EXILE found at Sam Goody! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello Numanoids; In order to get pumped for the May 2nd show in NY (like I really need to be anyway!), I sat down with my wife to watch The Touring Principle video last week. My two and a half year old daughter recognized the first song ("Cars"), and was glued to the set for the next 50 minutes! She has since watched the video about 10 times in 2 days!! Hey....anyone out there with kids knows that if it keeps 'em quiet, you let 'em watch it! It beats the heck out of "Barney"!!!!! I also finally found EXILE on CD, in, of all places, a SAM GOODY store! The US release has a 10th track (a live version of Down in the Park, done to perfection). I find it to be a little too slow at times for my taste, but I believe it is his best music since the 78-81 "machine" era stuff. My favorite song is THE ANGEL WARS, but I wish the lyrics were not so anti-Christian. I have a hard time listening to the second verse inparticular. I have read all the religious comments on Exile in this newsletter, and as a Christian, some of the lyrics are really hard to listen to. But, if the record truly is a concept album about heaven and hell being the same place (I still have not see this explained clearly enough in the lyrics though), I guess the words capture that feeling. I just hope Gary's next record won't be as depressing lyrically. All in all--the music is interesting, and its good to see Gary back on the guitar again. It's no wonder Cleopatra is distributing this CD.....though still undeniably a Numan recording, it is more "gothic" sounding than any goth band out there! NickYak@aol.com PS--Does anyone out there know what became of Numan's 79-80 drummer Cedric Sharpley? I know he was on the 85 Fury tour, and he is one of my favorite drummers. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and see you May 2nd! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 10:34:06 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: a load of stuff. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well, during the Easter holidays I got a load a whole load of new Numan stuff to listen to. The album I got at 2nd hand fair, Metal Rhythm is a good album, very consistent , no "filler" songs, but nothing really outstanding either. Favourites are Hunger, this is emotion , and America. Also got Ghost from a 2nd hand shop. Great live album, but really dodgy cover. What IS Gary doing? Nowhere in darlington, my home town, did notr have Dominion Day anywhere, so I thought HMV in Newcastle would have it , Went yesterday, looked in singles section, and found several copies of Cars (from 96) but no DD. Unbelievable! Ordered it from record company, Expecting to get it about Christmas! I also have a couple of queries about live albums. The date on Ghost is 1992, but the tour was from 1987. How did it take 5 years to come out? And looking at "The World Wide Webb" it says Gary's tour in 1989 was called the Skin Mechanic yet I thought the album was taken from the Metal Rhythm tour. Please help me sort out my confusion! John Foxx stayed in his dressing room until it was time for the bus to leave but we got to speak to him for about 5 minutes,What a very humble and gentle man he is,almost embarrassed at having people thank him for a great night. OH!!!! One last thing,My friend couldn't get to the gig because she is pregnant and should have had the baby the day before the gig but still hadn't gone,so to cheer her up we asked Ade to call her on our mobile and cheer her up,he said "No problem"...really made her day I can tell you. Monday 11.35 am, HMV - Argyle Street, Glasgow Me: Can I have the two Numan releases please! Staff: Not released Sir, put back until 13/4/98. Me: Can you check, I think your wrong. Staff: This is my job and I know they have been put back as we have had loads of Numan fans in and told them the same. So off I went two doors along to Virgin. Me: Have you got the Numan singles in. Sales: Yes these are the last two (11.40am). Me: Did you get four copies then :-) Sales: No we did get quite a few but they have all gone quickly apart from these two, you were lucky to get them. Me:Thanks, HMV said they weren't out until 13th. Sales: Yeah we have had quite a few people in saying the same, that's HMV for you. So off I went happy with my two CD's back next door to HMV. Me: Hi "Mr I know my job salesman". Look what I got in Virgin. Released on the 13th eh. Fuckwit! Him: Well that's what I was told. Me: Ever tried working in something less taxing on the brain mate, a job that doesn't involve customer service might be a good start. Him: pulled a face and did not rise to the bait. To be perfectly honest, apart from the fact he was an arsehole the blame still lies with the distribution process and to plough a substantial amount of money into an artist like Gary and the release of Dominion and then do sod all in relation to checking that all the companies like HMV, Tower etc. had the correct release date is at best a disgrace. Someone even said they would have been better off if he was still on his Numa label but one thing worth noting that if it wasn't for Eagle there would not have been the European, U.S., Australian and Japanese tours. Also there would not have been the local releases in the U.S. and Australia of Exile. Here in Australia he is experiencing his best exposure since the early 80's with the largest alternative station in the country giving him plenty of good airplay. With the new single to be released next month here and the forthcoming tour he has a good chance of even making the charts here and this is all because of Eagle. I for one am greatful that the Eagle has landed. I have to say that I'm more than a little surprised that Gary's own label, Numa, acheived the same (or better) distribution. On a related note, I found EXILE (the U.S./Cleopatra version) in two local chain stores in Youngstown, OH. The local Best Buy has had it available for the last month and a half. The local Circuit City also had it, but, for some reason, the label that the store uses to inventory their selections had the artist's name as "Gory Knuman" or something like that. I found the CD after a bit of searching for something else. I hope that mistake isn't chain-wide, or no one will find EXILE in Circuit City stores unless they too can't spell. In regards to the upcoming U.S. tour, I have my tickets for the Cleveland show. I hope to meet some of you at the pre-show gathering. (Fingers crossed for meeting Gary after the show.) Derek, LA aftershow or not I assume you'll be sociable in SF - we WILL meet at the Peace Pagoda in Peace Plaza. No Pizza Hell. :-) I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, even Alec Way who dissed on a very excellent act, The Smashing Pumpkins, in the last Digest. It's just a question of taste. :-) Got Dark Light the other day (thank you D. Vogel!)... it rocks, as we all know! Skip the rest of this if you don't care about evangelization or another Mix review, including art criticism. To Tony Clark: About teenagers' musical tastes. Not to toot my own horn, okay admittedly to do so, I have a little Amway thing going on locally and have directly or indirectly gotten at least six teenagers to date (as well as older individuals) into Numan's music, including my ex-boyfriend, a very dedicated convert who was so kind as to buy me The Mix yesterday. And then there are my poor younger sisters who have had to deal with my broadcasts of Nu-music to the point where they hum or even dance along. There was another girl my age at Numan Theme Night awhile back, too (and we have a mutual teenage friend who likes Numan); and I know (of) a few other teenage fans all across the nation. We may not rock the charts, but we make our preferences known to those poor teeny-boppers who listen to Top 40 crap and get pissed off when tour dates exclude us. :-( To digress, I wouldn't want to know that the money I was getting came from attendees getting drunk. Doesn't quite help to spread the love to younger audiences to play at an age-restricted club now does it? Coming back to The Mix, after one listen I quite like it. I agree that "QoF" was just a mess and dull at that but I think the "Deadliner" cover has one merit... it sounds really disoriented and disjointed. Well, that can be either a merit or a liability; I don't think I'll be reaching for repeat on that one. I don't think we needed three "Cars" and two each of "AFE," "We Are Glass," and "We Are So Fragile"; but it was interesting to compare the versions. At least Information Society's "AFE" wasn't eligible as a remix. :-) Good "IDYD" though. I also liked Kill Switch... Klick's bold choice of "Emotion"... whereas other artists tackled classics, KSK took a song from a rather dark age of Nu-music and turned it good, I thought. Interesting treatment by Biokraft of "She's Got Claws" as well... now who'd have thought an experimental jazzy sort of track would work as a gothic/industrial remix? I hope I hear cuts from this album during the DJ dancing at the May show. And I'll broach the subject here: Rod from The Art Dept., I don't particularly care for your work on this. No offense but I'd like to offer a bit of constructive criticism (NOT flaming). I forget if you mentioned your usage only of live Teletour-era photos (save for the large cover one), but I think you could have stood to diversify just a tad, maybe use something that's not 17 years old... your average, Numan-ignorant goth who picks this up will think that's what he looks like now! Generally I think it all looks like a composite of Switchblade Symphony, NIN, and Living Ornaments liner art. Just my $0.02, by my own aesthetic. :-) The CD itself is quite pink, innit? How gothic. ;-) Okay, enough angering people and adding several rambling kilobytes to the Digest for one day. I got my tickets to the Atlanta Show yesterday. I think the last time Gary played here was as part of Tubeway Army, at a club called 688. They have long since closed, and the Masquarade is the place. The other amazing thing, is that I have only heard one reference to Gary coming to town, and that was not even a mention of where or when. It was during the "Resurrection Sunday" radio show. You can listen to it via-real audio at http://www.com/99x . They were one of the first stations to go on the net at all times. The show is on Sunday's at 12 noon til 4pm EST. It has come to my attention that Gary Numan is playing New York. If you are going I suggest you adopt the Andy McHaffie approach. Step 1. Appropriate clothing. Appropriate clothing, according to the Andy school of cool, is to never, ever wear a Gazza Numan t-shirt to his own gigs, not even a Tubeway Army t-shirt. Appropriate t-shirts might be those that refer to Gary, but only in passing, like say aviation related t-shirts (his hobby), or a t-shirt of one of his support bands that no one else liked.. Step 2. Appropriate beverages. Alcoholic cider. And lots of it. Step 3. Listen and repeat. NOOOOOOMAAAAAANNNN. Step 4. Do not dance or move to "Cars". Stand grumpily by and make disparaging remarks about poseurs. However, when "Are friends electric?" is played, wave your hands during the chorus like you are an extra in "Triumph of the Will." Bemoan that Numan has resorted to having celebrity stunt doubles like That Girl from Republica sing back up live, to update the feel of the now aging performance technique. Step 5. Every now and again, remark to friends about how understated the show is this time around, almost minimal, only 6 million lasers and a half tonne of dry ice. Step 6. Be sure to correct those around you, "It's a WEAVE not a WIG!!!!" Step 7. Let it be known to all the lookey-likeys that despite the fact that they may LOOK like HIM, you SOUND like him when you sing in the shower. Step 8. Offer at every opportunity to other fanclub members that your band, who have not agreed, will frequently play their Gary Numan benefit gigs. (Weaves are EXPENSIVE!) Step 9. Talk to everyone and confess to being a long-time fan as if embarrassed, while secretly knowing it's THE coolest, nerdiest thing one could do. : ) Having seen Gary Numan now three times (oh dear), I would have to say that it's not half bad. Almost, compellingly half bad... OK, Gary and Japan hung out together for a while in 1980, backstage at YMO in London etc etc, Gary invited Mick & Rob to play on his next album (Dance). He also wanted to do a song with Sylvian but it didn't happen. Japan gave Gary a vague invite for a get-together while they were both in Japan early on the next year. Months went by... Japanese tour happens. Gary turns up at Japan's hotel before a gig, assuming that he would still be onstage. He thinks it's strange when they go to the gig without him (he took this personally, at the time they were escaping from Japanese fans by creeping out the back door of the hotel or something) At the venue Gary watches the soundcheck and then the gig from the side of the stage but isn't invited on as he was expecting. Japan didn't invite him onstage because they hadn't rehearsed anything togetther. But Gary had taken it personally and there was a *minor* falkling out, although Gary, Mick and Rob later made it up (not that they had really fallen out). At the time, Sylvian was a little distant from everyone apparently, so Gary shouldn't have taken that the wrong way! Anyway, there was another falling out between Mick & Gary later on when Mick gave an average/poor review of "Dance" in a Uk pop magazine when it came out. After some angry responses from Gary's fans Mick had a letter published explaining his reasons for writing the negative review. Mick never worked with Gary again, but there isn't a hatred. After he left Japan, Rob Dean was a member of Gary Numan's band (through the I Assasin/Warriors period). That's it. You can read Gary's side in his book "Praying For The Aliens", which is very entertaining (and a bit different from the version above) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 15:17:41 -0700 (PDT) From: david c carroll Subject: Numan quote on Rocktropolis.com To: Gary Numan Mailing List I saw this bit of info on www.rocktropolis.com: When asked during a Rocktropolis chat Tuesday (March 31) night if he would ever want to work with David Bowie or Brian Eno, Gary Numan replied, "Probably not with Eno because he seems a little too pompous for me. I don't fancy working with Eno at all. He's a little too arty. Makes some nice sounds, though... David Bowie probably not. I still haven't forgiven him for something he did in 1980. It's a long story. I'm not really into what Bowie's doing at the moment anyway, I'll wait till he gets more interesting. Not that he's offering, of course." Two things: 1) What was the thing Bowie did in 1980 that Numan has never forgiven him for? 2) When Eno came to Seattle in October 1990 on a speaking tour (sort of in support of his & Cale's "Wrong Way Up", but not really), I saw him after the event and asked him if he ever had considered collaborating with Gary Numan. "Gary WHO?" was his response. -- dave ''' C-OO "big science. hallelujah" david c carroll \ Seattle, Washington, USA - tvc15@speakeasy.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 01:13:33 -0400 From: Randall Wolf Subject: Numan Tickets - NY To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I have two tickets for sale for the NY - Irving plaza gig, now that W. Palm Beach (my hometown) has been added I have had a change of plans, both for $20 + priority mail charges. By the way, Is it a fact that Gary hunts down the nearest Mcdonalds when in town and eats there before the concert? True story... I live in Philadelphia with my non-fan husband (Derek, Robert, and all you other married Numanoids don't know how good you have it!). My husband's cousin in San Francisco decides to get married on May 2nd. Great, we tell her we'll be there..fly out on May 1st and just stay for the weekend. A bit excessive I know, a long way to go for a few days. Then the 1st 6 Numan U.S. Tour dates are announced. I send my husband an email at work with the tour dates and a note saying "Darling, I think I have a problem..." Thinking to myself all day long "He won't understand! And even if he does, his family in California won't understand! How am I going to do this?" Our conversation that night sounded something like this... me: Did you get my email? husband: Yeah. pause. me: I have to go to this concert. How can I explain this so you will understand? husband (breaking in): You don't need to explain. This is something you have been talking about since I met you. (we've been together 13 years) me: Wow, you DO understand, but how can we get out of the California wedding? They won't understand. Maybe we can make something up? We have to work? An important "thing" came up and we can't make the wedding. husband: I can't lie to my family. And we told my cousin we would go. me: Then I'll lie to them! Maybe we could just not tell them, or just blame me, "Jorja has a previous commitment that she can't get out of" - that wouldn't be lying... Anyway to make a long story short...The Compromise: We both go to the concert on May 1st and fly to California VERY early on the 2nd to arrive just in time for the big wedding, plus stay an extra day. Everyone is happy. End of story. Update on the Philadelphia venue - The first U.S. show! I stopped by the TLA today to check things out (haven't seen a show there in a few years). It seems they have removed ALL of the seating, so it is "standing room" only. As of today (4/21) they had 300 tickets sold. Thanks, Lisa Hi All, I'm back from my vacation to the Pacific Northwest...I've had 2 weeks of journals to catch up with...so here it goes: I brought back a copy of "Praying To The Aliens" which I find hard to put down. I'll give you a review when i finish. Reply to Scott from #424 - Yes, the blue vinyl Tubeway Army does in fact exist! I have a copy, and i know of at least one more in existence (owned by the friend who found me mine) Here's my rant for the week - On the subject of lack of media attention to Gary: I agree wholeheartedly...but I'm not sure what to do... I even tried to do something about it once, way back in the IRS days...the apathy of the record company compounded by the apathy of my editor was too much for me to bear, and the last straw where my career in the music industry was concerned. It seemed to me that I gave a shit about the artists and their music, but the industry is only interested in the "cool thing du jour" and their ability to make money. Ok, 'nuf said. I'm sorry about Eagle Records and their seeming inability to place Gary's CD in stock. And while I am on this track, WHERE THE HELL IS CLEOPATRA IN ALL THIS? This lack of promotion and distribution is something that I take personally. I used to do radio, retail, and print promotion, marketing, and tour support, etc. I did it on a shoe-string budget for a very small independent, so I know it can be done - I have the enormous clippings file to attest to my success. Open Message to Cleopatra Records If you don't have the time or resources to properly promote Gary's US concerts...look under your nose. There are plenty of us Numan fans who know the record stores and radio stations in their area. Ask for help! Seems to me if you got just one of us in each city to visit their local cool record store to rant and rave about Gary, try to get them to put up a window display, stock his records, etc. This would have a big effect...especially that he now has a tour that needs support! That's all for now.... Faith Manages, Lisa obscure@blueneptune.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 11:41:29 +0400 From: "Peter Enright" Subject: Say No To Numan Overkill! To: "Digest Numan" Friends, Romans, Numanoids, I just woke up from an awful nightmare. Maybe it was my subconscious freewheeling after reading all the horror stories of Eagle's appalling marketing. Cue Twilight Zone Theme (the original): I sit bolt upright in my black satin Numan bedsheets, and flick off my Numan alarm clock that plays "Everyday I Die". In my stylish Numan Jim Jams I stumble bleary eyed into the bathroom, grab my Numan toothbrush (recommended by 5 out of 10 dentists) and brush my teeth with Numadent, shower behind my Numan shower curtain with scented NumaSuds soap. I won't bother describing my employment of bio-degradable Numan toilet paper, or my NumaFresh, after all We Are So Fragile. I slip into my Numan briefs, available in all sizes and colours. Breakfast is of course NumaNescafe in my favourite Gazza mug, NumaFruit yoghurt and NumaBran Flakes. Oh look - a free plastic Numan Action Figure hiding in the bottom of the packet. I add it to my impressive collection. I take a walk in my NumaNikes, passing many Numan products billboards. Strange, no Numan Ale at the Numan & Ferkin. I jauntily step into the local music shop and come Face To Face with - horror of horrors - a huge glow-in-the-dark poster of Gary frowning menacingly next to a Spice Girls lingerie display ... at that point I woke up, my pillow soaked in sweat. Maybe it's not such a bad thing if Numan is kept low key, not invisible mind you, just low key, for the discerning buyer ... Now we resume regular programming ... Finally he has received the airplay he so justifiably deserves. Where? My local VG convenience store, that's where!! Well actually it wasn't quite him. What I actually heard being played over the superb shop sound system was Amanda Ghost's version of Absolution from Random. A little surprised I asked the guy behind the counter which radio station he had on, but it turned out it was the latest Ministy of Sound compilation done by Boy George and Pete Tong. So I guess Boy George being at the Random launch wasn't so bad after all...although I wonder how many people will read the inlay card and find out that Gary actually wrote the track...not many I'd guess!
