To: Greetings from the nose bleed land of Techno! In response to Tony J's comments to the list reference report backs on Random 2, lets just say that some of us, although not having the ability to quantify why something is rubbish or tosh, will just have to accept to differ between other list members. It appears that some people expect to hear a resemblance to the original Numan tracks, I for one don't. I want to hear something new. In the case of Random 2, from musicians who have the ability to understand the Numan concept and yet produce their own up-to-date compositions, even though it may be dance orientated. Technology has moved on since Numan's early days with the Moog's and Prophecy's, and in today.s world the way people are using electronics does not always appeal to everyone (the boink, boink's!). In a sentence of final defence, please do not associate Random 2 with nose bleed Techno! This is something totally different, and if it were that, I for one would not be praising it's content!! >From the one who understands Techno! Craig. PS. Monday 30th March has been set for months to be the release date for Dominion Day - Gary Numan's first single release on a major label for 7 years, and his first single since the start of the true Numan renaissance. What a pitiful piece of marketing/promotion. No reported sitings of the video on MTV, The Box, or VH-1, let alone terrestrial channels. No mention at all of the single in any of the UK's weekly music press - no editorials, no adverts, no reviews. No reported sitings of the single being played on the radio, either national or regional. No flyposters up declaring *Gary Numan, the pioneer of electronica, is back. Often copied, Never equalled. Check out his new single Dominion Day.* Nothing. Even the Numan fanatics are in the dark. Our purchase in the same week is essential if the single is to be pushed into the lower realms of the chart to ensure momentum. Are we to troop down to HMV on monday morning or not? No mailshot from the fan club (which is still the only form of communication with the majority of fans). Not even an update on NuWorld. Yes, Yes, I know, - Beryl and Gary are busy on tour. But if the whole marketing push relies on Gary and Beryl being behind their desks, then we can forget about any degree of success for the single. No offence to either Gary or Beryl, but relaunching Gary's career relies on a sustained attack by professional publicists. It should not rely on the artist himself and his mother. Is Dominion Day being released on Monday or not? I hope that it isn't. It's probably been put back a week or two. The question is, will Eagle and the Numan Organisation ever get their act together? In contrast, Simple Minds (whose situation in the market is not too dissimilar to Numan's) have a new single out soon. I think its called Glitterball or something similar. I'm not a fan of SM, but its received enough promotion for me to know that they have a new single out, and for me to know roughly what it's called. I've even seen the video three or four times. This promotion hasn't just happened. It's been MADE to happen. Ironically, it is now a fact that Gary's backing band get more promotion than Gary himself. This week's NME contains an advert for John Foxx's tour in April. The ad includes the line "Support on all dates *DIG* - featuring Gary Numan band members including Ade Orange". I previously didn't know that John Foxx was going on tour. I might now go and see him at Shepherds Bush. Solid evidence that adverts work! Have any adverts been run in the German/French/Dutch music press for Gary's European tour? From what others have reported on this digest, there's been nothing. Eagle Records and The Agency have relied on Telepathy instead. Come on Eagle - do something. You can start by sending an e-mail to this internet digest telling us what the state of play is regarding the Dominion Day single. Do you want us to go down to our local chart return record shop to buy your product on Monday or not? The address is numan@cs.uwp.edu. Your message will then be e-mailed to 600 Numan fans around the world on Sunday 29th. Go on. Surprise us. To: "Gary Numan" Brussels was great yesterday. AGAIN the portable keyboard which is linked to the Alesis Quadrasynth and Korg M1 via MIDI played by David Brooks didn't work! Gary's microphone didn't work for almost half a minute at 'Cars'. Friends of mine who don't know Numan, but bought 'Exile', were very enthousiastic. Went to the afterparty, talked to Numan, (3 songs are ready for the next album which is going to be released in 1999), it's going to be much more live-played. Talked to Richard again, the man is really fantastic, and Steve, also fantastic (told me he normally plays blues!!!! and was VERY looking forward to go to the US), David Brooks was very horney-looking at some girls...and disapeared. The band said, Gary is a great man to work for. The only thing that bothers me is that Gary didn't introduce the band (on the 4 concerts I went to), because for me, this band makes the difference between a good and FANTASTIC Numan-concert. They all play at high level. Steve's style ( better as 'kipper') keeping it very simple but agressive, The power of Richard, the look and quality of Ade(wearing BONO-liked sunglasses) and David always moving and headbanging.( wearing strange tiger-contactlenses, Gemma was wearing them too). To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" At the concert in Utrecht I had a chat with Richard Beasley. I wanted to talk to him because since Dream Corrosion I became a big fan of Richard. He was very kind and thanked me because I told him that after he joined the NUMAN-band Numan's music was MUCH better. I told him it was a shame he wasn't on Gary's 'EXILE'. He replied with: On Gary's new album there is going to be much more played live, less sequencer and I probably will be playing on the new album too! That's the best news I heard in years, imagine the powersound of richard.(should have been done since 'sacrifice') A friend of mine who's a drummer too was very pleased to see the man play. (I told him he had to hear him play). For me, in Utrecht Numan was more vital as in Paris and Cologne. Still for me 'Paris' is still the best of the tour. The concert was great as always. Again there was something wrong with a keyboard and during 'An Alien Cure' mistakes were played but noone really noticed.(during the chorus a keyboardplayer was completely wrong and it lasted for about 30 seconds before he was on the right track) So for the rest of the concert the keyboardplayer (not Ade Orange, forget his name) didn't use the the portable yamaha-keyboard anymore. Love ' Films' so much! (the Dutch crowd went wild during films, metal, ...) That's all for now, I hope in America enough people show up because it's really worth it and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.(and we all have). Up to Brussels, Joeri Peeters Belgium. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 11:35:56 +0100 From: Klaus Sauer Subject: Dominion Day-CD To: Gary Numan As a reply to the question of William Wilson I can tell you this: The first "Dominion Day"-CD-Single is out now. Someone once again raises the (seemingly perpetual) "I won't buy Exile as it offends my beliefs" statement. Someone else says "open your eyes and your mind". Reasonably cordial (well, kinda...) at this point. Someone else jumps in and says Christians are all small minded, blinkered individuals and resorts to name calling. Mathew Roberts proclaims himself arbiter of Digest content by saying how bored he is with it - then proceeds to tell different portions of the Digest membership what he thinks of them...very interesting THAT was... And now we have "Ken" - who tells us all he "doesn't believe in atheists", then proceeds to insult and bait them...him and Mathew would appear to conduct themselves in a similar fashion (even if that would be anathema to them both). Ken's message - ooh, surprise - not a hint of Numan content to be seen. Whether either side of the argument is right or wrong is immaterial - could we PLEASE stop the religious debate?! Whether we do or don't believe was done to DEATH several months ago - and I can't have been the only one driven to the verge of unsubscribing. I don't like _Outland_ (could also be _Warriors_) because it doesn't agree with my belief system. My musical belief system, that is. In fact, most of it *offends* my musical belief system. It does indeed challenge it, by giving my brain the distinct feeling that sandpaper is being rubbed against my cerebral cortex. Would I be a better person if I listened to it? You think so? Why?? In short, I don't like it, and I don't listen to it. Now, why the hell do any of you care *why* someone doesn't like a song or album? You can like/dislike it because you're Christian, atheist, don't like funk, don't like wailing female backup/saxophones/Kipper/Numaballads/etc. These are elements of taste, for which, as the saying goes, there is no accounting. To each hir own. Vive la difference. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. Personally, tree-thumping, running-naked-in-the-woods-chanting, pentacle-slapping, former-atheist Pagan that I am, I think that all religions and ethical belief systems are needed, or they wouldn't exist. I don't think all of them are right or good, and I promise not to get any further into that here because--drum roll please--THAT TOPIC DOESN'T BELONG HERE. And it never gets anywhere. And it's boring. And even if I think a belief system is wrong, I still regard the person holding it as my equal and worthy of the same respect I think I'm worthy of. I really like _Exile_. I really don't like _Outland_ (or _Warriors_). Is it because I'm narrow-minded? Could be--I find it rather sinful to deal with funk on certain levels. Do any of you really care? Maybe, but get a grip and calm down. Go watch TV or get a life. We're all Numan fans and we don't have to agree. Gary's done a lot of music over the last twenty (yow!) years, and there's room for all of us. Good grief, let someone say they like or don't like a song or album and say why w/o challenging them on it. You're not going to change anyone's belief system here (either way), so you might as well respect each other's views. And lastly , on the other interminable thread re: Gary: Twat or Not?--I certainly have no moral judgements on how he behaved behind closed doors (mirrored or no) with other consenting adults ever. However, come on, haven't many of us been just a *little* disillusioned, at some point or other, with finding that Gary was a bit more human than he had made us think when we were fifteen or sixteen? I know I was. It was a long time ago, and I've been disillusioned about a lot of more important things since then, and it's really OK, but I did sympathize, whether or not I sympathized with the precise reason the original poster did. Ahem. I feel better now. zg Ziggy's House O' Vermin zigi@teleport.com --------------------------- "Come, apple-sweet murmurer! Come, four-angled frame of harmony! Come Summer! We managed to see Tony and Beryl, whom later on we met again in the Mc Donalds. There was a starter which wasn't too bad (considering some of the previous support acts) named "Clan of Xynox" (I think), heavy synths and very 'The Cure'. Gary was in excellent condition, and I have to admit I like more and more the new "Friends" version. The "Metal" sound is absolutely fabulous. For some reason, "We are glass" was dropped from the set. The concert was over at about 12:20 am, and it's a 1.5 hours drive back to Brussels. So, I was in bed at about 3am (had to take a shower before going to sleep), and I'm in the office now... I feel a little numb. I was happy to have met Klaus Sauer from Machine and Soul website, and David from Sydney. And some Dutch people I had lost contact with 15 years ago. Well, I'll see them back tonight for the Brussels gig. For Brussels tonight, I know that between 1,000 and 1,500 tickets were sold. So Gary's very right to end up in Brussels, since this was his most popular European country. Called the venue yesterday, and the music when you're on hold was Exile!!! Great. So watch out for next review of the Brussels concert. The game pits 2 sets of two people against each other for musical trivia based on the music played on the radio around the time they would have graduated college. They had a catagory where they say the name of an artist, and then the contestant has to spell it. The contestant that answered had gotten nothing right nearly all night, but this she really slaugtered. The host said "Gary Numan", to which this contestant replied, "Randy Neuman, R.A.N.D...." then proceeded to spell Randys name, not Gary's. Well, it was fun just to see his name pop up in another place. Still not seen the Pop-Up-Video for Cars yet, but they rerun them so much, it should not take too long. Its about taking certain parts of songs, taking some parts away, adding bits of your own, and creating a completely new take on it. In a way, its using the original track as the foundation for a completely new song.. To those of you who see techno as "boink boink" noises, then I guess you're all over 30 ! :) Andy -- http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~joekeith/mouthfull.html -- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 19:28:48 +0000 From: Alan Ross Subject: Religion and on and on... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello again. I've just come back from a fortnight (sorry, that's 2 weeks for denizens of the US) in Washington State and I was kinda hoping that the God thing would have blown over by now. Ho-hum. Personally, I don't know whether or not I believe in God, but I despise all organised religious cults (and I include christianity in that). I also don't accept that this is the forum for discussion of God/Religion, so if anyone wishes to continue on this theme, send personal e-mail, but I expect something on an intellectual level and no personal abuse (probably too much to hope for, I know). Anyway, on my second day in Seattle I found a copy of the NUMAN/DAWN CD (woo-hoo) at a Comic Convention and bought a DAWN book along with it. I have to say she challenges Jessica Rabbit for 'Top' Female Cartoon Character. Has anyone else out there read the Dawn comics? I would be grateful for info on which comics are in the book and which I still need to buy. Thanks in anticipation. I also got to see Dark City (OK, not brilliant, didn't bother with the soundtrack) and saw Exile on sale in a couple of places, so there seems to be some 'product' out there but no obvious promotion. I did get a bit fed up trying to explain who Gary Numan was every time I went out with an EXILE T on, tho. If there's anyone from Seattle out there, you should have gradients marked on your street maps... Finally, anyone interested in some sort of Quiz (just for fun, and my Nu-knowledge ain't brilliant so I probably won't challenge the more ardent fans)? If enough are interested, I'll give it a try. I thought we were Numanoids not Theoligists(spelt right?) So why cant we give it a rest? or should we start a Holy War to enforce our opinions on each other? I dont want to complain or moan about this anymore. Im just greatful that "WE" (as in Gary Numan fans) have a place to go since there are very few people on this planet that share this passion with gary the way that we do ... I looked at the tour schedule, and, disgusted by my lack of funds and the lack of proximity to Phoenix of any of the shows to Phoenix, abandoned out-of-hand the idea of going to the show. But now, it looks like I may road-trip to LA, but I TRASHED my copy of the digest that had the tour schedule, and I CAN'T find it. So please, someone with a kind heart, tell me when the LA show is. Thanks! -Chris Devine, Lurker extraordinaire -- 'You're right, of course,' said Trefusis. 'I see that now. We need lawyers. Wave upon wave of them.' 'Well of course it's very easy to mock ...' 'It's certainly easy to mock some things,' agreed Trefusis. 'Oddly enough though I've never found it easy to mock anything of value.
