I have finished the track listing and the artwork for the Cleopatra double Numan compilation, which will be called "Remodulation: The Numan Chronicles". I have submitted the track list, the photos and the liner notes to Gary/his manager (dad) for approval (they have been approved by Cleopatra already) and am working on getting the bonus tracks mastered. When I deliver the final package to the label I will post the track list, as it may change if things don't work out the way I want them to... I took into consideration the responses I got here, what the label wants, and what I felt best represented the Numa years. It was an EXTREMELY difficult (and I fear thankless) job. I hope the die hards (including me) who already have everything will be satisfied with the bonus tracks if nothing else. The Mix was supposed to be released this week in the US but has been delayed due to technical problems. (Don't ask). It will be out within a month. There is one track from that album on a compilation called Future Wave that is out now. It is the Leather Strip mix of Are Friends Electric and is absolutely wonderful, in my opinion. I haven't liked ANY of the other remix projects, and haven't heard any of the other tracks from the Mix album (I only did the artwork) but it is the BEST Numan track I have heard in ages!! Gary will be doing an in-store at Tower Records on Sunset in Los Angeles if everything works out. The label has also told me that he will be adding dates on the tour after the LA date (tickets for which are on sale in case you didn't know and are planning on coming)(and no, I can't get you free tickets, sorry). I have been given the go-ahead to start working on the US releases of the four live and five studio Numa cds. Dark Light and White Noise will be released first, then Sacrifice; after that I'm not sure. Dark Light will have a different cover from the UK version, but it is not a new picture (unfortunately). Cleopatra doesn't want to put them all out at once and flood the market. They are very aware of the Beggars reissues that will also be appearing in the next few months. They also know about the box set which will be out in a few weeks in the UK... There has been and will be a LOT more Numan cds on the market in 1998. We fans seem to be going from one extreme to the other... Bye for now, Rod Los Angeles ps: What happened with the four part digest the other day? At least I got the full version of the one before it (which didn't make it the first time). Isn't there someone who at least glances at the digest before it comes out? I'm not really complaining because I am grateful and honored that it happens at all. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 08:19:05 +0000 From: "Ian J. Harris" Subject: Dominion Day To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I just want to query the availability of the "Dominion Day" single. I saw a copy of part 1 on Wednesday in a small shop in London, priced =A33.99 and thought that as they had it in stock, it must be generally available in the megastores at =A31.99. HMV - nothing Tower - nothing Virgin - 1 copy of part 1, also at =A33.99. Is it on general release or what? Is part two to follow next week? next year? at all? Why is it =A33.99? Do Eagle think Gary has the same commercial clout as Oasis & The Spice Girls? (The only two acts I can think of in recent memory whose singles were not sold at discount price in their first week). Still despite shops not stocking it, no one knowing if it is officially out or not, and being on sale at full price where it is available, I am sure it will chart in the top 40, and thus give Gary a TOTP / Chart Show appearance (oh the irony!). I agree also with the recent postings about poor publicity. >At a time when Gary is producing such excellent material there doesn't >apear to be even the smallest of adverts being placed. Glad someone else found it difficult to find Dominion Day in Princes St. There were only two copies in Virgin when I went in at lunchtime, and that either smacks of phenomenal sales or poor distribution. I'll lay a substantial wager on the latter. There were none in HMV either, but I couldn't be arsed to make a fuss about it. On another matter, Steve Ross irritated me a wee bit in the last digest. After posting the entire contents of the previous digest, he compounded matters by claiming that religion was the reason for losing interest in Gary Numan (fact: Gaz has been bleating about God since about 1983. Is anybody really listening anymore?). He then made matters considerably worse by attempting to flog some videos which are 'genuine first generation copies'. I didn't realise there was such a thing as a 'genuine' first generation copy. They sound like illegal pirate videos to me. It would be reassuring if he could confirm that they are properly licensed copies. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 23:24:45 -0800 From: Derek Langsford Subject: Dominion Day part 2 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu While Dominion Day Part 1 has not made it yet to local stores I did find part 2 (they said part 1 had not come in yet). For those who haven't got it yet: Dominion Day Part two of two Dominion Day extended mix (from forthcoming Exile extended mixes album) Metal (20th Anniversary) Down in the Park (20th Anniversary) Dominion Day Live (from last year's UK Exile Tour) As mentioned last Digest, DD extended is a treat - has raised my impression of the song considerably. Gary has not just stretched this one with repeated phrases and instrumental breaks but has changed some of the instrumentation in places so as to make it interesting while maintaining the identity of the song. Bodes well for the Extended Mixes album. Can't wait to hear Deadheaven Extended. The 20th Anniversary version (both of which are stated has being written in 1978 although I thought Metal was 1979) are Gary's revisitation of these classic tracks but with his current style. I am not totally comfortable with the juxtaposition of the 1998 sound with elements of the 1979 originals. Still, an interesting couple of songs to have on the CD. DD live is surprisingly good and makes me even mroe excited about seeing Gary perform in SF and LA next month. Andy's comment about the UK prices on these CDs being too high to get casual purchasers highlights Eagle's dilemma. Dare they lose money by giving away singles hoping they'll recoup it later with increases single and album sales? For a start-up label, that must be very difficult to justify with an artist that already has a dubious reputation among many. Radio play is just as if not more important IMO. Radio play can make the people buy suingles they like but with the top 40 singles audience being mainly under 25 i.e. younger then the typical numanoid, Numan may be viewd as a has been rather than someone still producing good music. He'd have a better chance if the UK was mroe like the US where artists with long careers still seem to garner respect and sales. If anyone gets info on if DD charts - please post. Yes. Great album. With all the listening I've spent with my copy, I'd value it closer to "priceless." But excusing my geekiness, there are two varieties of the album, maybe more... one says "tubeway army featuring gary numan" and another just says "tubeway army" on the cover. I heard that it was originally released on blue vinyl, hence the nickname "the blue album" but I've never seen that one before. I'd pay 9 bucks easily for the simple "tubeway army" - if you're in a major city you can probably find a copy of the "featuring gary numan" one floating around for 4 or 5 USD though. Like I said, I've never seen the blue issue, only heard rumors... - Scott -------------------- Scott Gibbons nomusic@mw.idsonline.com ADAM &-THE ANTZ LILITH ORBITRONIK STRAWBERRY ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Apr 1998 21:42:45 -0500 From: Scott Gibbons Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #423 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) > How about an album of Numan's music performed by a full orchestra? The Balanescu Quartet recently released several Kraftwerk songs performed entirely on strings. So yup. It could be done... Kraftwerk, like Numan, are one of those bands who I'd always thought relied heavily on their weird sounds to create a lasting impression, but these string versions sound beautiful! Also - this weekend I'll be seeing the Chicago Symphonic Orchestra performing the Flying Luttenbachers' "Gods of Chaos" album (free jazz meets BlackMetal) * netcast from http://thelab.base.org for anyone who's interested. With a sorry lack of interesting modern music for traditional instruments (ok, ok, just my opinion) they've gotta look somewhere! I'm 30 = years old, live in London and I work for a company that produces = interactive software for auto manufacturers. I've been a fan of Gary since early 1983 - I was waiting for a bus home = from school and I had some time to kill, so I went into Woolworths for a = browse through the records. I came across a copy of 'Newman Numan' - a = compilation of earlier stuff, up to and including songs from 'I, = Assassin'. I wasn't really sure if I wanted it, but it was on sale and = there were a few songs I recognized, so I bought it. And that was it. Since then, I've bought everything, been to all all the tours (probably = about 30 shows in total) and always stuck up for Gary in even the most = difficult times. I've never met him, never spoken to him but still feel (ridiculously, = really) that he's a friend of mine. The closest I got was to grab his = hand during a show (when he goes to the front of the stage and touches = the crowds hands) in Colchester, about four years ago (people who went = will remember that this was the show where the fuse blew half way = through). These last two or three years have been fantastic. For Gary to come out = with music as strong as 'Sacrifice' and then 'Exile', after the depths = of despair with 'Machine and Soul' and all that Prince stuff is a = miracle. My other favourite artists? Nowadays its Sisters of Mercy, Yello and , = of course, Republica. While they were around and still did stuff I also = liked Thomas Dolby, Modern English and Talking Heads. I buy loads of = CDs, though, from just about any artist. One of my favourite CD's = recently is 'Album of the year' by Faith No More. My favourite Numan song is 'The seed of a lie'. Thanks to Derek and David for running The Digest. I was getting them as normal emails until about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Anyone else with the same problem? Seems to have coincided with 1 or 2 complaints from some getting garbled Digests over recent weeks. >From: "Jenny Beck" >what is this big breakfast interview.. was it in london?? on tv??? how >do i see it??? It was on a breakfast TV programme on channel 4 in the UK (based in London). Always good to hear from new members on the list...however - we've done to death the religious thing and we've been specifically asked NOT to post to the Digest about it, so please don't again. Secondly, if you've got a list of stuff to sell, don't clog up our mailboxes with it - posting a message inviting anyone interested to contact you for your list would be more polite. >From: sfulton@freenet.npiec.on.ca >I am looking to get a copy of the Book call Decade by Peter Gilbert & >Francis Drake. In response to Pete's suggestion of "classical Numan" - it'd certainly be interesting. I think you made reference to Gary's playing of the piano version of DITP - GN himself would be flattered you thought it was him, but he's said himself that it was actually Denis Haines who adapted and played it. >From: Jill Matthews >ALL ACROSS THE NATION we LISTEN TO THE SIRENS.... >If anyone wants to add to this feel free, we could keep it going into a >huge story with everyone's help!! Maybe its me, maybe I'm just getting old, but...ummm...well its not up to me obviously.....but....ummm.....well......!!! :-( On the subject of the single's availability - Went to Virgin in Oxford St, London. They had 1 copy of each version of the cd single - only under N in the rack, they had nothing on display anywhere else. Seeing as the CDs were packed so that you couldn't see which tracks were on each (and I didn't feel like buying both, at a ludicrous 3.99 each) I went without and thought I'd try the big HMV "flagship" store up the road. HMV...wait for it...didn't have it anywhere!!!! Not a single copy, or an acknowledgement of its existence!!! And neither place had the cassette version, either. Well done Eagle, great job! Gary's popping up here and there all over the media to promote the single, but no bugger can find it to buy it!! Questions answered, spleen vented, back in me box... North American Tour - the information continues to pour in. If you're thinking of attending any of these shows you really should stop by and visit the Tour Page, located at The World Wide Webb (click TOUR PAGE from main menu), at: http://www.interocitor.net/worldwidewebb/ This information is updated on a daily basis (well, except for a day earlier this week when my stupid web providers managed to mislay the entire site - which explains why some of you were getting "403 Forbidden" when you tried to access the site). Also updated regularly is the Digest Back Issues section. Many of you have been complaining that some issues are unreadable, particularly by users of Mac systems and/or people using Netscape's mail reader. This is caused by errant WINMAIL.DAT files being attached to outgoing email, often by newbie users who haven't a clue what they're doing. Seriously, they're using brain-damaged software and they don't even know it. In the case of issue #423, one reader clicked on REPLY, wrote his reply, and then hit SEND - apparently not noticing that he was quoting back the ENTIRE previous issue of the Digest, resulting in a 70+ kilobyte Digest. This sort of thing happens frequently, despite the best efforts of Dave and Derek. Human nature being what it is, it's going to continue to happen. You'll be happy to know that the Digests that appear on The World Wide Webb have been stripped of all this crap. My email client deals with (and throws away) those stupid WINMAIL.DAT attachments that cause many of your email clients to barf, and I manually remove things like quoting-back-the-previous-Digest. SO KEEP THIS IN MIND! If a Digest appears in your mailbox and it's unreadable, you'll likely find it on The World Wide Webb within 24 hours of publication. If you do not have access to a web browser, simply send me email and I'll forward you a CLEANED-UP copy of the Digest, no sweat. So keep these two addresses in your bookmarks: The World Wide Webb http://www.interocitor.net/worldwidewebb/ Joey Lindstrom joey@lindstrom.com We Gotcher Digest! ;-) Oh, and if anyone is curious as to which email client I use, it's called PMMAIL. Available for both Windows 95 and OS/2, it handles ANYTHING you care to throw at it. It's rock solid, stable as a table, handles multiple email accounts (for those of you like me who keep five or six of 'em around, just in case), has a built-in spell-checker and many other bells and whistles, and is relatively inexpensive (USD $40 - free 45 day trial). If yer interested, surf this: http://www.southsoft.com Or send me email and I'll file-attach you the distribution archive (about 2 megs I think). Lessee, what else... oh yeah. The World Wide Webb's Listening Booth is getting a good response, despite the fact that, so far, I've only had time to get six songs online. This is primarily due to several design issues that I've come across but most of that is now straightened out and I should be able to speed up the pace. The first online album is "The Premier Hits", and it will be followed (eventually) by the complete Beggar's Banquet back catalog. So, if you've got any web-friends who you're trying to convert into Numanoids, but don't wanna spend the money to send them some demo tapes, you can now point them at The World Wide Webb, or directly to: http://www.interocitor.net/worldwidewebb/my_breathing/ (Or follow the link from the Beggar's Banquet Mail Order Department page) Hmmm... that's it, I think.
