To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi folks- Listening to REPLICAS in high school in West Virginia, I never *dreamed* I'd actually see Gary live. Twenty years later, as Gary hits his stride better than ever, I will do so, both in Orlando AND Clearwater. I was prepared to go to Clearwater if it was added (two hours west of me): IMAGINE my surprise when Orlando was announced. And about 3 minutes from home no less! Would love to meet in advance with the UK couple and anyone else attending. E-mail me at alniter@ix.netcom.com (perhaps you know protocol on how to MEET the man!!!!!!!!) My 40th birthday is June 4th.....and to think Gary Numan will be giving me the present I've wanted for two decades, not once, but twice! And thanks to the people who keep this list and the websites going. If this happened and I found out after the fact I would be one unhappy puppy! I figure whoever drives the farthest to see a Numan concert has got to get some kind of brownie points (kind of like, my dad can beat up your dad, eh?). you Brits don't count 'cause you've had it easy all this time :) I am driving 500 miles to Chicago, but surely someone can top that! today I was in a store called Jumbo Sports, which sells, well, sporting goods. Of all the Celiny Dionish, Bostony, Helen Riddiyish music they could have played, I heard, of all things, the original Me! I Disconnect. When I heard the initial little synth query (it always sounded kind of questioning to me, don't ask), I realized then and there that I had to have been the only human being within a 30 mile radius who could have sung along. So I did. Then I went and bought my tickets for Chicago. Other than that, it was just Monday. Fear This Idiot! To: "'NUMAN Digest'" In order to be complete with the "What the papers say..." issue concerning the Brussels concert, I am very sorry to send you the following. These are translations (please don't look too much for the mistakes) of 3 negative articles (2 from French press, one from Flemish press). But please, cheer up, think of the very positive ones. You can't satisfy everybody!!!! LA DERNIER HEURE 30.03.1998 "Gary Numan not convincing" (2 out of 5) Benefiting from the 80s revival and the mediatized complements of a bunch of actual bands (Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, Foo Fighters) who name Gary as their main influence, Numan started with a European tour again. Last Friday, about 1,000 people coming to the Ancienne Belgique, didn't come to hear his new album "Exile", dated October 1997, but came to hear the old hits of the mythical New wave period. If the nostalgic charms of Cars, Are friends electric?, Down in the parc and other We are glass is OK for these kind of gatherings, Gary and his worthless band are painful to watch. Multiplicating the Rock Star poses and long gone clich=E9s, Gary shows = far to often to be running after his long time vanished past. He has a big difficulty to be taken serious, and resembles more to a pathetic clown than to a guy who is supposed to have refreshed the dance scene, like some people want us to believe. LE SOIR 31.03.1998 "Gary Numan runs after his past" The man of "Are 'friends' electric?" was in the Ancienne Belgique last Friday. This is the story. Every fortnight, an old glory whom we thought dead and buried comes back on stage to check his credibility, to an audience who is volunteering to come (blindfolded?) after all, if we count the 6,000 people watching the sinking of Genesis a few weeks ago. And just before the dinosaurs of Yes, it's the old new wave star Gary Numan who points his nose. Though he has a new album, we were in right to expect from the author of Cars, something better than the modest show we saw last Friday. If, like he always states, Gary loves Nine inch nails or Gravity Kills, he would have been better daring to play the "industrial" card instead of coming back to his older songs which, no doubt about it, are getting really old when listening to them. Nobody will blame Gary Numan to have been one of the first to open the way of the electronic music, but coming back 15 years later to propose the same thing, clearly shows his limitations or lack of ambition to the guy who is also an airplane pilot. In a bit more than one hour, Gary has certainly worked very hard to give the best of himself, surrounded by a tasteless band, reminding at the same time other bands like Human League and Depeche mode. Some people could laugh with it, others couldn't? DE MORGEN 30.03.1998 Gary Numan: Date of freshness - Expired Limited audience for British electronic legend Even with all the positive comments of actual artists like Beck, Smashing Pumpkins and Foo fighters, the former British electronic legend Gary Numan could only count on a few hundreds fans last Friday in the Ancienne Belgique. A new Numan is not something people are waiting for. Gary Numan is physically in perfect condition, but his neurotic and sterile sci-fi-synthesizerpop was for us as exciting as watching an aquarium for 90 minutes. Numan's career is rather erratic. Between '79 and '81 he was a teen idol with a couple of number 1 hits in the UK, and his work as pioneer on the electronic scene was a bridge between New Wave and Space rock, in the after punk period. His bombastic live shows (lights, robots, lasers?) were very inspiring for bands like Depeche Mode and OMD, who became mega-acts in a short time. Unfortunately for Numan, the general public did not appreciate his pioneerswork. He had to wait 15 years for a new acknowledgement, which came last year with the tribute CD Random, including An Pierl=E9's cover of Are 'friends' electric?. Enough reasons to start his first European tour in more than 10 years. The setlist was a good mixture of old classics (Question of faith(sic), Every day I die, Noise Noise) and tracks from his 97 Exile CD (Dark, An alien cure, Absolution). With this, Numan was either fish nor flesh. The New Dominion day got a hard industrial sound, with screeching guitars, whilst oldies like Cars and Down in the park (See the Foo Fighters on the X-files soundtrack of 95) got the heavy and not so fresh synthesizer sounds. The general monotonous icy voice of Numan remains, including the dark paranoid lyrics. Who hoped for an extravagant and theatrical stage show was also unhappy. Gary Numan only waved his arms and remained people shy. A few "thank you"s to the public after the closing song "Are friends electric?". The public couldn't be too chauvinistic either, because the obvious duet with the present An Pierl=E9 was also out of the question. The encores "Fragile" (sic) and "Me I disconnect" (sic) were played automatically, as also "We are glass" was played without emotion. Gary Numan only showed a past that in 1998 is totally irrelevant. A viewer stated "Gary Numan is the Roy Orbison of the electronics. He only doesn't know he's dead already". Counting the days to Cambridge- Hopey77 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 01:07:29 +0100 From: "Jason Smith" Subject: Eagle Eyes Action Man To: Gary Numan is producing his darkest and most current work for a long time. As his image, music and enthusiasm all come together in a powerfully rejuvenated package he seems poised to reclaim that should have been his for the past decade. SO has anybody else noticed the rather glaring mess Eagle have made of promoting Dominion Day in the UK? Extremely poor distribution, not a single press advert and two or three obscure TV appearances are hardly the hallmark of a major label capitalising on a cult artist enjoying his highest profile in years. Eagle have proved to be somewhat disappointing in every respect. Dominion Day was a real chance to get Gary Numan back in the charts and on mainstream TV and now the opportunity is wasted. It is incredible to believe that other than a brief mention on the telephone update very few members of the fan club were even aware of the single's release date. When considering that Eagle Records have Mike Peters of the Alarm, Thunder (dodgy ex-chart rock band) and Yes (the 70's prog rock boys!) as stablemates for Gary, it does not exactly advertise them as aiming for mainstream chart domination. Exile is the ONLY Eagle release thus far out of 20 to even chart in the top 100. However, all the above artists, our hero included, do have quite lucrative back catalogues and it would be a desperate shame if this were Eagle's true motivation. Numa Records - come back all is forgiven. ------------------------------ Date: 14 Apr 1998 13:49:45 +0000 From: Glenn.Bridges@asda.co.uk Subject: Exile - Oh Dear To: numan@cs.uwp.edu As with most digest readers , I hve been a little irritated at the ongoing religious debate. However , it finally made me go out and buy Exile. Oh deary , deary me. If this is supposed to be the record that brings back mega stardom , then I am no judge of music. (In fairness , I should point out that I am not a good judge of music. I liked Machine and Soul , and thought U Got the Look was pretty good :-) ). Whilst Sacrifice was 50% sheer genius and a welcome addition to my CD collection , it contained a lot of repetitive material which I assume to be the drum loops discussed here previously. In Exile , Gary seems to have picked up on all the elements of Sacrifice that turned me off , and emphasised them. There are some good points (Dominion Day ,Dead Heaven) , but no evidence of the breath of fresh air that was A Question of Faith. On the religion front , I am not going to discuss my own views , or those of any individual I know on the topic itself. The album , I feel , is a little over emphasised. This is no subtle ribbing , or a minor protest. Folk are either going to love or hate it. It blasts both barrels right in the face of something a lot of people hold very dear. It is a daring , risky strategy. Had this been Islam being criticised this way , there may well have been another Salman Rushdie fatwa on its way. (for those who do not know , in the mid 1980's Salman Rushdie released a book , Satanic Verses , which showed Islam in an unfavourable light. The Ayatollah condemned him to death (the fatwa) saying that whoever killed him in the name of Islam would be blessed forever. From that day to this , Mr Rushdie has secret armed guards , no fixed abode and lives in fear of a crazed islamic suicide bomber carrying out the sentence) Ironic note : most people had never even heard of the book until protest groups started burning it. It went on to become a mammoth bestseller. It may just have been purchased to be burnt , and rarely opened or read on its way to the flames. In fairness to Gary , he has done themed work before , Replicas being the most notable , where the theme is relentlessly adhered to throughout the album. This album (Exile) is all his own work , and derived from nothing other than his previous offerings. Far more than can be said for the normal formula driven pop trash we are usually provided with. Portions are well considered and quite thought provoking. But my biggest disappointment takes me back to the drums. I really miss the distinctive Numan Synth/Voice combination. If you could just tone down the rhythm section , Gary , and pump up your voice and music , I would be living in a paradise unimaginable by mortal man. As it is I just have another , not quite so treasured , addition to my Numan collection. Oh , and the promotion by Eagle is feeble. I know I've said that before. Believe me when I state that I will say it again. Who are Eagle? Are they a big label? To: Thanks David - Nice to hear from you I've been deeply inspired by Gary's style and persistence and particularily this new CD which harks back to the original captivating style that launched it all. I've been both a visual artist and played synths and various instruments since Gary's arrival in the world scene. We share a very similar approach in our manner of creating stimulating texture , mood , and powerful simplistic catchy beats with created and shaped sounds which are 'new' and unique-Tired of so much flavour of the month music I have the highest admiration for those in life who hold to their own expression in the face of opposing forces or "trend' changes. I had the great thrill of watching the 1979 tour in the old Danforth music hall in Toronto Canada - and old theatre with worn red velvet seats old brass fittings and a gothic like atmosphere. What an impact. I also caught the 1980 tour at Massey Hall in Toronto, again a resounding sucess. A friend snapped a short series of black and white pictures which ended up looking like old movie shots all of which have an almost angelic or alien like quality to them due to very unusual lighting effects. I play an old Prophet 1 monophonic synth from sequential circuits - A much newer KORG M1 digital music workstation - old Korg drum machine various sound pads and 12 string guitar. Fed up with the shifts in music back to the grungy guitar generation X angry whatever music - I leaned to my art talents in making a living and now pursue both on a much more pleasureable level as I specialized in Oriental carpets and now manage a large Oriental rug Gallery in Ottawa, Canada as part of one Canadas oldest importers and wholesalers of rugs since 1929. I've yearned for some video of those concerts of Numans because it really seemed otherworldly and brilliant at the time(and still is) for almost 20 years. Talk about thrilled when I linked up with Jim Napier AKA 'Machman' who runs the North American fan club.He was like hitting the gold mine. His club video catologue is by far the most outstanding that I can see around the world - I swear he's collected virtually every snippet of footage done. I should finally recieve a wack of footage any day. I hope to meet up with Jim in Toronto at Lees Palace on the current tour. Now that I'm older, my friend at the time that we saw the original tours with,is very involved in the current new music scene - booking bands and managing a great bar of his own; so his friends at Lees palace may help create a unique experience if all goes well.IE: would love to shake the hand of the the man at a sound check - give him a sincere Canadian congratulations on it all! To: "Digest Numan" Dear Numanites, For those of you interested in this type of random cosmic event - and I know there are one or two out there: The place: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Baku, capital of Azerbaijan (for you Americans it's on the west coast of the Caspian Sea, check your Atlases) The date: Tue. 13 April '98 The time: 08:30 - just after my shower. MTV Asia screened "Change Your mind" by Sharpe & Numan on some synth pop show they run. First time I've seen the video. hmmm, why does Numan use such crap directors? And I'm not sure that the Berserker makeup goes with white shirt and trousers. What was he thinking? Oh well we all have our off days ... Now, where's my breakfast? TikTokMan, Baku ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 08:24:09 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Orchestra To: Gary Numan My contribution to the Dominion Day saga: Virgin Marble Arch (in London) told me they had 8 copies of the CD (4 of each version) on Monday 6th. Tower Records Kensington High St had 6 copies (all sold by Saturday). If Tower Piccadilly Circus had any copies, they were also gone by Saturday. HMV Trocadero didn't have any and the "expert" there told me that the single definitely hadn't been released yet, and if Virgin were selling it= , they shouldn't be! Er, yeah right! I mean you couldn't possibly be wrong could you? Now let me see. 4 of the biggest record stores in London. Maybe between 1= 4 and 30 copies of Dominion Day in it's first week of release. A chart hit?= I don't think so. All in all, I've come to the sad conclusion that Eagle Records are either= useless or have no ambition and just want to cash in on Gary's existing f= an base. Please Eagle, prove me wrong. On a happier note, Marilyn Manson once again name checks Gary Numan as on= e of his heroes in this week's Time Out. Also, Tower Records' free magazine states in their news section: "This month's chalk and cheese mix goes to Gary Numan recording with Afrika Bambaata". Is there anything in this or, as seems more likely, are they just getting confused by old stories? There is only one other thing: Please contact your local music stores (daily :-)) and request for the brandnew CD as long as they will stock it in !!! Markus from Nuremberg/Germany ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 20:30:59 -0700 From: "Joey Lindstrom" Subject: REVIEW: "Gary Numan: The Mix" To: "numan@cs.uwp.edu" Y'all may recall the 1996 abortion known as "Techno Army Featuring Gary Numan". A complete waste of paper, metal, and plastic - I use my copy as a drink coaster. But it lives on!!!! Yes, boys'n'girls, the original tapes of Gary re-singing the vocals for a variety of his past songs have resurfaced, this time at Cleopatra Records. Unlike their predecessors at Castle Communications, the good people of Cleopatra managed to get it right. In fact, bang on target. I'll start by saying, again, that I'm not much of a fan of techno or industrial or whatever it is you wanna call this music - nor am I much into labelling my music by category but that's a horse of a different colour. That said, I know what I like - and I like this album. A whole lot. There are, to be honest, a few tracks that I tend to skip over. "A Question Of Faith (Anubian Lights Mix)" does little for me, nor does "We Are So Fragile (LCD Mix)" - this latter track dispenses with most of Gary's vocals, in fact the guy who announced each dub on the tape gets more airplay here than Gary does. And "Deadliner (Spaceship Eyes Mix)" is truly, truly terrible - they just don't "get" what this song is about, apparently. But the rest of this album is hands-down brilliant. Cleopatra's approach was to do "Techno Army" the right way: by assigning one track to each of 14 bands in their stable, bands that know how to do it right. Moreover, in most cases, they not only managed to "do techno" but also managed to "do Gary" - ie: unlike Random 2, these tracks are recognizably NUMAN even when they mess about WILDLY with the music. Although much of the music, like Numan's own, is dark, it sure sounds like the bands had a lot of fun with this project. It's a very enjoyable listen and it's hard to avoid gettin' up and havin' a bit of a dance. Which, for me, is sayin' something - I do *NOT* dance. :-) This CD is not going to be played in my CD player as often as, say, "Exile". But it's gonna get more than its fair share of spins 'round the laser beam. It's enjoyable, and more to the point: it's credible. It deserves a place in the collection of all but the most casual Numan fan. (NOTE: this is a North-America-only release. Fans in the UK and other countries will need to import it. I highly recommend www.cdnow.com for online purchasing.) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well fellow Numan fans, Looks like the Eagle has landed, or should I say CRASH Landed. If it were not for the efforts of fellow listers like Joey Lindstrom, and the keepers of the list themselves, a great deal of this years information would NOT be available. Here in my area, there has been NO mention of Numan at all. No airplay, no concert ads, no print ads, on and and on. This Eagle deal is worthless, even if Numan can not say so himself. Thanks to the internet, and devoted fans over the years, Numan can still produce music, and enjoy that aspect of his life, as there is no records companies doing there part. THANKS!!!! To everyone that is so involved. I have to say that I am indeed impressed. I enjoyed every mix on the album except for 1 or 2 that got a little too wild for me. I haven't seen anyone else make any comments yet on it so I thought I'd post my .02 I recommend it highly, especially to those who were let down by Random 2. Though not the same principle, it was a big relief to me. Matthew Oldland IUPUI ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1998 03:26:52 EDT From: Friday 3rd Subject: What is... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu ....the best way to get a message (i.e.) e-mail to Gary? I mean, something a bit more personal and not just questions that may or may not be posted somewhere. There doesn't seem to be any encouragement for "general correspondance" on his site. Any such thing as "personal correspondance"? Not I really expect an answer, I would just liketo improve the chances of him seeing my message. (I have heard that all e-mail at the official site goes through his father first. Not overly comfortable with that. ;-) Any help/feedback on this greatly appreciated! Thank you, Kat ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
