Enjoy! Derek ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Derek, Just got back from the European Tour so here are the answers to the Digest questions. Bye for now, Gary Numan. ------------------------ Troy L. Walters , Frankfort, Indiana, USA Q1. I'd like to know if there is anything that YOU would like to do while touring the US that WE, your fans, can help you achieve? For example, I know you enjoy racing. So, if you just happened to be in or near Indiana at the end of May you might wish to take in the Indianapolis 500 and some fan could assist in the arrangements and possibly tag along for the day. You would get to experience a little more of America and fulfill a fan (or two's) dream. I understand schedules are tight during touring, but there are always possibilities. A1. Touring is not the gentle working holiday that some people seem to think unfortunately. Virtually every minute is accounted for. I start work soon after waking up, interviews normally. They take me up to soundcheck time which can take 30 minutes to an hour. After soundcheck I usually have a few more interviews which often last until 30 to 45 minutes before show time. It then takes me about that long to get ready. After the show, in Europe anyway, we were on the sleeper bus within 30 minutes of the last song finishing and usually travelled through the night to the next city. It's hard enough to eat properly let alone be able to get out and see anything. On rare occasions, if anything is cancelled at the last minute, I sometimes get an hour or two to myself but that's about as good as it gets. The only way I can truly achieve what I want to achieve is to work my arse off for the next two years. If things go well I can then spend some time doing things outside music. It's a nice idea but unlikely to ever be possible. ---- Luc DE VISSCHER in Brussels, Belgium Q2. How many copies of "Exile" were sold in the UK, and have you any information concerning European sales figures? A2. Afraid not. I don't follow sales figures anymore and I'm not too sure I would talk openly about them even if I did. As this year progresses I will probably check to see if all the touring is having any effect on sales but it can often be a bit depressing and demoralising if things aren't going too well. At the moment I'm thinking positive and assuming things will be much better than they were before I signed to Eagle. ---- Craig Land , Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK Hi Gary, Ever since I can remember, it has been commonly known that you have a love for American cars, and quite understandably I might add! Apparently, a UK TV station recently interviewed you regarding the two American cars you own. Q3. What are these, and have you made any modifications to them? A3. I have a Corvette and a CJ-7 Jeep. Both are black and completely unmodified. To be honest I love a number of cars, most of them European. Ferrari, Lambourghini, Porsche, Jaguar, Bentley, Caterham, Aston Martin, Lotus to name but a few. I'm not quite the car fanatic that some people assume actually. The idea of talking about American muscle cars is way beyond me. I don't know a split diff from a leaky radiator. I have virtually no idea how they work, I just like being in them from time to time. I am also an American car lover and currently drive a black 1989 GTA Trans Am, (if you know your cars, you will be aware that this is the Corvette based Trans Am). I will be at the Numan convention in March as I live in Milton Keynes, and will be bringing this car to the event. If you are interested we could meet and talk American muscle, if possible I would like to get a photograph of you beside my car. Finally, a good friend of mine runs a freight forwarding company in Heathrow, Middx. His partner went to school with you and tells me that you re-wrote a David Bowie set for a school play. Q4. What was this and do you remember it? (My informant tells me that your creative skills were absolutely amazing, he just remember thinking, "This guy is a genius"!). A4. Wasn't me. I avoided school plays like the plague. Many thanks, Craig Land ---- Phil Marsh Acton, West London, UK Hi Q5. How did you find meeting John Foxx after all these years after the last Shepherd's Bush gig last year and was that the first time you'd met since the period of your initial success? A5. He was much more fun this time. Easy to talk to and not at all somber and overly serious which is how I remember him from before. I only met him once though so my memory of him then is likely to be a little foggy. I wish him well with his new album and tour. Q6. Have you had chance to catch one of his live shows in the last few months, and if so what did you think? A6. No but he's touring again this April, with Ade Oranges band 'Dig' as support, so I will probably see him soon. Q7. Did anyone again suggest you two work together on something? A7. Not yet. I doubt I would have the time this year even if they did. I also don't know what kind of music John is making at the moment and that would have some bearing on any possible collaboration. ---- Cary Wiltz a Chicago, Illinois native living on the North Carolina -South Carolina border, USA Q8. In light of the new movie "Dark City", and the song "Dark" appearing on the CD of music from and "inspired" by the movie how did the producers go about asking you to supply a song for it? A8. I was asked by TVT Records if I would like to have 'Dark' featured in the film (if possible) and on the soundtrack album. None of the songs suggested for the film were used although they all appeared on the soundtrack album. I think the film suffers for not using any of the tracks offered. Mine would have worked well and the Course Of Empire track is excellent. ---- Martin Oxenham Bracknell, Berkshire, UK. Q9. Who determines what support band is used on your tours? Is it yourself or do you rely on other peoples judgement to give a review which can be relied upon, especially as they are mainly unsigned bands. As a Numan fan I look for a synth type band running along the lines of your music. As an artist I suspect you go for the opposite to give a variation to your concerts. What is the procedure for selection. A9. It varies. Sometimes I choose from tapes sent to me. Sometimes they are chosen because they are supposedly popular in their local area. For the forthcoming American Tour in May Cleopatra suggested Switchblade Symphony which was fine with me. In Europe the local promoters used local support bands where they felt it was useful. Martin Oxenham who's been a Numan fan since buying his first single - We are Glass. ---- Michael Knapp Columbus, Ohio, USA Q10. When I'm composing, sometimes the lyrics are first, sometimes the music comes first, or sometimes both come simultaneously, how does it happen for you? A10. Music first, lyrics last. Virtually without exception. When I have a skeleton framework of the music, chords, arrangement etc, I sing a guide vocal to try out various melodies. These vocals never use lyrics. I make up noises that sound like words to make sure that the phrasing fits the music perfectly. I then make the final lyrics fit the noises on this guide vocal. Thank you, Michael Knapp ---- Jeff Tolva (The Machman) , Elgin, Illinois, USA. Q11. How was your honeymoon in St Lucia? Where did you stay on the island? What did you do (that you can tell us about)? Did you go for a "day trip" on the Brig Unicorn? ;-) A11. The honeymoon was okay although I felt that the locals were too aggressive and rather arrogant. We didn't do anything unusual really. Snorkelling, Wet Bikes, banana rides, doughnut rides, Para-sailing that kind of thing. We went with another couple who are good friends of ours. They were married in the same place as our wedding about two weeks after us. They were more unlucky. He (Andi) scraped himself raw when a big wave dragged him along some rocks and she (Claudia) fell off a horse and broke her back. Claudia is now okay but it dampened the honeymoon somewhat for all of us. We did go for a sunset cruise on the Brig Unicorn which was beautiful. Q12. Are you thinking of making any videos from "Exile", other than "Dominion Day"? If so, what other "Exile" tracks would you like to do videos for? A12. The word from Eagle is to wait and see how things go. I would like to make a video for 'Absolution' personally. Or 'Dead Heaven'. Many thanks as always for your time, Gary! ---- Tony J London, U.K. Hello Gary.... Q13. On your next tour in the U.K. what about a Live/cover version of Palmer's "Addicted To Love"........and do you think that it's possible (via Nuworld).....to request Numan songs for you to play ????????? A13. I don't want to play other peoples songs, I have more than enough of my own and I always struggle to choose what to play. Adding cover versions would make that process even more difficult. It's possible for people to send in ideas for songs but I doubt I'll take much notice. People usually come up with very obscure stuff that only means something to them or the more obvious songs that are impossible to keep on doing year after year. I did try this once via the fan club and it was a complete disaster. Thankx T.J. ---- Claus Stirzenbecher Munich, Germany. Dear Gary, Q14. Any chance you will play some of the extended mixes of "Exile" on your upcoming tour? On your last London concert I felt a song like "Dead Heaven" would benefit from an extended length... A14. Not really. I think playing 8 or 9 minute songs in a concert is a little self indulgent, especially when you are playing to an unknown audience. In Europe I had no idea what the audience would comprise of. Older fans coming to remember their youth? New people who had never heard of Are Friends Electric? It was difficult coming up with a powerful and interesting set list that would sound as though it belonged in 1998 and yet still include many of the older songs. I don't think that playing long versions of the newer songs would have been a sensible move. The same problem will apply in America in May. Anyway I get bored of a song after about 5 minutes when I'm on stage. I think in general that people would prefer several songs of 4 to 5 minutes than a few extended tracks. Q15. I'll be on your shows in Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Do you already know where your after-show-parties will take place? :) A15. Oops. A bit late with this answer although I couldn't have told you anyway as I didn't know until long after the tour was underway. The only after-show party was in Hamburg and that was organised by Eagle and Public Propaganda. We were told about it when we were in Stockholm. It was a good night, especially as the Hamburg audience was one of the best on the tour. See you. :) Claus -------------------------- Gary Numan Machine Music Ltd (Numan Group) http://www.numan.co.uk -------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE END "Gary's Questions" is made possible by the kindness of Gary Numan and Derek Langsford whose job it is to give Gary some privacy while having a presence on the Digest. Frankly, certain people are getting up on their soapbox to gush forth sycophantic rubbish about their own individual beliefs. The key word here is 'individual'. Everyone has an opinion, and right or wrong, it is rightfully theirs. I am surprised at just how passionate some people feel they must be to prove the worth of their own doctrines. In all honesty, it is more than a little tiresome to sit back and wade through reams of what is nothing more than self indulgence, the authors intent on supplementing their high brow nonsense with unnecessary Biblical quotes and quasi-evangelical posturing. I was a little shocked to see Matthew Roberts take such an aggressive stance in this melee. I know him very well and have always found him to be extremely intelligent and more than capable of supporting his arguments with concrete evidence. I think he would have looked a lot more credible had he maintained that approach rather than offer his 'contempt' and refer to the 'stupidity' of others. However, that does not exonerate the opposition of blame. Matthew is that frustrating rock of society known as 'The Cynic'. He believes in nothing that cannot be proven. Many times we have argued at length over UFO's or ghosts or girls. It does not make him the stereotypical athiest however, if such a thing exists. His absolute disbelief versus the absolute Belief of a committed Christian. Who is right? The Christian will continue to believe despite the absolute lack of evidence to the contrary. The Cynic will not give the slightest inch or even pause to question 'What if..?' It's all down to opinion. No-one can ever win. Well, except maybe the Devil. He always seems pretty cool doesn't he? Personally, just to set the record straight, I think it is somewhat amusing that people put so much faith into something so incorporeal. As a someone who believes loosely in science alone, I find it hard to qualify the existence of any better place. I happily accept that there are those who do readily accept this theory, after all it has been the very basis of our civilisation for many centuries, but i would like to see them explain it, without the 'oh, it's no good trying to explain, i just believe' rubbish being brought into play. The Bible is a collection of fairy stories, many of which completely contradict each other and often paint a rather less attractive and more unforgiving picute of 'God' than the more acceptable face of commercial Christianity. It often promotes intolerance, racism, vindication and homophobia and it is riddled with debauchery (in the good bits anyway - i think there may be a few moralistic type bits somewhere towards the back) but your very belief is based on this book. It is a highly questionable tome on which to base your very existence but I am well aware that this is not the forum for this debate. I hope you can see this too. I think we have more than exhausted the subject. Why not move on to slagging something else off, that's what the Digest is for isn't it? Heavy dose of irony there, by the way. I didn't mean it. Honest. And for those who keep slating the drum machines, get it right. Gary doesn't even own one to my knowledge. When i spoke to him several times during the European tour, he indicated that the new album would be far more aggressive than the ethereal and melodic Exile. I believe he used the term 'in your face' - sounds cool to me. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 01:47:11 -0500 From: brezniakdavid@webtv.net (David Brezniak) Subject: AMEN...:-) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu First off, I've got my hand raised -- regarding 'whoever is sick of hearing the religious issues..raise their hand..' Not many have noticed, but Scotsman Billy McKenzie of Associates and collaborator with Switzerland's Yello took his own life via an overdose February of last year. He was 40. McKenzie fronted Associates through the '90s, but was best known in the early '80s and the album 'Sulk' won the Melody Maker album of the year I think in '81. McKenzie had a haunting voice and all in all was a good songwriter. He died after signing a multi-album contract with Sony. It seems that the death of his mother was a difficult thing for him and he led an even more troubled life in the year that followed it. I mention this as McKenzie is one of Numan's contemporaries and enjoyed success early as Numan was enjoying his first wave of success and credibility. Like my countryman Falco, these two tradgedies reinforce, to me, how wonderful it is Gary is still fresh, whole, very much alive and healthy, and enjoying a rejuvinated success. It's an entry I found in my encylopaedia. Numan, town and port on the Benue River, Adamawa state, eastern Nigeria. It is located about 30 miles (50 km) from Yola, opposite the mouth of the Gongola River, which is the principal tributary of the Benue River. Numan is connected by road to Gombe, Shellen, Yola, Jalingo, and Ganye. Probably founded by the Njei (Jenjo, Jenge) people, it was occupied in the early 19th century by members of the Bata people who were fleeing the advance of the Fulani jihad ("holy war"), and it became the centre of a small Bata kingdom in the 1850s. The town was selected in 1885 as a trading post by the National African (later Royal Niger) Company, which burned it in 1891 after an attack on a company ship by the Bachama peoples. Numan was gradually rebuilt, and the British established a garrison there in 1903. In 1912 the town became the headquarters of Numan division, a region that became the Numan federation in 1951. In 1921, Chief Hamma Mbi moved the Bachama traditional headquarters from Lamurde (20 miles west-northwest) and constructed his palace in the town. Modern Numan, a local government headquarters, is a collecting point for peanuts (groundnuts) and cotton and an important trade centre (sorghum, millet, cowpeas, fish, goats, sheep, and cattle). Outside the town along the Benue are the state government's sugarcane estate and sugar-processing plant (1971), one of the largest sugar-producing complexes in western Africa. The town is served by several secondary schools, a teacher-training college, a government craft centre, and a hospital. Pop. Of course, since there appears to be no Minneapolis Date, I will have to go to Chicago. Any one who can help me out with an idea of where the venue is, how much tickets are (if I can even get them), and the like, I would be appreciating it very much. Got out the old Sharpe/Numan Automatic tape tonight, and was sort of wondering, does anyone care about Numan's work with Sharpe? Does Numan ever drag any of those songs out on tour? It doesn't really come up much (I know, it's old news). Did anything by these boys chart? I assume that Change Your Mind did, as it was released here in the US. Did the album fare well? Why was it that New Thing From . . . was on Strange Charm, and all the other stuff seems to be on Sharpe records? I have sort of gotten the feeling that a lot of you out there don't like the Sharpe/Numan stuff(again, it don't come up too much), but in listening to it, it sort of has a feel to it. Certainly ranks with any other synth pop of its day. Just as a strange aside, I heard a song by 101 Strings (don't ask how) from around 1970 called, "Barrier X-69" that sort of has a Numan feel to it. Of course, all of the strings are real (no Synths), but it is peculiar, to say the least. Fear This Idiot! First, I am in three mailing lists. One here for Numan, one for Kansas and one for Rush. Right now, the Rush list (National Midnight Star) is going crazy over the Rush Secret Society - people sending 'cryptic' messages to the list that not everyone understands, and non-Rush related material. I admit, I gave into this crap and threatened to flame this material if I saw it again. My Kansas list has started to discuss the merits of Rush (how this started I do not know) and they are beginning to slag each other. And now, to my disappointment, this list has begun dividing into all of things, religious factions who will not recognize one another, etc. Let's drop this crap. If people send a post to the list about religion, let's just PGDN over it and ignore it. That is the only way it will go away. I know you are probably saying to yourself, why didn't he do that, well, I started to after the post about athiests do not exist. Exile is a work that addresses religious content. Whether this is Numan's actual belief or that of a character is unknown and actually irrlevant. Please do not believe that the purpose of Exile is to 'steer anyone to the DARK SIDE OF THE FORCE' or make them maim or even kill someone. Let us not forget the highly publicized court antics of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Suicide Solution' or Judas Priest's song that supposedly said "Just Do It" and was supposed to the be the backmasked message that FORCED some kid to kill someone. Honestly. This is ridiculous. The members of this list can take pride in the fact that we stay on topic, we do not regularly flame each other, and we swap useful information. It would be a real shame if we reduced ourselves to doing the opposite. Some people don't like Exile. Fine. Then stop posting your religious beliefs (you do not see mine here), stop judging people (Judge not lest ye be judged) and IGNORE THAT WITH WHICH YOU DO NOT AGREE. Prove you have the strength and intelligence to rise above these kinds of postings. -Kev ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 16:53:05 +0200 From: "Egon" Subject: Great concert in Utrecht To: "Gary Numan" I've seen a great performance on 26-3-98 in tivoli Utrecht. The band was also great. After the concert i stayed in the alley outside tivoli to see Gary. Steve H. was the first who came out. He said he saw me and my girlfriend standing in the front row. He was very friendly and he signed the frontplate from my guitar. Gary was so friendly to do the same. I have to buy a new guitar, i'm afraid to wipe out the autographs when i playing it. But it doesn't matter, i'm a happy man. greetings to you all. THE CONCERT Well, a bit less than 1,000 people showed up, amongst which 10 guests of mine and also the wonderful An Pierl=E9 (Piano version on Random of = AFE). The show was fantastic, and of the 3 shows I went to, definitely THE BEST. And the audience was great! I'm falling in love with the new "Friends" version, the light show was better than Paris and Utrecht, and we got the whole set including "We are glass". Still the older songs get more applause, but the new ones from Exile got a lot of response also. Brilliant atmosphere! And the new "Metal" can immediately be released as a new single or whatever. I hope he's going to issue a live album from this tour! Also, if Atlanta would be in the US tour, I might fly up and down to the states to have a look. Brad and Glenn, will you take care of me? 2. GARY NUMAN SAYS After the concert, we were able to meet Gary in the hotel. Some bits and rumors: - There will be no UK tour this year - After the US tour, he's going to do some festivals, Australia (Good news for Joey and David!!!), and then Europe again (November). How will I explain to my wife I have to go touring again just 8 months after now... - New album is scheduled for March 1999, but knowing Gary, it will probably be end of 1999, but with a real band line up! - Gary doesn't read this digest. His remark: "Too many opinions" - For the US tour, Atlanta and Texas (Good news for Donald!) are also confirmed plus some other ones. 3. THE PAPERS Today in a Flemish paper (2nd biggest paper in Belgium!): "Gary Numan is back" More than 15 years after, the hits Cars and Are friends electric? still sound unique and great. this is the most remarkable conclusion after the concert of Gary Numan, Friday in the Brussels Ancienne Belgique. Numan is back, with a powerful live act, and a lot of good songs though it is mainly the old ones that make impression. It's OK again to love Gary Numan. In his glory days early 80s, the Britain was loved and hated fanatically. The Numan haters got the right on their side, when his career went down the drain, and he released some records he's not particularly proud of. But now, bands like Foo Fighters and Nine inch Nails, and Smashing Pumpkins admit they like Numan. So, it's time for a comeback. With his rather good new CD Exile under the arm, the forty year old Britain came to Brussels were approximately 600 fans were waiting. A lot of plus 25ers and not so many youngsters, which means that the Smashing Pumpkins effect is not as big as might have been hoped for. "Unique" It was of course the old songs Cars and Are friends electric? that caught most of the success. And we have to admit that the songs still sound as big as before, and the weird synthesizersounds are always as unique as before. And it was amazing how new songs like Dark and Absolution stayed on the same level as the classics. Numan came on stage without a white painted face, without an expensive light show, but with a lot of synthesizers and a very good bunch of musicians. And the metallic sound in his voice still is a major asset. Numan is back, as said before, and it's not hard at all to admit that. Note, I literally translated this from the paper, from someone who was a 'neutral' guy in the audience!!! Hope you like this!!! There were some other comments in 2 papers, and I'll translate them as soon as I have them. Take care, Luc, Belgium ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 05:23:15 -0600 (CST) From: real-one@ix.netcom.com (John Marques Carramao) Subject: Pollsters From Planet X vs. Godzilla & Rodan To: Numan News/Foxxvox Members: The Green Dolphin's 5th (annual) International Critics and Musicians Poll rates the best albums, artists, guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, vocalists etc. of all time. The Green Dolphin's poll covers creative and progressive music: mainly all styles of rock, including ambient, canterbury, electronic, folk-rock, jazz-rock/fusion, post-rock, rock in opposition, space-rock. In the keyboards section they have listed 85 of best keyboard players of all time, yet there is no mention at all of Gary Numan or John Foxx, None. Kraftwerk wasn't on the list either, even Bowie didn't make any of their lists. To be absolutely certain that I was not missing something here, I asked if Gary Numan and John Foxx even qualified, I was told that they did indeed qualify in the 'Electronic Rock' genre. I have subsequently written to Green Dolphin and let them know exactly what I think of Green Dolphins. While Dolphins are one of the most intelligent creatures on Earth they cannot be trusted to conduct polls that can be taken seriously. If you too find it untenable that Gary Numan or John Foxx or even Kraftwerk for that matter can't even rate into the top 85 best all time keyboard player list, please let them know: GD's URL is: http://www.nra.lv/green/keybrd.htm GD's e-mail is: inde@nra.lv And don't forget to kindly ask them which planet/solar system their poll was conducted in. I got one of those funny moments where you know its going to feature Gary Numan. They then showed a clip of a contestant on THIS COMING SATURDAY's SHOW - it was GARY NUMAN!! I didn't catch his name. He came out of the door dressed in a Telekon outfit, glaring very madly (fantastic!!), and started to sing AFE with his own backing band. After the clip, Eammon jokingly asked that well used question "I wonder what Gary Numan is up to now". Matthew Kelly managed to reply "Well infact he's doing rather well for himself at the moment..." before EH cut in with "What ...somewhere like Japan?". They then both fell about hysterically at EH's wit and moved onto something else. So watch out for it on Saturday evening..... To: "Gary Numan" In the new edition of VOX there is a feature on obsessive fans - the majority of the feature, which stretches over 4 pages, is about the recent Numan convention in Milton Keynes. There's a large picture of three fans at the convention. Whilst I do not wish to be nasty, I think it would be fair to say that they are rather ummmmm errrrrrr, look I really don't want to be unkind, but....... rather an odd looking bunch. There I've said it. One is wearing that awful 1989 tour T-shirt - the one based on a German Iron Cross (the worst T-shirt design I can imagine for Gary, already labeled a fascist by many, to choose in 1989). Why wear that T-shirt? It's a horrid design. It's based on something which has horrid associations. Not to mention that after 9 years it must be rather worn. It's just horrid. Two of the fans have their arm outstretched in what can only be interpreted as a Nazis salute. I'm not suggesting for one minute that the fans are Nazis sympathizers. But can't fans be a little more sensitive and thoughtful as to how they fit in with Gary's renaissance? If they really had Gary's interests at heart, they would. I don't have an answer for avoiding this sort of publicity which clearly depicts Gary Numan fans as sad people with no friends. But if ever I saw a reason for a VOX reader NOT to buy Dominion Day, this must be it. Regards to all, Austin ps. If certain people really must send me e-mail directly after this, instead of posting to the digest, so be it. Just don't expect a response. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 17:48:35 EST From: WAR4PREZ Subject: Um...what can I have him sign?
