Many were outraged and saw fit to respond to John Orork's unprovoked personal insult in Digest #402. I am letting these messages go through so John can see that he is a minority of one and to get the point across that personal insults are not approproate for the Digest. Discussion, argument and debate are all fine and to be encouraged, but slagging off another subscriber for their appearance or accomplishments is not. Take it to email. Don't drag us into any personal problems you might have with another subscriber. Please do not email any more articles about this incident to the Digest. Dave and I are monitoring posts for a while so I can strike any that mention this incident from future Digests. Let's get back to real issues, information and opinions, please! Derek P.S. Taking articles out of the Digest before distribution is not normal policy, in fact it has only happened on a few occasions after being alerted to the situation after an initial post sets a flame war in motion. I know this might seem heavy handed but it has served the Digest well in the past and helped focus the Digest on topic. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. To: "'Gary Numan Digest'" Thanks to John Orork for starting a good old fashioned slagging match in the Digest. Hopefully this one will be more interesting than the boring politics and religion debates of a few months back. However, I tend to favour Jason's point of view. He wrote "personally i like everything that gary has done to a lesser or greater degree", and I have to agree with that. Some things are very definately in the "lesser" category (Observer and the Machine and Soul album come on down!!!!!). I really don't think these things are up to Gary's usual standard. However, I would like to stress that in my opinion they still piss all over most of the stuff I've heard by most other acts. I really don't see why people have to be so nasty to others simply for having a different opinion though. Feel free to disagree with me - I know I'm not God. In fact, I've made nearly as many mistakes in my career as Gary has in his :-) BTW even if you think you don't like a particular song or album, give it another try sometime. You never know, you may like it now. This happened to me with 'Conversation'. I'd never really gone for it. Then I watched the Touring Principle video for the 500th time, and instead of skipping that track as usual I actually watched it. I hadn't listened to it for 15 years, but found I really liked it now. I felt a complete and utter tit I can tell you. And on the new LO79 CD it sounds particularly good. And on a completely unrelated subject... Jason, your email address is showing up here as "epleasebob@lineone.net", not "moorlands@line.net". That apparently is what's being referred to. I have to agree, mostly, with most of your comments - and this applies to all of us, not just the person you directed them towards. Hey guys and girls, this is a Numan forum for discussion of Numan issues. Whether or not Jason Smith buys the same brand sausage as Gary Numan does may be BORDERLINE on-topic, but not if it's used to run Jason down, as it was done here. This type of posting here is disappointing to say the least. In defence of Jason, I'll say this: I can't claim to "know" Jason but I met him several times in 1996 during my trip to England for the Premier Tour - we even got together for a non-Numan reason, namely taking in the Blues Brothers tribute show in Hanley the day before I returned to Canada. Poor guy got himself a parking ticket too... :-) The guy was a perfect host and seemed genuinely eager to ensure that *I* had a good time. I found Jason to be a great, great guy. When I return to England again I plan to look him up and treat him to Pizza Hut, a place Jason regularly visits (and I remind you: Gary Numan doesn't eat pizza). Jason is different. He's a very different man than I am, and is probably very different to most of you. Yes, his cellphone is the same make and model as Gary's. Yes, he styles his hair in the same way. And yes, when he's hitting the dance floor, he's dressed as Gary. This may sound like he's obsessive, and indeed I confess I was somewhat worried about that when Matthew first told me about Jason (he arranged our meeting - I was staying in Newcastle Under Lyme and Jason lives close by). EVERY meeting I had with the man tended to dispel that assumption: outside of these "fannish" things, he is a completely "normal" guy in every respect. He does not "live and breathe" Numan, contrary to popular opinion. He's just a guy, same as me really. And like me, he's an opinionated bastard - we got along just great! :-) Jason Smith is not perfect. Some of you may consider his Numan "obsession" to be a major flaw. I consider it to be a major virtue, and I applaud the man on his COURAGE to stand up for what he believes in despite the abuse rained down upon him from time to time, including the same media that hurls shit at Gary. And, now, from some of you. No, he's not perfect. There were a couple of things about the guy that bugged me. And I know that *I* did a few things that bugged him. That's NORMAL. Think about it: think about your two best friends for just a second.... got 'em in your mind?.... ok... now, consider: are there any things that THEY do that bug you? Be honest.... now, does that make them any less a friend? Who exactly *IS* perfect anyways? I know I certainly ain't. And I think it's fairly safe to say that everyone reading these words cannot claim to be perfect either. Why can't we accept the fact that Jason's simply "different", without picking the guy apart? Isn't that EXACTLY what the UK music press did to Gary? And haven't we been bitching about that since 1978? So why is it ok for *US* to do the same thing to Jason? Give the guy a break. He's done nothing to you. In fact, a case could be made that he's helped Numan visibility in the UK music press by being as outlandish as he is. So let's cut the guy a bit of slack, ok? Jason - if you ever visit Calgary (the Calgary Stampede is very popular with British tourists!), be sure to give me a call. I've got a spare bedroom here and I'd love to return the favour and show you the sights. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jan 98 09:36:51 +1000 From: dpipe@ords.com.au Subject: European Tour To: Hello everyone... The problem is trying not to make it look like an organised event. I think we have to all realise that Dominion DAy is not going to be "MTV friendly" for general viewing throughout the day ad-nauseum. However, there are several shows on both MTV and VH1 where it will fit in very well. I think we should try and get the producers of those shows to play it. For instance, Tommy Vance presents (or at least used to) a show at around 11pm weekdays on VH1. Dominion Day would fit perfectly. However, we've got to accept that it ain't gong to be played at 5pm on their "Playing Favorites" slot. What Eagle Records should of been doing is organising various PR events for the producers of these specific shows. I would hope that they started trying to get people on their side way back when Gary first signed. ie sending them VIP passes to the London gigs, promo copies of Exile, slipping them 500 in a brown envelope etc............ Hopefully, Eagle have done all this. If they haven't, then they should be shot. I will get watching MTV and VH1 and come up with a list of shows and their respective presenters/producers. Incidently, I never got to see the 3 songs performed by Gary on the Toyah show on VH1. Did anybody catch them?? Hopefully they will repeat the performance. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 09:52:53 -0000 From: Matthew Tamea Subject: Herbie Goes Bananas To: Numannews This message is in MIME format. I for one do not want to see numerous messages between subscribers resorting to childish insulting remarks, if you want to do it, keep it as personal mails to each other, not on the Digest! Right,...got that off me chest,....Tik and Tok, may I just agree with a fellow Digest member and say that Tik and Tok were one of the best support acts Numan has ever had (got to include OMD in there as well though), I for one would love to know what happened to them and would love to see a web site set-up in their honour. I suppose it's mainly due to me also being a Robotic Dancer in the 80's that did it, people used to say it's a pity that I never got together with Tik and Tok as we would have made an awesome threesome. But I am not one to praise my own abilities, so I never thought much about it, it's only recently that people who used to watch me dance in the 80's would say that they have never seen anything more captivating or scary?! Apparently, when I would perform my Robotics people would think, 'Is it human?'. Anyway, Numan tickets for the Numan Convention, there have been rumours of late concerning the availability of tickets for this event. Panic not my friends, the only tickets that are in short supply are those for accommodation at the Hotel only. John's attitude certainly seems to have gotten up a few people's noses - especially considering he has never met me. Anyway, it meant an awful lot to have such an obvious show of support from people on the Digest and thank you all again for making the effort. We all need to stick together after all and i would do the very same for everyone of you. Best wishes Jason PS - sorry about the slight overkill on my replies last time - my server cracked up and kept telling me the message had failed so i kept re-doing it! i only realised that they had all been sent when i saw the digest! sorry about this - i wasn't trying to go over-the-top:) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 11:41:12 -0000 From: "JASON J SMITH" Subject: thanks for the support To: i would just like to thank evryone who supported me on the digest in light of my unprovoked slagging by John Ororko in the digest last week. His attitude certainly seems to have annoyed a few people - especially considering he has never met me. it meant an awful lot to me to read your comments as i was beginning to regret getting involved in the first place. now i can see that hte majority of fans on the digest ARE genuine fans with gary's best interests at heart - not merely here to trash him at every opportunity. let's stick together - i'd do the same for each and every one of you. best wishes jason PS sorry about the overkill on replies last time - my server cracked up and told me each message had failed - so i kept doing them! sorry about this - i only intended to defend myself once:) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 08:18:41 PST From: "William Wilson" Subject: Tiki and Tok To: numan@cs.uwp.edu TO P.G.Whalley, After checking out the "A,F,E" homepage,it mentiond the new "Techno army"esque album and one of the groups mentiond is "Ikon",could this be one and the same? Hi Dave, Valarian was Gary Numan in very early Tubeway Army days. He noticed the error of his ways and changed his name, but not in time for the 'That's Too Bad' single sleeve. Apparantly, the name comes from a herb, and Gary chose it because it sounded quite 'spacey'! Cheers, Paul Denman Project Manager New Media Dept.
