I would like to say that I am really pleased for all the US fans out there who are feeling as excited as we in the UK do when Gary tours. There are many of you out there and deserve a visit at long last. We have been spoilt for years here, so have a great time everyone. I hope to be at the San Fran and LA gigs so may catch some of you there. Secondly, can we lay off all the religious attacks. We, as 'individuals' have the right to think and do as we please. Therefore, some people may be happy with Garys approach to Exile and some may not, BUT it is totally up to the 'individual' what they think. We can't knock Gary for doing EXACTLY what we all do in our everyday lives. As he said in Newman Numan 'If you get a number one hit in Britain, a million people love you, but 59 million don't' !! Lets just do what we do and respect each others 'Morals'. We are all 'Friends' in here. Bye for now............... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello out there...let's see, how can I do this without boring you all to death? Thanks to my friend Gregor Torrence I've been vicariously enjoying the Numan news since it began. He has kept me up-to-date, seeing that I was a self-avowed "techno-peasant" until just this month. I've finally caught up with the world and am now functionally wired. Who am I? well, these labels seem to fit at the moment - Lisa Yimm, 33, bisexual, Buddhist, leatherdyke. Currently employed as a Medical Photographer - I take pictures of the insides of people's eyeballs for a living. Formerly employed as an underpaid, underappreciated promosexual. I am a casualty of the behemoth that is the Music Industry - 10 years as a radio dj, 4 years as a club dj, and 4 years doing marketing and promotion for independent record labels, as well as freelance photographer, writer, and reviewer. Rabid defender of Gary Numan even when laughed at. In 1990, I burned out on so much glitter and ash, and left my glamourous job in the industry to return to photography full-time. I think I'll stop here - otherwise I'm likely to rant and rave about the injustice and stupidity of the music industry until forcibly gagged. Gary's music is the cornerstone to the soundtrack of my youth. It all began with Saturday Night Live, February 1980...I have seen him in concert twice - in San Francisco, November 1980 and October 1982. I have (i believe) a complete collection of Numan on vinyl/CD. Including Gary I have a fairly wide range of musical tastes....Gene Loves Jezebel, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Sarah McLachlan, Tackhead, kd lang, Midge Ure, to name a few. I play the turntable, the radio, and the CD player. Finally, I want to say Thank You to Derek Langsford for being a light in the darkness all these years... Matthew Roberts is definately one...ah, the rest of you know who you are. I personally could care less about his or any other atheists beliefs (or lack of). I do care when I, or any other Christian, is called a name like "stupid idiot". That was the whole point of my first letter. "Stop the name calling", that should have been a clue. I would like all atheists to know that I do not believe in them. I do not believe they exist. Sighting that, I'd like you to read the following lines: Atheists are simple humans with no souls. They are petty little beings with no ability to dream. They are easily angered when their lack of beliefs are challenged. They are outcasts. Atheists are narrow-minded, spiritually challenged children that pretend to be intellectuals. They speak out in anger and contemt. They hate and disguise their hates, angers, blasphemies and obscenities as art. They demand that we tolerate as they tolerate nothing. What you just read does not matter one way or another. It's just a statement. It's not true because I do not believe atheists exist. I have also noticed that nothing angers an atheist more than quoting scripture. So... "Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you."- The Acts 13:41 I am not so arrogant that I believe there is nothing in the universe larger than man. Do you want to believe in extraterrestrials? Try God. I'm sure some hot-headed, angry atheist(s) will have a lot to say about this one. They've done a lot of disecting the last. I don't mind. Say what you will. The louder you are, the more you can be seen for what you really are, angry little people. For those of you that do believe: "But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." -First Timothy 6:11 Believe what you may, God loves you anyway, Ken ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 14:59:55 -0800 From: "D.G." I walked to the venue and when I arrived Gary was signing albums of german fans. There was one man who asked Gary to sign over 30!!!! albums(12 inch too). A man (african style) passed by, took a paper of the street and gary signed it too. I'm sure that man didn't know who Numan was. When Gary and 'Big G' went into the venue I just followed and so I could see and hear the rehearsals of the band for 5 minutes until someone told me to leave.(shit) I hadn't eaten yet and went to MC donalds. Big G came in to get some hamburgers for Mr Numan. 3 hamburgers (without cheese) a coke and french fries. At 21.00 the show started. The place was bigger as the venue in Paris. There were more Numanoids too, between 200 and 300. The atmosphere was great, after Gary played 'Cars' the people really began to become NUcrazy. I amused myself very much, the show was the same as in Paris exept for 'glass' and 'fragile'. Again a synthesizer wouldn't play but nobody really noticed. I was standing in front this time (what I normally don't do), but I had a place where I could sit, (on stage) because I was tired(when the sow started I stood up ofcourse!)Wrong move to stand in front! When Gary performed 'Down In The Park' some girl became slightly mad and ran towards the stage acting crazy. She was shouting in my ear and tried to crawl on stage. Big G told her very kindly not to do this and she listened. The PA was very LOUD and I mean LOOOUUUD. Now 18 hours later I still have problems with my hearing, you could really feel the bass. It still amazes me how good Richard Beasly kan play and how good it all sounds. Everything sounded more agressive as in Paris .Or was it because I could hear the guitar of Rob on his monitor. Germany convinced me that they love Numan, that's for sure. Oh yeah, Big G told me a European November tour later this year is VERY likely. (I never thought of going to do 4 Numanconcerts in two weeks time but it is really worth it, Numan is better than ever, he did some good thinking for the choice of his songs, a new style, ... It is very possible that his program does not get 'exported' outside the US, like Tonight Show, etc. However, with Conan's presence on the web, they can still experience his hilarity. The best site I have found (by a fan) is Grant's Conan page. http://www.gcresearch.com/conan/ Here, you can see the 'bumpers' (the things they show when they go/come back from a commercial) and review lots of other tidbits including 'If they mated' and 'In the year 2000'. If they mated is a most hilarious bit, where Conan shows what the outcome (baby) would be if two hideous/outrageous people 'mated'. In the year 2000, is simply outrageous predictions that you have to experience. There's also a lot of characters, from Pimpbot 5000 to the Masturbating Bear. Conan has done a lot to promote bands that don't get played on all the other shows. He was the first to have The Breeders on national TV, as well as a slew of other bands. Oh and not to mention something else everyone may not know about, but he regularly has Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa on (Frank Zappa's kids) and they are hilarious. Truely the Tom and Dick Smothers of the future. So check out Grant's site if you are curious about Conan. It has several different links. Like the ongoing religion debate about "Exile" I am 32 years old, and trust me, my belief systems have been pulled many directions over the years. If you were to read the lyrics to "Exile", vs just listening to them, they do sound more like an attack on religion, vs. "hmm, lets take a look at what if." Also, for a person not to listen to Exile due to beliefs, is no worse than a person saying, I will not listen to this group called "the How-to's of Rape" just because I do not believe in rape. I do not have to think that I will be swayed by them if I listen, but I do not have a desire to listen to them reval in their ways. 2) a few people have talked about the let down of the "idea" they held about Numan after reading PTTA. Well, keep in mind that you do not have to like a person, to appretiate, and enjoy their art. For years, Numan has taken on the stance that his Fans did not make him (yet, without them buying his albums, going to his shows, etc., he would not have had his money)and that is good. They may have made him famous, but the did not "make" him. He is who he chooses to be. I must admit, that after years of listening to him, I was let down in '88 when I flew over for the Metal Rhythm tour, and could not meet him.. But I still liked him, and his music, but I in no way held any ideas about his person. He is an artist, and as most artists, he is not a run of the mill person. 3) is there anyone on this list living in or near Leamington Spa, Warks ??? 4) who is planning on the Chicago show???? LMK, as I would like to meet as many folks as possible. Well, take care all!!!! Yes, I suppose if you have never had someone play the role of Dream Killer in your life, it would mean nothing. I used to play that record every night, in the early hours, and sing it to myself at work, which is where I met my Dream Killer. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Except for my recent re-subscribe post re-introducing myself, I haven't posted in over a year and a half...and I see the same topics are discussed over and over and over again. Oh well... considering the number of people on our planet, and the number of Numanoids, it is safe to assume that they shall go round and round again and again 'till we all just fade away. Speaking of fading away...I am glad that Gary is not. He's my man and always will be. His music just does it for me. What can I say? If he does not believe in "God" that is his choice, though it does sadden me. But other close friends and I assume some of my family do not as well, and that saddens me, because I do. A major problem about this is that people over time and presently give belief in God a bad name. Wasn't it Ghandi who said something like "I'd be a Christian if it wasn't for the Christians?? Regardless who said that, it rings true for many people. Can I change this myself? Only in my life, and in my example. One step at a time. But my faith does not waver because of someone else's opinion, or song...My faith is not that weak, nor hangs from a thin nor shallow thread. It does however make me more aware of other people's perspectives, and that I must respect them in order others to respect mine. Gary's music has meant much to me in my life, and to some degree helped shape who I am today, especially my musical taste and the kind of music I write. It has also helped shape my faith. It helped me question and test my faith, and my faith is stronger for it. So I believe that Gary and God are working together in some way, whether he knows it or not. :)Besides its just good music!!! On a side note, I am rather tired of "religion" being used in conjunction with what I believe, as to be regilgious is to do the same things over and over and over again, much like this digest in a way...hmmmmmm...anyway, I think of my beliefs as, well beliefs. A living growing thing that changes over time as I learn more and more. Try to tell me not to listen to or like Gary because he is just a marginally good musician, or that he sucks, or that his music is cold and emotionless, or all the other negative things people have said about him...and it will never happen...I believe in Gary, I have a faith in him. But he is not my God. So imagine the kind of faith I have in my God (Yaweh, Jehovah, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost...pick a name) and it is an infinite times greater than I have in any man. Even Gary or myself. I know this was rather long, but I felt it had to be said. I will no longer discuss this in the digest, but will accept personal emails and such to discuss this or anyother aspect of life. My email is glensutton@mindspring.com Thanks for your kindness. A few weeks ago, I finally got a hold of 'Exile'. It's a great CD, regardless of the sillyness of ppl putting it down for it's "anti-god" theme. What is wrong with not believing in god? I don't! Also, why do the good things in life have to be associated with god? Things that are good happen because of ppl, not an omnipitant force. In anycase, it's a great album and shows that Gary has matured ahead of his time again. I'm excited that he is going to visit the US for a tour.. which is great! I can only hope that I'll find a way to get to where he is. There does need to be more support for the 'Exile' album.. I had to goto several cd stores just to find the album. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all! I was recently at the Kraftwerk website and found a Kraftwerk desktop theme. Has anyone ever found a Numan desktop theme? Or felt like making one? I would make one, but am not quite so talented! :-) Keith Scott Kethscott@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 06:45:50 -0800 From: alexander way Subject: One person's opinion of The Goth Bag To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Is each and every Numanoid absolutely comfortable with putting Gary Numan into the Goth bag?? It must be a huge bag. He's always been hard to classify but because his "sources" seemed so obvious, he was easy to dismiss as a Ultravox-Bowie-Kraftwerk fan with a synthesizer and mascara. What are some examples of Goth--NIN, Ministry, The Cure, Marilyn Manson? Maybe he deserves to be called Goth since Goth pop music draws on Christian concepts of guilt and sin and turns that into a fashion statement. Gary loves fashion statements. Perhaps this is what Gary's been doing recently. But, does it make it that much easier to classify him as Goth, as opposed to something else? Is Goth actually better than "new wave has-been?" I hope he gets over Catholicism and Christian Issues by the next record so the association might lessen. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 16:47:01 EST From: Jamesy999 Subject: Random 2..Is it Tosh, Rubbish or Doo-doo ?????? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Craig Land Regarding your coments on Random 2. I'm one of the ones who say that Random 2 is "tosh","rubbish" and "doo doo". I say this because Random 2 is "tosh", "rubbish" etc. I thought the idea of a remix project was to ,at least, bear some sort of resemblance to the original artical (even the slightest). Not just a collection of "boink, boink b, b, b, boink" noises (oh no another nose bleed comming on !). In no way, shape or form does Random 2 sound like any of the original songs...oh yea sorry ..They used Numan titles. Perhaps these Producers are big in the Dance World, I don't know, but did they even bother to listen to the Numan originals. (Oh no, I feel a slagging comming on from other digest members).........;-) Be gentle with me ...... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu All: What, has this become the 'Conan O'Brien Digest' all of a sudden? I'm curious about 'Random 2' and looking forward to hearing it. I wanted to read some impressions, so thank you to those who shared them. I've been on holiday and have yet to peruse the last four Digests. Good to see Gary going strong, and excited to see him coming back to North America! We are blessed after all! To my friend Peter likely lost in Siberia (remember Vladivostok is EAST), sorry if you missed Belgium, but hey--you made it to Austria, so this year hasn't been that bad. Hope you get more out of your CNN collegue! ****************** REMEMBER FALCO ************************** / Stephen Austra-Beck ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Mar 1998 09:16:32 EST From: stevie@uk.ibm.com Subject: US Tour......ya beauty!!!
