To: Hi, I have only been on the internet for about three weeks and have been particularly impressed by the number of web sites dedicated to Numan. In recent years my interest in his work has dwindled, as after purchasing 'Machine and Soul' I realised that I was only buying the albums to add to my collection and not because I actually liked them. A number of things have rekindled my interest of late. The release and media interest of Random, the many web sites (which are of a very high standard) and the possitive comments from various sources, of the 'Exile' album, which has prompted me to go out and purchase it. I have also read with interest of a number of new releases and reissues in the pipeline and would be grateful if anybody could give me any more info: 'Fury', is this or any other albums going to be remastered. 'The Mix', what is it and will it be released in the UK? 'Tubeway Army/Blue Album', I have heard that this will also contain the Roxy bootleg. Is this correct and will it be released the the UK? Also, could anyone give me any info on the 'R3' project? I tried to access the site but it would not let me. Thanks everyone. First I hope this little diatribe about myself is not an unwelcome addition to the ongoing threads, but as I have been able to finally find other Numanoids I am excited to contribute to the list. I am a 33 year old American , recently relocated from Los(t) Angeles and now residing in Portland Oregon. I have been a Numan fan since the Pleasure Principle came out in the very early 80's and have been a huge fan and collector ever since. I have my own web page for more about my personal likes, info and all at http://members.aol.com/lestatdelc As to "downstat"'s question "This is the second or third time Conan O'Brien has been mentioned in the digest. Who the hell is he????", allow me to answer. Connan O'Brian is an American talk-show host on NBC's late night show "Late Night". This is the same show he took over as host of, when David Letterman left NBC network to CBS. So in short, he is a fairly famous talk-show host on one of our late night talk/variety shows. Regarding the thread about the "content" of Gary's new album Exile, I must agree that while I am an agnostic with very atheastic leanings, I also beleive that if someone's faith can so easily be rattled by the though-provoking "theme" of a music CD then there faith is certainly held together by the flimsiest of threads. I personally do not mean that as an insult, but I have difficulty in relating with such blind adherance to what on the most fundimental of levels is an absurd concept. While the "humorious" way of observing the absurdity of western Judao/Christian beliefs (as someone else on the list has previously pointed out) would be all to easy a thing, were the state of the "human" condition not so tragic. In fact one of Mark Twain's most wry and funny short works are of this very subject (if any one cares to read it, it is called "Letters from Earth" and well worth the read). All in all, I think Exile is a wonderful CD, and a welcome addition to my collection. I eagerly await the chance to finally see Gary play over here in the states this spring, and pray (to the aliens? wink) that he plays a gig here in the Northwest. If not Portland itself, at the very least Seattle. On that note, if and when anyone should get the info on the dates and venues of the aforementioned tour here in the U.S., I would very much like to know. Again, hope I am not taking up too much bandwidth rattling on, but great to be a new subscriber... adieu Mitchell Gore ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Mar 1998 22:52:44 -0000 From: "Mr Smith" Subject: here we come To: I've done things that God should have questioned just a quick note to say how much i enjoyed the broadcast from stockholm. i was well pleased to see Gary had substituted Friends for Down in the Park as the opener. No, I am the chap who turns the fuking television off when it doesn't suit me. Furthermore, if you don't think that television influences the way people think, there is obviously no hope for you! I think it is perfectly fine for me to question my own beliefs, I love debating religion and philosophy (from all different sides, I might add). Listening to a compact disc, to me, does not really constitute a debate. The impression I seem to be getting of late is that it is okay to attend Klan meetings (sorry to contiue the racism thread of my rants, but it is something I really have no tolerance for, so it works for me) as long as I listen to thier ideas but don't join. Perhaps a bit over doing it, but I'm really not going to appologize for having a belief system and trying to stick to it by denying myself something that I don't feel fits. Why is it that you assume because I didn't buy Exile that I haven't listened to it? Would I (and others of my opinion) be catching the same hell from digest readers if we just thought the album sucked from a musical standpoint? If it will bring an end to all of this berating, I think the album sucks musically. Is that better? Since I am, at this point, defending myself for defending someone else, this will be my last post on this subject. Fear This Idiot! I purchased a video card that has Video RCA output and a 16-bit Sound Blaster. I ordered Real Player Plus, downloaded and set it up. Thus, I was able to hook up a VCR and a TV to my computer to tape the show. I wasn't able to get the full screen effect because of the 20 kbs transmission rate. I was hoping the show would have been broadcasted at 100 kbs, but anyway. The show played really well, thanks to the T1 line. I started taping the show via the server in the US, since it was the closest. I got cut off somewhere during that Cure song that was played before the show. I then connected directly to the Stockholm site and it worked fine. I missed the first minute. I haven't been able to watch the entire tape yet, the picture is kinda green for some reason and the sound is not at a high level. My views on Outland: Not like any other Numan album i've heard. Soul Protection is a Janet Jackson rip off, Dark sunday is too weird, Devotion is awful, and Dream Killer is boring (sorry if I've offended anyone). I manage an independent CD shop and called the promotional dept. at Cleopatra to request P.O.P. material (posters/flats) to help push sales of "Exile" in my shop. The woman who I spoke with sounded as if I was bugging her by offering to help SELL the PRODUCT that her EMPLOYER was offering to the public. Other than an ad in Alternative Press magazine I have not seen anything to help let the public know that Numan is back. Cleopatra did send me one new-release newsletter that had Gary on the cover. I made 100 copies and made sure that my customers know that I sell the new Numan CD. Here's a thought...why can't GN get added to the Lalapalooza summer tour? I am sure that it costs $$$, but you have got to spend money to make money. All readers should contact their local modern rock/college radio station and request songs from "Exile", you could even request "Dark" from The Dark City soundtrack. If fans are expecting a continuation of "Random" with "Random 2", then you will indeed be disappointed. If you're a completist, then you'll buy it anyway. If you like club music as well as Gary's music, you might well enjoy "Random 2" as I am. "Random" was for the most part was a covers tribute album. OK OK, I know Beggars put the double CD out as 'interpretations' and not covers, but at the end of the day, I still call it a covers tribute album. Most of the tracks still followed Gary's original songs (with the possible exception of The Orb's interpretation of 'Jo The Waiter'). "Random 2", however, is a fine collection of dance mixes based off of Gary's original compositions. DJs are a different bunch all together IMO, but I can't help but dance around when I hear the tracks on "Random 2". I use to enjoy going to clubs (I'm a bit older now and away from that scene), and think any number of these tracks could be played at any dance club, and people would definitely dance to these tracks. For what it's worth, I think Beggars has done another fine tribute album to our man, Gary (with the exception of spelling Dave Clarke's name incorrectly on the back cover). If we all send an e-mail to: gorm@moonfire.se, than we have a good chance to see the gig again. -------------- MACHINE + SOUL - THE GARY NUMAN-WEBSITE FROM GERMANY -------------- http://www.herten.netsurf.de/~klaus.sauer/MachSoul.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 09:10:06 -0000 From: "Craig Land" Subject: What Are You Looking For? To: Further to my previous mail stating my extreme delight in the release of Random 2, I would like to say that I fully respect all the other Digest members opinion's on this album. What I would like to know is what do those who do not like this album expect from a remix project release? I for one do not expect to hear any similarities between the original and remix tunes. A project like this should be different, if you want to hear remix's that resemble the original tracks, buy 'Techno Army'!! And finally, it would be far more constructive of Digest members to refrain from using words like 'rubbish', 'tosh', and 'doo-doo' just because something is not in line with their personal taste. There have been some quite marvelous releases in the music world, but just because we don't like some of them, it doesn't mean they are rubbish! If anyone wants to say hello to a big English chap in the USA, I will be over for the Kraftwerk gig in LA on June 8. Outa here, Craig. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
