Peden" Subject: Australian Shows To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all, I don't suppose that anyone out there has any vague idea of where Numan will be playing if and when he makes it to Australia. (I am in Perth and my experience is that even the most well financed bands often simply cannot be bothered to fly over from the Eastern states to play Perth - eg. Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails etc. Nice place though it is, probably contains too many boot scooters though). On the subject of biggest fans, I would have rated my girlfriend, Jean, up there (at least from the good old days of the eighties). Before she emigrated from the UK she rarely missed a show when on tour, and often lost jobs due to her preference for following Gary around to working. Since then she has flown back to the UK twice in order to follow Gary on tour. Difficult to compare with driving around the US after him, but her dedication is quite staggering. -}-Ben-J-Peden- @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Ph: (08) 9381 6680 email: benjp@pd.uwa.edu.au write: 17 Kingston Street, Nedlands, 6009, WA. Let me introduce myself: My name is Florian Meyer and I live in Hamburg, Germany. I'm 27yrs old and I'm working as a computer engineer. I fell in love with Gary's music when I was 11 yrs. old but have started collecting his works not before 1990. It started with a Best-Of 2 lp-set and went then over to trying to get hands on his cds which can be very hard and difficult sometimes. I only bought them when I saw them at local record stores, but am getting now into trying to get as much as possible. (just ordered the Dominion Day 2-CD-Set and the Absolution EP at a London record store: Sister Ray). Although I'm quite satisfied with my collection up to this date, it always can be more, don't you agree? What else do I listen to? I like very much: Anne Clark, Howard Jones, The Stranglers, ZZTop, A Spell Inside, Apoptygma Berzerk, DE/VISION, Cyndi Lauper, The Art Of Noise, The Corrs, Lacrimosa, Fading Colours, Rosenstolz, Alphaville, The Cain Principle, Wolfsheim, Dead Can Dance but generally nearly everything except brainless top40-crap. I play Guitar and Keyboard and have written some songs myself, yet not published. Unfortunately I have never played in a band, but would love to. The interview was by Johnny Walker (Black) and covered: religion, technology, the gothic movement, and the internet. The most interesting thing was the following quote from Gary...."I got a letter from Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins) a few days ago saying some cool things, wanting to work together". This is significant. Two points I want to make: 1. From an artistic point of view, a colloboration with Billy Corgan is certainly the most interesting of all the collaboration proposals I've heard so far. I mean, do we really want Gary to team up with Wayne Hussey or Gravity Kills? Yuk. 2. If such a collaboration went ahead, it would send Gary's credability soaring amongst the music press, media, and radio. I feel it would be enough to finally blow away the "Gary is crap" myth still held by many. However a collaboration with Wayne Hussey would just be ridiculed as two old-timers from the 80s. A collaboration with Billy Corgan would get genuine respect. No doubt about it. A Wayne Hussey verses Billy Corgan credability exercise is futile. It is a FACT that the Smashing Pumpkins frontman is cooler in the eyes of the press than the ex-Mission frontman. (I mean, some of you would like to see Gary do a duet with Thomas Dolby and Howard Jones). Gary still needs all the cool and back-up he can get. For once in his life, Gary needs to use the fickleness of the UK's music press to his advantage. Its a shame Billy Corgan wasn't able to contribute to Random. (BTW, weren't Beggars meant to releasing a Random 3 in the Spring with some additional tracks by bands who couldn't contribute first time round??) I am certainly going to start to lobby Gary about this. After all, Gary isn't the best judge is he? Dollar, Bill Sharpe, Da Da Dongggg. Oh God and lets not forget Leo Sayer!! And now perhaps Billy Corgan. This is certainly a good time to be a Numan fan. BTW, The Smashing Pumpkins are doing a gig at Shepherds Bush at the end of May. Shame that Gary will be over in the states - could of been a good time for them to try it out! Regards to all, Austin ps. Someone told me a couple of months ago that Robert Palmer died. Is this true? I had travel plans fully made out, bus fare, ticket money, missing school days worked out, everything. Then I was given a very important piece of information -- Gary's date in Pontiac, MI which was listed as an all ages show was wrongly reported as that; it was 18+. Let's just say I was NOT a happy camper. NOT at all... So, I'm praying (to the aliens) that this tour goes incredibly well and he comes back here after his next album comes out. I figure I'll be 18 by then (I'm 16 now), so I won't have to worry about stupid club rules screwing up my plans. However, I will have to worry about getting out of whatever type of job/college/thing I'm involved with, but I guess that's the price I'll have to pay at that time... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 20:29:11 -0500 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Techno Army 2 (aka The Mix) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Fellow Numanoids, I just bought my copy of "The Mix" today, and I can already tell that this one will collect some dust before I play it again. I also have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of techno music, but this latest "tribute album" reminded me alot of the "Techno Army" CD that I bought, and then sold off. Maybe it's Gary's vocals I'm getting hung up on, but it seems silly to be on your own tribute album, now doesn't it? I know Gary originally recorded the vocals used on "The Mix" for "Techno Army", and then the Cleopatra bands that remixed the tracks simply used those vocals as they saw fit, but there's just something inherently wrong with these two tribute projects in my mind. Don't get me wrong, I throughly enjoy "Random" and even "Random 2", but those are more of the tribute flavor than the "Techno Army" and "The Mix" efforts IMHO. The bands and DJs on the "Random" efforts did some interpretation and gave their own flare to Gary's songs, but the "Techno Army" and "The Mix" efforts are too close to the original track to say that these bands did little more than put a techno beat and various techno "noise" to Gary's tracks. Some tribute "The Mix" is, I'd say... Well, it's just my two cents worth, but it doesn't get very high marks for effort from me. Jeff Tolva (The Machman) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 17:31:13 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod) Subject: Teletour photos on The Mix To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello. I used my Teletour photos in the Mix artwork because that's the only time I ever saw Numan in concert, and they're the only photos I have that aren't copyrighted by someone else. Months ago I solicited people on this very list to send me photos to use on the cover of this and the upcoming "Remodulate" compilation. A handful of people replied but none of them ever did send me photos. So I am using the only ones I have. Gary gave me permission to use anything from the fan club newsletters (which are consequently on the covers of both cds) otherwise I would have nothing else except a terrible green subway photo that Eagle is using as a promotional picture. In my opinion it is one of the worst photos of Gary I have seen. Cleopatra specifically told me to use "classic numan" photos in the artwork. They feel that the general American public will respond to era photos that they recognize, and songs that they will recognize. Hence the use of 15-20 year old photos, even in the ad for the concert in L.A. To be honest they do have a point, as most people I talk to (even in the music business) have no idea about Gary other than Cars, which was almost 20 years ago. Everyone I have shown the new pictures to comments on how (comparatively) old Gary looks... Gary specifically asked me to use newer photos of himself, as he too is tired of seeing the same old images on every cd. So there is my dilemma, and I feel I made a reasonable compromise by using a large current photo and several smaller old photos. As far as comparing the artwork to NIN and Living Ornaments, I thank you. That's pretty much where I was going with it. The artwork for Remodulate is in a completely different style, however... Yes you're right, the disc for some reason printed much more pink than the booklet (same exact photo). It is a little sweet, even for my tastes... :o) They also printed the pages in the wrong order (not my fault), and I was told reprinting the booklet would delay the release for a month. Obviously they decided to put it out as it is instead of redoing it. Anyway, thanks for your input. Besides that, what's going to happen to him in the deep South? It takes someone with the sense of humor of Johnny Rotten (in 1976) to enjoy touring the deep South. Maybe there's something I'm missing out on, maybe there's a whole pile of Numan fans there? Is he ready for all that heat? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to tour the South and actually SEE, feel, taste, squeal and EXPERIENCE it. But for Eagle to think that a whole heap of tickets will be sold there? Maybe someone can fill me in on that one. Is the South a Numan-starved zone? What part of the US isn't? I think it'd be great to see Numan (flashy, dapper, dressed to kill as it is) in a full-on, totally legitimate cowboy suit. As I told JMC, he's certainly flashy enough (and at this point Goth (?) enough) to pull it off. I think that'd be deep. Just one show like that, or just one performance. He wouldn't even need to wear a ten gallon hat either. Maybe a Civil War-era hat. Those always looked pretty great. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
