Dave Datta sent me the following summary of Digest subscriber locations. We've topped the 500 mark for the first time. Five of the world's continents are represented. While it is unlikely we'll get any from Antarctica (most people are only visitors to the place), South America is the only hold-out. Until we get a Spanish or Portuguese version going, it's unlikley we'll attract the attention of internet users there. I hope you find this info interesting. Mark suggested that Gary's lyrics about sex didn't match the reality. I assume he's talking about the 1978-79 "alienation" stuff and possibly the= 1981 "bitch" stuff. He was a (fairly) typical teenager prior to 78 and th= e victim of a cruel scheme in 1980. That doesn't make for a life philosophy= - he's just reporting events. = During 1979 Gary got famous and did what virtually every pop star has don= e before - fucked everything in sight - shock, horror, lucky bastard! He then wrote lyrics like: Send in dreams, lovers on corners, clean my sheets (1980) I don't remember if she's black or white (82) Hotel rooms, sweet dreams like slot machines (83) Send in someone else, I'm tired of romance (84) I don't remember if her story's true (85) etc etc etc etc etc Sexual psychology aside, I think this high-lights a broader problem. = People cling to the early "machine" era as the defining period for Gary.= This is very blinkered. If you want to search for a definition of Gary Numan, the best you could do is play his 15 proper albums back to back. I'd go on but I've forgotten what my point is. My brain hurts. I'm off to= watch the Ricki Lake Show. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 01:25:54 +0100 From: "laszi" Subject: addresses? It's an autographed copy of the book "Dawn: Lucifer's Halo" by Joseph Michael Linsner. It's autographed by Linsner; not by Gary. It's a soft cover book with over 200 pages of color illustrations with the "comic" style story line to boot! If I remember right, it's been mentioned in a few different places (including the commercials) that the movie was made by the makers of "The Crow." Which means it'll at least have the small cult following that The Crow has interested in it.. Just to let everyone know as well, the soundtrack comes out here in the US on Tuesday, I believe. I'm intending on picking it up, mainly since I've decided that I'm going to become somewhat of a Numan freak and buy everything released in the US as of about a month ago. (Sam Goody is in the midst of ordering the US version of Exile for me as we speak...) That reminds me, a funny thing happened today... I went to a friends house and he had the words "Dark City" written on his hand. We talked for a little while, then he looked down and said "Hey Brad, guess what? I saw an ad for a movie called Dark ..." and I cut him off saying "City, which features a song by Gary Numan which is from Exile. I've known about it for about a month or two, due to the mailing list and two different commercials for it, both of which I have on tape." :) My friends are actually watching for Numan for me, which is rather cool... (Yet another thing came to my mind.. Here's a special public like thanks to Tania (domtat@aol.com) for taping "Exile", "Tubeway Army" and some other Numan stuff for me. I really appreciate it. Does anyone know if this is *the* Down In The Park? You know, the one the Foo Fighters covered, the one where the machmen meet the machines and play kill by numbers? If it is the classic in question, has anyone heard it? Is it worth investing in? Also, a few weeks ago there was a disc at HMV (the one on 34th Street in NYC) called _Black Heart_. It was a compilation, but I didn't recognize all the song titles. Did anyone buy this? Well, someone bought it because it's not at HMV any more, but my question is if someone on this list bought it? If so, how is it? What is it? Where the heck did the song Black Heart come from? One more thing - I'd like to add my voice to those who are exceedingly grateful for the Living Ornaments discs. 81 is especially welcome, since that was a most important concert, and I've never had the opportunity to hear it before. I, too, always have thought of Gary as a lonely man who tinkered with synthesizers and stuff...Who ever would figure he would be 'sexually active'..gasp.. But, that just goes to show what lyrics to to us as people, sometimes (especially when we're young) we take the lyrics as pure 'truths' and then form the ultimate image of that person. Thanks to the book, we learn differently. Gary is human. He did do some rather stupid things, but I would probably do 'some' of the same things he did if I became a multi-million dollar superstar in 6 weeks. You have to relieve stress and pressure somehow, and we all know one good thing that takes care of both problems..Sex. Gary had the opportunity, took it, and had a lot of fun at the time with it. :-) (and by the looks of it, he must have been pretty good at it, or he wouldn't have been in a sandwich, he'd be solo on a plate..) Listen to 'the need' and think about it. if you had been on any of the uk tours from 79-93 you would be surprised at just how tame the revelations in 'praying to the aliens' . for your sake, i am glad it gary chose to write it that way. gary expressed regret at his past exploits but he is now a happily married man with a beautiful devoted wife. he is hardly likely to write how great it was to shag around is he? 'something's coming, oh no.' - what could he have possibly meant? oh no...how RUDE! jason smith ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
