Not with the book or the writing but with the man. When I was growing up I always strongly identified with Numan or at least with his public image and his lyrics and sentiments expressed in his songs. I always felt like I was a bit unusual and that no-one really uderstood me. I felt alone and although I was fascinated by members of the opposite sex I was scared or intimidated by them and when I did have some kind relationship it always went wrong. Basically I felt enormous empathy with him. But after reading this book, my empathetic view of him has pretty much disappeared. I guess it had to happen, we're both a lot older now and I'm not as naiive as I used to be but it still saddens me to hear his 'honest' reports of being the meat in a japanese girl sandwich in Tokyo and stories of screwing some woman in less than a minute just to get the points. At least he has the guts to call himself a 'twat' and saved me the effort. Having said that, I'll still buy everthing he ever produces and I am sure his lifestyle and attitudes are different know he's got himself married but I still feel a bit cheated or lied to. Never mind, like he says 'Remember I am human' PS - Exile is tremendous even though I am not allowed to play it out loud at home because my wife is a practicing catholic as is my son and I dont want to cause any more offence than I have already by playing it! The trick with this album is to listen to it loud, sing along but don't listen to the lyrics too hard ! So, I know most of you read the digest..so here's a reply.. "Exile" the website, is currently in final testing stages by some of my fellow friends at WebTV..I've had many problems with the site, this is my FOURTH version, and this one better work..:-) The problem? HTML..Let me explain a bit further..I know you guys (and gals) outside of the U.S. know very little (if anything) about WebTV Networks, but it's an internet browser 'terminal', not a computer..It's used now on over 300,000 televisions in the U.S..and it's the new wave of the internet..However..some of the HTML codes I used in the site are codes ONLY for WebTV..thus, when your Mac downloads the site...well, need I explain it..ok, one word..CRASH. :-) So, until it's completely useable by all, it won't be released. As I said, it's hopefully ready this time, so keep your fingers crossed. 'IF' it doesn't work, I'm going to step up into the real world, leave my WebTV for browsing and re-write the 'darkest site you'll ever see about Gary Numan' on a P.C...which is what I should've done in the first place..but I've had so much fun...well...:-) Ok, there's the answer to that one...sorry it's taken so long..but hopefully.. I send my love to almost all of you..:-) Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 21:05:14 -0000 From: "Jason Smith" Subject: extension and religion To: on the subject of the extended mixes version of exile which has just been announced for release as raised by mark hubbard in the last digest, i find it curious that you think that such releases are 'generally the work of the mixers' as opposed to the actual artist. as most digest members will be aware, gary's extended mixes are purely extended edits of the orginal album tracks as 'mixed' by gary himself. so in fact, the extended mix of exile will technically feature moreof gary's work than the original album. i very much doubt that gary would put his masterpiece in the hands of any other remixers. although it might be interesting to see what techno army could do with it....NOT!! i take your point about eagle records though. i can understand why you and many other fans haven't been particularly impressed with them so far. they promised much in the way of UK promotion, including extensive press advertising and to my knowledge not one advert appeared. although the album did chart at 48, and as such fared better than sacrifice which did not appear at all, it is worth considering that the considerably less worthy machine and soul managed a far healthier 41 on the tiny numa organisation, which indicates to some degree how much better exile should have done, and perhaps will. the tour which gary is undertaking, the size of which remains to be seen, will go some way towards giving the album the push it undoubtedly deserves although the onus clearly lies with eagle and the way they market what is a remarkably viable piece of work. on a global scale, gary is effectively a new artist with little or no support, save for a cult following. america -where early reports suggest similar apathy in distributiona nd promotion - and obviously the UK are two strongholds to capitilise on with pockets of fans in many other countries. major markets like austrailia and europe are practically a clean slate to be worked with and i sincerely hope eagle are up to the task. i am not doubting eagle's weight or ability but i am keen to see them employ it with the man himself. with no track record to judge them by let's hope they are up to the task of supporting gary as he produces what is arguably his best ever work. i also saw the 'are 'friends' electric' site's album poll. i see the much maligned 'machine and soul' managed to take the booby prize as least favourite album but i wonder how much of that is down to gary saying HE doesn't like it. however, i do feel it is his weakest album for a multitude of reasons, although that is not a reflection on the quality of the songs therein. opinions are a strange thing. is 'berserker' really that close to being the fans favourite album? that was certainly a surprise. incidentally, i do think that AFE is an excellent site, especially with it's recent revamp. it surely takes the mantle of 'best site' in the passing of the much lamented 'nuzone'. as for the 'remind me to smile' author's curious but admirable stance on gary's (anti) religious direction, although i appreciate your views and can easily imagine how you could be offended, i remind you that exile is a body of work, - a slice of entertainment - not a life statement and should be taken as such. listening to it should not change or offend your views, especially for those of apparently strong 'faith'. i remind you to smile.:) jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 11:22:45 EST From: Hopey77@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #407 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I busted my ankle so I cannot cruise the record shops for EXILE - I may o= rder=0Ait online.... Why are fans eager to get their hands on a copy? I know it's a great song and it is one of my many Nu-faves, but is it also a rare one? I've been a d.j./ v.j. for nearly 15 years and have one of the largest collections of music videos from 1980- 1994 (8,111 to be exact), and I am proud to say I have 'We Take Mystery To Bed', 'I Die: You Die', 'Change Your Mind', 'Cars', and 'Radio Heart'. I might add that the 'Radio Heart' video is quite different from the others I've seen of Gary's because there are two sizzling hot babes in mini-skirts dancing and lip syncing. Gary is also cutting the rug himself. Very American and very eighties. But, the question that I'm trying to get at is: Who is the heck is the members of the band in this video and where did they come from? I'm 20 years old and I'm a student at the university of Newcastle. I became a fan of Gary Numan last year when I rented "The Premier Hits" out of the local library. Before that, I had only heard AFE and Cars, and I thought that was all he'd done. But after hearing the songs on the premier Hits, I was hooked. I was ver interested in how different the songs sounded from year to year. I have since bought the double CDs of Telekon/I assassin, Tubeway Army/Dance, Pleasure Principle/Warriors, Replicas/The plan, (all at a very good price-stlg15 each for about 30 tracks!), Berserker, The Fury (found with gerat difficulty at Indie shops), and Exile. But apart from a very cheap Receiver compilation, I don't really have an idea of what's happened between 1985 and 1997. My bank balance is suffering as well! Hopefully the Numa box set will help but then there will still be the IRS stuff to find (no shops seem to have them). I am generally interested in electronic pop, mainly from the 80s, such as Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Human League..... However none of them are quite as good as Gary numan. I just can't believe I didn't discover him earlier. Usually the crappiest band won. I only saw the very tail end of it all, where they recap all of the bands for that show, so I don't know what song it was. It seems though, that I saw four members of the band, when I had always thought them to be a trio. As for the nerve medicine mentioned in "My Shadow in Vain" - Roche 5 is the name etched on Valium tablets. I remember hearing that lyric as a lad, then finding a bottle of Roche 5's in my father's dresser drawer. Aha, "more Roche 5 than pain", now I get it! Having seen a few of the Newsletters, I certainly wouldn't describe myself as the avid fan that some of you seem to be. I only go to gigs nearby (either Glasgow or Newcastle - I live in Edinburgh, that's SCOTLAND for anyone who doesn't know), I buy every release that doesn't leave me thinking "Oh good another compilation, the same old tracks in a new and exciting order". And I choose my own sausages. I don't play an instrument, so I can ignore that bit. Fave artists include.... Metallica, Aerosmith, Pistols, Depeche Mode, John Lee Hooker, Nirvana, Queen, Alanis Morrisette, Blondie, and on and on. Anyway, intro over. In response to Mark A Hubbard, I must say that generally I prefer the extended mixes of the albums, although as far as I can recall, most of them have been re-mastered by the man himself. I do think that the Remix albums (eg Techno Army) are poor, though. As to spending money on promotion rather than a remix album, although I admit to not knowing what I'm talking about (!) I doubt the cost of remixing an album would come close to the cost of mounting an *effective* advertising campaign. I say effective, cos one black print ad in the corner of a back page of NME is going to make sod all difference. RE: Stevies responses to "I listen to Gary Numan...", the one I usually get is "Is he still alive, then?" And one of the most annoying is "You must be pleased to see Cars in the charts again". I am back from a one-week business trip to malaysia, a land that's economy is growing up very fast. The location was Subang, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur. (We installed and tested some software parts used at the new builded up airport KLIA 50 kilometres outside KL.) One evening we went downtown KL into the Hard Rock Cafe. I weart the Exile Tour Shirt and someone of the stuff said "Oh, Gary Numan - I know him". And as a normal Gary Numan Fan, I always look for Numan material wherever I am :-) So when I was in a bigger shopping park called Sunway Pyramid, I found the best of GN (1978-83, 1984-92) and surprisingly Random (One). But whereas I never found the video "The Unborn" in London, this video catched my eyes while walking through a video section (?!?) and I bought it for about 35 Ringits like 18 DM or 6 Pounds. (You know the financial crisis in that region!) P.S.: I normaly favour dainty girls with darker or black hair, so I have seen so many nice girls and one very very lovely one. Does anyone knows the minimum time a man (should) need to fall in love? I am too strange for myself ... So now I walk a line between melacholy and depression ... They are my FIRST choice of listening on nearly all occasions. Whilst future success is to be hoped for, we really should not completely forget past glories. When I first joined this list Gary was up for a role in a film call Kinsmen. What ever happened there? DARK CITY - Is this a film of any quality? Is it likely to get a cinema release in the UK? Or is it more video/satellite fodder? Finally , to return to my opening statements , I don't really think that Gary is ever going to hit the heady heights of 79-83 again. I can only hope that his releases remain enough of a money earner to justify their continued production. I will buy everything he releases ( except for Cars remixes ) , but time has passed both myself and Gary by. Lets not build our hopes up of a meteoric rise , supplanting the Spice Girls. It ain't gonna happen. Just struggled back from a week's trek into the isolated anti-Taliban rebel-controlled hotspot of the rugged Pamir mountains in remote northern Afghanistan where I slogged for days through the mud and snow with 20 other cameramen and journalists as we documented the recent earthquake disaster there. I listened to LO79 about 50 times on my trusty Walkman, the music made our situation even more surreal. Now I have some questions for any die-hard fans out there: I seem to remember that on the original LO boxed set (mine is locked away somewhere safe in a sacred Aboriginal cave in northern Queensland) the live versions of "Random", "You Are In My Vision" and "Bombers" were not included. Can anyone confirm this and any other differences between the new CD release and the original vinyl? Terrific stuff, a real kick-arse version of "Conversation" and "Metal", but note how "Everyday I Die" is beefed up on LO81. On the Pleasure Principle tour that Gaz did in Sydney, May 1980, he must have added or changed those electronic cymbals (sorry I'm not a musician so I don't know what they're called, but they look like cymbals lying horizontal on tripods), because whichever band member was playing them was really giving them a hammering, and a group of screaming girls had gathered at his feet at the edge of the stage to cheer him on whenever he started pounding them like there was no tomorrow. (During "M.E.", "Conversation", "Cars" and "Fillms". The point I want to make is that they made a great ear-splitting sharp CRACK! sound that shook the teeth out of your skull, and unfortunately that sound is not reflected on the LO mixes. I'd never seen them before or since, but they were a great gimmick for the tour. Continuing on my "sausages" theme from a few weeks ago, I'd like to suggest that following fast on the heels of his successful autobiography, Numan could publish his own cookbook titled something like "50 Ways I Like To Saute My Sausages And Other Assorted Culinary Tips From Gary Numan" or "The Complete Numan Guide To Cooking For Serious Sausage Connoisseurs" or just simply "Numan's Tuckerbox". It could feature a special section called "Beryl's Favourite Dishes" and "Tony's TV Snacks", and "Gemma's Mega Fry-Ups", and include a new re-mixed CD of modified versions of his tracks you should play while you are preparing this sumptuous feast for your friends. Songs like "She's Got Crab's Claws" or "Everyday I Diet Coke", or "I Dream Of Fries" or "I Die You Fry", or "Down In The Caff" or "The Soy Circuit" or "Are "Friends" Toaster Oven?" or "Remind me To Chew" or "My Shadow In The Fridge" etc. You get the picture. And what to drink? The Chablis or the Claret? Maybe Pilsener? Oh that's right he doesn't drink. Pepsi Light then. A special BBQ companion could also be released in Australia - "Gemma's Friends" was a great title, or perhaps "Gazza's Down Under BBQ Guide". A specialist companion could be "Around The World In 80 McDonalds" in which Gaz could give us his personal ratings of these fine eating establishments. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Any suggestions welcome. Pass the ketchup please. BTW, I am a serious fan. Honest Guv.
