional poster which will feature the Exile album and the Mix cd and room for tour dates. They are booking a tour at the moment. All I know is that Gary should be in Southern California sometime in April. I am also trying to get an instore in Los Angeles during this time period. Right now I am trying to accurately guesstimate how many people might show up to such an event in order to determine the appropriate location. Once the two albums are out, they will be releasing the Sacrifice cd, with new or at least altered artwork and bonus tracks, probably from the two cd singles. Then there will be a 2 cd compilation from the Numa material (including the live cds), for which hopefully I will also be doing the cover for. After that, they will release the catalog (Berserker, the Fury, Strange Charm and Machine + Soul) with bonus tracks, probably all from the Babylon series cds which I will supply them, along with the singles, and possibly the Italian My Dying Machine remix, which I unfortunately only have on 12" at this point. The four catalog titles are the lowest priority at this point and may be released only as 'limited editions'. They only have the original albums (not the extended versions). They absolutely do not have rights to any Beggars Banquet material, so any new album with the original or 12" versions of these songs is quite a long shot. Please keep in mind that all this information is tentative, unofficial and very much subject to change. I will let you know as things progress... Best wishes, Rod Los Angeles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 06:25:49 -0700 From: Joey Lindstrom Subject: Gary's AFE Laughter To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) At 01:00 AM 98/01/15 CST, Lance Waligroski wrote: >Living Ornaments CD is released, however I really love the White Noise >album. By the way, does anyone know what Gary is laughing at in AFE? >I've wondered this for years and I'm dyin' to know since Gary is usually >very quiet. Sorry for rambling on. This is a question I've wondered about for years. Last year, during one of Derek Langsford's wonderful "Gary's Q's" sessions, I asked Gary specifically about that, and unfortunately he could not remember. However, I think the answer lies in something Matthew Holbrook told me later on. Generally, on the last show of each tour, the roadies tend to get into a rather rambunctious mood. Indeed, on the Premier Tour's final show in London, parts of the stage were collapsing, or being lifted up into the air and flying around "all by themselves", etc. While Gary didn't break out laughing during any of the songs as he did on AFE, he was definitely smiling (and laughing between songs). Since that AFE recording was taken from the final show of that year's tour, the theory, then, is that Gary was laughing at something the road crew had done. You'll notice that it didn't seem like one PARTICULAR incident he was laughing at - the laughter continued for a bit. :-) This is, of course, mere speculation on my part. Maybe, however, somebody here who was actually AT that show may remember what specifically he was laughing at, and can fill in the details. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 20:35:15 -0500 From: temp Subject: HI To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Is Gary Newman coming to Toronto,Canada in the near future. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 22:21:12 +0000 From: kevin Goodchild Subject: Hi Ya Thanks ! Basically I can almost listen to anything as long as it has a beat and isn't country. I started listen to Numan a month ago if Random counts but I also aquired a cd that said his greatest hits. It's funny because they all seem to be his singles. Some of the favorites I've also been listening to are Prodigy, Kraftwerk, Tempest 2000 (a video game soundtrack) mostly electronic. I played the drums for a about two months around six years ago but most of it escapes my memory. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 12:33:13 -0600 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Living Ornaments '79 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just curious... Has anyone ever notices that on the vinyl copy of LO79, the picture is in fact "inverted" from the way it's suppose to be? At least the half picture from '79 on the outside of the box set is correct, as well as the recent release of LO79 on CD! I guess Beggars was a bit hasty in getting the vinyl out in 1981, and didn't notice this minor inconsistency, but I noticed the moment I bought my box set back in 1981. Oh well, trivia... Love the LO79 and LO81 CDs though!
