Howard" Subject: To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I just read digests 410, 411, and 412. I was surprised how sexually reserved some Numanoids can be. Like some mentioned, given the same opportunities I may have been just as much of a "twat." For all any of you know I have been.;-) Why is it OK to accept coy homosexual references in his early lyrics, yet not OK to accept his real life sexual exploits? Why can we snicker at "Everyday I Die," but lack any sense of humor when we find him referring to himself as the meat in a Japanese sandwich? C'mon people!!! I have yet to see Dark City. A friend told me he saw the promo that listed Numan with the other recording artists featured. Like so many I too am anxious to know just what of Gary's music was included on the movie, and what will be released as part of a Dark City soundtrack album. Soundtrack albums tend to be big revenue generators. It might not be a bad idea, if the music is from EXILE, for Gary to do a video promoting a single from the soundtrack. The promotion will help his career, sales of the soundtrack, and sales of EXILE. What label is releasing the soundtrack? Does anyone know? I am also interested in finding out which booking agency is handling the booking for Gary's US tour. I'd like to see if they can be convinced to book something in my area. If anyone from Cleopatra out there would like someone to help with marketing and/or promotion in Tennessee, I'll work cheap!!!! I've yet to spot any mention of EXILE or Gary Numan in Billboard. I've been checking the 200 albums chart, the dance charts, the modern rock charts, and the reviews. Where's the Publicity? Where's the airplay? I sure hope the promotion staff at Cleopatra is prioritizing this. Who's in charge of marketing at Cleopatra anyway? Well, I'll keep checking. nothing is real and nothing is new these days... -Jerry V ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 03:45:38 EST From: NewcombG3 Subject: bad files To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I missed the last five or so digests because when I download the attached text files the file with the .txt extension is all garbage. If they were there, I missed them. I enjoyed the film but felt a class action suit for false advertising should be taken up by all Numanoids. Oh well, at least he made the soundtrack on the CD and got a credit on the television promo. I know it was mentioned before, but what exactly is the status of the movie Kinsman which the man was supposed to have a part in? Was the film completely scapped, postponed, or was Gary just cut? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 21:50:32 +0400 From: "b. koski" Subject: Dark City, Dominion Day single and Conan likes Gary... What a load, Gary wrote this song long before the movie came > round. :( That sucks... Numan's song, the fact that the movie is created by the director of The Crow and the person that will be attending the movie with me are the three main reasons why I was waiting to see "Dark City"... Oh well, guess everything can't be totally perfect. > BTW- where the hell is the US single/video? Why is Cleopatra and Gary doing > this promo thing backwards, album out three-4 months prior to the single? I'm > lost? If I remember right, somewhere or other I heard that we'll be seeing the single at the end of March, which is kinda late.. It would be a tad bit better, at least in my opinion, if it was released a bit earlier, due to the promotion that Dark City and the few recent U.S. television mentions have given/will give him. That reminds me, recently on M2 I was made aware of/saw half of an ad featuring Conan O'Brien talking about "Cars" being his favorite video, due to the melody of the song. I'm not totally sure what he said, but once the commercial airs again and I get to tape it I'll gladly send a transcript to the list... b. koski -- http://www.izzy.net/~bkoski -- aim/aol: bkoski7 icq: 3332492 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Mar 1998 09:56:45 +0100 From: DE VISSCHER Luc Subject: Exile (more) To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" I hear a lot of remarks concerning the drum loops on Exile. Though it took me a while to love the album, indeed I still think that the drum loops are a bit too similar so that there is not enough diversion on the CD. (My favorite track is "Dark" by the way) The best way to overcome this is to start with a basic 'band' again and with a real drummer. Also, I think it would be good for Gary to have a producer for his next album. But one that allows him to work in his own genuine style. It might be a help to have some new ideas. I am off course *not* talking of a producer like Phil Collins (I don't want Gary to sound like that crap) or - God behave - a Stock Aitkin Waterman (?) kinda thing, but a producer like for instance Rupert Hine might be nice. I am also very grateful to BB to have released the LO 79 and LO 81. Especially the intro on the latter is something that'll never come back. The sound, the vibes,... No nostalgia, just very good memories... Bye for now, Luc, Belgium > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 12:51:46 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: Exile-Unbelievable! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I have just found out that at HMV in Newcastle, they are selling copies of Exile for stlg6.99 (about $11?). It's less than half of what I paid for it. Being a university student I feel a bit cheesed off! Also, I am interseted in putting together an all-time poll of Gary's songs. Since I am new to the Digest, I'm not sure if this has been done before. And even if it has, Exile is probably not included. What are people's opinions on this? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- They crawl out of their holes for me...... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Mar 1998 18:20:00 -0800 From: alexander way Subject: Faces merging: Gary Lewis & Jerry Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I was watching a series of taped interviews with Jerry Lewis this evening and I realised that I really do admire that person. In fact, at times, he seemed to me kind of Numanesque. I'd like to propose that Gary Numan has something in common with Jerry Lewis. I am a fan of both. Not equally though, as I'm more of a Numan than I am a Lewis fan. But having said that, I've come to the conclusion that there exists a common thread between all the things that I really like in pop culture. Both Numan and Lewis present characters, aspects of themselves no doubt, that are equally naive and wide-eyed as they are slicksters that know more than they'd have you believe. Jerry has some of Numan's robotic/neurotic sexuality and Numan has some of Jerry's goofball/shaman. As people, I would suspect that both men are true survivalists. Artistically, they both have found their own uniqueness and have delivered it, almost without pretense, to popular culture. They've done the same thing with their hairstyles--and in this respect I would say that Numan and Lewis are more alligned than Numan and someone else, say Sylvian. And choice of sunglasses and approach to clothing. Their "sexual ambiguity" has something in common not only with David Bowie but with Bugs Bunny. I don't want to forget to look for that quality that's so beguiling in product Numan and see it elsewhere. Thinking on it, I don't think that there's a Dean Martin equivalent in Numan's career. Certainly it isn't Sharpe. Nope. But who? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 21:22:18 -0000 From: "Tony Clark " Subject: gary's exploits To: "Numan Digest" Hi all, i dont want to get boring, but over the last few weeks many numan fans have been commenting on Gary's sexual conquests as described in his autobiography. Well, to finish this tired topic off, im not sure about Numan's image in the USA, but here in the UK, Gary Numan was always considered a homosexual. When Gary first became famous, all the media and the public said that he must be gay because of his image and makeup, and being a fan, i got continuously teased for being his fan. i had always known Gary wasnt gay (not that i have anything against gays), but it wasnt easy being a fan against all this predudice against gays in the UK. Now that he has officially written about his sex life, i can wave this autobiography in all those peoples faces, but I only wish he made his antics more public in his earlier days, so i could have been saved all the grief. So to finish off, i can say that when i read the parts about his group shagging etc..i was overjoyed that he is as 100% red blooded male as we all are, only we dont have half the chances he had. Ta Ta for now..If anybody in Wales wants to email me for a chat about Numan, please do, as i dont know any Numanoids in Wales. How are we all. Well Numan reaches his 40th Birthday this year, and it made me wonder how long he can go on. I remember at the end of the Dream Corrosion tour he nearly chucked it but bottled out, Thank F**k. I was there and can remember almost filling my pants before I realised what had happened. Listening to the live album of that gig, I still get a shiver down my back. It was a brilliant show and to me was as much a landmark in Numan's career (in a positive sense) as Wembley was (in a negative sense. He's been resurgent ever since. Having read PTTA, it seemed to be the end of all the difficult stuff from the previous 7/8 years. Since we are now looking back on a 20 Year career, it seems a good time to review it by everyone listing a Numan Top 10, I realise this has probably been done before but since I'm new to the list, I'd be happy if you indulged me for a short time. NuWorld says there's to be a US tour come May... oh great, right when I've got AP exams! These are the cities Gary'll probably play: New York City Boston (Panic in) Detroit Minneapolis (???? lotsa Nooman fans there, doon'tcha knoow) Chicago San Diego Los Angeles San Francisco Seattle Vancouver Toronto Maybe one other city... That makes FIVE West Coast dates... I weep for joy. :-) So apparently there's concentration on three general areas: the west (California uber alles lads!!), the Great Lakes area, and a little bit of New England. Pretty modest tour - would stopping in the South be that bad? ;-) See what you've given up, David Pipe?!
