On a Uk cable channel there is a program called TOP GEAR GTI which is all about cars and they repeat the program twice a day for one week. Last weeks program had a profile of an old BMW 7 series and while we were left to gawp at the BMW they played AFE as the back ground music. This means that AFE was played 14 times last week. I wonder how much revenue this created for the NUMA company? Lot's i hope. 2nd thing...... A few years ago "The Comic Strip" who consisted of Dawn French, Jenifer Saunders, Rick Mayell,Ade Edmundson and a few others, made a series od short film's for tv. One of these short films was shown on cable tv last week. It was called SUZIE and one of the main characters was a bloke called GARY DREADFULL who baught a farm and drove Range Rovers into trees. He was also living with a gay man but ran off with the main character Suzie. This Gary Dreadfull so i have been told was moddeled on our very own Numan apparently, EEEEEK! Did anyone else see it or remember it from years ago? 3rd thing....... I can't bloody remember.......DAMN!! Yes, you did hear 'I Nearly Married a Human', it was on episode 3. They changed lots of the music for the video release because they didn't have rights. The only thing is, I'm not a terribly big fan of the Dawn series. I've apparently won an autographed copy of "Dawn: Lucifer's Halo" trade paperback by Joseph Michael Linsner. I'm assuming for now (as I don't actually have the book in hand yet) that it's autographed by Gary, and not by the author. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I finally got the PTTA book after nearly a month waiting and i'm a third of the way through the book I'm enjoying it very much. A few surprises, laughs and a growing hatred towards the british press. What Bowie did was inexcusable. Funny thing about Steve Strange - didn't he get arrested in the 80's for stealing checks or something? But the main point I get is that Numan WINGED IT!!! If anyone gets wind of that Saturday Night Live with Numan being shown on Comedy Central any time soon - put out the word and we can all set our VCRs! The snow is falling. The coffee is hot. Good time to craft a response to the Numan digest. Am I the only Numaniac living in Moscow? Someone please let me know! I feel so alone ... I've identified most of Numan's movie dialogue samples. The intro to Outland (can't hear any Japanese dialogue - are you confusing this with the intro to "Call Out The Dogs"? - which is taken from "Blade Runner") is from "Predator" - the first few words are mumbled so I can't quite get them, but it's the bad-ass black actor warning the black CIA dude in no uncertain terms "....? muthafucker, I don't care who you are back in the world, you give our position one more time, I'll bleed you, real quiet, leave you here. Got that?" + "Payback time" is when Jesse Ventura unwraps the gattling gun just before that wonderful overkill scene where they waste a whole section of forest and still hit nothing. "Makes Cambodia look like Kansas" - is Jesse Ventura also from "Predator" + "Anytime" also from Predator - it's the sample that the Predator itself keeps replaying after observing and recording Billy the Indian as he stabs the scorpion off the CIA agent's neck. These movies was quite obviously one of Gary's favourites. I'll bet he jumps into fatigues, camouflages his face and straps on his guns to watch it. Hmmm ... not a bad idea for his next image .. Stormtrooper in drag ... ? As I mentioned, the intro for "Call Out The Dogs" is lifted from "Blade Runner" and it's the scene where J. F. Sebastian is leading Pris to his apartment. The intro starts with the Japanese "dialogue" from one of the giant hovering advertising "blimps" (which is used again over a shot of a huge advertising video that covers the entire side of a skyscraper) and continues on into the sound of Pris' heels as the old fashioned cage lift doors open, then slam shut, and Pris asks "You live in this building all by yourself?" and J. F. replies "Yeah, I live pretty much live alone right now. No housing shortage around here." There are a few other songs, can't remember now exactly which ones, I think from "Berserker", "Strange Charm", and "New Anger" that contain samples from "Blade Runner" one that comes to mind is the replicant Roy (Rutger Hauer) confronting Tyrell "I want more life (fucker" but sadly Numan cut "fucker" off.) And "You're the prodigal son". Also in the track "Puppets" Numan has used a few funky samples from "The Blues Brothers". Belushi: "...... you're gonna put me right back in the joint." Akroyd: "They're not gonna catch us, we're on a mission from God!" - screeching tyres. And the whole "I want to buy your women" scene from the restaurant. Plus where the phone box is blown up by Carrie Fisher: Belushi: "There must be seven dollars worth of change here!" And one other from "The Blues Brothers" I can't get my ears around. One that had eluded me for years (can't remember the song just now) suddenly popped up on TV one night in London - it was the Russian drug smuggler warning Arnie's KGB Colnel in "Red Heat" - "Without me, you don't even exist" Many years ago, during hours of boredom at the TV post production company I was working for in Sydney, I edited my own video clip to "Call Out The Dogs" (the extended mix) and synced up all the "Blade Runner" samples to their original film sequences - it makes a funky video! I did the same for "Outland" and re-synced all the "Predator" samples and added sequences from "Total Recall" and "Terminator" and it also makes a cool video. Does anyone know where the sample at the start of "Skin Games" comes from? - "Everyday I am feeling a little more optimistic." I use it on my answer machine! My name is Leslie Bird. I've been a Numan fan since high school, when I first saw Gary on 'Saturday Night Live.' I've always been thrilled and fascinated by electronic music, and Gary's music and odd lyrics appealed mightily. I was a Numan fan at a time when every other kid in school was into Hall & Oates or Christopher Cross (*choke*). I guess you can say I was a little ODD. I loved Gary Numan because his music was about REAL alienation, not the typical teen angst stuff that everybody else was doing. I've been a fan ever since, although I sort of dropped out in the late eighties, about the time Gary was using those 'doo-wop girls'. And of course, it IS rather hard to find his stuff here in the southeastern United States. But I just got a copy of 'Exile' and I love it, except it sounds like the drum machine has only one pattern. I also appreciated Gary Numan for his aviation interests, I'm an Air Traffic Controller, I don't have an actual pilot's license yet but I will one of these days. I'm not a professional musican (yet), but I do dabble a bit, I have a couple of analog synths but I've got a couple of digital ones as well. Ok, how about a trivia question, one that has been nagging me of late...I seem to remember watching the series 'Cosmos' when it was first on, and I SWEAR that during one sequence, I think it was time-lapse of sunlight on city buildings, that I HEARD a bit of 'I nearly married a Human'. To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Hi there, Got the LO's last week, and I am thrilled. The intro of both CD's really give me the shivers!!!! Absolutely brilliant. Spoke to Beryl last week, but apart of what we know (European and US tour, Dominion day video and single), nothing new. The Belgian website was mentioned in a music magazine and we get some feedback out of it, and additional members for the fanclub. Most of critics in the papers in Belgium were positive apart of one, so the trip of Gary over here in October was quite successful. Best title: "Everybody loves Gary Numan". No comments on the album itself though, just mentioning it was out. Anyway, the local company did its very best. Hope they'll get some airplay with Dominion Day. On a lighter note, the beginning of Machine and Soul 'We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams' is allegedly taken from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The foreign speech samples at the start of the Outland album are from Red Heat, as are the dialogue snippets on Intervals two and three - 'the people have many needs, one is law and order - other - entertainment - without me you don't even exist.' the start of the actual track Outland is from Predator, with samples from this film, Aliens and Terminator contributing to many tracks on the album. There is also a film soundtrack which supplies the whole backing track for 'Magic' - not really a sample as it includes rhythm, melody and even the little 'grunt' sounds. however, as i write this i have unfortunately forgotten the title of the film, although i do have it on video. speaking of video, has anyone seen the film 'The Prophecy' starring Christopher Walken? I suspect i know someone who has as the 1994 film is all about Angel Wars, Dead Heaven and erm, Prophecies.... Incidentally, i agree that NIN's Pretty Hate Machine was excellent - one of the best non-Numan albums i have ever heard. however, i also agree that his subsequent work has been piss-poor, and i suggest that Gary produce their next album, rather than vice versa!! Look at it this way people, Gary is first and foremost a 'pop star', and a dark nasty industrialist second. he, and we, wish for chart success for his new material but in honesty, NIN are hardly chart toppers themselves. i am not implying they don't sell, far from it, but they sell to an 'alternative' market which unfortunately is not mainstream in the UK and most of Europe. although i am sure such a move (which would doubtless entail a far noisier and less musical output) would prove successful in the USA, aren't we best just to leave Gary to produce his own work? after all, 20 years into a career against all odds, he is clearly doing something right. i humbly suggest we just accept the direction Gary chooses for himself....after all we are only fans. Exile is an awesome body of work, possibly his best, and it is slightly sycophantic for us to pontificate about what we think would be better. and as for those of you who criticise the drum loops, these have become Gary's trademark in recent times. regardless of whether they are repetitive or not, which i don't think they are (as a musician), they ARE gary numan and that is all that matter surely. are you the same people who criticised Machine and Soul for being 'too poppy' or Outland for being 'too funky.' in 1979 many of you would have slagged The Pleasure Principle for being 'too synthy'. be serious. the man knows what he is doing. let's just sit back and enjoy it and talk about that for a change. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 15:50:58 -0000 From: "downstat" Subject: Ou est Cedric? This was my first and i was very impressed with the quality and commitment shown. First, i would like to say that i have been a Gary Numan fan since 1979 at the release of "Are Friends Electric?" and i have been hooked ever since, and i have been fortunate enough (living in the UK) to go every year to his fabulous concerts. My favourite song is "You Walk IN My Soul" which is on the "Sacrifice" album and is written about Gary's new wife. He sang this live this year at his concert and had the whole hall mesmorised. Anyway, i have a copy of the "Blue Album" and for those who dont know what this is, its the "Tubeway Army" LP (normally white cover) in a blue vinal. i know its rare. What i want to know if anybody out there has a copy of this and do they know how much it's worth. I also once saw a clear vinal copy of the "Telecon" album but it had gone by the time i was able to by it...does anybody have this, and how rare is it?
