News Mailouts / LO Numan movie samples The World Wide Webb Relocates - Yes, Again ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 12:25:07 PST From: "John Orork" Subject: * Jason Smith * To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In response to Jason Smith’s posting in the last Digest: Jason – thank you for your comments about the various film samples. Yours and the other posts in that Digest probably cleared up much of the confusion for some people. However, I didn’t really welcome you even mentioning Machine and Soul. That is the worst track in the history of music – probably from one of the worst albums ever made. Most of the time it’s been somewhat embarrassing being a Numan fan. But after the release of Machine and Soul, suicide was one of the few ways out. But I guess you must love it to death – if your email address is anything to go by. You have my every sympathy. Gary publicly criticises that era – and quite rightly so. Talk of Outland also sends me to sleep because I can only really place that alongside Machine and Soul. Never were two more non-Numan albums made. They are just an embarrassment. Still, I’m glad you like NIN – although I think their recent work rises very much above Gary’s Fury to Machine and Soul output. How can you say Gary should produce their work? I have little respect for his production – although I admit that Exile does show promise in this department. But I doubt Eagle will allow him to produce his next album. And never in a million years would Numan produce NIN. You state that by having a 20 year career, Gary must be doing something right. I think his career has lasted this long simply because of the few hundred fans who buy every release and compilation. You yourself are probably responsible for 1% of his income. I gather you purchase everything – even down to his preferred brand of aftershave and sausages. It’s a sad life living yours exactly like your idol. You only get one life and you choose to live it like someone else. Also, how can we accept the direction Gary chooses – he has made so many mistakes in his musical career. And I cannot accept your drum loop comments. I don’t think any of us would have criticised The Pleasure Principle in 1979 – surely that is a Top 10 album of all time. It walks all over most of the Numa Records era. We all pay for our Numan goods and so we have a right to specify what we want out of him. If Gary cares to listen, it could do some good. Thanks for your advice Jason, but I’d rather not take poor advice from someone with an unnecessary bird’s nest living on their head. The LO '79 photo was taken at Hammersmith by Peter Gilbert - the cameras were filming 'The Touring Principle'. It's certainly Ced...maybe it's the lights, maybe his darkest secret was revealed and his wig fell off!! (OK, let's not start any unfounded rumours here) Tubeway Army was originally issued as a limited edition of 5000 on blue vinyl (actually slightly less were pressed and delivered) in November 1978. The REALLY tough part is to find copies that aren't warped as the pressing plant wasn't too hot on quality control. I can't remember if Gary explained this in PTTA. He'd already done the recordings that were later released as 'The Plan'. Then he went into Spaceward for (I think) two sessions and recorded the bulk of the album. One more session for 'Listen To The Sirens' and 'Zero Bars'. Album finished. Nick Austin at Beggars STILL wasn't happy and wanted Gary to do it again. However, Gary was already writing the synth oriented material of 'Replicas' and DID NOT want to go back to old stuff for the 4th time. I agreed with Gary, 'TA' is raw but has a really good feel to it. So the compromise was to only release TA in a limited edition and move on to the new stuff. I don't think Gary ever liked the sleeve (but was too intimidated, or rushed, to say so) so after his success it was re-issued with the white sleeve. Actually, there is a 'proof' (ie. test) sleeve that was a light, powder blue and had a london Underground style 'Tubeway' logo on the front which was removed for the proper run. - steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 23:10:46 -0800 (PST) From: princess@cyberg8t.com (Miss Marlene ) Subject: Convention and Chocolate... If there was one last year i did not see any adverts at all.{i only found out about the '96 gig due to firstly seeing a local press cutting and a pal of mine telling me he had gone.}These are the only ones i have missed since the beginning. Have you any plans to try a step into dance music.i know it a diverse subject after your style of music, but having bought the TECHNOARMY CD i beleive it would be a step in the right direction even if it was a one off.{it would be top of my Christmas list.} Anyway, won't bore you no more. Please, if Southampton is on your future gig list make the venue advertise it!!!!!!!!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 20:10:49 -0800 From: "Robert Trousdale" Subject: More Numan sample info... To: Pete from Moscow was almost complete... you left off at least one. At the start of the song "Machine and Soul" "We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of the dreams." Is from an O'Shaugnassy poem, but Gary got it from the film "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate factory." It is the scene where the kids are licking the wallpaper and Veruca Salt (Yes, the band got their name from the film character) says: "Snozberrys?! There's no such thing as a Snozberry!" To which Wonka replies (see above :-) As for the sample "Everyday I am feeling a little more optimistic... (and my subconcious mind is again ready to recieve suggestions.)" I do not know the origin, but it is also used on an obscure album called "The Power of Suggestion" released by Kevin M. Gilbert in 1988 (his latest album "Thud" is a real treat, if you can find it...) under the name "Giraffe". The Power of Suggestion, BTW, is a real heck of an album, but of course it has been out of print for almost ten years... Turns out Mr. Gilbert won some kind of MTV contest back in the 80s where the prize was a record contract. He put out two albums and then went POOF until last year when he released Thud... Certainly more information then anyone wanted, but heck, I don't contribute that often.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- escher@turbonet.com is: Robert Trousdale (509) XXX-XXXX "47.8% of all statistics are irrelevant" -Anonymous ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 10:33:30 -0000 From: "Jules Seifert" Subject: News Mailouts / LO To: "Numan Mailing List" Well, now that Nuzone is shut, and the breaking news is splintered right across the net, is anyone gonna attempt a news mailout similar to this digest, but just a one way newsfeed? Just a thought. For anyone in the London / Surrey area, you can buy LO79 and 81 over the counter at beggars banquet in Kingston, I bought mine last Saturday, and by the looks of it, it'll end up as worn as my vinyl copies (except 81 of course!), the quality is superb. I must be one of the few who appreciate the extra 'conversation' on LO81, simply because you can really hear what Numan puts through that mike of his, mistakes n'all!
