Danny here from Berkshire. Just caught our man on Sky One 6 o clock 'live'. I have to say he looked so cool, and not a day over 30. He did quite a good job defending Gemma and her love for him as a fan before they met. I think good old Jenny was a little stumped by his defensive attitude, TOP MOVE MATE !! Again, as with Big Breakfast, they gave him two models of aircraft and asked him to demonstrate (with sound effects) what his most dangerous manouvre was, to which he replied 'Look where that propeller is, right up me chuffer '!! Anyway, they played 10 seconds of Dominion Day and his first appearance on TOTP. He even got a graphical makeover to which the techy team put Keiths (from The Prodigy) hair on Gary, really crap idea I have to say !! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu My name is Jason Wallach and I have been a fan of Gary Numan since I was six years old when I first saw the video for "Cars" on HBO Video Jukebox. The song inspired and haunted me and still does to this very day. I myself am a musician and I record under the name The Unquiet Void and have appeared on 4 cd compilations thus far. I play keyboards and bass and I'm mighty spicy with a drum machine. I am currently obsessed with GN's "Exile" cd and think that it is one of the absolute best cd's I've ever heard. I love the dark and uncertain Jacob's Ladder "They're out there looking for me but I don't know where and when they'll come" feeling I get from listening to it. I think it is very profound and beautiful and very innovative. I listen to the cd at least 3 time a day and haven't skipped a day since I brought the cd home 6 weeks ago. I was even inspired to modify a screenplay I have been writing because of "Exile". I absolutely love the cd!! It is know that I adore Numan's work and here are some other artists that I like quite a bit: Stay Frightened, And Also The Trees, The Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox (4AD days), Wolfgang Press (4AD days), Kalte Farben, Skinny Puppy, The Legendary Pink Dots (early days - 1991), Lycia, Bleak, Jeff Buckley, Mozart, Beethoven, Goblin, The Birthday Party, Aphex Twin, Fields of the Nephilim, Tricky, Emperor, Elliot Goldenthal, David Bowie, Devo, Bel Canto, etc... Well this is all that I can really think of to add at this moment to say about myself. (snipped) Yes it is! > >How about an album of Numan's music performed by a full orchestra? (snipped) Firstly, apologies .... being something of a newbie to this e-mail lark, I inadvertently posted my reply direct to Pete, not the digest. Hopefully, this will get to the right place this time! So ..... great idea! Classical and rock/pop are not mutually exclusive musical forms, as proved by the success of "Classic Rock" albums .... bands relying on traditional orchestral instruments ..... the number of "classical" tunes taken by modern artists, given a more contemporary arrangement and maybe some lyrics, and turned into hits. After all, a song is just melody, rhythm, and maybe some lyrics, regardless of any label attached to it, when you strip it down to its bare bones. Although not musically trained at all, I'm sure there are a number of Numan compositions which would lend themselves to this treatment. The one which springs immediately to mind is "Photograph". Wouldn't it be ironic if this proposal actually came to fruition? I'm sure that the hordes of Numanoids out there would buy any resultant album, thus furthering the career of the musicians involved. Yet, almost twenty years ago (eek! - I can remember that far back), the Musicians' Union was dead against Gary's use of synthesisers, as they feared this would put "real" musicians out of a job! -- Cathi "If you're mindless please take mine" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Apr 1998 20:27:48 EDT From: Hopey77 Subject: Digest #422 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Could someone send me #422 that my Mac can read - thanks! The extended DD is just brilliant and when it ends and the new Metal start......its just awesome. I love the sound Gary is creating at the moment . It is bang up to date and for me, its like hearing Numan for the first time again. I was a bit hacked off when, as usual, the main HMV in Princess Street, Edinburgh didnt have the singles on display and someone had to go and get them from a dark cupboard somewhere. I agree also with the recent postings about poor publicity. At a time when Gary is producing such excellent material there doesn't apear to be even the smallest of adverts being placed. I would hope the US tour gives Gary some of the recognition he deserves. HMV do not think the single is being released till the 13th. However Virgin are stcking it. The thing is that Eagle is meant to a be a big money company, yet they have released 2 versioons of the single, but at full price - ie 4 pounds for each single. These days you have to give copies to major stores in order to chart, so that they retail at 1-99. No one but die hard Numan fans is gonna buy DD at 3-99 !! OK, so I bought them both, more fool me, but all in all, this is going to be another flop.I'm not really sure why Eagle expect this to be successful, if they dont play the major record label game that yu have to play in the UK these days... A real orchestra & high quality reference standard recording of classic tracks....... It would live in my CD player. I was the guitarist for Young Things Don't Scream (The original and best Numan tribute band) back in 87. We concentrated heavily on the early songs from Replicas, TPP, Telekon etc, both live and in the studio and I know that they would lend themselves brilliantly to a classical interpretation. Any takers???????? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Apr 1998 18:54:17 EDT From: MascaraRed Subject: Hello from Steve Ross/Big ol' list of Numan for sale... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello! My name is Steve Ross, and I'm...*sigh*...a gary numan fan.... I've been a fan since I first fell asleep to Telekon, and had some really weird-ass dreams. Gary's music has been an inspiration for me. The images his words and music evoke in my mind provided fodder for my early film and comic book projects. I don't play an instrument, but I do have an old synth I bought in the late 80s. I use it more as a prop; for when I dress in my Devo gear for Halloween. However, I can do a fairly close vocal imitation. As much as I love the early stuff, I have been completely turned off by the last few albums. As a Christian, I wish I didn't have to chose between God or what was once one of my favorite performers. Unfortunately, Gary's just a man, so he's going to be the one to lose, in my book. If Gary has such a big problem with God, I wish he'd bone up on his theology and present a REAL argument (ALA Bertrand Russell, or one of those godless German philosophers who think they're smarter than everyone ;->), instead of using "Bible-talk" to throw a theological equivalent of a temper tantrum ("I hate God, because I don't get what I want, and I don't like the way things are, blah blah blah, ad infinitum, for 10 songs). (Although, judging by Gary's lyrics, I think his real problem is with organized religion, and the way the Bible has been interpreted and misused by mere humans. I know lots of fellow Christians who would get behind Gary on that one.) I know I'm knotting up my own noose by saying these things, but hey, we're all fans here...we take the good with the bad. Besides, I like everything up to Machine + Soul, so that's a pretty impressive body of work. Anyways, since I've upgraded to CDs (and need some cash for my forthcoming movie project, about Jesus and the Apostles--JUST kidding!!)...Here's a list of stuff that I think would be better off in the hands of a more obsessive fan... That well known UK TV program which lets members of the public dress up and sing like their music hero's had a young guy do our very own Gary Numan. He was made up to look like Gary in his Telekon outfit and the make up artists did a very good job. The idea of the program is that the person who sounds most like their hero wins and goes on into the finals. Personally I thought the Numan impersonator was excellent, he sounded very much like Numan and tried to replicate all Gary's moves and stares exactly. The track chosen was 'Are Friends'.... Unfortunately he did not win, some other guy won who had impersonated a member of a former UK 'Boy Band'! I think he won this as most people in the audience remembered this track and the artist, whereas not everyone would have Numan quite so fresh in their minds! I must say though, for those on this Digest who also saw this show, did you get the impression that our Numan friend received the loudest cheer, both before and after his performance?
