To: First of all, I would like to say I am one with Elisabeth P Blum about lifes circumstances keeping us from being where we wanna be. I am jealous she got to see Iggy Pop though, and if she cares she'll send me some memories of that event. And to B. Koski who is too young... I think it really sucks, because I know how much you'd love to see Gary; it's too bad such a stupid thing as being a youth is getting in the way. If I ever become a bazillionaire, I will buy us out of any circumstances life brings and fly us all to wherever the man is. And we'll see the show dammit. Anyway, I bought a ticket for the May 11 Chicago gig. Unfortunately, I just can't go. I've got an 85 year old Grandpa in the nursing home , and a wife who's 7+ months preggers -- the timing, distance, and $$$ involved are just to much. Like Chris Schuman, I wish Minneapolis was on the tour -- I can't fathom why it's not. It seems the midwest deserves a little more attention, you know? So -- as a fellow Numanoid and all around fairly swell fellow, I am putting my ticket up for grabs. Please send me a number between 1-100 and your mailing address. I will get the winner the ticket before the show somehow, my expense. Deadline is by 5/2 so get your entry in quick! I'll post the winner with envy in my script. And have a great freakin' time. They were 4.99 each, which does strike me a bit expensive as most other singles on release are only 3.99. It is also interesting to note that the DD singles were also on the new release stand where most other singles are marked up at 1.99!! Anyway, I said I was surprised because of the talk on the Digest saying how hard it was to get hold of these. This next part is for Derek Langsford: Hi Derek, If you really want the UK version of Random 2, I can get it for you and bring it over when I come out to your neck of the woods in May. We can settle up then. If I remember correctly, you said you were in the Carlsbad area? Let me know what you want to do. Finally, can anyone on this Digest who, liked the Random 2 set please give me a fair appraisal of the current Mix CD ? I have heard mention of the Mix and Techno Army in the same sentence, but for those like me who love good quality Techno, please do not place Techno Army in the Techno category. It has no resemblance to Techno and is only worthy as a coffee mat. Craig. PS. Oh my God although I'm Australian, I've seen enough American movies for the idea to make my blood run cold. Deliverance Part II - Here's the scene: stormclouds gather. A flash of lightning. Closeup of raven sitting on a fencepost as Numan's tour bus breaks down in the middle of Nowhere. The manager, Tony Webb, (Gary's dad) in cowboy hat and mirror shades, supervises the repairs by calling for help on his mobile phone. No signal. They're stuck. A couple of roadies hitch a lift into the next town, hoping to find a mechanic. They are never seen again. Numan is bored, restless. He takes a stroll past an old farm nearby. Peeps in through the dirty cracked window; a dribbling cerebral palsied kid stares back. Gary flinches. Banjo music floats through the humid air. Numan spies a Mongoloid kid sitting on a swing playing "Cars" ... a sweating bearded cracker looms out through the bushes. "What the hail yer doin' hyar boy?" Gary's eyes glaze over. He's seen the movie too. It wasn't one of his favourites. "Er ... we're ... em ... our bus is stuck ... sir. We're on our way to ... Aintree." The hillbilly cracks an evil toothless grin, "Aintree? You ain't goin' to Aintree boy!" Another cracker appears, even uglier than the first, "Hey Bubba, he sure looks purty." They follow as Numan hotfoots it back to the bus. The hillbillies exchange glances, "Hey, I didn't know the circus wuz in town!" They fall about laughing. Tony Webb approaches, looking serious. The hillbillies cock their shotguns menacingly. "Whaddya say? You good ol' boys get us into town and there's two free tickets to the gig and as much hootch as you can guzzle." Tony saw the film too. The crackers smile at each other, "Sure thang mister. Anythang fer a free gig, heh heh." That night, the lights go down at the local saloon. A deep rumbling synth note thunders ominously as the smoke machine goes into overdrive. Numan appears in a shaft of incandescent light behind the chicken wire. A shout comes from the three hillbillies that make up the entire audience. "He shore looks purty. Just like a hog. I'll bet he squeals just like a pig!" The other cracker elbows him viciously in the face, "Shet up you ingrate, this is that ther Noomun dude from ... eh ... somewhere a long way aways, past Alabama somewheres. Show some respect. We ain't had any dem foreigners out here since dem punks back in the 70's. This is real cultural like." Suddenly the power cuts out. The place is plunged into darkness. Numan whispers to the band, "Okay. That's it. Let's get the fuck out of here!" They scramble into the bus and speed off. Tony barks into his mobile, "Get me Eagle fucking records pronto!" Fade out on banjo music as the bus roars off into the night ... TikTokMan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 18:21:21 EDT From: TUBE79 Subject: English Numanoids in NYC. Florida)that most likely will come out and support gary on this tour, While FL is indeed located at the southern tip of the continental US it is NOT the deep south, most would agree that the deep south ends around Jacksonville,FL although there is some disagreement over what to call the FL peninsula, some have suggested that it is a borough of NY considering the amount of northern transplants living there, fortunately for gary the most "south" he might see would be the occasional monster truck or armadillo roadkill judging by his tour itinerary, of course I have never been to St. Pete so I can't say for sure and he WILL have to go through Georgia first. :-) Randy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 12:07:23 -0700 From: Gregor Torrence Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #428 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) >"downstat" wrote: >1. The article appears in the "Live Music - This Week's Recommended Shows" section. The article can also be viewed online at http://www.phillyweekly.com/weekly98/ae/music.html --------------- GARY NUMAN & SWITCHBLADE SYMPHONY While that infamous 20/20 hindsight has shown us that "Cars", the song that made Gary Numan famous, was little more than a quirky novelty hit, the new nostalgia has made Numan's place as an innovator of his times much more prominent. One of the forefathers of the current electronic/techno movement, Numan has been given his props by many of today's young acts, causing a revival of interest in his music. After an extended absence from the music scene --during which he earned his pilot's license -- Numan is back with a new CD, the aptly named Exile, and his first U.S. tour in years. Combining elements of Depeche Mode, David Bowie and early Jesus & Mary Chain, Numan has made an album that stands up to all of his early work. He creates a mood that is seductively captivating, especially on such tracks as "Dead Heaven" and "Innocence Bleeding." For anyone with Numan's reputation for experimentation to re-emerge after nearly a decade is intriguing -- there's the danger that his time has passed and his legacy will be marred by mid-life self-indulgence. If Exile is any indication of what Numan's tour will offer, his reputation is indeed safe. -- Steve Baltin ----------------------- Terrence tthoman@paonline.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 00:03:36 EDT From: SisterSurx Subject: Replicant's Room To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just a short message to let everyone know, that Replicant's Room has been updated with more Numan goodies at http://members.aol.com/Replicant6 bye >From ME your Sister Surprise x ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 02:46:44 -0400 From: brezniakdavid@webtv.net (David Brezniak) Subject: Robert Palmer To: numan@cs.uwp.edu To the fellow digester who asked about Robert Palmer's death: Yes, it's true. Doing shows in both Orlando and St. Pete would be questionable, since they are so close. But, there is quite a distance between Jacksonville, Orlando, and West Palm Beach. However, when the tour dates first came out, the first thing that I noticed was that there wasn't a single date in the South. Worrying about what's going to happen to him in the South is so ridiculous. I haven't heard EXILE, yet. But, with the religious discussion, it probably would be foolish for Gary Numan to start saying his lyrics in Smalltown, Mississippi. Of course, in reality, it probably would be just as boring and pointless of a relgious debate as we had to endure on this list. I know all about how to deal with religious fanatics. (Never answer "From What?" When you are asked, "Have you been Saved?" he he he) But, he's not playing in any small, Southern towns; is he? The South is a very unique place. The isolation often keeps the world out, but also creates its own brand of freaks. The Southern Grotesque and Gothic is real; it's not just fiction made up by Faulkner and others. Being from Mississippi (but living in Florida), I wouldn't consider South Florida as an official part of The South. The closer a place is to the coast the more liberal it tends to be. South Florida also has so much Latin American influence. However, why is Gary Numan doing a show in Baton Rouge instead of New Orleans?? New Orleans is a great city; people will more likely travel from Louisiana and Mississippi and further to go to a show there. I just don't like Baton Rouge. Deborah >From: alec way >John Carramao pointed out something that is a good point: why are there >four Numan gigs in the Florida area and only two in California? I think you're confusing yourself by using the term "tribute album" to apply to all of Random, Techno Army and The Mix. Random 1 is a tribute album. The artists have done their own versions of Numan songs. Random 2, Techno Army and The Mix are remix albums. I to find it odd (but great) that Gary recorded new vocals for the projects. But the others, especially the Mix, is billed as a remix album, and indeed it is. I do like a couple of the tracks a lot (AFE - Leather Strip Mix, Cars JLAB Mix and Emotion Kill Switch mix), am warming to others, and will never like the rest; if you notice my favorites are the tracks that remain relatively faithful to the original versions, but have added a new rhythm or sound or effects. These are great songs to begin with and to see them completely disassembled (as in Random 2 ) or otherwise destroyed (Random 1) beyond the point of recognition is pointless. Rod theartdept Los Angeles > >I just bought my copy of "The Mix" today, and... this latest "tribute album" >reminded me alot of the "Techno Army" CD that I bought, and then sold off. >Maybe it's Gary's vocals I'm getting hung up on, but it seems silly to be on >your own tribute album, now doesn't it? That is, besides the obvious addition of DITP live. Are some tracks longer or shorter? Before I fork over thirty dollars I want to know. Three days and counting until the US tour begins! Ian Golder iandg@wenet.net ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 00:30:39 -0700 From: theartdept@att.net (rod) Subject: Vox article May 1998 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello again. There is an article about Gary in the new Vox magazine (May 1998) from the UK (Kula Shaker on the front). It is disguised as an article about obsessive fans and I wasn't even going to read it until as I turned the page I noticed a small picture of Gary at the bottom. It is an article about obsessive fans, but starts out at the Numan birthday party/ convention, then goes on to talk about stalkers of such stars as Madonna, Kim Wilde, Adam And and Elton John, then goes back to the Numan fans. There is a rather unflattering (although not necessarily untrue) paragraph by a psychiatrist who says that Numan fans "must have gotten into Gary Numan in late adolescence, a notoriously idealistic point of life, and have stuck at that point. It's about controlling a small section of their lives completely. There's an element of ritual. Even the convention itself has the same format every year." Hmmmm.
