Well ... I said I 'felt' lied to or cheated - hey these are just my opinions and those feelings were the feelings of a shy teenager nearly 20 years ago - I never said they were true, just how I felt at the time And now reading the book I have lost a certain part of the image that I had created in my mind that's all Besides which I dont remember him writing a song called 'Lets f**k anything in a skirt in less than 1 minute' - he contrived an image as much as I created one, a lonely isolated image where sexual contact was difficult or machine like and involved pain on his part - not much of this is true from what I read in the book Just my opinions anyway Cheers, Mark Winn ------------------------------------------------------------ Position : Principal Systems Analyst Company : SWi Pte Ltd, Singapore WWW : http://www.SWi.com.sg/~mark/ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 22:51:32 -0600 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Dawn: Lucifer's Halo To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I finally got the scoop on the paperback book I won from the Beggars Banquet contest "Dawn Can Make You A Numan"! I shall have the book in about another week, and it'll be signed by the author, Joseph Michael Linsner; and NOT by Gary :-( In any case, I'm still open to offers for this little gem. Remember, this is a paperback book called "Dawn: Lucifer's Halo"; and NOT the CD "Numan Dawn". I'll entertain offers to buy it, or trade something (just about anything) for it! I'm not really a fan of the "Dawn" series of books, so this autographed book really has little meaning to me. I'd much rather trade or sell the book to someone who is more interested than I am. I can't help but wonder what many of us, given a similar situation as Gary was in, with women literally throwing themselves at your feet, would have done. It seems to me that you are being a bit hyprocitical here. After reading your comments, I visited your website, I saw the pictures of your beautiful wife and adorable child, I also saw something else, something that I could not for the life of me understand. How can you say what you say here about Gary Numan, while at the same time on your own personal website you have links to these wholesome sites: Big B, Bild, Brad, Hot, Persian Kitty, Sexy, Angel, Cool Babe, Lesbian, Femmes Je Vous, Aimes, Adult, After Dark, Babes, Naughty, Persian Kitty, Playhouse, Smut, Hustler, Penthouse, Playboy, Playmen, Babe of the month/week, shall I go on? Please do not moralise to us on one hand about how perverted Gary Numan is while you yourself are engaged in guiding visitors who visit your own personal website to the aforementioned sites you are personally linked to. Think about it, you may discover you will have a more empathetic view of Gary Numan after you have first examined your own. Of course, I could be right.... Back in, oh, 1980 or so, a local news station here in Minneapolis used the instrumental portion of (I think) "Tracks" as background for a promo. It was apparent that they felt that the fast, bouncy, happy part of the song was the perfect thing to highlight how fast, bouncy and happy their news crew worked to get the big stories to loyal viewers. Always wanted to know who at that station had a copy of "Pleasure Principle." And since this is my first posting to the digest, I suppose I should give you the obligatory "got into Gary after seeing his 'Saturday Night Live' appearance" thing. I was 15 at the time. I think the last dealie I bought of his was "I, Assassin." Figured he just got out of music after that, so it was really cool to discover his web site a couple years ago. I've been trying (mostly in vain) to catch up with everything that's been going on the past decade or so. I *am* planning on going out of my way to find "Exile," though (aren't you all so proud of me?). This is no small deal for me, since I kinda listen mostly to bluegrass these days (there, I said it). At least he has the guts to call himself a 'twat' and saved me the effort. Well, I read the book and just thought that he got up to all the things your average (heterosexual) male would do, given the same opportunities - he was offered it on a plate many times and took it. He reacted just like your average man in the street might - which is, at the end of the day, what he is, after all. > Exile is tremendous...I am not allowed to play it out loud...don't listen to the lyrics too hard ! As was said by Jason - it ain't someone preaching - all it is is an exploration of an idea that he had, and felt was interesting enough to explore on an album. So many people seem to think the lyrics are a personal attack on their beliefs because they declare an opposing viewpoint. I don't believe in molesting badgers, but if someone sang about it, I wouldn't take offence. And before I'm assumed to be the usual atheist attacking religion - I do have my own beliefs, but they are mine; as far as I'm concerned, everyone else can make their own mind up. And really...no offence intended, Mark. From: Jamesy999@aol.com Subject: Gary Question >Hello Gary, On your next tour... WRONG PLACE TO SEND IT! The box set sounds like it will fill in a lot of gaps for you - but the IRS stuff is all long deleted - 2nd hand is going to be your best bet. From: paddygav@kcnet.com (Paddy) >Hohokam...It seems though, that I saw four members of the band, when I had always thought them >to be a trio. They were originally a 4 piece when they did support on the Berzerker tour and at the release of their 1st single "King" on Numa. Then one left and they did Harlequin Tears as a 3 piece. After Numa, the singer left and they turned into a bigger band complete with girlie backing singers (no releases though, I don't think) when they played a gig at The Flag in North Wembley sometime later. Lets not build our hopes up of a meteoric rise...It ain't gonna happen. I hope you don't get flamed for this, 'cos I think you're absolutely right! From: "Peter Enright" >I...remember that on the original LO boxed set...the live versions of "Random", "You Are In My Vision" and "Bombers" were not included. The original boxed set was 2 albums - 79 and 80. With ten(?) tracks on each - they were just excerpts rather than a full show. The 79 version of Bombers did appear as a b side to Complex, though. The 80 material is not on CD yet, due to that nice Mr Webbon from BB (!) being unable to track down the original masters. LO 81 more than compensates though...tops, brill, ace! >On the Pleasure Principle tour that Gaz did in Sydney, May 1980, he must have >added or changed those electronic cymbals (sorry I'm not a musician so I don't know >what they're called, but they look like cymbals lying horizontal on tripods), >because whichever band member was playing them was really giving them a hammering At the risk of sounding a right trainspotter... :-( ... they were most probably Synare IIIs - an electronic percussion thing (obviously!) - a bit like the better known Syndrums (think 70s disco....think "BOOooo!!" noises). And it was Ru Ru Russell who whacked 'em presumably (as it was him in the UK gigs!) :-) I'll take me Anorak off now.... >The point I want to make is that they made a great ear-splitting sharp CRACK! sound that shook the teeth out of your skull, and unfortunately that sound is not reflected on the LO mixes. Probably just turned down and eq'ed in the mix, maybe. >Continuing on my "sausages" theme from a few weeks ago... Those moscow nights must be VERY long, eh Peter?! :-) Can't really see Gary doing anything too complicated with sausages anyway - "just cook 'em!". From: Moral >And the sound track to Micro Music on CD...Being able to hear the whole night in crystal clear CD >quality sound is quite wonderful. Aren't the versions of those songs THE best ever ? Too right! That was exactly how I felt when I got mine. 81 is an utterly brilliant album. The versions of Metal and My Shadow In Vain on 81 (to name just two) do big wee wees over versions on other live albums. >I read/heard somewhere that the extended versions are not actually extended remixes...Gary has to >edit the version he ends up with into the version that gets released... Did I imagine this or does >anyone else remember hearing/reading this ? Yup - I remember reading that somewhere as well - probably in one of the old Gary's Q's? I do not know what is going on over in the U.K., as I don't live there, but at least give them the credit that the album is now released here in the U.S., and will reach a much broader audience. This may not seem like a big deal, as was with I.R.S., but a friend of mine who loves Nine Inch Nails and knows everything there is to know about Trent Reznor also knows about Gary Numan, and is going to purchase "Exile". OK, I should have been more specific about what I meant here. While Numan indeed does his extended versions himself, which may or may not always be the original versions before they are cut down to LP length versions, most artist do not. I had not heard for sure on this case, whether or not he was doing these on his own, since the new deal with Eagle came about, it might have changed. My basic point was not so much that, but rather, to do the extended AND a standard version costs Eagle money. Now in a later post in the same #409 digest, someone else said that the cost might not be that much. Well, actually, it would be no more or less than for the original released LP version. You see, if they were already recorded BEFORE Eagle signed him, then they had no money in the recording sessions etc.. Now, their responsibilites fell onto getting them pressed, and then the marketing. So at this point, the overall cost would be the same. I am just saying that they will have to pay again, when they could use that money to promote their newly signed artist, and then after thye help boost the LP sales, they could continue to remix, remake, remodel. All in all, I am just confused about how the whole thing has worked out. Most artists release a single first, get attention, then follow up with the LP, or do a simultanious release. Numan has done this in years past as well. Now, the UK single seems to be coming out 4 months after the LP release. I know I do not live in the UK, so I can not see or hear or read about any publicity that might be getting done, but from what I understand, it is very little over there. BTW, anymore word as to possible US dates and locations for shows?
